Anyone know if I upgraded the CPU myself, will ASUS void the warranty? Or how they can tell?
-
hi, just got my g73 in the mail and i have 3 questions about it.
1. what anti virus should i get for it?
2. what anti spyware should i get?
3. should i update my ati 5870 drivers? its currently 8.683.0.0.
thanks! -
I tried that but it just kept popping out the disk and giving me the error.
I did some looking around and noticed of the 6 ISO Files my computer created for the disks, the Disk 5 file had nothing to it... All the other ones were huge files, obviously as they're are ISO images, however Disk 5 was 0kb.... weird. -

thanks Yuxi. also, i was wondering if there are any wc3 players out there? I'm new to these 17 inch screens (before i had 15) and i was wondering how you make wc3 fill the whole 17 inch screen up? or does the res not go that high?

I've been running a clean install for a few weeks now, but one thing is bugging me: does anyone know what the "PCI Simple Communications Controller" in device manager is?

Screen size has nothing to do with anything.
If your native screen resolution in pixels is 1920x1080, I would set game settings at that.
If that resolution is not an available option in the game, I would choose the next lower resolution that has the same aspect ratio (width divided by height) as the screen's native pixel resolution. -

Good luck to you Mandrake! Let's hope they don't go doing a full inspection on everything irrelevant before addressing the issue (whatever it may be).

Has anyone with the i7-720QM and the Intel Turbo Boost Monitor installed seen it go up to 2.80Ghz? Supposedly when only one core is active, the CPU is capable of boosting that core up to 2.8Ghz, but mine stays at 2.53-2.66GHz. I've never seen it reach 2.8, even with 1 core at 100% usage and the other 7 (hyperthreaded) at 0-1%.
Edit: with 2 cores active I get 2.26GHz instead of the advertised 2.4. -

It's just not worth. You can find plenty of posts where Asus has denied warranty because it's evident you had changed it yourself.
Why risk it, if you are going to spend that much to buy the 920, pay to have to installed by an authorized dealer.
Also trust me, taking it apart is not fun. It's not just the screws, there are so many wires and the plugs are fragile. -
So tell me people, since Asus doesn't like you upgrading your cpu and everything what happens if you buy it from best buy or buy it from somewhere else, and you get the CPU upgraded from best buy will asus whine and complain about these things? Why should asus whine and complain if you want to upgrade the cpu anyway, its an enthusiasts machine and what the heck is their problem? Also can you put in Intel 6300 and not void your warranty or is Asus also going to whine and complain about it!
-
I would like to refer users to this thread:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=472182
Are other owners experiencing the same issues when using the G73 on battery power? Mine "always" throttles at some point below 50%. -
How does this have to do with my question, its more about battery life than anything else??
-
I don't think Asus cares who puts the CPU in as long as the person or dealer are authorized to do so.
The only thing to worry about voiding your warranty is really the CPU. Putting in a new WiFi card won't require you to disassemble the laptop. -
Well i hope i will be able to put in the intel 6300 wifi card in there and not void the warranty!! Why must they be whinny about this? Dell is not like that, most people buy a machine like this because they are enthusiasts!!! Also why the heck can't they use motherboards that allow you to change the GPU to another one when a new gpu comes out. Besides some complaints, i am going to try to see if i call up b and h or j and r and get a A2 reserved tomorrow so i can pick it up very excited for this machine! Hopefully i pray it will be in my hands tomorrow.
-
You really have to ask why Asus would care?
Why should Asus provide you warranty on something YOU broke.
- You can by all means go ahead and change the CPU just don't expect Asus to provide warranty on it. There is no way to tell whether the problem occured because YOU broke it when doing it or if it was Asus's fault.
- Asus probably has this policy because they found out how much money in the past they spent because people did mess up their systems thinking they are gods of laptops and knew what they were doing, when in fact were incompetent.
- To be frank, a company that doesn't do this, is a stupid company. No reason at all to spend their own money to fix your stuff when you break it and to ensure that it was not you, they have to ensure you did not do anything that could have shorted it or any number of problems.
Most people buy the G73 because it fits their needs, not because they are enthusiast looking to void their warranty. Those are the very small group of people, miniscule.
- And really, how much of a pain is it to just order the laptop with the CPU you want than to whine about not being able to do it yourself and voiding the warranty?
- By doing the above you are ensuring the system arrives in perfect working condition anyhow. -
Now i agree with you about that, dell doesn't care if you do it, they send a technician over to do it for you!! Why can't asus do the samething, that is what i should of said before.

@freedom16
Swappable GPUs are a great idea. But the whole mxm (I think that's what it's called) never quite took off because if you've taken apart a couple of laptops, you'll find that they're all designed differently especially when it comes to the vents. I myself would love to not buy a new laptop just for a new gpu, but considering the space alloted and designs, we don't have much of a choice.
@ziddy123
Good points on the whole breaking your own laptop thing. -
I am having a problem playing half life 2. I recently purchased orange box and i played through portal, no problems. I wanted to try out the halflife 2 single player and after about one minute i started having this problem. everytime i try to use the arrow keys to move, it makes a beeping noise and keeps repeating it and my character does not move. I can look around just fine(when i'm not trying to move), and the frame rate is good too, its just when i try to move, it freezes until i stop pushing the key. Also, i have the same video drivers that the g73 came with (8.4 i think) because i heard of problems that happen if you update to the latest version. Any advice?
thanks -
whats the easiest way of checking what type of ram i have?
-
Do you know a program or gadget that could monitor the temperature for the g73, and having it on the "SIDEBAR GADGET", because i have used everest it doesnt read the GPU's temperature.

Anyways, the keyboard is really starting to bug me now. The more I use it, the looser the keys get. (WASD in particular)
Is this happening with anyone else, and do I have a faulty keyboard? It seems to be wearing out quickly. -
Has anyone tried / can anyone confirm if its possible to boot (Windows 7) from an SD Card on the G73JH?
Thanks. -
ok, i found out that there was chinese running on my keyboard. Il have to play more HL 2 to find out if the problem still is there. It happens after about 10-20 minutes of gameplay. yes, i use WASD.

Been pretty much the go to solution with most gaming related issues. -
Can we overclock this notebook?
Does anyone know where or how to get a service manual, something to show how to disassemble and upgrade the CPU? -
What type of Ram does Asus use by the way? The kingston hyperx ram is expensive but such a performance jump. You can overclock the notebook using the turbo through Asus, unless you have the 920X its not going to happen through the Bios, you have too get programs to overclock, but from experiences from reading there, its a great notebook to overclock but the problem is that a lot of people didn't get the best results which included fried components, just have to be careful.
-
Also here is the manual you have been looking for.. http://forum.notebookreview.com/showpost.php?p=6103055&postcount=24
-
- Spend the money on getting an SSD. This is the single upgrade you will notice most difference than overclocking, new ram or whatever other ideas you may come up with.
- And I mean that, STUPID.
- You void the warranty when you do it.
- You have G73 COMPLETELY apart. There are 20 different wires, all the plugs are fragile so they will break with very little force.
- You have to take the motherboard completely, out, take the screen off. All the screws on the bottom and outside, you literally take every single screw out to do this.
Considering how expensive to upgrade from the 720 to the 920, it's not worth it to do it yourself, it costs just a little more to have XoticPC or GenTech do it for you. They will test it and make sure it's in perfect working condition and you retain your warranty. The difference between 720 and 820 is not worth it, negligible. Don't do it. For most use, difference between 720 and 920 is also negligible. You won't notice unless you are doing really really really intensive CPU work. Current games don't even take full advantage of even just 2 cores of the 4 cores on the i7. It was proven when disabling 2 cores on the i7, even BC2 can't make full use of the 2 remaining cores.
Anyways that is my take on this question. -
Just wanted to post that my HD bracket has shipped from Asusparts. I have not received it as yet to confirm, but if you're interested the part is here:
http://www.asusparts.eu/index.php?cPath=67674_73347_158847_158848_158863
It took them about 3 weeks (as stated) to get it in and ship it. I'll write back and confirm if it is the correct part but those folks looking to get the HD assembly should have a glimmer of hope. -

I've previously only used what can be considered relatively "weak" laptops with small power supplies that never really heated up much. Now that I have the G73, with an enormous power supply I noticed that it heats up fairly quickly, stays warm, and gets progressively hotter. I typically keep the power supply on a carpeted floor and was wondering if the hotness is normal and typical of the G73 power supply. Any comments would be appreciated. Thanks.

I've always had the power bricks run really hot, so hot can't put my foot on them. In 10 years never had to replace one of these bricks. -
Quagmire LXIX Have Laptop, Will Travel!
Good news (I hope), my A1 rma that I got as a replacement to my X1 hardware failure is on the way back to me. I have a tracking number and due to arrive on the 8th (fingers crossed it arrives a day early like my 1st rma).
When I asked what the problem was (it appears the tech won't call you upon request, they only call when their protocol forces them to), the phone tech said " it looks like you had a boot problem and the solution was to reinstall the OS", to which if any of you have knowledge of my ordeal, this answer shot my blood pressure through the roof.
I told her I had 35 minutes of video and a full page typed explanation of the problem and I don't know how one can think that was the problem. She put me on hold to further check and came back with " the video card was replaced", which was real good because the vein on my forehead was throbbing. So I hammered this out for clarity, that I still have the same A1 serial numbered unit, the VGA was replaced and they reinstalled the OS because that was procedure, and she verified " yes"
So, high blood pressure aside, all went as I figured with it being a hardware failure and coincides with the 2 rma status I heard during the 5 working days they had it. The first was "swap component" and the second was "in repair", my third call yielded me a tracking # and a near heart attack.
I have to give Asus credit (along with myself for a thorough test and explanation) that for arriving on a Tuesday morning, they were able to swap out the VGA (hopefully doing a thorough test on it themselves) and send it back the following Monday.
Rest assured, I will be doing an unbox video then run Heaven and a game until my eyes bleed all without a video pause.
I will post one of the videos of the crash below for anyone that experiences it (skip to the 7:40 mark for the crash) and you will find more info by going to my channel and reading the video description and comments. This crash is a 5xxx series thing and the conclusion is hardware failure. Poor production would be my guess.

I hope I can now enjoy my G73 like so many others have been able to and also help others that find this problem on theirs.

Good luck Quagmire! Lets hope 3rd time is the charm. I'm loving my G73 but I'm hoping I don't run into your bad luck
I doubt I'd have your patience...

Awesome news Quagmire - congrats!
I wish I'd hear something about mine. I really need to buy a new notebook here if I'm not going to get my G73 back in the near future. This is no longer amusing...I bought this for work...Last edited by a moderator: May 8, 2015 -
