The fps is between 4x - 7x, depending on how complex is the rendering of your current screen. Effects like missiles shooting and explosions happen together will make the fps drop to 1x for that particular moment.

Thanks! I take it it's more than playable. I expected it to run quicker than MW2 and about as fast as CS:Source, but I've seen people post similar numbers for MW2, maybe a little slower.

    Thanks for the infos ;)

Well I have a home server for all my data, and I'll take the 500 GB HDD out of the laptop and put it into an external USB case :) My laptop is only for school purpose, so no games, only OS and Office :)

Does anyone use this as a Media Center? I need to know what digital-out options are available on this machine, and if it can output multi-channel sound like AC3.

For what do you need the G210m then? Wouldn't in that case the UL30A be sufficient and cheaper?

I wanted the dedicated GPU for watching HD content sometimes on my TV ( via the HDMI port ) and to have the ability to switch between the GPUs if it's needed for a task ( encoding with CUDA for exemple ).

FYI, HD encoding/decoding has more to do with your CPU rather than the GPU.

That doesn't make sense. What would the point of a dedicated GPU be then.

As far as I understand it. The CPU does it all if there isn't a GPU, but it isn't able to handle as much because it also does other things. That is the reason for a dedicated GPU; it takes the load off of your CPU.

Why is multi-core rendering disabled. Wouldn't it increase performance if it was enabled since the processor has 2 cores.

Not to be a downer, but most webcam automated login systems are highly insecure. They can usually be fooled by photos of you and often times they only have a 80% accuracy ratio to begin with (ie 1 out of 5 people will be recognized as you). If you have a strong password, don't use the webcam login.

Then I believe you've been misinformed. Unless certain video playback programs support hardware acceleration, the CPU does all the work. However, even when there is a GPU, often times enabling hardware acceleration to offset the load to the GPU will cause stuttering if the GPU ia fairly weak.

You don't need dedicated GPU to accelerate HD videos. The 4500MHD does it great. It would be useful for CUDA though. And honestly $100 more isn't a bad price to pay for the benefits of dedicated graphics (CPU offload, video encoding, video games, autoCAD)

Actually the Intel 4500MHD has built-in hardware decoder for H.264 streams all the way up to 1080p HD. For playback of H.264 encoded media, both the built-in Intel graphics and the Nvidia discrete graphics do most of the hard work, and the CPU utilization remains comparably low. The Nvidia discrete GPU does use more power than the Intel - about 2 watts or so more, according to my tests.

However I tend to use the Nvidia for playback of bluray sourced media on the built-in screen as the Nvidia dynamic contrast enhancement for video functions work better than Intel's rather basic video adjustments. This is only needed because the built-in screen has absolutely awful contrast  - one of the worst of any recent notebooks - which makes lower lit video scenes dull and lifeless. The dynamic contrast enhancement does help to liven things up a bit.

"The dynamic contrast enhancement does help to liven things up a bit." tinkerguy wrote

I always recommend that people go into the nVidia CP and turn on the Dynamic Contrast and the Color Enhancement, both, for HD playback. The LCD is a weak link in our laptops if they have one at all, and this helps things out a lot. :)

I also never use the Integrated graphics for viewing HD content of any sort because of the limitations of the LCD, only, not the graphics accelerator which you mentioned...that works fine, it's the LCD's lack of resolution that makes things muddy-looking contrast-wise.

I don't know whether this method has been posted before.
Just share this method I read from a Taiwan forum. I followed the steps and successfully installed the driver (Win7 x64).

To install the latest Nvidia Driver (The latest one: 197.16, released on 29Mar):

    Things to prepared:

    From ASUS website:
VGA Patch V1.0.0.1, original VGA driver (V8.15.11.8688), BIOS 210

    From Nvidia driver download page:
The latest driver (currently it is 197.16)

    Steps:
    1.Update the BIOS to 210

2.Uninstall all the Nvidia Drivers and Display Control Panel

    3.Install the VGA Patch V1.0.0.1

4.Unzip the original VGA driver (V8.15.11.8688).

5.Unzip also the latest Nvidia driver, copy all the files to the "Display" folder in the location where the original VGA driver (V8.15.11.8688) is unzipped.

    6. Install the modified driver.

(Credits should be given to the author of the original post in that forum.)

    I didn't say I used it 100% of the time... ;)

I am quite aware of the reservations of the Smart Logon program in terms of identity recognition. I use it mostly around my office or at home, never when traveling, and never when there's any question of a real security risk. :)

Thanks for the thought though, it's appreciated!

All you need is a memory stick duo adapter like this:

You don't need to get an external memory card reader.

Hey guys just went into the bios to take a look and saw the Asus Easy Overclock.
I am curious. Whats the difference between the default 3percent and the max 5percent?
Also Turbo mode is enabled. Will it somehow work together?

I can report success doing this Mod Installation tonight also! :D

Say Yaaaaay! nVidia drivers 197.16 In Da House! Worked like a charm.... :spinny:

The only glitch was the VGA Patch has an uninstaller, which I ran 1st. Then I ran the patch, which looked like a quick Command Line sequence then BAM! Nothing...looked like it just quickly installed via Command Line, what do I know? It worked! ;)

If you simply extract all the nVidia 197.16 drivers files right INTO the Driver file, in the extracted OEM file, it makes it very simple...no copying is involved when you simply slip the drivers right into the Drivers file, no copying!

I had to restart TWICE to get things to take, didn't work the 1st restart....then another Restart Necessary notice came up, so I restarted the 2nd time, and WHAM! nVidia CP was up and running, and when I checked the 197.16 WHQL files are in fact 100% installed, and working fine. :radar:

Thanks a lot for this fantastic tip! I can go to sleep knowing that my laptop has the latest drivers in it 100% now, no more nVidia composite drivers from 2009 like before. It was worth staying up late tonight...now to all, a good night!

When you use the good program ( Cyberlink for exemple ), it uses all the possibilities of the GPU for a much faster encoding.

In the method described above, once you have copied all the extracted files from the nVIDIA drivers (from nVIDIA website) in the Display Folder of the Asus drivers (from Asus Website), from where do you run the setup to install the drivers ? From the Setup.exe file of the extracted nVIDIA drivers (now in the Display Folder) or the Setup.exe file of the main directory of Asus extracted drivers (the directory "before" you get into the Display folder)?

I didn't think it required a tweak to install the graphics drivers... I though I would simply install the drivers from the nVIDIA website...

    Thanks !

I use the setup.exe in the main directory of the extracted ASUS driver, and I don't know whether it's work to use the setup.exe in Display folder.

Install directly the drivers downloaded from the nvidia website will result in failure. I don't know how to install it directly....

The author of the original post sharing this method said it is taught by ASUS engineer.

i just bought this laptop in preparation for a business trip where i will be gone for 10 days. i wanted a laptop that was light and thin yet capable of playing back HD video and gaming. i paid for 1 day shipping so i would have time to set it up correctly.

well, i've had nothing but problems in the 24 hours i've had it. the system comes to a crawl and then will reboot, coming up to a screen that says "reboot and select proper boot device". i have to hold down the power button and then let windows load back up.

at first i thought it was the wireless network driver causing the problem. it seemed to only occur when i was using the network. it always happened when i was trying to copy files from my desktop to this PC. this morning before i left for work i tried disabling the wireless adapter and using the onboard NIC. when i came home, i was happy to see all 30gigs of files copied over and the laptop was still running!

yet after i started steam, once again, it quickly froze up then rebooted to the same screen. this time it wouldn't come back right away. eventually it loaded up and went to a screen where it said something along the lines of "Please wait while Windows configures your files"...almost as if i was doing a repair on the OS.

now i am starting to wonder if my hard drive is to blame. i say this because it has always been making fairly loud clicking noises and generally doesn't sound right for a brand new laptop.

my problem is similar to this: http://www.amazon.com/reboot-select...7BR1C209XBZR/1?_encoding=UTF8&asin=B002XZLURC

any ideas? is my only recourse at this point to try a fresh install of win7 (i have another copy) ?

Try going to device manager and see if you can update the wireless network drivers....I had similar problem and found there was an update which totally solved my re-booting problem. good luck....because once you solve this issue, I think this is a great machine.....

PS...regarding the fresh install....if you try that....read through this forum as there are lots of issues to consider when doing that....good luck.

i read through this whole thread. i remember your post where you said that which is another reason i thought that was the problem. but i have the A1, with the atheros wifi card. i found an older driver version and tried that to no avail. i had the latest version before that.

i have to say it is the hard drive causing this problem, honestly. accessing folders in windows explorer causes it to make loud clicking noises. sometimes it doesn't even go into the folder. opening up steam, which obviously needs to access the HD for the games installed, seems to cause the PC to crash. it does go to a BSOD but quickly restarts.

i saw the post about the win7 forum where they can investigate crash dump files to determine the problem. i went through the steps to ensure the dump file is created but it doesn't seem to be there. there's no minidump folder and no .dmp file on my system :(

i guess what i will try to do is reinstall windows. if that doesn't work, i guess i have to buy a new hard drive and try that. not sure what else i can do besides try and RMA the laptop. i would do that except i really need this laptop to be functional for my trip, which starts this weekend....

The "Setup File" in the Display Folder which as I recall offhand is exactly 371KB in size is the actuator/helper file which starts the install process for the nVidia drivers, and only the Display/VGA drivers. Double click that Icon and you will not have to worry about or double install the nVidia HDMI Sound driver!

My install went aok Purrfect doing this technique...

I hope this helps others install the new 197.16 hybrid driver!

Rex, you mentioned the nVidia CP. Is this software on the ASUS site under the UL30VT? I don't seem to have this on my notebook. Also, if I do the process to install the new nVidia driver just mentioned today, will that nVidia CP automatically install? Maybe you get it from the nVidia site?

2sga: CP is Nvidia Control Panel and you can find it in Control Panels... If it is not there.. Something is definitely wrong with your drivers. Reinstall your nvidia driver.

Thanks, Sagi. I do see it now. But the only way I see it is by going to Control Panel, then searching for nvidia. I do have an icon in the notification area of the task bar (with one or two green "things"), but clicking or right clicking does not give any choice to bring up the Control Panel. Am I missing something?

I wondered what you were posting about, the "performance button in the right top corner", something like that...so it's your GraphiX Boost button that has stopped working...I see. :(

Yes, that is a result of two things: the OEM installation, and most likely your Energy Saver settings. I encapsulated how to "fix" that problem in my review of the notebook at Amazon.com, because it's a common problem. Let me see if I can remember what I wrote, pretty much exactly as I wrote it. ;)

You most likely also do NOT have your nVidia CP and driver functioning either, in fact I am sure of that. Do yourself a favor, and "Right, Click" on the desktop (anywhere there's an open space)--does "NVIDIA Control Panel" appear as one of the options there? No? Thought so...

OK here's what you're gonna do, and hopefully it will cure your problem, at least temporarily until you have to deal with this again, if you somehow duplicate the same circumstances that caused it to happen in the 1st place. Here is what I wrote in my review of the UL30Vt-X1: :)

"I'll try and make this clean, clear, short, and sweet, but I may have to repeat myself a couple times, so don't mind the dialog...If you notice that the switchable graphics switch is OFF, and is not working it's probably because you have selected Energy Saver preferences that are not allowing nVidia Graphics to load, so here's how you solve this issue if you want nVidia back! Restart the computer, and immediately begin tapping F2 fully, every 1/2 a second or so, not stacatto-like, but 1/2-second intervals...That will get you into BIOS, which is where we need to go!

Once into BIOS use the arrow keys to cycle over to the Final Screen, (rigtht side of the choices, all the way RIGHT!) the DEFAULT Screen as it is known, where you set User or Manufacturer Values to use. SELECT "LOAD MANUFACTURER DEFAULTS!" After you do that, exit BIOS and SAVE the Values... Hit F10 once, Return, and WHAM! You're out of BIOS and the computer will load Defaults from Asus Gods! (not kidding!) It will take awhile for the computer to return to the desktop, don't think it's broken, it's NOT! Log on normally, and once the desktop stabilizes, it will take a few seconds as opposed to the normal Fast Boot Routine...then Right Click on the Desktop!

Voila! nVidia Control Panel Returns! It should be in the selections that keystroke generates, and THAT is HOW you get back the MISSING SWITCH, and the nVidia Control Panel if it ever happens to you, so that is down, dirty, done.

Next time you restart the computer, or shut down then restart, go back into BIOS again, ie hit F2 as above while the computer is offline, after Restart or Power Command is given, until BIOS Screen shows. Go back to the Default screen, the last BIOS Screen you can load, this time use the arrow key to select "Load User Defaults", then Exit BIOS...then F10 again, Return again, and KABAM! You're out of BIOS, and the computer will start up normally, Fast Boot is again enabled (if you have enabled it or it's at Default), and the desktop quickly appears. CHECK AGAIN... Right Click on the Desktop! Does the nVidia Control Panel appear as one of the choices? Yes? Good! All is Well in Asus Land now!

That is how you reset Power4Gear Hybrid Controls and nVidia Control Panel! Got IT!? Good, now let's get onto some more interesting topics, but that is how we get things back to Square No. 1 with the Control Panels. "

See if that works for you, as it seems to work for everybody who has tried it so far. The only reason it would not work is if you have somehow DELETED your nVidia Control Panel, so here's hoping that you didn't do that by chance...

Good luck, and I hope this helps you out.

Thanks for the detailed response Rexrzer but my NVIDIA Control Panel does show up when I right click the desktop.

I am using this application for monitoring battery/manually controlling battery profiles but I'd been using it without issues for at least a week now: http://batterycare.bkspot.com/en/index.html

I've just been using the notebook for about 20 minutes so far, and I honestly cannot see any difference vs the old, archaic drivers that used to reside here...other than in the CP now my Direct X is "11", where I don't remember it being detailed there before. :)

The CP is a bit more streamlined, and the 'look' is better of course, but as far as performance goes I cannot comment yet. I am very pleased that the new driver is working without issues though, just seems like it belongs here after all. Totally seamless operation so far, and hopefully forever! :D

I am going to have to view some Hulu videos and other Flash content first, then I'll play a game or two and report back here a bit later.

I tried drivers from eeepc 1000h for elantech windows 7 and seems more responsive then the latest ul30vt driver, but I'm looking for pinch to zoom but seems the latest eeepc 1000h elantech driver no longer support pinch to zoom ?

    Well...

Just tried the latest nvidia driver with above guide (thanks man)

Seems intall succesfully (win7-32) havent tried to play games though

And for the battery watchdog, I'm using batterybar, very cool program, seems I can extract more juice (14hrs) instead of 12hrs when using batterymode, wifi, downloading files with screen off (downclock with RMClock and easy turbo at 5%)

Still cannot figure out how to get VID under 0,9v weird

I'm starting to wonder if my GraphiX Boost button is physically broken. It doesn't feel any different but it doesn't trigger the battery profile switch anymore whereas I can switch battery profiles by selecting them manually without a problem. Switching between the integrated and the dedicated graphics seems to work fine as well.
