I blew away all my partitions too and express gate works fine. I loaded the express gate application while loading the drivers from the driver disk after the flatten and rebuild. Try the driver disk and check off the Express Gate application / driver. Also, when you turn the G73 off use the middle button of the top left 3 blue led buttons to start the computer into express gate mode :)

Fired up Steam today - no love! Froze!

    Rebooted - same.

Uninstalled Creative stuff and Steam worked.

WTH? If Creative really does it, then someone at steam was a bad bad programmer...it's just a freakin app loader for *(&*^'s sake!

I had been until now....BUT, for the first time I did try adjusting Creative settings while playing music...bass boost, eq, etc. (none of which effected speaker output BTW) :)

Maybe I'll try reinstalling creative stuff...I don't know. If it doesn't effect sound on speakers then I really don't need it...

*edit* The Creative volume knob worked lol

#edit 2* Reinstalled Creative stuff - Steam freezes again. Bummer.

    Steam Freeze Issue

First, my apologies if someone already figured this out and I missed the post.

And if anyone is bored and/or has the Steam freezing issue, and wants to verify this, please do!

I've narrowed it down to either of two check boxes that make or break Steam.

Right click the Windows sound notification icon in the system tray
    Select "Playback devices"
Click on "Speakers" in the playback devices listbox
    Click the "Properties" button
    Do one of the following:
    Go to the "Enhancements" tab
The "Disable all sound effects" checkbox is the one. If it's checked, Steam works. If it's unchecked, Steam freezes.
    or
Go to the "Sound Blaster" tab
The "Disable Enhancements" checkbox is the one. If it's checked, Steam works. If it's unchecked, Steam freezes.

At least now I can leave Creative installed and still use Steam. And I did get the Creative effects working on the speakers (those checkboxes needed to be unchecked).

That makes sense. I don't like those sound effects. I always turn those off. I like the equalizer but not sound effects. That may be why some people have Steam freezing while others like me do not.

Hi there, I'm planning to buy Asus G73Jh but I am currently living in Singapore. Do XoticPC accept order from outside US? Greatly appreciate the answer guys :)

Played Far Cry tonight on HD TV & sound system.

Plugged in HDMI cable (first time), clicked Fn-F8 to cycle to the HDMI output and played away. Sound playback device switched automatically...Simple!

    Very nice! :D

This happened again this morning (sunday) called ASUS back and they said i needed to change my windows update settings from auto(Reccomended) to let me chosse what to download and install. said that having it on auto it is downloading updates that are for xp and vista and that is what is causing my issue and why i have to press the reset button on the bottom of the laptop to get it to turn on.

This sound like it makes sense to any of you? or have you had this issue?

My A1 has been working great been gaming alot maxed out C&C 3, UT3 and steam works fine.

Just this issue with the next day i go to turn it on and it just flashes the blue lights at me and no screen comes on untill after i press the reset button on bottom.

Anyone have the drivers for the button mouse mine did not come with them.

If your computer is acting up before the GPU posts any kind of video to the LCD (ASUS BIOS Logo, Windows 7 splash screen, et cetera.), then it's nothing to do with a virus. It's hardware- or BIOS-related.

This is definitely a canned response that the ASUS techs read from their screen. Windows Update have little-to-nothing to do with the boot issues you're having. The only thing that can fix your problem is hardware replacement (if there's even anything wrong) or a BIOS update, neither of which are fixed by Windows Updates.

The ASUS update utility on the other hand, maybe. I'm not sure if it pushes out BIOS updates or not.

I would check the G73JH's driver download page and see if you have the latest BIOS. That's really the only thing you can do short of sending it to them so they can look at it.

ok thank u i wasn't sure what the deal was.

i do have another question though. this guy seems to be suffering from the same thing i am atm http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1455558&page=5

basically hes comparing the 5870 to a gtx280, and getting worse performance out of his new 5870. now granted he is talking about a desktop 5870 and not a mobile one, i know the mobiles are usually a bit slower. however my desktop rig has a q9450 with a gtx280 and i do get lower fps on this notebook than i do on my desktop. i was certain this notebook would have been able to outperform it, it has twice the amount of ram, "8" cores vs the regular 4 in my quad, and a brand new top of the line graphics card vs one that came out about a year ago and for some reason it performs worse.

the only thing i can figure is the clock speed. the q9450 i have runs at about 2.8ghz, where the 720qm can only get 2.8ghz if a single core app needs it. so multithreaded games dont take advantage of the turbo boost. but thats all i can figure. i fired up ut3 this morning and found that I get about half the frames i have vs my desktop in certain areas, but i also noticed the turbo boost gadget kicking into gear once i opened it. i thought ut3 was multithreaded but i guess not. maybe thats why.

Hi Guys, this is my first post here in Notebookreview. I decided to hold off posting until my G73JH-A1 arrived last March 13 here in the Philippines. I guess I'm one of the first owners of this laptop here if not really the first to have it.

I pre-ordered mine from BTOTech.com on January 29 and BTOTech shipped it on March 9. I am currently enjoying the laptop, all on stock settings. I guess I have to test it for a couple more days without modifying any of its drivers or settings. I've already played Need for Speed Undercover, Need for Speed Shift, Crysis, Crysis Warhead, and Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 and most of them ran at highest settings except for Crysis Warhead which was ran at Gamer settings. I haven't encountered any of the reported problems here in Notebookreview such as grey screen issues, bad RAM slots, etc., probably because Eddie of BTOTech took the extra time to stress test my laptop before shipping it.

Anyway, I just have a few questions though. Is there a definitive guide here in NBR to reformat, upgrade or tweak the G73JH? I might have missed it if there's any since this thread is already huge. If I install a retail or OEM version of Windows 7 Home Premium and wipe out the recovery partition, can I activate it using the Windows Keys at the bottom of the laptop? I remember somebody at the other thread posted the preview Catalyst 10.3 drivers. Are there any updates yet about the Video Drivers?

    There it is, 5870 > 5870m, GTX280 > GTX280m, and the i7 720QM only has 4 cores, but with HyperThreading it has 8 threads (not 8 cores)

    Desktop components > Mobile components

There are laptops that use desktop components though.

You cannot compare desktop gpu's with mobile versions, they are not the same. A desktop gtx 280 is still considerably faster than a mobile gtx280 and a 5870 mobile. Both of these mobile cards are closer to the 9800gtx desktop card. The difference between the q9450 and the i7 720 in gaming is arguable if there is any difference. The i7 is better at multithreading if it is supported.

I think the Q9450 runs 2.8 ghz on all 4 cores. You know how the i7 advertisements say 1.6-2.8ghz with turbo boost? Under low CPU loads, the processor will run 1 core at 2.8 ghz, medium load 2.4ish on 2 cores and full load 1.6ghz on 4 cores. The desktop Q9450 outperforms it, and I'm fairly sure that a desktop 280 is close if not identical to the 5870m overall in performance. There is generally a big difference between desktop and laptop hardware, even if the they carry the same name.

Could anyone help me find the guide that tells you what to download and test out once you get your lappy?
Ived been searching the forums for about 5 hours now trying to find that post that had a great guide for
"what to do when you get your computer"
It had the info on doing a fresh system reinstall to avoid the bloatware and a ton of info on what programs to download to test it..
Wish i could have bookmarked the page....

Hi, I will be hoping to get the G73jh soon, and I have read somewhere on this forum that it is possible to install a blue ray burner yourself into the laptop.

Can anyone confirm that this is possible? If yes, could you let me know which blue ray burner model was successfully self installed?

    Thanks! :D

Same model as Quagmire's in mine, works a treat. You need to remove the RAM cover (2 screws) and then look for the one optical drive retaining screw - and that's it. The drive's tray cover pulls off with a slight tug, swap the ASUS cover for the one on your new drive, slide the new drive in, voila. You'll probably want to update the BD driver after the install, can do that via Device Manager. If you dawdle it's five minutes, move crisply and you can do it in three.

Thanks Quagmire and Tallen for the quick reply!

The instructions by Tallen seem straight forward enough.... :) I guess there seems to be no requirement for any hardware modifications with a hacksaw..hee. I assume if you replace the sony burner face plate with the originall Asus one, it will look completely flush with the laptop body. Maybe someone could do a picture install tutorial one day on this forum board...if no one does, than I might do it when I get my G73....

It's slide out - slide in, really nothing to it. The hardest part for me was finding the drive retaining screw, but it's pretty obvious, I just don't have good eyes. The only modification as I say above is the tray cover; the ASUS is oddly shaped because of the design of the machine so you'll want to pull the stock one off your new drive - a firm tug will do it - and pop the ASUS one on in it's place.

It's a little more than a firm tug- there are two tabs holding the bezel in place. However, it's easy- just be careful and it'll come right off.

Oh, and don't forget that he has to remove the drive retaining bracket from the old drive, and screw it in the new drive so the drive doesn't slide out. So:

    1. Remove bottom panel from laptop (2 screws)
    2. remove drive retaining screw (1 screw)
    3. Remove drive retaining bracket from old drive (2 screws)
    4. Install drive retaining bracket onto burner (2 screws)
    5. GENTLY "pop" the 3 tabs on the G73 drive front fascia
    6. CAREFULLY "pop" the 3 tabs on the Burner front fascia
    7. LOVINGLY "snap" the G73 front fascia onto the Burner
    8. Slide the new burner into bay
    9. Secure new burner with the drive retaining screw. (1 screw)
    10. Replace botom panel from laptop (2 screws)

I'm having an issue with the DVD tray opening far too often. The button that open/closes the tray is in a place that gets bumped causing this. Is there any software or any way available to disable the button on the DVD tray so that it can't be opened? I'm doubting there is but asking anyway.

You have to do each folder individually. I took a screenshot and edited it to show you how. Set up a destination folder for each on your data drive.. like "DOCs_Username", "PICs_Username" etc. Then point each user folder to the folder you made one at a time as show below with the "Move" button.

The folders will be referenced as the same but the files will all be on your data drive. Its also a good idea since the files usually safer on a separate drive in case the windows OS fails on the main drive, or the main drive fails. The data drive would still be safe. So its a good idea to do all those user folders not just the ones that take the most space. ;)

I suggest you use your G73JH on original settings for the first week or so. Do not run Windows Update yet as some have reported that updating their Windows resulted in crashes. Now, if your machine is "untouched", meaning you did not add any software or updated your OS, then the problem might be hardware-related and you can request for an RMA. My G73JH-A1 is working flawlessly on stock settings.

Guys I am having a issue with my G73 I had a intel 6200 card installed and it only shows 54mb instead of the 270-300 it should. I have uninstalled and reinstalled it like 3 times is there a setting in windows I am missing?

If your router is only putting out 802.11g then your bandwidth is maxed at 54mb/s. Your router needs to support the 300mb/s bandwidth.

Download and install if you haven't already. After you select your os it is the the 13.1.1.0 version.

    Intel® PROSet/Wireless WiFi Connection Utility for Windows 7 64-Bit*

Open network and sharing center -> click wireless network connection -> open wireless properties and check the enable intel connection settings. click ok and it should reset it.

Now what is it connected at?
