There are one of 2 mice that come with it, the Abyssus and the rebranded HP Voodoo. The Abyssus is left-hand friendly, the Voodoo is not. Considering most of the new G73JHs come with the voodoo...

I just thought I'd add an "I love my G73" post to the thread. I just picked up an A1 two days ago, and did a clean install of Windows 7 on it to clear out all the bloatware. After various other setups and installs, I installed the leaked 10.6 video drivers and played a couple hours of BFBC2. It ran nice and smoothly, and I had none of the GSOD problems that people had been mentioning.

I also checked to see, and I have the 8 gigs of 1333 RAM and the Hannstar monitor in mine, so I'm pretty happy. I've never owned a gaming laptop before, and this seems like the perfect one for my first purchase. :)

Here's the guide that I followed and worked well for me. I had to use the link within it to make a Windows 7 DVD, as my G73 didn't come with a recovery disk. I also made a set of AI Recovery disks before I did the clean install, just in case.

Out of curiosity, as I'm a big flightsim fan: has someone here already tried out FSX on the G73JH? That would probably one of the first things I'd do when I get a hand on that machine: migrating my FSX

Any experience shared in that matter would be highly appreciated.

This is a question I've been attempting to hunt down an answer for, that has been extremely frustrating to find any info on, so I'm hoping some of you owners might have some insight.

I recently purchased a Asus G73jh - I'd like to use an internal mobile broadband solution. Since there's only one PCIe slot internally, that makes an Intel Wifi + WiMax card a good solution, especially since it only needs the two antenna that are already in the system to operate. The biggest if factor comes from whether the manufacturer was a cheap and cut off the USB data transmit lines on the PCIe slot. Like Dell does. Like Dell does, alot, every chance it can get away with, to be cheapskates.

I obtained a Intel 6250 card knowing that it might or might not work for this very reason, as it doesn't in some of the Asus Eee notebooks. After installing the needed drivers for Win7 for the Wifi and the WiMax, the devices all show up in Device Manager, with:

    Intel(R) Centrino(R) WiMAX adapters > Intel(R) Centrino(R) WiMAX 6250 Function Driver
    Network adapters > Intel(R) Centrino(R) WiMAX 6250
    Network adapters > Intel(R) Centrino(R) Advanced-N 6250 AGN

The items for the card appear to be there, including the components that should be running from the USB data connection, which are the Function Driver and the WiMAX network adapter. They show as devices extending from the USB tree when sorted by connections, no errors or anything unsual.

But the connection utility for the WiMAX software won't recognize that they're installed - only showing a 'WiMAX is not ready.' message. This is pretty much what anyone gets on any system without proper USB pin support on the motherboard, but nobody has documented whether the devices stop showing in Device Manager if the USB pin support is not present, and nobody has mentioned whether the G73jh has the USB pin support on it's PCIe slot.

Installing the card into a system with known-functional USB pins on the PCIe slot had it work without issue, so I'm pretty certain the answer here is that Asus cheaped out on the PCIe slot. It seems so strange that the devices show as working fine under the USB tree though. Anyone else have any information on this?

Also the 8.74 Leaked 10.5/10.6 work better for me. Can find that at Strags or Guru3D or Rage3D.

Thanks, I just ordered the Wagan 2295-6 inverter which is rated at a continuous 210 watt supply and 500 watt peak power. I read a review on legitreviews where they tested the power draw with load and it was 122 watts max consumption with no battery. They claim that the system consumes an extra 33W with the battery charging. Battery and idle: Idle with no battery 53W , Idle with battery 86W.

    Hi,

I went to the link within the guide to try to download the 3 files for the "Windows 7 x64 All versions English" but the middle link to the file "setup1.box" seems not to be working. When did you try to create your OS recovery disk? I am assuming the link does not work anymore. If that's the case, how are others managing to create their Windows 7 recovery disks for a clean re-install?

Warcraft 3 does not have widescreen support natively which explains the black spaces on the left and right sides. You may have to hack the game, but...it won't look natural as the game was not designed that way.

Check out starcraft 2 if you have the opportunity, that game has widescreen support and will display correctly. (pst, pre order from gamestop or amazon and receive a beta key)

I believe what we do wrong is not making ATI/AMD aware that the GSOD issue still does exit with the mobile cards. From what I read it seems for the desktop cards there have been bios updates and patches. Btw. On geeks3d ( http://www.geeks3d.com/20100208/tips-what-is-the-gsod/) they say the issue is related to the DDR5 memory. Anyway my point is I will email AMD customer service as I believe they need to look into this again.

Try doing a clean install before you put the blame on Asus/ATI. The first thing that I did was wipe the laptop and install the 10.3s. Everything has been running flawless, and I just moved up the leaked 10.6s and they work even better.

I can't imagine you will ever want to stay on the Asus drivers for the entirety of your laptop's life. Use the windows backup utility to create a system image of you os partition, and then do a clean install. If it doesn't work then recover your backup or RMA your laptop.

Yeah, the cooling system is really efficient and does not need an additional cooler. You might just end up reducing the average GPU temp by 5 degrees or less using a cooler. Upgrading the BIOS is not advisable unless you're having several issues related to the BIOS. There were reports that upgrading to the latest BIOS somehow caused the keyboard lighting to die. You can upgrade the GPU drivers since there are several performance benefits from the newly released ones.

Don't upgrade bios unless you have a problem you are certain the update will fix.

Not all games will stress the GPU. For example, I played a 30 min game of Supreme Commander and had no problems but then played 5 minutes of Serious Sam HD and it started flickering and locked up.

Furmark will stress the GPU more effectively than just about any other piece of software and that is its value. It's the Prime95 of the GPU world. You can be pretty sure that if Furmark causes the GPU to mess up and freeze your whole system with a screen of pretty colors that your GPU has issues.

It's not solved on the desktop either. I have posted about the issue on the Beyond3D forum. There are a number of hardware people there, including a Radeon product manager. There are also AMD people that have been in contact with HardOCP readers. Tom's Hardware did an article about it as well. There's no doubt that AMD is fully aware of the issue, they just can't seem to nail it down.

I too have read that it is related to GDDR5. I could very well be some sort of quality problem with the RAM suppliers.

Don't count on a software fix. If you are having problems with display corruption and freezes in 3D apps, I'd get a replacement notebook as that's almost certainly a hardware defect. AMD has put out several drivers that were supposed to improve the issue but clearly there are still problems. The thing is, not everyone has problems, so I definitely believe that some of these boards are simply defective in some way.

The resolution of Warcraft 3 can be changed in Regedit.

    Just go:
    Menu start
    Run
    regedit
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Blizzard Entertainment\Warcraft III\Video

double click in "reswidth", select decimal and type your resoltion (1920)
then double click in "resheight", select decimal and type your resoltion (1080).

I tested in my g73 to play war3/dota. You will see how beautiful War3 will run!!!

If it's a hardware defect, then why is it that the older 9.12 drivers are problem free for a lot of people (myself included)?

This random static/crackling noise issue is really starting to me off. I'm getting it with the latest Realtek HD audio drivers on Realtek's website. If I use the drivers from ASUS's website, I get the issue where muting the sound only mutes one side (and muffles the other) which I've previously posted about here before. I was told then that when that happens, it's a symptom of using the wrong drivers.

First of all they do not solve(d) the problem for all like myself. Second of all ever noticed the difference in performance between the 9.12 and 10.3 or 10.4? I wonder why people reporting windows list the 5870M with 9.12 in its index as 6.0 and the 10.3 or 10.4 as 7.2? Beside all the rumors my first GPU was replaced as defective take it as you want. There is not question that drivers and bios settings can help even with hardware issues and if it is a problem with the GDDR5 memory (IF) drivers have ways to work around things. If that may end up costing performance is a different question. I can understand people not wanting to take that risk witha gamin laptop never knowing if they will ever be able to update their catalyst drivers (if RMA is not a risk itself ;)).
The fact however that is effects the GPU when it gets stressed by so many different software and that as you said some people's GPUs are fine, other only work with 9.12 and other give GSOD all the time is really difficult to explain with driver issues, especially if people make a clean install with only the GPU drivers.
I wonder if you could test if your GPU would run fine with 10.4 if you uderclock the 5870M a bit? Its just to many people having that issue in IMHO.
