Then you want this. Shure is another great company alongside Sennheiser and Audio Technica for music studio equipment.

The Shure SRH440 is the one for you. It's very durable, you can twist the headband back and forth, no damage and retains it's shape. Very comfortable and it's closed back so you will get some isolation. Since it's Shure you can be guaranteed excellent sound reproduction.

Wow, these look great. I hadn't seen this particular model before. Wanted closed back due to using them in public on occasion. Thanks for the link!

...I may pick these up, soonish.

*edit* Found a great deal on Amazon and I'll have them in time for my trip this weekend. These fit exactly what I was looking for. The Senn HD-280 were too small, the Audio Technica ATH-A700 were too big for travel, and the Grado's were a little too fragile (plus being open). Thanks.

Ok, ive just done Furmark stability test with xtreme burn and post fx 1080p msaa8x. What ive noticed:

    1) Max temp after 10mins 94 degrees (which is fine right?)
    2) When temp hit 93, another level of fan speed hit (5mins in testing), which kept temps at 92-93 for the remaining time.
    3) Temp recorded with HWinfo for core was 85max, but memory had 94.

    Questions:

    a) Did anyone find software to control fan speed, because id like that final fan speed to turn on earlier (i dont mind a little bit of extra noise while im gaming, because i wont hear it)

    b) Does Furmark record mem speed, because this is what my HWinfo showed as max temp?

Boss? You mean Bose, maybe? Not really a brand I'm interested in. Hopefully I'll be using these with my G73 and playing some Crysis at the hotel by Sunday! :D

So two days after receiving my G73jh the thing went dead. I called Asus tech support, and after working on it they determined it was "DOA" and had an error with hardware. They had me send it back. I was sad. This was a couple weeks ago. :(

I finally got it back today. And, something was odd with my Hard drives. It showed one hard drive with 166 and one with 334 GB, and NOTHING ELSE!?! I called Asus (again) and this time they helped me map my second hard-drive. Then apologized (profusely) for forgetting to map it.

Anyhow, I didn't remember the C: (OS) partition being so small (166GB) before i sent it back. Did they partition the first HDD incorrectly? Also, If i install programs, do I have to install them to the OS drive, or can i run programs from another drive? Sorry this is my first ever computer with more then one HDD, and even more then one partition.

Thanks, sorry for sounding so n00b.

When I recieved my G73 it came with 4 or 5 partitions. It had the OS at 166GB, then each drive I think was split twice. I don't remember if the twice of the one drive included the OS or not.

I then merged drives to have 3. The OS, one that was the remainder of that HDD and then a third one at a full 500gb.

I just remember having one drive always show up and it was really small, and I kept going 'Oh yeah, the OS drive'.

Okay, basically, when I got my system back, the second drive (the one you removed the partition on) was not mapped at all. After talking with Tech Support and mapping it, I have it at 465 (not 500?), the OS at 166 and the second half of the OS one at 336. Do these numbers look right to you?

Also, lets say i want to install a game, does it have to be installed on the 166 GB drive, or can i install it on the 465 GB one? (sorry, ir noob)

    465 GB is correct....

They have 4 partition setup at factory default mode, exculding the hidden recovery partition.

You can always merge them all together using software like partion magic or so....

and yes... you can install games wherever you like... I personally like to install games and all other applications at the main drive (OS) and store all my data on the other one...

Yeah, I accidentally deleted one drive when merging it, so I had to figure out how to remap it (if that's the correct wording).

For some reason whenever you get harddrives, they never seem to be their full capacity. 465 does make sense. And the second half of the OS one does seem a little weird, but not unreasonable (166 + 336 = 502, maybe bad rounding?).

I installed all of my games on the 465gb partition, you just have to change the directory when installing. I used the 336gb partition for music, tv shows and other junk (school work etc). I then used the OS drive for like anti-virus, microsoft office, etc.

The one thing you will have to remain vigilant on is the changing of the directory when you install games. The first time you do it, do it slowly and you will see right away where it is installing, it will show a path - you can change that path.

All HD is advertised like that....

when they say 500GB.. which is actually 500,000,000,000 bytes which turn out to be 465 GB when window view it...

    actually, 500gb=4.294e^12 bits ;)

A good (and very solid) pair of USB gaming headphones is the the Logitech G35. Great sound and 7.1 digital surround ($100).
Astro A40: Probably the best gaming headphones available. Nuff said. $240 with mix-amp
Psyko 5.1's: Most intense and advanced headphones around. Hard to get. Expensive--but probably beast if you have the money (I sadly don't :( )

Well that didn't take long. If it's going to happen, best it happens early. It's a coin toss for whom to go to. If NCIX is going to send it to Asus for diag like Newegg would, you're best to send it to Asus yourself and save some time. If NCIX is going to replace without wasting time, go with them. Either way, imo, it's going to be replaced, not repaired.

Read a couple pages back, I gave him the heads up ;)

NCIX would have given me a new one, but I would have to wait for them to get stock, they are fresh out and backordered with no ETA for a new shipment. I was told the Canadian ASUS support place in Toronto has about a 48 hour turnaround.

Fedex picks it up tomorrow between 12 and 6 pm.

    I want it back now.

Someone correct me if I am wrong - but I don't the weight matters so much as the type of shipping. You can get something across the country overnight if you are willing to pay that much.

The reason is manufacturers use decimal and a computer counts in binary.

    Manufacturer: 1GB = 1000MB
    Computer: 1GB = 1024MB

    Modifier equation for GB: 500 / 1.072 = 466

Should work out well for you. Good luck.

RMA finished, they replaced my LCD (psychedelic screen of death) and shipped out my original unit (with the new LCD) yesterday. Let's hope it comes back in a working condition and stays that way for a while.

So no new unit (shipment has same serial #), maybe I'll get lucky and they won't have paved the drives. :)

Hey tailendforwards, concerning the 2nd and 3rd pic in your post. Have you ever handled your G73 with one hand while it's closed? Like pulling it out of a backpack using one hand squeezing the center of the side and heard a pop or snap.

It was addressed to me that during my boot video, it looks like I had a huge crack in the screen at one point. I brushed it off as part of the swirly stuff since it only shows for a short time. In your 2nd and 3rd pic, it looks like you also have cracks in the screen. Thanks.

In this case, I propose the same questions to you as above. Thanks.

I don't really think so. My screen was nearly perfectly split down the center vertically, with the left half white and the right side psychedelic. I've only used my machine at home except for one time, and I don't recall ever hearing any cracks or pops.

I have pulled it out with one hand - never heard a pop or a crack. I also never saw the crack, and I look at that screen a lot of both low and high brightness.

I think it is a swirl because of my camera that I am using along with the weird graphics. Cameras already have issues taking pictures of monitors of course with the refresh rate (or something), and I found it seemed to be like one of those funky mirrors at a carnival, depending on where I would take the picture from (like where I would put the centre of the camera) would make the swirls look a little different.

Yes, but it's still the 2nd one, just with a new GPU. So far, so good. I've got some videos to render tonight. Unigines DX11 Heaven 2.0, nVidias DX11 Hair, nVidias DX11 Water and depending on how I like the outcome, a video of how to replace an optical drive.

K, thanks. I might start a thread on this anyway and afaik, you coined the phrase "psychedelic screen of death" or PSOD (just what we need, BSOD, GSOD & PSOD :) ) or did you see it somewhere else?

Thanks. I forgot that I had this line of thought before and sure enough I handled it again with my hand in the center of the side and heard a pop, but after firing it up at work, there doesn't seem to be any issues.

Maybe I am just a brute and a n00b with my first 17" lappy (an unhealthy combination ;) ), but I wouldn't think it should be so sensitive.

Thanks for the help Quag. I uninstalled that version of works(7.0)and thought I had solved my problem, but after playing bbc2 for about two min. it froze yet again. This time after a forced shutdown I rebooted in safe mode and did a system restore back to the time I downloaded works 7.0 This seems to have worked cause I've played bbc2 for about an hour with no problems. I'm fixing to try Dirt2. Before, Dirt2 ran smooth as butter at the highest settings. I just don't understand what happened unless maybe there was a driver issue.

You shipped them your laptop and didn't wipe the drives?

I don't consider myself to be a very paranoid person and I wouldn't have done that. :) A quick boot and nuke (DBAN) would have seemed wise (I use the disk zero out option as it meets DOD standards now). Although I suppose you might not have had anything on it you cared about.

Okay so, when i first got my computer (weeks ago), i unpacked it, installed a game, and it played like it was a thing of magic.. it was amazing. Then something really bad happened, and i had to RMA it. I got it back today, and they messed up the HDD, and i had to remap it (see previous posts), now tonight i tried to play a game (the same one i was playing weeks ago when it was beautiful), and it is running like #*&%! I was running in "mud mode" and was running 5 fps!?!? WTH is up with that? I want to cry, I'm so frustrated with the entire thing.

I did notice that some of the "bloatware" that came on the computer originally is not here now. Did they not give me a full reimaging? Im i missing my video drivers? I looked for drivers for 'ATi Mobility Radeon HD 5870 GDDR5 1024MB" and couldn't find what i needed.

I know absolutely nothing about windows7 (or vista for that matter), so I'm having a bugger of a time figuring out what is up. This is also my first ATI card, so I don't know much about their site.. But when i goto AMD it doesn't show drivers for the 5870...

I looked at the "everything you need to know" from the first post, and it says:

Does the G73JH come with a lot of bloatware pre-installed?
Yes. It’s recommended (by me) to do a clean re-install of Windows 7 when you receive the laptop. Quadzilla states that there are 83 processes running straight out of the box.

My system (when i check uninstall a program) lists 33 programs installed (and 73 processes running). Does this sound right? Sorry I'm just at the end of my rope.

    1. Make sure you are not running @ battery / power saving mode. Go into Power4Gear and check it out.

    2. you can check under task manager and see how many processes is running...

I'm not dead certain where the 10.3 drivers are located but a quick fix might be this:
    Start-->search:device manager-->display adapters

hit the + next to display adapters, right click whatever drops down and hit "update driver"

someone who knows where to find the 10.3 drivers can give you the best fix.

yes, that is the 10.3 driver. It will upgrade your existing one if you are running stock driver.

    Entertainment mode should be fine...

you can also check with "HWinfo32" and make sure you have the correct GPU installed inside... ;)

The 6200 uses only two antennas.

Well i was getting around 30 FPS with the stock drivers before I had my RMA. After RMA I had 3-6 FPS (I don't think think they had any drivers in it then or something). Now I'm getting 80-95+ FPS. I think the beta drivers are pretty solid.

If you grab it with one hand on the right side, there is ALWAYS a pop/snap sound. I CAN NOT figure out what the sound is from though...I have done testing and can't pinpoint it. It is something plastic anyhow. But, I don't think it is causing any damage.

I notice this snapping sound too. It could just be the plastic flexing due to the weight balance, but it worries me a bit every time I take it out of my bag.

All I know it is DEFINITELY NOT the screen. Because if you try and lift the machine while the screen is open (near the right side of the keyboard) it makes the sound.

I think it is just the border of the plastic of the side and top moving slightly.

Regardless, I am not too worried.

...they're not beta drivers. They're WHQL-certified, posted on AMD's site and available for download, full version drivers.

On a different note, my HD caddy is apparently now leaving Stockholm, Sweden.

Hi, i just got my G73 in yesterday after ordering my A2 from Gentech on 2/16. Ive been following the g73 thread and this thread since the beginning of February and i don't ever recall seeing these questions -

Do i need the express video or whatever ASUS includes to use the webcam?
And is there a driver update for the built in microphone or is it just low quality? I sound robotic according to my friends
Also, what key am i accidentally hitting that makes me hit a couple letters to make a chinese character, and can i turn that off?

    Thanks for your help!
