Hey guys, I want to buy this laptop. Can someone tell me about plastic. What about plastic around the keys on keyboard? Is it glossy or matte? What about glossy plastic details on laptop?
    Thanks

All matte, and some rubberish materials around too. The soft type of plastic not the hard cheap ones.

The plastic is light and sturdy. All matte finish with rubberized surface on the cover and around the palm rest and touchpad.

As long as you don't plan to do anything. The fans spin up even on Flash content in Safari, making it significantly louder than the G73. My G73 is quiet (not silent, quiet) and stays that way even under heavy gaming loads. The Mac sounds like a hair dryer while gaming, making it a not-so-nice experience unless you have sound isolating headphones.

Mind you, I love my MacBook Pro, but it's not a gaming rig by any stretch.

I have to agree with tailendforwards. Gaming notebook (most powerful one under 2K) vs the most expensive notebook you can buy for mediocre hardware...

    I sense troll also.

Whatever the case , we are inclined to answer... the ASUS is better... especially since u get much better specs and cooling for way cheaper... get the Asus and u won't regret... get the Macbook and in 1 year u'll be asking for a new laptop.. with the Asus , for a lower price , u'll stay with it for 2-3 years...

    It's the i7 720QM.

The Extreme is only for the 920

The vPro features are included in all the 5 series chipsets. The G73 uses the HD55 so those features are included.

There is no pro version, none, nada. All i7 have the intel virtualization features. Why are so hung up on vPro anyways, it's useless for gaming laptops, primarily only use for business and IT admins.

And only the 920 is extreme.

Only problem the Creative software gave me was with its audio enhancements enabled, starting Steam would hang the system.

Even though the Asus G73Jh webpage specifications state that the G73Jh can support the Intel® Core™ i7 Processor 620M/820QM/720QM, Intel® Core™ i5 Processor 540M/520M/430M, and the Intel® Core™ i3 Processor 350M/330M, so far, the Asus US G73Jh models available from BestBuy, G73JH-RBBX05 and G73JH-RBBX09, both come with the i7-720QM, only. The US G73Jh-A1, (or A2), models' stock cpu is the same i7-720QM, but some resellers offer the option of upgrading it to the i7-820QM, or the i7-920XM (Extreme Edition). These are all from the Intel® Core™ i7 Mobile Processor line of CPUs. The Intel Core i7 Extreme Edition CPUs are offered in both Mobile, ( i7-920XM), as well as Desktop versions, ( i7-965, i7-975, and i7-980X), and as you would assume, the Mobile i7-920XM, is the only Extreme Edition CPU that's sometimes offered as an upgrade option for the G73Jh, (even though it's not listed as supported, on the Asus specification page). There is however, a Clevo laptop model that does support the Desktop Extreme Edition CPU, the D900F. It's a beast.

Intel vPro technology is a whole set of additional features which are enabled through not only the CPU, but the Chipset, and the OS, as well. As previously mentioned, these features are strictly aimed at business/IT users, because they include features such as Intel Active Management Technology (Intel AMT), Intel Anti-Theft Technology (Intel AT), and Intel Trusted Execution Technology (Intel TXT). The Wikipedia entry on vPro has a pretty good, concise description of the technology. vPro features were first introduced with the Core 2 CPUs and Centrino 2 chipsets, and Intel recently announced that the 2010 i7 and i5 Core CPUs would include vPro support. It's just unclear whether the older i7/i5 CPUs will support these vPro features, or not. Although without chipset, and OS, support, the point is moot. The Q57 Express Chipset specifically mention vPro feature support, so in the future should someone want a vPro PC, then you'll need to make sure more than just the CPU supports it. Lastly I don't think that the G73Jh's chipset, the HM55, supports all of the vPro features, but it does interestingly enough support Intel Anti-Theft Technology (Intel AT). For what it's worth, I wouldn't want a vPro enabled PC, (couldn't stand AMT), so I wouldn't care whether my CPU supported it or not.

    Good Luck..

What's wrong with it? .IMO the keys are good. I barely need to touch them. Either all the ppl who complain about the keys being hard to push have girly hands? Or mine are just overly powerful? :D The fan noise is there but it's not as loud and my desk top in the cabnet 2 feet away.

I'm using the A2 model (i7-720QM, 1.6 GHz) with Windows Server 2008 R2 running 5 1GB dual-VCPU virtual machines via Hyper-V (Intel-VT detected) and can still run Visual Studio 2010 on the host without any major slowdown. It makes for a pretty solid distributed application test environment, as the VM distribution includes:

    1 AD Controller / SQL Server 2008
    2 Application Servers
    1 Web Server
1 General Purpose Server (likely to be another DB to test the MS DTC)

Pretty bad for mobile development if you ask me. :)

Whats the difference between the 1199 model at best by and all the others. I know screen rez, ram, hdd size, proc, blueray, and bluetooth. But is it really only a 1.2mp camera on the cheap best buy model, or is it just a typo? I seen on I think newegg that the second hdd bay isn't usable on some models. Also isn't most of those things upgradeable? Sorry for all the questions but I wanna get some clarification before I take the plunge.

    Thanks in advance.

    BB model 1200 I think.
Reseller A2 model is 1500 with cash discount.

You lose, extra year of warranty, no mouse or backpack, one less hard drive, lower res and (from what I've read) much crappier screen, less ram. And maybe some other stuff I missed.

So the question is, is 300 bucks worth getting all that? If not, just go with the BB model.

Managed to fit in an 1TB WD Hard Drive - WD10TPVT
It is a little bit ugly as the disk does not rest on its body and is a little bit projecting. It fits though ... And is kind of ideal addition for me as the other one is a 128 GB SSD.

I have the same installed in mine. I'm guessing you have it installed in one of the standard hard drive bays.

I replaced my dvd drive with a optical bay caddy. I used the face plate and also took off the bracket on the back that is screwed into place and attached it. So now I have 80GB SSD, 500GB, and 1TB.

Yes the G73Jh does come with the Express gate installed from the factory. Use the second button above the esc key to start the computer. This will bring up express gate.

    Question about installing an SSD:

If I replace the system drive with an SSD drive:
    - will the second HDD drive spin up if the SSD is accessed (hard to check with the 2 HDDs I have now if they spin up/down together or independently
    - would there be a way to disable the HDD to keep it from spinning up (i.e. when I know I won't need to access it until further notice)

Apart from speed, I'm looking for an SSD for the quietness, but I'd also like to keep the second HDD as a portable larger data store for the less-accessed data

    Just finished doing this...
    Installed Intel X25-M 160GB
    1. Took out the Primary HD (bay on right with cover open and front edge of laptop facing you -vents at the back)
replaced with Intel SSD (loaded into the caddy that housed the former Primary HD)
    2. Pulled out the secondary HD (temporarily)
    closed the cover backup
    3. Did a Clean Install from Windows 7 disk (iso)
Loaded all my software on the new SSD
    4. re-opened the cover and placed back in the second bay the secondary drive.
    Closed up cover
Let Windows find the drive and Bingo there is your "Data" drive. My secondary Drive came partitioned into 2 partitions from Factory (235 Gb each)

Quiet as a mouse and blazing fast! SSD rocks

I posted this in the other megathread for the G73, but I think this is probably the better place for it.

Called ASUS today to check on the status of my G73JH. I asked about when it would take, I was quoted the 48 hour turnaround. Despite on the RMA site saying it was (waiting) he said it was being diagnosed. The issues are pretty clear cut, you turn it on and you can see it. He was very scripted, everything from 'please wait, I'm pulling up your RMA case' and 'just to recap, the reasons for your call were...'

They've now told me that it would be 48-72 hour turnaround, but if it takes longer than that they are waiting for parts.

Anyone know if I could get them to send it back and I could RMA it to NCIX.com instead of ASUS? NCIX.com got a big shipment of them just the other day.

Also, what other options do I have? Exam week(s) is (are) coming up, and after that I want a few days of gaming/relaxing, and this MBP can't really run too much any more.

Just got my A2 at the beginning of April. Had to go through these forums for the fixes on a few of the known issues... I settled for the A2 instead of waiting for the A1, and Ken over at Gentech hooked it up like the A1 anyway. The only problem I'm still running into seems to be the keyboard keystroke issue that's mentioned in other threads.

I love the laptop otherwise. :D Yay!
