Thats how it is with American products in foreign markets. Between exchange rates, customs, sales tax, and a bunch of other stuff, stuff is EXPENSIVE out there. In Germany a BMW M3 costs almost 2x as much as it does here... AND IT'S A GERMAN CAR (I don't even know how THAT works)!!

Your best bet is to buy from a US reseller who will ship if overseas and just pay the VAT yourself. It will be a bunch cheaper than buying it from home (I think).

@Phoenix, are you somewhere around here. Denis_iii sounds like he needs some G73 import advice.

Well I'm not gonna lie, I started talks with Micro Center's corporate office and asked them if I can get a refund on my G73 in the event I lose my patience with this laptop. I tried reminding the Micro Center where I purchased it from that I only had the laptop for not even three days after my first week and it failed, they could have refunded me then. Their corporate office is good so far in escalating my situation and they're talking to their Asus vendor representative...

Midterms passed without a working computer and finals is in four weeks. Not saying I'd completely abandon the laptop, but it's sorta disheartening that this wait had to come during an important time in academia land. That, plus I saw an m11x in person on campus the other day. That thing flies. Thinking about putting the money I would get back into one of those and a monitor. But on the other hand, I really am trying to give myself reasons to keep this laptop. =(

Right click on the executable(s), select properties, Compatibility tab, check box "run this program compatibility mode for" and make sure "windows XP (service pack 3)" is in the drop down box.

Try the ones for the macbook pros, or you can look them up on e-bay for this machine for like 20 bucks i believe.

Now, I don't know how reproduceable this is, but I got this when I alt-tabbed back into Just Cause 2 after checking a gmail chat conversation.

Is this an RMA-thing? It was only like that for about a second, to a second-and-a-half and then it went right back to the normal beautiful graphics.

I was wondering if it might be the fact that I have a USB cooler, a deathadder and my carcharias plugged in.

Could my GPU be dying? I'm about to restart my computer to see if I can get it to come up again.

Restart and try again, i am just experiencing the powerful graphics card and the core i7 which one day will be a 920. Also take out the battery and the powercord and then plug everything back in and it should be fine. Why don't you window the game when you want to do that? Then go back to full screen.

Just used to alt-tabbing. Why spend all the time to window and resize?

I just restarted, turned off the cooler and everything and plugged everything back in.

I powered up BC2 and left an internet window open to alt-tab to. I got the same screen once, and then no more. Then I went into the server browser, selected my filters and when I double clicked on a server I got that screen again and BC2 crashed.

Is it a screwed up setting, GPU being buggered, too much outgoing power or something else? = /.

I've had the laptop since March 23rd and this is the first time I have had any issues...

What temps are you running on your gpu? Did you paste it? Do you do intensive gaming at high resolutions? BC2 online right? What type of position do you have the notebook under with the cooler? Is it raised up? Maybe just don't do alt-tabbing for a while, did you update the graphics driver recently? I will get back to you i am exhausted though, just leave the reply. Good luck, also search through the Clevo and Alienware forums.

I haven't been tracking it too closely, the highest I saw was 94C, though during a fairly long session of BC2.

BC2 online, the first picture was of Just Cause 2 singleplayer. Attached is a new picture of BC2, it crashed again on me.

The laptop is right on top of the cooler, on top of my lap, There is the same clearance under it as there would be under a desk - I kept my legs positioned that way to make it so. It's a Thermaltake Massive23 Aluminium one.

There is room under the cooler for the air, and there are openings on the side to get the air through. The attached picture is how I had it all sitting when BC2 crashed on me the most recent time.

I am using the 10.3 preview drivers, iirc.

What am I looking for in the Alienware/Clevo? The same issues?

While my problem was permafixed to that look (i.e. through bios boot and all) and yours is happening while gaming and not yet permafixed, it all too reminiscent of this; mine didn't ease into it, it just happened and stayed that way.

Is that the Zalman NC2000 you have there?

Quick question, the grey screen of death that people here have talked about...is it accompanied by a really obnoxious loud buzzing noise from the speakers?

I've had my new laptop crash twice like that...the first time, it presented a two-color (alternating light and dark brown vertical lines) along with a buzzing noise from the speakers (not the GPU) that didn't go away until I held the power button down long enough for it to fully power off. The second time, I just lost video signal as well.

Both times I was messing around with the included G73JH screensaver, so I suspect that's the culprit. The first time I was using the Zune software to listen to music at the same time. I haven't really pushed my laptop hard yet; I've watched a bit of a Blu-Ray movie, played a tiny bit of Borderlands, and did one race in Dirt 2. I haven't seen any other odd behavior from the laptop at all. I'm running the latest official 10.3 ATI drivers.

(BTW, do beta ATI drivers interfere with Blu-ray playback? I read somewhere that you have to be using WHQL drivers to play back Blu-ray movies?)

Yeah, I've seen your woes (followed most woes very closely - this thing is my first born child) and that's what got me on the line of thinking and wondering if it is an RMA thing. Should I try pushing it further, cranking up all the settings to see if I can get it to happen like you had or should I be gentle and hope it goes away?

Not the Zalman, I got the Thermaltake Massive23. It's very, very quiet. Like as quiet at the laptop itself.

Some things I am still wanting:

    1) A program that enables the keyboard lights before the login screen comes up. I know they "can" come on before the login screen as they flash upon boot.

    2) A really nice backpack or shoulder bag that is a perfect fit for the G73. I am looking for durability and lots of room for accessories (ie pockets). Why is no one posting pics of their's?

    3) SSDs to drop in price (crossing fingers)...it would be sweet to have a 256GB SSD as the primary drive.

    Can anyone help with these?

    Hi all,

first of all, sorry if the question has already been asked, i tried to read every posts but i only managed to read around 50 pages of the G73jh threads (owners + official)... since i wonder if i have to return it to the shop where I have bought it, i am a little pushed by time (only have a short period to return it).

I own my G73 for a week and I'm a little disappointed about noise.
I've read everywhere that this notebook is quiet so i wonder if mine doesn't have a problem (core i5 430 / 4GB) :
fans are always ON and sounds to me very noisy even when doing nothing at all and it begins right after boot (the ambient temperature is at around 19°C).
Changing power4gear profile doesn't change anything even in battery saving mode.
Speedfan doesn't say the fan speed but displays core temps that are very low (i don't even know if it is accurate or not) : the 4 cores are all less than 25°C at idle. looks like nothing justifying such air flow.

    My questions are :
    - are the fans of your G73JH always ON ? (some ppl seem to say they can't hear it at all when idle).
    - when they turn ON, is it like me right after boot or only in intensive usage ?
    - is there a way to display and/or control the fan speed on g73 ?

    thanks in advance

Cuz taking pics and hosting and quoting is a pain in the xxx? ;)

I really like my Slappa MASK- plenty of room and tons of pockets. It's pricey though. If it's in your price range I can maybe work on getting some screenies up. I still owe another member the bluetooth model# as I didn't get to play with the laptop yesterday (still messing with contractors in our house).

Yes, beat the ever living crap out of that GPU, make it squeal (not by OCing though). If it is going to be a problem, you want it to show its ugly face now.
The only way I could imagine it would "go away" is with some serious driver changes and even then, if it's the hardware, it isn't going to go away; you would either have to put up with it or it will get worse, just my 2 cents.

You...don't? Maybe if you get a firewire > USB adapter.

As far as the fan question, mine is honestly very silent. It doesn't seem to run all the time and only really speeds up when gaming or movie watching. I don't even notice most of the time because that's when I have the volume up a bit. This system is very quiet for me- near silent all the time.

Any suggestions on how to do that more effectively than just furmark?

EDIT: After 3 minutes of furmark, with the Thermaltake Massive23 going I got to 94C...

I wouldn't be worried about this, others have reported max temps of 105 with Furmark. No game should ever stress the card as much as Furmark does. From what I've read it looks as if the Thermaltake coolers are lowering temps by about 5C, which we can assume it would bring yours to 100C, which doesn't seem too bad with Furmark.

Looks like my G73JH is RMA-bound. I opened up Vantage and it pooped the bed.

    Attached are pictures.

How do I RMA? Heh, I am in Canada and bought from NCIX.com. Do I send it there, do I call around or do I send it to ASUS in California?

Gonna miss it. Look at that spread I have of matching accessories for it...

I was given the option of sending it to ASUS in Toronto or sending it to NCIX in Richmond BC. Which would be the better option? He mentioned on the phone that ASUS in Toronto would likely have a 48 hour turnaround time, but I would probably get the same one, but repaired. Otherwise if I send it to NCIX as soon as they get stock (they are currently out) they will send me a brand new unit.

This is the first and only issue I have had with this laptop, other than the fans blowing a lot - so getting it repaired wouldn't be bad, but I would also assume that the new shipments of G73JH probably have better QA.

    Any suggestions?

I am currently putting it back in it's box, distraught over the loss of my first child (sorry MacBook Pro, you're now a step-son).

Get a new one in my opinion. Your fans SHOULD NOT be loud or blow hard...at least mine don't.

Unless of course you have done so much with yours that you don't want to recover anything - then again - they will probably go back to factory settings to repair it.

The new one could be more than a week the guy at NCIX said. He didn't have an ETA for their next shipment and they are backordered. The lady on the phone at ASUS said that they can't guarantee a replacement, but from the sounds of it, to maintain the 48 hour turn around it will prob. be replaced.

If I don't get a new one it's not too big of a deal, I liked mine. If I get a new one, that's pretty cool too.

Sending it to ASUS, they have Fedex coming by tomorrow to pick it up.

I hit 103C with all setting to max on 10 mins of Furmark running. Not too much concern seriously.

I have the exact same cooler as yours, however that doesn't seem to help much when running Furmark, bring the max temp down by 1-2C... hitting 102C or so after 10 mins..

Hopefully last OT post for me. The Carcharias cost me just over 80$ CAD. So about the same in American right now.

How long has it been now? A week and a half? Two weeks?

It left my hands 3/25/2010. I can't do the math - it's too painful :)

This might possibly be one of the last posts I make on this thread. I just got my replacement A1 in from FedEx. I was never called by ASUS about the incoming shipment, I was told by the person from Micro Center corporate office only after the rep I was working with had to speak with Micro Center's ASUS representative (so I never got a call straight from tech support saying what had happened and that they'll send me a laptop at all).

Fired this lappy up and to my dismay, two dead pixels on the right side of the screen. That plus when I boot from factory default, I get error messages saying system files are missing and it boots into a Windows 98-ish theme. Laaaaaaame. I was told by Micro Center corporate office to bring this laptop back to the store I purchased it from and they'll see what they can do to get my money back. =(

It looks like my time with the G73 is about to come to an end. This is a beast of a laptop, I just can't deal with all of these problems when I purchases this lappy for school. I'll be lurking the boards, you might see me at the Alienware boards because I'm thisclose to purchasing an m11x. Thanks for all your help guys. Til' next time...

So has anyone figured how to reassign those three buttons in the top left? I dont really need them: backlight can be adjusted using fn+f3/4, turbo mode slows performance and i dont even install that color adustment software. I could really use those buttons for something else if possible (wireless on/off etc. because now it takes 4 click to switch from everything on to everything off and back using fn+f2)

Any ideas if it would be possible?
