Sorry to hear that mobilezila but if furmark is not stable even with stock drivers I guess you should rma it. I know how that feels I have been there. But again this is not Asus fault and it is not specific to the G73. I cannot understand how AMD could acknowledge the problem as being in driver issue that only effects some cards back in January and everything someone send it in even AMD itself replaces the units as defective.
This is really bad business from AMD/ATI and now all the manufacters who buy their products like asus and their customers suffer.
You might want to try the 10.4a driver though. Btw. my tip if you have to RMA it, try to get help from your retailer. My retailer was a big help getting my G73 back in 4-5 work days. Also make REALLY sure that you explain them the issue correctly. The first RMA guy from asus just wrote "system crashes" in the RMA notes and they could not find normal system crashes until I called and gave them the youtube link of the GSOD and made sure they need to test the GPU.

Once the status window is up, it refreshes itself periodically, so you can walk around and see connection speeds at different proximities. -
1. Power management is off (or at maximum performance)
2. Superfetch off.
3. Using Intel 9.6 AHCI.
4. Partition alignment 1024K
5. I left it to idle for a day after large file copies/delete.
I haven't figured out what to do next. You guys have any input(s)? Appreciate it. -
I would also like to add that using the 10.4a drivers, I am always either tied, or the first to load in the game. -
RoninTech, my temps from the Furmark screen were around 94-95 whenever my laptop hangs.
One thing though, I did notice my screen all turn grey once only(GSOD), but the rest of the times, my entire screen turns the color of bergundy with vertical strips across the whole screen. This occurs sometimes within 3-5mins of running Furmark but sometimes it occurs about 9-10mins through.
As I stated, all I did with the unit when I received it was to burn the recovery disks. I did not update any graphics drivers at all.
I guess, reading from your replies, I should call in to RMA it? Do I inform the Asus rep that running Furmark causes it?
I actually live within 15mins of the Asus facility in Fremont..maybe I should just go up to their front door and speak to them about it
Kingralph, I was considering trying some of the drivers out there..10.3, 10.4...but I figured that if this occurs even when I am using everything stock, than, there truly must be an issue wth my card.
Oh well.....I still welcome any other thoughts. But thanks for sharing your comments so far.

Just saw this model for the first time at Best Buy (Canada). Loved everything about it (especially the rubberized feel) but the screen in the retail version was 1600x900 and I didn't care for the limited angle of the screen. Still considering it though...

Thanks for your reply Quagmire. I know this sounds weird but I do feel re-assured about my decision to RMA my unit based upon your feedback. I have followed your experiences all the way from near the beginning of this thread in February.
My laptop is so new that I have not even registered it's warranty as I received it only last evening. Guess I will register it than make the RMA call on Monday morning.

Actually, I think I have decided to send it back to my reseller instead, and get a replacement G73 from them when new stock arrives since my GPU for the current arrived "DOA". "DOA" in this case because it suffers from the GSOD with everything stock. Guess they did not catch this because it is only evident once you run an intensive program like Furmark. This was one of the main reasons why I decided to stick with a reseller since they also give a 15 day grace period to test out your purchases and great customer service.
I have heard enough stories about RMA experiences, and I would rather get purchase support from my reseller than to deal with Asus for now.

Good luck and wish you a quick turn around on this ordeal.

Well, I have not uploaded a youtube video before, but if anyone's interested in what happens when I try to run Furmark, you can observe how it crashes and hangs my system by clicking the video link I am attempting to place here:

Well, I'm officially the proud new owner of a G73 A1. It arrived on Friday and I only got it set up late on Saturday. But so far, I'm pretty impressed. I love the mouse that came with it too.
I was lucky to get my order in to PC Canada before the big rush started. I think my wait was about 3 weeks. I'm very happy that it came much faster than I was expecting. -
The 8.74 drivers works fine but i have a problem is that. When i try to uninstall the driver ,it will become a black screen and i have to hold the power button for 5 seconds to turn off.
Is it normal?? -
I get bluish/gray or blank/bblack.

Hi Guys,
I'm new here, but i've been hovering around reading the messages about the Asus G73JH-A1 which I own. I have a question for you guys here:
This is quite embarrassing. Last night I played AVATAR on BLU RAY DISC with Cyberlink Power DVD Ultra 10 version 1516.51
Now I didn't know there was an update for Cyberlink to play AVATAR - BUT it DID play on my computer. Right now im downloading an update from Cyberlink that says "Added ability to play AVATAR", so im downloading it now.
Now the strange thing is, after playing AVATAR, NONE of my blu ray movies will play now including AVATAR. I downloaded the windows troubleshooter for BD-DVD drives and it encountered an error stating my drive cannot play BLU RAY MEDIA. It plays other media fine (DVD, CD's)
So my question is, Could AVATAR have borked my Blu ray player?
Does anyone know of a firmware update for my drive? I did try looking on the net, but google seemed to have found none, and the ones it did find are in a different language.
My BLU RAY Drive is:
HL - DT - ST BDDVDRW CT21N (Which I found to be an LG model)
OS:
Win 7 64bit
Asus G73JH-1
cORE i7 720
8gb ram
would really hope to not have to send this laptop in for repairs - it would take probably 1 -2 months to get it back.
I tried googling the firmware driver but it appears this blu ray drive seems way too new for a driver or firmware. Has anyone else encountered this problem or have a possible solution? -
Ray the creator of Tray Tools always posts his latest versions here:
http://cid-a50350ea7a969f0c.skydrive.live.com/self.aspx/Public/attsetup.exe
When you install ATT, you need to go through the install setup slowly. Make sure you disable Overclock and disable Overdrive. If you don't do this, you will have immediate BSOD every time ATT loads.
Now that you have ATT installed and working awesome, reason why I did it, I want Flip Queue Size. This is what controls how many frames your GPU queues up. This is the same as Pre-Rendered Frames in Nvidia which is awesome. Set it to 3 and your BC2 mouse should be a little better.
Have fun -
Quagmire LXIX Have Laptop, Will Travel!
Don't go hunting down firmware and bork your hardware.
Try installing the Avatar patch after d/l, if that does not fix it. Take a good uninstaller like revouninstaller and do an "Advanced" uninstall to really clean the Cyberlink out. If you're not comfortable using revouninstaller, just use the Windows uninstaller.
Then reinstall Cyberlink and apply the Avatar patch. Should get you squared away.
Q -
Hi Quadmire, I will try that out. I did download the patch and installed it and it still does the same thing. I will uninstall Cyberlink first though with revouninstaller (since my cyberlink is a legit copy I downloaded directly from cyberlink). But the question is, if Cyberlink or Avatar didn't bork my blu ray drive, what did? Could I have possibly got a bad blu ray diode on my blu ray drive? That was the last thing (watch Avatar) I did with this laptop before I found out blu ray doesnt work.
I seem to have misplaced my driver CD for my G73JH-A1 ( I know I didnt throw it out). Could anyone with the driver cd possibly send me the firmware/driver for my blu ray drive? That would be a big help. -

Are the speakers Altec Lansing ones? How's the audio quality? thanks

Quagmire LXIX Have Laptop, Will Travel!
You will not find firmware on the driver disc and there are no special drivers for the drive that windows doesn't have. Imo it is the software, a HDCP compliant issue or broken hardware.
First, take steps to make sure it's not the software (likely, reinstall) and/or HDCP compliance issue, use something like WinDVD Advisor which can specify what part of the HDCP DRM isn't compliant.
and it's Qua gmire
Q -
Hey, sorry about that, did really mean to say Quagmire
Well I did want t mention I was using the "old" Power DVD 10.0.1516 driver when I did watch avatar. It did play. Then I went to watch something else on Blu Ray and it didn't play. I started searching online and went to Cyberlink first, it did mention there was an update from 10.0.1516 to 1.0.1601. The update mentioned it adds the ability to play Avatar.
After reading your post I installed revouninstaller, uninstalled Power DVD10. Restarted. Installed Power DVD10, the applied the patch. I tried the movie again, and it's still not working.
I also installed the cyberlink BD advisor and everything didn't check out. It mentioend my ATI software was not up to date, so I installed the latest update. After that I re-did the BD advisor check and everything passed with flying colors. The strange thing is, it detects my drive as Blu-Ray capable (as it should). After doing the test, it still doesnt play blu rays (not that it would have, since it's just a test).
I did dowload the WinDVD BD Advisor tool and it mentions my "VGA CHIPSET" driver may be out of date, even though I updated it last night to the latest Mobility driver.
Also it seems to think my QuadCore I7 is weak or something which I know it is not (When I used to play Blu rays the processor USage never went about 10%).
It does mention my BlU raydrive IS in fact a blu ray drive.
Do you think I may have to do a system recovery? I
ve already created the DVD disks (6 in total).
Or any other suggestions?
Thanks -
Haha.
Well, if you want to see the GSOD in the more "traditional" color, I have uploaded another short youtube video here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lhljt4O1IJc
Just fast forward to 1.12min into the video to see the video card crashing.
I know that most people who suffer from GSOD's find that when reverting back to stock drivers(and not using the updated ones) will make the system 'fine' again, but since my system does not even function normally when fresh from Asus and all stock, something must be wrong.
On the other hand, if I was one of the others who's system crashes if they try to update to the latest manufacturer drivers, I would also feel very unhappy because for something I paid good $$ for, it should work out-of-the-box since most others report that their machines work fine with the updated drivers. I seriously hope ATI gets a better grip on their parts manufacuring process. That's why, as stated, I only chose to purchase my unit from a reseller and not a retailer like new-egg. I have read too many issues with this laptop and needed the support and return policies of a reputable resellar.
As you can see, I can replicate my GSOD every time. I have already written to my reseller to request for a return and replacement unit. I know its over the weekend now, but hopefully they reply soon tomorrow.

Wow man, you are hard to follow, kinda all over the place
If you don't have a lot of time invested in your OS, then starting over and taking steps slowly would be a way to go. You could also use the F9 at boot restore (Hidden Partition, look at your instruction booklet to see what I'm talking about) if your 6 discs were made after you first turned on on.
If you reinstall to factory, update Windows, install Cyberlink and apply any updates, and it still doesn't play BD, then you can figure it's a hardware failure.
Q -
Here's a weird issue...if I mute the laptop's internal speakers...it only mutes the left side.
How's that for odd? -
Alright, did the system restore. Installed cyberlink player and did the upgraed. Still no go for my blu ray drive. I guess I will send it in for repairs! Sigh that was that last thing I wanted to do.
-
Quagmire LXIX Have Laptop, Will Travel!
Bummer, you might want to call your reseller and see if you can just send your drive for them to test. You may be able to keep your G73 and they'll ship you a new drive. Worth a shot.

OHHH NOOOO! Almost one month of smooth operation and now my G73 gives me a good scare.
I pressed the power button to turn it on and 2 seconds after I hear the hard drive spin up and the keyboard lights turn on, I then hear the hard drive click/snap and come to a stop and the keyboard lights go out. Then 2 seonds later, the hard drive spools up again, the keyboad lights come back on and it sounds like it's booting up. However, the screen has remained black the entire time! I wait about 2 minutes to ensure it's all booted up and then press Fn+F2, and sure enough the wireless light goes out. So, I know it has booted up, and the screen is just black.
I closed the lid, waited a minute for it to hibernate, then opened the lid and the screen now works. There's an error on a black screen, "Windows Resume Loader, Your system's memory configuration has changed since it entered hibernation...press ENTER to delete restoration data and proceed to system boot menu."
I press enter to resume and I got it to boot to windows (my desktop icons have moved around?). The only thing I changed before I shut it down was to uninstall ASUS FancyStart and Control Deck. When I used Revo Uninstaller for the Control Deck, Revo asked me to confirm the deletion of a Control Deck registry entry.
If I have this problem again I'll reinstall Control Deck from the driver disk. I don't know what else could have caused this other than my hard drive is about to go.
EDIT: Uninstalling Control Deck gave me the warning, not FancyStart. -

So, I got my G73JH back from ASUS on Friday - because of exams today is the first day I've gotten a chance to really use it again (other than just turning it on to check for PSOD on Friday).
What I found was really disappointing - it looks like they replaced the screen and failed to put the screen back on properly. Pictures are below - any idea if I can fix it, or if I should send it back again? Or other advice...?
-
Quagmire LXIX Have Laptop, Will Travel!
Does it feel like it can snap in tail? In all fairness, my tech wasn't perfect as they left the front lip not completely snapped in to where I can see inside the 4 front indicator lights. I think they did the same to MarkS, but it snapped in place for me. I would just be a little more weary/careful since it's your screen.

My mistake, when I unistalled Control Deck, not FancyStart, is when I got the warning from Revo about the registry change. -

Guys, if I sell my 2nd HDD, and then later I have some issue with the laptop and I have to return it/send it to the warranty, will they accept it with one HDD even though the issue would be somewhere else?
As I put SSD on mine, i have no use for other HDD (no need for external storage for me), so im planning on selling it for ~100$ (good price?), and wondering if my warranty wont suffer
thanks -
If that isn't the issue, I would strongly consider sending it back to Asus, rather than try more of the disassembling of the LCD panel, just because they screwed it up. (Even if you do fix it, I would still call them up to complain)
Good Luck.. -
The damage must have occurred during the return shipment because I can't imagine them returning a product to a customer after they shattered the lcd. After looking through some of these threads I'm not really sure about that anymore, though. Makes me a little afraid for ordering myself a G73 in case anything goes wrong with it. -

Hi,
I am living in Turkey and thanks to my friend in USA, he purchased a G73 x05 for me. I ve been reading some reviews and realized that there exists a problem regarding the gpu (heard smt like grey screen of that and some other freeze problems). I won't be able to send it back after my friend comes here, any suggestions to test if the problem exists in the notebook? I will be reading the posts, I am sure the issue has discussed before but 400 pages are a little bit too much to read in short time, I would be glad if you inform me regarding that freeze, gpu problem or w/e it is.Thanks.

My advice would be to enjoy the laptop when you receive it, and more than likely you won't have any problems. I received my G73Jh within the last couple of weeks, and I haven't experienced any of the issues that have been mentioned in these forum threads, (yet). However, should you require service for your Asus laptop, you're in luck, in that there are Asus Service Centers in both Istanbul and Ankara. From the ASUS Notebook/Eee PC Global Service Center webpage your in country service center locations are;

Hey guys
Seriously thinking about shipping one of these from the US to the UK from excaliburPC and wanted to here any feedback from using this company/website.
Shipping via them makes it a lot cheaper than buying one from the UK even including customs charges.
If anyone else in the UK has shipped one from the US could you inform me how that went? and what the price worked out as. thatd be good.
Thanks! -

I have used asus services in a few asian countries while i was moving around a lot and have never had a problem, it does takes longer then in the united states but I think with the right communication and effort you should be fine should anything happen.
good luck! -
Wasn't me, but I remember seeing the post
Got scared yesterday morning...after browsing emails I took a break for breakfast. Out of the corner of my eye I saw my G73 display turn off, then the keyboard lights, then all the other lights - panic. Turned out I hadn't plugged it in yet so it just hibernated LMAO.
Anyway, no problems with my G73 since getting back from last repair (except it doesn't plug itself in). I haven't booted my desktop since I got this notebook back -
Quagmire LXIX Have Laptop, Will Travel!
lol, we shouldn't live in fear of our G73, but it is acceptable for those that have been burned. How long do you feel smooth running should last before any fear is dropped?
Q -
Ok, I am pretty happy how the GPU DOA issue was resolved by my reseller, PNB. I am sure if I had purchased through Newegg, it would have been another story.
Anyhow, I guess the only downside to this whole ordeal is having to wait another couple of weeks for a replacement unit from Asus.... But I am happier this way still as I don't think I could have lived with a sub-peforming laptop which I paid good $$ for.
I tip my hat to all who have similarly been burned, and had to send their units in to Asus for an RMA. I think this lesson in waiting(From pre-order wait to RMA turn-around wait) does teach one to develop a sense of great patience. -
So guys, Quick question... does the stock N adapter support 5GHZ?
If not (now i already own the G73JH) what are my options to upgrade to 5GHZ?
