When you turn them off how? With the lighting (stealth) button? If so, you need to use Fn-F4 (after you've turned lighting back on with the lighting button).

All I can say is that after a format, the keyboard lights don't work. But after you install the atk package (I think it's this one, I could be wrong) it works again. But it doesn't seem like this issue applies.

What if I can't turn the keyboard light on at all, even using FN+F4?

I personally had to send mine in to get that fixed.

If the keyboard lights flash on/off during boot then you're probably just missing the keyboard driver. If they don't flash on/off during boot then...good luck :)

(Note Fn-F4 won't work until you're logged in to Windows)

just noticed Realtek has HD audio drivers that are dated 04/09/2010 and ATI HDMI drivers 2/12/2010

these are newer than the ones on my system... anyone using these? better/worse? I downloaded them and might try installing if no one comments

lay off any driver updates unless you current drivers are preventing you from doing something. Most of the issues with the asus has been reported with driver updates of different things.

I'm usually leary of updating, but after trying the Creative drivers and having them lock my system, I was hoping for more options in the Realtek ones, mainly an equalizer or bass boost. Plus, my Bluray player squeals at me until I turn off the passthru and force DTS while in HDMI mode. I'd like to get the TrueHD playing.

    Hmmm...well, we'll see,

    EDIT to add:
Bored at work, so I loaded the drivers. No great noticeable difference BUT... not sure if the option was there before, but I found the bass boost in the Realtek drivers -

Control Panel ... hardware & Sound ... sound... select speakers ... properties ... enhancements tab ... check equalizer ... then pick the Bass option in the drop down box. Plus, if you hit the '...' button next to it you can tweak the equalizer settings. No longer a need for me to hope for a fix with the Creative drivers... sounds much better in games now.

If you were looking for bass adjustment you should be able to do it on the Creative software application instead of realtek o_O Atleast on mine I can.

Yes! I didn't even take off the plastic screen cover that the laptop comes with before I received my screen and keyboard protector and placed it on. The only place that actually had one was on ebay. The seller is located in China, but I did not have a problem with them. Plus he sells the two together. The only thing is that it might take a little over a week, but packaged arrived well packed and was well worth it! Just take extra care when place the huge screen protector!

What would be the easiest way to get digital optical or digital coax audio out on this laptop, so that I can hook it up to my home theater setup and get surround sound? Unfortunately, my receiver only does audio pass through over HDMI.

10.6 is leaked? heh, thats fast

And you havent noticed any disadvantages of having them so far? (I probably install them when i come back, loading times for BF:BC2 are a bit too long for dx11 :))

EDIT: AMD releases Catalyst 10.4 Preview driver - For Battlefield: Bad Company 2 - should i go for these or 10.6?
EDIT2: - Are those preview drivers even for Mobility?

    I think you meant 8.74.

But also for those wondering these aren't even beta. They are internal testing straight from the someone's desk at ATi which is why they are so complete, comes with ATi chipset software everything.

But as Vicious noted they do work, I've been using them for a few days now and no crashes or anything.

Also since 10.3 these are the coolest, my idle temps are now 52-54 instead of 57.

For the people who have got coolers with their G73jh's: Does it make any difference?

My laptop seems cool enough on the outside, even if I hold it on my knees, but I think that's more to do with the excellent exhaust system on this one, rather than the actual temp of the internals.

Does the cooler help with the temps of the internal components and/or stability?

What about the angle of the keyboard? I guess the cooler will add another 5-10 degs.

People are reporting small decrease in their internal components temps, 2-7 degrees I think (different cooler to cooler and laptop to laptop).

And angle would be dependant on the cooler you select, as there are many coolers with many different angles.

So after I checked everything worked with my newly arrive A2, I went to reformat and install 7 ultimate. but unfortunately i grabbed the 32 bit cd in my desk and not the 64 bit, so now i have windows 32 on my g73 and when I put in the 64 cd it says the version on the cd is not compatible with my version of windows, you will need to reboot from cd. how do I do this? I tried pushing f8 at restart and that just gives me this recovery option, no advanced boot menu, then i tried going into bios and changing the boot priorities to the dvd drive first so im stuck now
    please help

It's easy to miss the chance to get the boot menu, so for me the easiest is to go into BIOS at boot, right-arrow to the far right BIOS page (the one with the exit/save stuff), and down-arrow to the boot list - select the cd/dvd drive.

No such thing. Pick & Choose is much more preferable to Waiting.

I'm proud ATi is working so hard. Thanks for the heads up guys.

    Q

    EDIT: From what I gather:

10.4a = 10.3 WHQL + BFBC2 new map load speedup (questionable as official mobility)
10.6 = ??? (so far, it said I didn't have the right version windows, redownloading from Mega, Docs Google link leads to a broken link for me)

Yes i am proud they are working very hard these days to get rid of that reputation for having horrible drivers but decent budget cards that puked on nvidia's budget ones, it is so much easier to install drivers on the g73jh than it was on the Sony sr i had with ati 4570. So what is currently the best drivers to use besides 10.4?

Ok i finally got mine! It works like a charm so far. My friend had it wiped, tested and sent over. Its all on default drivers so far, so im downloading the latest graphics drivers (the 10.6 leak or whatever).

No lag on keyboard. That works fine. Will take time to get used to it tho. But im gettting better and better by the minute. One thing tho, i touch the touchpad while typing pretty frequently. I know there was a small app that disables the pad while typing? What was it?
Also, i had the "essientials" predownloaded on my old laptop (like temp monitors and other stuff), but it is with my gf now, and she isnt due back home until next week. So i would really appreciate if anyone could point me towards a must have soft for this thing. I downloaded HWmonitor but there is no videocard readings there. Weird, or am i doing something wrong? Wrong version? Or should i just use the AMD tool or whatever was it called?

    Issues.
Sound. Its fine, but i get an error about something SRS sound device related. Wth is that? The sound is fine, i just click ok in the box, it goes away and im golden. But its a bit annoying to show off this beast to friends when there are errors jumping up. Also, i cant seem to install webcam. I tried all three drivers from asus site and no dice. Just throws up a box with an error during installation. Doesnt explain why either. Just a box, name and model of my webcam and an Ok button. Any ideas?
Also, i had a lockup yesterday. I was playing mass effect 2, my cousing came by and i wanted to show him some youtube vids, so i alt+tabbed ME2 and as the tube video was buffering the whole computer froze. I had to hard-boot it.
Nothing else since then. Runs perfect.

On the RMA page it still says

    and

Called them about it yesterday, and they said it should take 2-3 days total from the time they received it. Today is the third day.

Do you think they would ship it back to me, even unrepaired so that I could send it to NCIX.com for their RMA? Would NCIX.com take it after I had sent it to ASUS?

I need the thing back before the week of the 25th... = /.

Hmm, tried installing both the "10.6" video driver, and the latest Realtek HD Audio driver.

    Results:

    - with 10.6 boot-up time increased by several seconds (looked like Windows tried to adjust something for a while), and Furmark gave a black version of GSOD after 17 secs. BTW, no GSOD with the stock driver on my laptop

    - Realtek HD Audio installed, but I see no difference between the latest version and the stock version. After removing ALL creative apps, I can't find any reference to the subwoofer, and under "Configure" I can only select stereo speakers. (Has anyone found out how to enable subwoofer without creative?)

Overall I consider the exercise a fail and I've rolled back windows to pre-installation state

Only people that can answer that is ASUS. Call them.

As for the subwoofer, I believe the system maintains the crossover itself and thus sends anything low frequency enough (dunno where the cutoff is, since I'm betting that thing can't go below 80hz) to the "sub". I don't think you need to do anything but if you wanted to test it you can boost the bass a bit in the settings.

I've called them a few times already, and I just seem to be getting very scripted answers.

'So, is there an ETA for my notebook to be ready?'
'Well, we try for a 48-72 hour turnaround, if it's longer than that we are waiting for parts'
'Okay, very well, is it waiting for parts?'
'Well, we are trying for the 48-72 hour turnaround'
    'So, there is no ETA?'
'We are trying for the 48-72 hour turnaround'
    etc.

So, I sent my first G73 back to Newegg a month ago. It had corruption and complete system freezes with Catalyst 10.3 that I could duplicate repeatedly (within minutes) in games and Furmark. I even reinstalled Windows to see if that was the problem. But no.

Strangely if I ran it with the ASUS ATI drivers, it worked fine.

Newegg apparently tested it for 12 hours, found no problems and is sending it back to me. Oh goody. Insert expletive here. I guess I'll soon be trying Catalyst 10.4 on it and hoping for the best so I can just sell the damn thing. Or perhaps return the BB model I got in the meantime (flawless btw), taking advantage of their awesome 45day zero restocking fee policy.

Won't be buying notebooks from Newegg again. 3 weeks of waiting just to get the f-ing thing back. Hell I even put a note in the box explaining the issue with Cat 10.3.

My A1 has arrived at Asus and is at 0%. What I find is funny about the GSOD issue is that AMD says .. its not a hardware error its software ... but the next spokepersons say don't worry only a few cards are effected. Is not the fact that a few card have the issue and others not ... hmm close to the definition of an hardware or at least bios error and not software?

In the AMD forum many people have that issue also with the desktop 5870 (also more with the mobiles) and many said that in the older drivers, like the stock 9.12 the cards might be unclocked with overdrive, and that's why they are stable. The fact that many reported that increasing the voltage really helped, to me indicates the cards are just at the boarder and should have been sold as smaller 5000s. Still there is no proof for that so its still just IMHO.

BTW. AMDs conformation of GSOD issue can be sound at bit-tech.net

Can anyone give me some tip? I got my G73 last night and I did some uninstalling of bloatware and today I notice that many of the FN keys are not working when I try to use them so my LED is off and I can't turn it back on. Are there any specific programs I need to reinstall to make them work again or something?

Right now the only Asus Utilities I have are Power4Gear/Fastboot and AI Recovery. I uninstalled things like control deck.

    Just being devil's advocate here...

Why is that strange? That's the only official driver from Asus. Anything you get from ATI has a warning about using on notebooks from brands that use their own drivers.

If you're going to sell it, just put the stock driver on and be done with it! :)

Yes you need to install "ATKACPI driver and hotkey-related utilities" for the Hotkeys to work. I also think control deck is necessarry for the "Twin turbo mode" button to work together with Power4Gear. You can get the drivers/tool from either the CD or you can get the drivers online at asus.com under support.

Hey guys there seems to be a strange hotfix for the GSOD issue for catalyst 10.1. Not sure it helps with 10.3and if you guys use it please check if the cards are not just getting underclock. ITs for the HD 5800 family not sure that includes the mobile once.

The 9.12s play everything fine and if I did go ATi drivers, I only plan on definitive mobility editions (e.g. the 1.09MB launcher for 10.3 mobility that d/ls the rest of the stuff based on what notebook you're using). But, I also have a desktop 5870 so I keep track of any driver news.

I had the GSOD when only 9.12 CCC were ever installed, Asus solution was to replace the video card. Everyone take that bit of info for whatever it's worth.
The GSOD is a 5xxx series plague, not just 5870. It is nice to see they acknowledge it with a clearly stated 10.1 hotfix, now I just wish they would really figure it out and they have been known to reintroduce an issue in new driver releases.

Good job posting that Kingralph, I came across that with my GSOD research, but since it's not mobility, I'm not touching it for the G73. One would think the 10.3 WHQL mobility would include it though, but I think too many people are loading up the desktop drivers on the G73.

Found the issue. It was me, I went to msconfig and had disabled some start up and services that I thought were useless. some of them are for hotkeys so lol xD

In case you haven't seen it, this post may help you decide what's actually bloat and what you may want to keep...

Any of u ran Furmark V1.8 yet? Like the donut when it is circling, it is smooth but there is some kind of a minor skipping or lag, like .002 sec lag , it happens every 2-3 sec the entire time , like the donut pauses for a bit then circles normally again. I was wondering if u guys are having the same thing ( i dont want to call it an issue since all games are smooth and no lag).

And also the temps, I notice after 20-30 min of running furmark both on Normal mode and Xtreme mode, it just stays 93c then goes back down to 92c then 93c again then 92c. Does it mean that this gpu Threshold is 93c now? I thought it was 95c.

Heh people still do that? ;)

I often have 100+ processes running including multiple database and other servers.... with 8GB RAM on a modern multi-core CPU or multiple CPUs I'd never be able to notice they were there. Games don't care. :)
