I never used the creative drivers but I have an X-Fi in my desktop.

Bass boost is very simple. The volume of all noise under a certain frequency is increased.

However, when you install realtek's drivers instead of the stock windows 7 drivers... it vanishes =/

Thanks - I know how it works :) You answered my question, however, that it is not available with the new Realtek drivers but only with the stock Windows drivers. Since the Creative app isn't causing me any problems, I am debating whether to remove it and use the latest Realtek, as long as I can recreate the bass response I have now.

Run Furmark on it. If the GPU isn't getting stressed adequately you might not run into the GSOD. I played a full match of Supreme Commander without issue but then had it crash quickly in Serious Sam HD. Furmark shows instability fast.

You should be able to access a multi-band equalizer within the Realtek control panel. The bass boost slider is just a simplified way to tweak low frequency amplitude. With the full equalizer just increase the sliders for frequencies of 125 Hz and lower.
    looks like this
    http://img340.imageshack.us/img340/6494/realtekeq.jpg

I'm not 100% sure you can get the full EQ on the G73 but usually they give you access to it....

Yea I noticed that bass slider. I pulled all the low freqs to the top but the bass difference doesn't feel too noticeable. I wonder if the creative software puts more oomph in the bass.

Thanks guys - I'll stick with the creative app. Does the creative app stll function properly with the newest realtek drivers?

As soon as I installed 10.3B, I let Furmark run for a while and no GSOD. Using the standard 10.3 or more updated ones would cause it to crash in seconds.

So hows the overclocking going on this board? Any way to keep the CPU at max speed instead of throttling down?

I have strange issue. When i plug in my earphones some sounds are very quiet while others normal. Like, in skype, i will barely hear people talk but the system sounds will be fine (like the sound effects for hanging up or ringing). Same thing in games, in Aion for example music is normal but battle FX is barely audible. This is avoidable if i use the laptop speakers or if i dont quite push in the headphone jack all the way in. This makes me think it is somekind of surround sound thing? Where can i disable it? I have it disabled in Realtek HD manager. Any other places to look? Other drivers to install?

Okay, I have encountered my first real problem!

I was just adding a language to keyboard and languages and suddenly, my laptop screen froze completely. Wasn't just the mouse, everything. I did a hard shut down on it and restarted. I signed in just fine and things were starting up as usual, but less than 30 seconds later my screen freezes. I shut down again and do the same thing, and it still freezes as I boot up. I'm going to have two friends look at it, but has anyone experienced this or know what's going on? I bet this has been asked before, but I'm a bit exhausted to flip through countless pages.

This sounds like a Windows 7 problem. Not an Asus G73 issue. And I have set the keyboard language to Chinese and works fine here.

My RMA'd G73 should be on it's way back to me soon - I have gone back to read about the Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6200 wireless adapter.

After using the search function and going through pages and pages of posts, I was looking to find out a few things:

    1) Where is the best place to get it in Canada?

    2) I saw this on ebay.ca 'Intel Advanced-N 6200 PUMA PEAK 802.11n Half Card /5300' - what's the PUMA PEAK business?

    3) I thought I saw a step-by-step method posted on how to replace it in the G73 - does anyone have that bookmarked?

My friend had me boot up in safe mode and remove the language. It's working now. FYI, I was adding Chinese - Traditional | Taiwan and I didn't know which was the proper one so I tried different ones out. After like my 3rd or 4th try of one of the options, that's when it froze.

Well, tomorrow I'm going to be using this laptop for traveling - I'm flying from Tucson, AZ to Binghamton, NY tomorrow, and then back to Tucson on Sunday. I was almost considering not taking the laptop at all due to the shortness of the trip and the size, but I changed my mind. I don't really plan on using it at the airport though. Guess we'll see how it goes lugging this beast around.

I got my G73 back this afternoon from second RMA. Happily everything seems to be fixed, and although it seemed like forever, the work was done fairly quickly - 9 business days door to door.

I did get paperwork this time which is nice.

New motherboard and new bluetooth device were installed.

    Problems fixed:
    1) OS only recognized 4GB RAM
    2) Resuming from sleep caused fans to go to full speed with NB Probe reporting (falsely) "Fatal" CPU temp
    3) Bluetooth device not found anywhere

Nice to be back in the owners' lounge! :)

    Ok so here's some weirdness.

Brought the lappy to work 2 days ago.

Plugged it in, tried to run BC2 and it froze after 3 min.
    Did the same thing again.
Rebooted. Tried to run steam, and it froze.
Ran, dirt 2, and after about 2 seconds it froze.
Then it froze when just starting windows.

Just for the heck of it, I switched outlets and booted into safe mode. I removed the creative software because I remember that being an issue with steam and rebooted.

Machine works fine now. Ran furmark overnight and BC2 for like 4 hours.

Next day I ran crysis for about an hour working just fine.

    What could have happened?

Looks like you answered your own Question... "removed creative software because I remember that being an issue".

I didn't even bother trying to run games with the Creative software due to all the posts.

I'm thoroughly enjoying BC2, Dirt, and MW2 as well!!!

How can you enjoy MW2? The game is completely messed up with all the hackers completely destroying the game.

BC2 and GTA 4 I have played so far and are working great!

    Still working great!

Played some BFBC2 into the night on LCD TV...had to test the HDMI of course :)

Side point: WTH is up with NB Probe? Why put a checkbox for "Start NB Probe at startup" if you're just going to startup at startup anyway?

True true...I've been mostly playing BC2 now. As far as MW2; you can spot the hackers fairly easy. I just change to a different game..

Coming from a Dell M170; these games look spectacular on the G73...

Anybody try the 10.4a ATI drivers that fix map load times on BC2?

I installed it on my desktop PC with 5850 and noticed a difference. I saw on another forum that someone had installed it to their G73. Want some more confirmations...

lol, myself, I couldn't explain the mind of a software developer MarkS, but I checked out the NB Probe early on because I like monitoring apps and I did not see anything worthy to keep it on my system that other, better informative apps didn't already provide. My experience with it lasted about 5 minutes.

    I'm a software developer! I can't explain it lol.

I left it installed and it never started automatically until I actually used it when I had the fan problem before the RMA. Now it won't go away.

I know I can uninstall it but it's more fun to complain (and make fun of bad programmers) :)

So I'm looking into moving to an SSD (OCZ Vertex LE) and while I understand doing so will make harddrive access perceptibly faster. I'm also concerned if the additional cost is worth it. So my question to G73JH owners in particular is, would you recommend moving to an SSD on this machine? Aside from games I mostly run electrical design, simulation and CAD/CAM software. Appreciate the input.

Getting an SSD was the biggest mistake I've ever made. Now I'm never going to be able to buy a spinner HDD again so every future HDD purchase is going to cost me. :)

They're quiet, fast, and use very little power. And they're expensive!

Only you can decide if the price for the speed is worth it to you. If the software you use often is disk-use-intensive, then you'll definitely like a SSD.

You could hold off a year and prices will drop, although you never know how much.

    Hi!

After months of waiting and following the forum threads of the G73, my very own unit just arrived at my door just moments ago :D

I plan to burn the Windows recovery disks and reinstall the OS clean. Just a quick question. When the recovery disks are burned, the disks just contain the Windows 7 home Premium OS and does not contain anything else correct? So, once I complete burning the recovery disks, I can use them to re-install a clean OS? ..and than load the selected Asus software from the included drivers disk?

Wonder also if I should risk it and download the latest Mobile Cat drivers(10.3 or 10.3b or 10.4), and use Furmark to test out my GPU after..

    Thanks.

Hey guys. Looks like I am getting my A1 back soon. I hope I can get it back on Monday from Fedex.
I had 2 dead pixel and the grey screen of death issue with my A1. In part thanks to the great help of my retailer portableone.com Asus exchanged even the LCD also it were only dead pixels :D and in a reasonable 7d including a weekend.

As Quagmire LXIX has said it already when his G73 went RMA, take it as you want but Asus replaced my GPU because it was defect based on their own testing. I can only recommend people here to read the GSOD thread in the ATI forum to decide to go RMA or not.
    http://forums.amd.com/game/messagev...PAGE=95&FTVAR_FORUMVIEWTMP=Linear&#lastunread
I will test if my GPU now will runs stable with Furmark and 10.3 drivers but my friends G73 (X1) now runs stable with 10.3 after Asus replaced the GPU.

    @Quagmire LXIX
big thanks again for your youtube video of the GSOD. The video help during my RMA as the Asus guys were first looking for a normal crash or BSOD.

I was really impressed that the G73 did as well as it did, I was expecting stuttering and what not.

For those who haven't tried it, when you use the wireframe, you can see that the ENTIRE scene is tessellated. It's not just the Giant, all the rocks, the surrounding side, the bugs. At one point right at the beginning, your screen is almost completely red. It's really cool.

But I can game without tessellation and probably not notice that much difference. I guess I'm not that hardcore into eye candy, I just look good FPS.

I'm pretty sure the disks make a mirror image of your hard drive's current state, drivers and all. That's why some people burn the disk imidiately after opening and then again once the G73 is set up to their desire.

BTW, I just figured out what that little cloth is for that ASUS packages with the G73....it's to wipe the dust off your desktop since you'll never use it again!!!

lol, I do believe it's a cloth to wipe you beautiful 17" screen :) I know you're just making a joke though.

    He's also correct mobilezila.

Indeed it did do well. I read a comment on another site where he said it killed his desktop running 14FPS, so I wasn't sure what to expect. I agree, so far for me tessellation has just been benchmark eyecandy. I still haven't seen a clear cut example in the games (but I don't have Metro 2033 yet). It sure doesn't look like it does anything in the Dirt 2 game water like it shows in it's water demo.

Anyway, when tessellation really makes it into games, I think it's going to be the best thing since something like Ambient Occlusion for realism.

Driver Updating TIP: I figure I would pass on a good tip for those updating VGA drivers that I gave to another user by PM. evensen turned me on to a free image backup tool called Macrium Reflect (it reminds me of the wonderful Ghost 9 and XP days for ease of use).
It is much simpler to create an image of your C: drive (make sure you create the recovery CD it asks you to) to another drive before you update drivers. This way if your update fubars or causes problems, it is much easier and 100% thorough to restore the easily created image instead of trying to clean out the drivers to go back a version or so.

I've had my g73 for a few weeks now and have been using razer megladon for gaming. I decided to listen to some music via the stock speakers and i can't detect any bass at all. Tried fooling with the creative equalizer but not much help. Is there something i'm missing here? Is there some special way to turn the bass boost on.

Glad it helped bud. I know some people are reporting going back to 9.12s stopped the GSODs, but I never went anywhere from the 9.12s. Asus agreed it was the GPU and as I would of figured, it's likely on their tech board by now.

ATi needs to get this one pinned down imo.

Yessir, I tried them out his morning. They definitely reduce load times by about... 99% lol. Seriously though it went from between 45secs-1.5min loading time down to about 10 seconds.

Only reason I went back was because I felt dirty with my modded inf drivers. I read that the official mobility drivers will be out by the end of the month so might as well endure a few more days of ty loading times. Gives me an excuse to ALT+Ent out of games for a minute to check out what I missed :). (ALT+Ent since it's about the only reliable way to get out of the game for a sec [windowed mode]). On that note, time to start up BFBC2Game.exe :D

Yeah I was bored at work and needed something to do, mehh screw it, I'll waste another 20 minutes taking them off and restarting about 3 times lol. I honestly don't mind the loading times too much, I usually to a quick check of websites like these and send off an msn message before putting BC2 back to full screen.

Hey corpfan, I'm glad to see that your lappy is still doing fine and you have not needed to RMA it overseas :). As for the 6200, very, very simple. Remove the back panel, take the 2 antennas off, remove the two screws on the card, then remove it as you would a ram stick. Simply do the opposite instructions with the new 6200.

I have already done this and it works fine. I installed the same drivers as described in this post http://forum.notebookreview.com/showpost.php?p=6178871&postcount=8.

Also, once it is installed, I suggest this change to allow the 300mbps:

-Right-click on the wireless icon in the bottom right
    -Open Network and Sharing Center
    -Change adapter settings (upper-left)
    -Right-click on Wireless Network Connection
    -Click Properties
    -Click Configure (upper-right button)
    -Click on the Advanced tab
-Ensure that the fist two entries (802.11n Channel Width for band 2.4/5.2 is set to auto and not 20mhz

    Enjoy :)

EDIT: I had some trouble at first with connection speeds, yet it was simply because one of the antennas was not on properly.

Way past that point...it has been installed and reinstalled several times. It isn't working.

Downloaded newest and 2nd newest drivers, but nothing working.

When I "TROUBLESHOOT", it says that there must be a problem with the drivers... but, I have the latest installed 13.1.1.1

Not finding any connections - nothing is happening.

It is listed in Device Manager, and it says working properly, etc... Have tried just about everything. I am wondering if this card is a fake (ordered from Ebay via HK).

I put in a complaint to the seller and to Ebay.

Not sure why it won't work otherwise? The Atheros card works instantly when reinstalled.

I finally got my G73 A1 this week. I guess I got a lemon. When playing a game either the screen goes blank or I get blue/gray vertical bars. Either way I have to cycle the power. This is with the latest Cat 10.3. It happens pretty fast. The last two times it happened while typing my account info for WOW. I guess its an RMA.

Edit: Gray bars look just like Quagmires Youtube video. I swear I'm also seeing a random flicker.

    Hi,

I just received my G73 yesterday too and I am not sure if mine has issues.

To test out my graphics card, I downloaded Furmark 1.8.2 and ran it. I checked the 'Test Stability" option. Within 3 mins, my screen turns totally black/blank, and the system hangs. I have to do a hard shut down. :(

Secondly, compared to my almost 5 year old Dell Inspiron E1705 with a Nvidia Go7600 GPU, upon power up and just running, it is not as 'silent' as my old laptop. I have read countless postings where owners say they virtually cannot hear the blowing of the fans. I can hear my fans from the other end of my room. The noticable fan blowing sound is present when just idle  I guess that's fine if its normal.

I would appreciate it if someone could comment and let me know if my symptoms are normal for a brand new G73JH. Everything is run default, factory settings and stock drivers. I have not installed any software other than Furmark, and have not changed my GPU drivers.

    Thank you very much.

    mobilezila,
It's very quiet to me. Quieter than my desktop, but also louder than my Dell laptop. It's just amazingly quiet for the power. The old Dell can't play games.

Play a game. I haven't tried futuremark. I just start a game and within a few minutes I either get the blank screen or the gray bars.

There have been a number of forum members who have had issues with running the GPU using drivers other than the stock ones. Maybe you could roll back your graphic drivers to the stock one on the drivers disk and not use the Cat 10.3. Your system may not GSOD with the stock drivers.

I wanted to test my new laptop with everything 'fresh' from factory, so I never updated my GPU drivers yet. Unfortunately, upon running the Furmark version 1.8.2 program for about 3 mins, I get the black/blank screen hang...

I am also not sure why the Intel 6200 wireless adapter refuses to connect above 150mbps. I have followed the instructions, and changed the adatper settings to "auto" from 20mHz. My router is the D-Link extreme N 655, and I have connected with my older machines at 300mBps.

I am a little disappointed, but am hoping a RMA might fix my issues.

Ok, I think it's confirmed that I will have to RMA my unit. I just tried running Furmark again, and within 4 mins, my screen flickered and than I got the GSOD. After the GSOD happened, the screen went totally blank :( The first time it happened, Furmark ran for about 3 mins before my screen went blank, but no GSOD. In all instances, I had to hard shutdown and reboot.

I ran Furmark using the "Stability Test" feature, and at full screen 1920 x 1080.

I have not done any software upgrades whatsoever. My video drivers are stock. The only thing I did when I received my laptop yesterday was to burn the recovery disks.

    What do you guys think?
