Sorry, but I have a couple noob questions. How do you force quit? Is there a hot key or other some other way to open the blueray drive bay other than pressing on it? How do you adjust the bass? I don't think my woofer is working. Thanks.

In order to do a force quit you need to get into the task manager. There are two quick ways to do so:
    1 - Right-click on the bottom-bar (taskbar) and click open task-manager
2 - Alt+CTRL+DEL and when the weird screen pops up simply click on task-manager.

Next go to the "Processes" tab and then find the process that you wish to kill. Finally right-click and select end-task.

There shouldn't be any hot-keys for opening the drive other than the button itself. Only other way I could think of would be right-clicking the drive in Computer, then click "Eject".

From what I've heard, the subwoofer is controlled via the Creative software which came installed on your notebook.

    Q,

That site never worked for me either. The entire 3 weeks it sat at ASUS HQ. Even today, I get no hits when I put in the RMA# or my serial#.

Have you decided if you're going to even open the 3rd lappy up yet?

At least I'm not alone, my bud JS is in the doghouse with me :) woof!

idk, I'm still figuring it's going to be long and drawn out (they only got it tuesday morning), I'm just mr. negativity now. Maybe Asus will pull me out of it like they did with the 1st replacement, but I have to wait and see what they are going to say the problem is and their proposed solution

even if they called me tonight and shipped out a replacement, by the time I got it, I will be officially without a laptop as long as I had use of two of them (and I seriously doubt I'll get that call tonight)

your replacment still running smooth I hope

I've got another question. Tonight I was using my lappy on the Power4Gear Power Saver Mode running on battery, I went in the other room to grab my power cable and in the mean time the screen went into suspend(just the screen not the whole system) I came back and plugged the power cable in and when I went to hit the mouse to bring it back up I got a mainly white scrambled screen  . I hit Alt+CNTRL+Del and brought task manager up and it went back to normal. Everytime it goes into suspend without the power cable then gets plugged back in while in suspend it gives me the same scrambled screen. Anyone have any idea what would cause this? I'm just wondering if it's a problem or not, I can still exchange it(BB model, they still have a couple at the store :p ) and if it's a problem I want to.

I will be checking out some games or benchmarking tools for a bit to make sure nothing wonky happens. Next I will be putting it to sleep then waking it up, probably a few times. Hmm.. next I will check HWinfo or whatever the program is (i have it somewheres) to see which ram I have. I suppose during the whole gaming/benchmarking session I will also be monitoring the GPU temps.

If all goes well I will be wiping the computer to put on Windows 7 Pro, and I will be giving the home premium key to my girlfriend in a week or so once things are more solid. This way she can update from Vista home premium to 7 without a format.

Oh I forgot, another step is installing the 6200 wireless card I bought so that I can transfer stuff over the router at whack speeds. For some reason the 5300 I put on my old laptop couldn't get any higher than 12 MBps, although the wired connection (Gbps) gets over 30, so hopefully this won't be the case anymore.

Works for me. Don't put the "N"...it specifically asks for the 10-char part :)

*edit* looks like the destination of the link has changed this morning...still working though.

My status this morning is "Waiting-Wait for material" after statuses of "Repairing" and "Waiting-Wait for parts" yesterday...

I reckon the website randomly selects from a list of statuses :)

A phone call from Asus would make me feel warm and fuzzy...

I called last night to see why I couldn't use the RMA site (making sure I'm using the right numbers and such) and see if my RMA had a status with them. I got the standard "we apologize" added with "we have been having server problems with RMA site" which does not explain why I could never use it with either RMA. All standard stuff when there isn't a real answer.

My next call will be Friday evening if I'm not called by then. I did request to be called by the tech when they have diagnosed it (on the note one gives the tech dept.). They called me the first time, I'm hoping they are as good with comm this time.

It's what we're talking about ziddy. RMA site works for Mandrake and MarkS, but not JS and myself. Thanks though.

Indeed, their instructions do conflict as their example is " XXXX950001 " (laugh all you want, it's on their site), so I did try USAxxxxxxx and still no go. I checked I was using all the right stuff with the phone tech.
No worries with the RMA site, I'm starting to like talking to people just to hear the song and dance.

EDIT: That is too funny, NBR filter took out the 4 letters of the RMA number example, you'll have to go to the site to see what is says.

Has anyone uninstalled Power4Gear on this bad boy and tried using the TwinTurbo mode on it? I'm wondering if Power4Gear and the TwinTurbo mode are directly linked/tied-in to the same app? I've been having problems with some of the modes causing scrambled screens in Power4Gear but TwinTurbo has worked perfect and gives a nice small boost in performance. I tried contacting Asus on this but got the typical rep that knew nothing, they didn't even know what TwinTurbo or Power4Gear were. Any help would be really appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Hey man, I'm running into the same problem. I've been putting it back to sleep as well. I like the ctrl alt del method as well. Will play around with that method as well.

Does anyone have an idea why the computers are doing this. I'd really like for it to power on and leave it at that?

According to HWiNFO32, one of my cores is getting a little hotter than the others....is this normal?

    ie...

    Core 0 - 61
    Core 1 - 60
    Core 2 - 67
    Core 3 - 59

These are MAX values during a 6 hour work session (photoshop, web, etc...).

Avg tems for the cores are 40s...

RMA city it is, sent the package off today to Indianapolis. :(

For others that have RMA'd the unit, what all did you put in the return shipment package? I just put the notebook, battery, and power adapter.

Thanks Quagmire, that really sucks  , the TT has worked awesome but it seems any time I use the P4G in anything other than high performance mode the screen wigs out on me if it goes into screen suspend. This is the 4th G series I have had in about 3 weeks that has issues. Thank god it's not the BSOD/throttle/freeze crap like the G51JX!

Sounds like a power setting with at least the CPU set for energy saving.

There's lots of advanced power settings in Power4Gear....it's worth the time to go through and tune them if you're going to use it.

Does using P4G and TT really boost noticeable performance? Or is the gains something along the lines of going from maybe 35fps to 38fps?

Edit: Of course, varying from game to game, but I meant on a general level.

I haven't really noticed a huge gain in performance in most games, but when doing things non game related like moving/editing/creating big files the cpu definitely kicks it up a notch. None of them in P4G or TT have made a huge(let's say 50%) gain in anything but even small real world gains are better than none!

So what's the final verdict with getting the official 10.3 drivers? I saw about 15 pages back there was a link to the site to get them, but it appears to download the 1.09 MB file which is the desktop drivers I believe. So where do I get the mobility one?

I predicted that the Seagate hard drive would be a huge problem and it occurred after having the web browser near finished on a 2hr 20 min video, that after automatic restart the bios didn't recognize the hard drive. Subsequently it was producing monkey squeaking sounds and I decided to swap out the unused 2nd hd with the first in order to try and recuperate the data to help restore where I had everything at.

Seagate is total @$%& with this series of HD and I would never trust them with anything. And Asus should have known better than to try and skim for change with something so shoddy as this '"Momentous" BS' model because they are creating a huge liability for their fan base.

Hopefully Windows 7 won't be my next blame victim because they would really me off if they do that whole routine of deactivating the access key. . .

Update: Upon resuming the new installation of Windows. . . No it did not recognize the original primary drive whatsoever. The firmware that Seagate released was supposed to have done something to enable for preventive measures, though clearly the series .4 is no different it would appear from earlier versions, and I wouldn't bother with what all they might attempt to remediate with free file recovery they are purported to offer.

    I'm seeing gates. . . and I don't like it.

Whenever I'm connected to the Internet, my G73JH-A1 freezes and I just have to forcibly power it off. This happens randomly and in different time intervals. Sometimes I get to browse the Internet for 30 minutes before the freezing occurs and sometimes it's just less than 10 minutes. This happens when I'm connected via my wireless access point and even if I'm directly connected to the Internet using a USB wireless broadband modem.

Anyone experiencing the sames issues? Looking at the Event Viewer does not help because it does not provide a log of the faulting application or hardware component. What's more puzzling is this thing never happens when I'm not connected to the Internet. I'm using all stock settings by the way and only installed a couple of games.

I don't understand why people think that TT is helping. The benchmarks clearly show a loss in performance. The only way I can see it helping out of a game is that it locks 4 cores, so it may prevent switching from 2 cores to 4 (Although this shouldn't cause any loss in performance).

This is purely a software issue, just remove Power4Gear and everything will be like a box of chocolates :).

My friend and I both bought one of these drives when they came out and I thought it was amazing. I went from a 4200rpm 3platter 200gb drive to a much faster (2-3x), and more power efficient (didn't make much sense) drive. Neither of us experienced any problems.

I also must suggest that I have only seen two posts thus far of a failing hard drive. Good luck with your problems though.

That's the right file. Download it, and run it. It will download the 10.3 mobility driver on its own.

You should have followed their instructions on returning everything to a tee. I hope it doesn't cause you delays getting your replacement because a replacement is what it will be. Good luck.

No prob, imo and several others, P4G & TT have next to no value and cause more issues than it's worth. Now a BIOS update that allowed manual OC of the BLCK, multipliers and mem, that would be valuable.

It doesn't even help at a full core load lock, check out my Cinebench 10 & 11.5 P1 P2 videos.

As some may be aware, I currently don't have a G73 and haven't been able to continue my testing of OpenGL graphic apps that actually show some Asus TT performance in Cinebench 11.5 OpenGL test, so if anyone wants to go after the the Unigine benchmarks running OpenGL, it's what I had intentions to do, but really I don't give that much of a crap because I don't run native OpenGL apps.

This is interesting and honestly, I'm not surprised. Anyone else that used your G73 key with a W7 iso and didn't have this problem should chime in.

The reason I am not surprised is MS didn't sell Asus a full version W7 Home Premium and one of the key apps to prove this is windows "Backup and Restore". You don't get this app with the Asus OS (I learned this very early from Ken) and it is likely because Asus made a deal for an OEM type W7 HP and MS caught you using the wrong key for this deal. All imo along with a RMA won't help as you're not using the product correctly and Asus is apt to tell you that.

Interesting - thanks for the link! Bummer there's no known solution yet though.

I was curious if it was just coincidence, as my keyboard lights stopped working after the BIOS update.

Mine is RMAd and currently at ASUS to fix this very issue.

Has anyone tried out the built in microphone yet? If so, should I be getting a headset for it as well or is the mic good enough?.

Funny how the audigy software is causing SOOO many problems.

Is the subwoofer still usable if you get rid of it?

Is this windows backup and restore in the Maintenance folder?
Do you have the standard Asus OS installation that came on the machine or did you install from a W7 iso or personal W7 copy?

If it's not in the Maintenance folder of start menu or you don't have a maintenance folder, then it may not be the same program. I'm at work and don't have my W7.

I'm so confused with my retail W7 and my lack of ever seeing either of my freaking G73s.

Can you open up the program and take a screenshot of the interface ready to do a full image backup? Thanks, I'm looking for reasons that would cause MS to deactivate a W7.
