Is there a way for numlock to be automatically turned on when you boot up the laptop? It's a tad annoying to turn it on every time I start up, considering I use it for my password.

Thanks much fellas. I have had some very pessimistic moments and I'm not out of the woods yet :) , but it does feel good to be right and Asus coming through by putting some speed on the solution. One can't put the card failure on them, but like I said, I hope they t-h-o-r-o-u-g-h-l-y tested it before shipping it off.

Dare I say my patience has been 'saintly' :) and I've still been supportive of Asus through all this; I hope it pays off and I can get back to normal.

Mark, I'm still pulling for you man, may I recommend you put down the mouse and call for updates so they can see how important it is to you. Asus service has come through for me twice /no jinx for saying that :D /no jinx for saying that, so I see no reason why they won't take care of you.

To be even cheerier (is that a word), I see there was no lengthy hold up coming back between Union City and Oakland. It departed Memphis at 15:55 today and I believe that is a sign it will indeed arrive at FedEx tomorrow early just like last time so I can go pick it up a day earlier than estimated.

All goes well, I will show Asus some more public love for their efforts.

Well, my A1 shipped yesterday so I'll be moving in here. I was a cheapo and ordered the slow/free shipping so it should be here monday, hopefully saturday though (sometimes UPS is ahead of schedule).

    @Lumina: I don't think there is.

EDIT: I did a quick search, and this is what turned up:

"A. The registry entry HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Keyboard\InitialKeyboardIndicators can be used to set the initial state of the Num Lock key for the current user. To modify the state of NumLock for the logon screen.

    Start the registry editor (regedit.exe)
Move to HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Control Panel\Keyboard (we are editing .default which is the profile used prior to logon)
    Double click on InitialKeyboardIndicators
Set to 2 and click OK
    Close the registry editor"

I don't know if it works, so if you aren't comfortable messing with the registry, don't try.

EDIT 2: It also looks like it can be turned on in the Bios on some computers. IDK about the G73 bios though--Mine has yet to get here :(

The NumLock will be retained, but not until after Login unfortunately.

Wish there was a way to get the KEYBOARD LIGHTS to go on before LOGIN too!

You can uninstall the SRS Premium Control Panel (dunno why it got bundled in the first place). I haven't seen the blank error on the left though.

Is there anything special I need to do to get my laptop to recognize the 802.11n SSID that my dual-band router is broadcasting? It's not picking it up.

OK...so I tried to play a Blu-ray disk, the PowerDVD OEM software kept telling me I needed to update it, but never gave me the option to do so. I downloaded a patch from the Cyberlink website, and then PowerDVD just crashed on startup. So I uninstalled it thinking I'd just reinstall it, but apparently the included DVD doesn't have the PowerDVD software on it.

    Now what?

So, running CPU-Z, it shows that I have an i7-720 processor. PC Wizard, however shows an i7-820. I thought that was interesting...is this because of the Turbo Boost built in?

Could you be a bit more specific, do you want to replace a 1600x900 display (BB model), or do you just need a 1080p monitor?

A monitor can be purchased pretty much anywhere, the display may be a bit more difficult.

I would give a call to a Clevo/Asus reseller, as the newer Clevo's have the same 1080p screen as the G73jh-[ax][12].

I'm still waiting for my first RMA to come back from the middle of March. As much contact I've been getting from Asus and the promise that my case has been marked "Urgent", I'm just a sad panda right now with nothing to show for the money I spent. It sucks camping out on campus until 11PM to use a computer, but I guess that's what you gotta do to get the bills paid and get that degree.

Ouch! Now I feel bad for complaining :)

Mine was shipped yesterday evening so I should have her back tomorrow.

I wasn't able to pry any status info from Asus via phone beyond "waiting for parts", but coincidentally after a friendly request for the status via an email to the tech that asked for permission to wipe the OS, all of a sudden it was on a truck.

    Hang in there!

Ok here's a tally of my G73 defective experiences hehe

    1) Newegg 1080p model - bad GPU
    2) Best Buy 1600x900 model - bad LCD
    3) Best Buy 1600x900 model - only sees 2GB of 6GB.

So I've had 3 defective G73JH notebooks. 3 of 5. That's rather unnerving and says something about ASUS concern for quality.

I returned my perfect BB model for the lower model that's $400 cheaper but functionally almost identical. That's when I ran into the missing RAM one. I didn't leave the store until I was fairly sure everything was fine. The had a few in stock.

The BB guy tried reseating the RAM. Strangely the BIOS saw 6GB but Windows only saw 2GB.

I'm on my second model (first one had dust until the screen, not a dead pixel) and I had that problem (#4). Did you check in BIOS to see if all 6GB was there? In Windows, it would not appear at all. It said I only have 2GB, and O couldn't seem to fix it on the laptop itself though it did say that 3 of the 4 memory slots had 2GB sticks. So what I did was open up the bottom and reseat the two accessible memory sticks (I think there's one under the motherboard which I couldn't really access) and reseated them. Once I did that, all 6GB were now available to me. I tried calling ASUS support also and it was really a waste of time.

Yup the BB guys tried reseating the RAM but it still only saw 2GB in Windows, but did see 6GB in the BIOS. How strange is that?! :D

So no one has any thoughts on using Wireless-N with this laptop?

I don't believe it's my router - I have a wireless gateway in my living room (hooked up to a switch) that's using my Wireless N SSID and working just fine.

It's not even picking up my wireless-N SSID. It doesn't even see it. I've tried manually connecting with no luck there either. It connects to my B/G SSID just fine.

Hmm, I did a search and I guess one of the Asus netbook models also uses the same wireless chip. People were saying that the AR9285 wifi chip can't connect to 5 GHz 802.11n...which I think my dual band router is using. So I'll look into that tonight.

    So...what's the problem? :)

What connection speed do you get when you're close to the access point - should be close to 150Mbps.

Unless I missed something, you haven't specified what wireless adapter you have. The stock one is single band (2.4GHz) - is that what you're referring to as "B/G"? It's not going to see SSIDs on the 5GHz band.

I have a D-Link DIR-825 dual band router. It can broadcast two SSIDs. I have one setup as an 802.11 b/g mixed mode access point for things like my phone that don't support 802.11n, and another setup as pure 802.11n. I guess I'm probably using 5 GHz for that second SSID.

You should still be able to get better than wireless G speed though...have you checked? :)

Also, an upgrade to an Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6200 wireless adapter is relatively inexpensive and it can use both bands.

Thanks ziddy, we all appreciate the knowledge you drop on this forum, the latest I've seen was that catalyst twitter feed and it is bookmarked :)

    Ugh! Hang in their man.

Indeed Mark won the first round and I felt pretty good yesterday about it arriving today, but alas, it still says departed from Memphis. FedEx hasn't made much sense in distance vs time vs method on these 4 cross country trips for me, but they do deliver when their first estimate comes up if not a day earlier. Mark and I each had a day early arrival over the original estimate.

Not that I had a choice, but FedEx is still my preferred shipper for anything. Unless it pops up today (and I'm constantly refreshing), I can only hope by 11-1200 tomorrow.

Mine's set up the same, only it's G-only on one SSID and N-only on another, and I'm connected to the N-only without issue.

Not sure what Mark is saying about it only being a 2.4ghz adapter and not seeing 5ghz, since mine obviously does and connects to it without issue. It's an Atheros though I forget the exact model #.

Still no model numbers mentioned. I'm going off the specs (from the Atheros site) for the model # that a few owners here reported installed in their machines. The specs for that model number stated 2.4GHz frequency band with max throughput 150Mbps. That's all I have to go on :)

Ah come on! Mine shipped today from somewhere in Canada (Ontario I think). It is shipping via FedEx's overnight/express shipping and the company I'm buying it from estimates it will be here around 2pm.. It should be very close between Quag and I, which timezone are you in Quag?

I'll probably end up making a very ecstatic post with the time received as well as my initial comments on it as I enjoyed these during my longgg wait.

I haven't noticed the power brick getting very hot. Warm, yes, but not hot. I keep my foot on it all the time.

I don't think this brick is all the large either. Have you seen the brick Dell sends for its port replicators on the E-series Latitudes? It makes the G73's look like a package of saltines.

Dudes i got my G73Jh from Best Buy today, so much crapware installed on this machine!! lol My gpu is not coming up in the temps, everything it comes up in, in Everest the motherboard is unknown, i want to know is it good to run desktop drivers or stay with mobile drivers, i wonder if their is a update, and also i remember reading i could control the lights under the hinges to be in three different colors, i still haven't figured that out.

IMO, not a good idea to run the destop driver, not sure if it even competitible at all.

You cannot control the light under the hinge, the 3 level brightness control is for the backlight keyboard...
