The razer eh, I was originally looking into the world of warcraft headset (yea I'm such a wow geek). Price isn't a HUGE concern, but people keep complaining about the headset snapping at the plastic extender areas so nevermind it. I'll look into this carchihuahua (whatever =p) thing.

Hi i have a G73JH TZ
Can anyone tell me where i can change the base settings for the speakers? -

Do I need a particular software/driver installed to access the bass settings? I've only installed the realtek drivers and do not see a bass setting under the sound option.

I would like to get in contact with someone from Asus about this notebook who is in the know. I might be critical but with a laptop this expensive I think I should be.
It seems that the right fan indeed always runs and runs at a higher volume. This shouldn't have to be. I have noticed some things which bother me:
1) Why doesn't the 5870 auto throttle the core and memory? Previous high end Radeons did that. This is just weird in my book and I don't call it normal.
2) Why is the memory still clocked at 1000 MHz when the core is at 300 MHz? GDDR5 produces enough heat as it is and also uses a lot of power.
3) Why not put the 5870 on 200 MHz Core and 300 MHz memory. My test with the AMD GPU clock tool when I select those clocks show that it saves 6 degrees.
If they reduce the core and memory clock at idle mode the 5870 is still fast enough for office work and battery mode but with the following advantages:
1) saves more battery power because GDDR5 uses a lot;
2) lower temps meaning at idle the right fan can run at a lower speed. As low as the left fan should be possible then.
In my opinion this would simply be a new BIOS and would make the laptop a lot, lot better. So I would like Asus to review their 5870 cooling and to make it more silent when idle. I have no problem with the cooling throttling up fast when you do something but when you browse the internet and do office work it should be more silent and it can be more silent.
As it is now the laptop is not silent when idle. You must be slightly def to call it silent. -

Lol did not know you are in this forum. Yeah BIG thanks for that video. I actually used that to describe the tech guys the error. It is the exact same replicate of what happens to me. The sound however I only get when the creative suite was installed. Anyway thanks for that. Fingers crossed about the new GPU but I guess they will test it a bit before sending it back. -

Anyone tried fixing the slight flex under the left palmrest with a piece of cardboard? Doing a lot of typing today and noticed it for the first time. Would you go under the HD or pop out the keyboard?

See this for what I mean. -
I hate to say it, but...
My G73 is absolutely silent. I can not hear anything at all unless I put my ear right against the keyboard or near the back vents.

In windows 7
1. Click start and you will see search programs and files.
2. In search programs and files type: Disk Manage
3. "You will see create and format hard disk partitions"
4. Click on that and the disk manager will come up.
5. you will see a list of all storage devices attached to your computer
6. On the top you will see Volume, layout, Type, File system etc... Ignore that
7. Further toward the bottom you will see "disk 0" "disk 1" "cd-rom 0" That is what you're looking for. you want the one with the black bar across the top not the blue bar. Black stands for unallocated blue is allocated which means its already got a file system.
8. Its probably listed as "disk 1".
9. Right click on the unallocated disk that you found and choose format.
10. volume label is just a name. Pick whatever you like. NTFS, Default, and quick format should all be selected.
11. That should be all you need. -

Compare your noise rating to a Ferrari at an idle.!!!
Come on guys, you can feel the love in here today. -
Same, mine isn't dead silent when idle. But it's pretty much the same volume even under load, so can't really complain here. Plus its so cool to the touch compared to my old XPS.

On a related note, anyone know of a source for a second drive bracket? -
PulsatingQuasar Notebook Consultant
Finally.....a lot more people have the same experience as I have. I have the same experiences as Lord Sloth and zergslayer69.
So either there is something going on with the fan and not only the one I have or some people just don't seem to hear the noise very well and more or less experience it as silent.
But I am still very critical about the idle mode of the Radeon because it could produce less heat, be more silent and lengthen the battery live:
My points remain:
1) why is there no auto throttle? Just about any mobile and desktop graphics card has it.
2) why does the memory clock remain at 1000 MHz at 300 MHz core. GDDR5 uses a lot of power and produces more then enough heat.
3) why not at battery saving mode use core 200 MHz and memory 300 MHz? This shaves off 6 to 8 degrees on the high fan level it runs now. With a card as fast as the 5870 there would still be more than enough power but the advantages are numerous. Less heat means lower fan level and also means less operating power which means a longer battery live.
Is it really wrong to be critical about a laptop costing me 1800 euro's? I don't think so. I know I am right about all 3 points above and can't understand why Asus didn't do anything about it. -
My hearing is normal. It it normal for the back air vents to be hot to the touch when sitting idle? (a minute after a boot). -
PulsatingQuasar Notebook Consultant
And even 1 more. Thank god. I thought I was going absolutely nuts.
I have the same as you QuantumBinary. -
well mine finally arrived. wooo hooo burning the recovery disk now. so im on my old slow compac. will be back when i have the time to play half life.
-
I believe this is normal... consider again.. this is the gaming notebook...
I can hear right side fan sinning under idle mode... note dead silent but that is acceptable....
Those who is dead silent may have applied special thermal compound or the GPU itself is a decent one...
My idle temp is ~ 58C... and I did monitor that the fan will start kicking to a low level @ ~52C....
As of GPU auto throttle... I am not sure... There's another thread just now complaining Intel has that auto throttle design apply on their CPU...under battery mode... -
PulsatingQuasar Notebook Consultant
OK, where is that?
I know that even high end mobile Radeons a year ago put in for example the MSI GT725 laptop were able to auto throttle when on AC adapter. I also know that just about every graphic chip auto throttles and when it does clocks down the memory a lot also.
So I know I'm pretty much right about the 3 points I have about the Radeon.
I just want to be able to find some sort of way to get this criticism to Asus so they can fix it in a BIOS update so the GPU fan can run somewhat slower and make this a much better laptop.
I have no problem with fan noise when doing something but when I do office work and browse the internet it should be as silent as possible and it can. The Radeon and it's memory don't have to run that fast when it's doing nothing. -

Twas bored last night and did a little comparison of my G73 vs. one of my game desktops. Just ran 3DMark05.
Desktop:
Phenom II X4 940
4GB DDR2 1066
8800Ultra (actually a GTX @ 612/1566/900)
The desktop won. It was pretty close but it won. The 3 GHz Phenom had more of an advantage than the 8800 Ultra though, not surprising considering it has 4x 3GHz cores that surely dramatically outgun an i7 that was probably at 2GHz or so.
I'm thinking that 3DMark05, being designed for shader model 2 for the most part, may not be shader-heavy enough for the Radeon to beat the 8800Ultra's superior pixel fillrate and bandwidth. The Radeon has a lot more powerful shader hardware. I don't count this as a unrealistic test result though because games aren't always shader bound.
It does give you an idea how this Mobility 5870 is nowhere near a desktop 5870. -
Quagmire LXIX Have Laptop, Will Travel!
By PM, but I'm posting (double posting
).
Where a cooler does help is pushing cool air through the slots on the bottom to assist with the cooling of system memory, HDDs and the large heatsink. Having the panel removed on the bottom drastically increases the efficiency of this purpose.
In comparison of the AMD GPU Clock Tool and HWiNFO32, ziddy is correct in MemIO reading.
AMD Tool / HWiNFO32
TSS0 = GPU DispIO
TSS1 = GPU MemIO
TSS2 = GPU Shader or Thermal Diode
HWiNFO32 shows GPU Shader and GPU Thermal Diode match tick for tick. So according to these wordings, none appear to actually be the VRAM chips.
Very early on TSS1 was described as VRAM and nobody knew what TSS2 was. With HWiFO32, we now have them named.
Regardless, what the laptop cooler does do for me is lower TSS1 & 2 by 3-5C when the panel is removed and less when the panel is on. It does not do much for the core at all, arguably -1C, which is not worth an argument.
By this type of testing, I can guess the minus 3-5C on the MemIO and GPU Shader is due to the cooler air being forced onto the heatsink, but IDK where those devices should be, I assume in the GPU chip itself, but could be attached to the heatsink and that's why it can get cooler with a cooler, I can't explain why, but it does. I don't claim to know the architecture, only the results of my testing.
The G73 does pull in air from the bottom slots, it's a fact, so pushing cooler air in is an assist and it's a very reasonable conclusion. Panel OFF. This air helps with the HDDs (measured), it only makes sense that the system memory would benefit, but I have not placed a probe on it either way to measure and it would make sense that it also cools that large silver heatsink you see when pulling the panel off.
Now, does this all translate into the necessity of a cooler for the G73? NO, because the primary function of a laptop cooler is not needed for the G73 as the bottom does not get hot due to the design.
Will a cooler and the panel being off assist and cool some temps down? YES, I've seen -1C on CPU and GPU cores and -3to5C on MemIO and GPU Shader, whatever they mean for you.
You will not find a magic cooling solution for the G73 with a laptop cooler imo.
A good paste and pad job on your components will be much more productive than any cooler can be. Laptop cooling designs and Desktop cooling designs are totally different beasts.

So I downloaded the latest realtek drivers from here
http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads...=24&Level=4&Conn=3&DownTypeID=3&GetDown=false
However I still do not see the subwoofer slider or tab or whatever. Anyone care to do a step by step walkthrough for me to finding this thing? =)
Edit: Also, how do I get two finger scrolling to work on the touchpad? I've installed the driver on the disc and I only see 1 finger scrolling and pinch zoom under the scrolling section. -
I never found anything to specifically control the subwoofer.
AFAIK, it's just wired to the output amplifier for low frequencies.
The Creative bass boost is the closest relevant control I saw. -
is the Bestbuy g73jh High Definition at 1600x900? If yes is it 720p?
If not then why did BestBuy advertised it as High Def?
Thanks -
tailendforwards Notebook Consultant
The one at BB is 720. Technically it is considered high-definition, but the A1, A2 and I think X1 all have the 1920 x 1060 resolution which is considered true or full HD high definition. -
Switching back to the ATI video drivers on the Asus.com website (which I believe are the 9.12 drivers?) resolved the GSOD issue I was having with FurMark...well, I didn't do extensive testing, but it not missing a beat in Furmark for 3 minutes straight when previously it wouldn't last 30 seconds...I'm willing to call that fixed.
Maybe the 10.4 drivers will work better for me. *crosses fingers* -
Hi,
I was wondering if any owners here have upgraded the thermal paste on the GPU? About how long does it take to strip the G73JH down and then reassemble? I would only do the GPU myself to avoid invalidating the warranty.
I understand that getting to the GPU and heatsink is a bit of a mission, and hence resellers such as Xotic PC aren't offering to do it, or are charging a huge amount ($125 at Powernotebooks).
As a comparison I can get to the heatsink/CPU in my Dell XPS M170 in about 15 minutes, then another 15 to put back together. If it takes less than 2 hours to do the G73 it is probably cost effective to do it myself!
Cheers! -
Here's a picture of my new G73JH...
I need a better camera, I've had this Sony one for about 4 years now.
Had to take the opportunity to show off my Droid as well. -
@SpicySi
Ok, I'll go ahead and tell you that I've ripped apart every laptop I've ever owned to apply AS5 to the cpu/gpu but the G73 is the first one where I feel is totally not necessary. Just use the computer first and watch the temps. They're not high at all. Really not worth tearing it apart unless you're going to upgrade some hardware component. -
I am on solar power with a 1500w pure sine wave inverter, my G73JH power brick when plugged into the laptop causes the lights in my house to flicker, and the power brick makes a strange buzzing noise.
I think the power brick is at fault (poorly/cheaply made?) and is affecting the power factor in my house, this would not be noticeable in a house running off the grid..
Does anyone know if there is a replacement power brick i can buy which is higher output (cleaner output)?
Found this one on ebay but i don't know if the tip will fit..

Any help would be appreciated

After switching back to the older drivers there have been no issues, and the middle temp maxes out at 93c for the memory, the last one is about 90c, and the first one is about 85c. Ambient temperature is 26.6c. -

Hello I see that now are g73jh above 1889.99 USD in best buy is one for 1199.99 USD, about 2 or 3 months there will be more notebooks at that price in other stores or buy it now?
the differences are:
Ram: 6GB ---- 8GB
Optical Drive: DVD ---- Blue Ray
Resolution: 1600 x 900 ---- 1080p (Full HD 2 are?) For games that would be the ideal resolution?
these laptops be available in the few months? -
my g73jh is amazing
.but i have an issue with my space bar. sometimes i hahve to press it twice and ive tested it..also . when im streaming a video online . . my laptop sometimes lags and i have to restart to fix it...and im, not doing alot maybe havbe like 5 windows open in differentr websites..but i figure with 8gig of ram it shouldnt be an issue at all..any thoughts?

What date is everyone filling out for the warranty card? All I got was a receipt with the order date in my shipment box. With so many of us ordering and receiving the G73 weeks or months later it seems like the later date is applicable but not sure how ASUS considers this.
-
My guess is that they eliminated throttling since this notebook has absolutely no problems with heat. I've seen, and heard of so many notebooks that throttle too early which causes the unbearable stuttering problem. My old toshiba was not able to play games despite being a gaming notebook until a bios update came out a year after i bought it. I think they may have just skipped auto-throttling in so that they could guarantee no stuttering.
However, I am still curious as to what battery life gains you are getting when you underclock the GPU?
Also, there has been 3 times (out of ~7 total) that my laptop has failed to sleep. The screen turns off yet it doesn't actually complete the sleeping process. If anyone knows anything off hand feel free to mention it, however I will eventually google it if it happens some more. -

@v17al
Well, I don't have any problems with down clocking the Radeon. When I stick it at 200 Mhz core and 200 MHz memory it is still fast enough to do 9 FPS in Furmark which is fast enough for most battery saving and silent operations.
When doing nothing the Radeon will drop from 56 degrees to between 48 and 52 degrees when at 200 MHz. When it hits the 48 degrees the fan stops!! And at 52 starts it up again. This is weird because the fan from the Radeon either stops or runs 3 or 4 levels faster then the CPU fan.
I'm sorry but I will not shut up about this. Asus has messed up big time on the clocking of the GPU, it's auto throtteling and on it's fan profile.
About half of the people here don't experience the laptop as silent when it's idle while my tests have shown clearly that it can be near silent for our half too if Asus would just fix the high clocks on the Radeon for battery saving and fix the fan profile so the fan is also able to run at the low speeds it does for the CPU. The GPU fan never runs at the low speed the CPU fan does. It just stops before that. Even on the lower clock it just stops and then starts again on a higher speed it ever does for the CPU fan.
With these lower clocks Asus could run the fan at the same low speed as the CPU fan. That one is actually whisper silent because the harddisk over power it on that sound level.
Some come on Asus. Get your act together and fix this for us. -
Might I suggest talking to the source instead of a forum of users? -
PulsatingQuasar Notebook Consultant
I would very much like to talk to the source but when I talk to Asus support I will just get someone who can't do anything about it. I need to get in contact with someone from Asus that can actually talk to the G73JH guys and say look, this and this is going on so fix it.
Asus will also be faster inclined to take the problem seriously if everyone that experiences the noise level calls. Because it can be resolved. Easily. I have just shown it. In one day. -
-
-
PulsatingQuasar Notebook Consultant
I'll have to measure that but since the temps drop when down clocking it draws less power so it prolongs battery live. I will have to measure how much so it will take some time to do that.
-
just charge it to full, underclock it just post the windows estimates, those ought to show any drastic changes.
-
Quasar, Apple release an updated MacBook Pro 17" and $100 less than before! I bet that thing runs silent. If you want silent, and if not having silence is making you that angry, I'd buy that.
Cause pretty much guaranteed, Asus is not going to change how the fan operates in the G73 just for you.
You say they messed up and I say they got it right. If you were to say I bought the wrong laptop for me, I would then agree with you.
