I can get PhysX with the Asus provided driver using this registry key:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\NVIDIA Corporation\Global\NVTweak]
"PhysXShowUI"=dword:00000001
-
I have been having an issue with the button that switches between Intel & NVidia video not working. Thinking that perhaps I should try reinstalling the drivers.
What do the ATK drivers do?
There are 5 ATK drivers, PowerGear4 and 2 Video drivers (NVidia & VGA Patch).
What order should I install these in? Are there any others I should install?
1 ATK ACPI Driver
2 ATK Hotkey
3 ATK Media
4 ATKOSO2
5 ATK Generic Function Service
PowerGear4
Nvidia Driver
VGA Patch (is this needed)
Thanks! -
To use all the special ASUS keys & functions you need to install all 5 ATK above; for Turbo setting and other ASUS power profiles you need PowerGear4 Hybrid, and there is a lot of discussion regarding video drivers in the last few pages I'd recommend you read.

..and this works on a non supported GPU?

I'm about to buy the UL30VT-A1. Amazon has it for $760. Is the Amazon service really that good? I'm leaving overseas in a month so that would be pretty nice to get a new laptop immediately if something is wrong.
Using Bing CB it's possible to get it for $700 but I assume J&R don't offer that good service? -
hey guys, haven't really seen this addressed on here, forgive and refresh if it has: I notice the "1" and "6" numeral keys have circles around them, rendering the numerals in negative space. I can only assume this is some sort hot key heads up, but alas, I cannot find its function.. any insight?
p.s. the up and down arrow keys also have this circle, though these could just be a design decision.. -
Does anybody know where to buy a ul30vt in Europe that will be shipped to the UK?
-
I bought mine from J&R and thought they were very good to deal with. The have customer service numbers with actual people that answer the phone, and they have a 30 day exchange policy.
mitt -
So if sth. in the first 30days they send my a new laptop i return the broken one without any problems?
-
Which is the BEST 500 GB 7200 RPM HDD for the UL30VT...???
It has to be....
1. Fast.
2. Queit.
3. Relaible.
4. Cost No Problem.
5. How much faster is a 7200 RPM HDD vs. 5400 RPM HDD....???
Thanks.

could someone write up a guide to a complete clean install with all the necessary drivers for the laptop?
-
hey guys, the Asus ul30jt drivers are up on asus website.
Do you think we can somehow hack the intel driver and update our notebook's integrated gpu driver? -
Unfortunately, that doesn't work either.
It won't let me create a custom resolution either.
-
You have probably noticed that the sound volume, even when maxxed out is still fairly low. Here is an easy fix:
Right click on your white speaker icon in the taskbar, choose "playback devices"
On the playback tab, highlight "Realtek High Definition Audio-Default Device"
Click properties-another window will appear
Choose the enhancements tab
Scroll thru the choices available to the very bottom one "Loudness Equalization" and check the box, then click apply.
You will immediately notice louder external speaker volume levels. Now it's not gonna blow out your windows, but it is fairly substantial. -
Hi, I was wondering what anti-glare screen protector is the best for this notebook. I hear that any will degrade picture quality a little bit but all I can ever find that truly fit this notebook are either the SGP Steinheil AG (sent domestically), and KAI or some other generic one (ordered on eBay shipped from Hong Kong).
Anyone here have experience with any of these anti-glare screen protectors? I will spend the $40 for the SGP if it is worth it but if the ~$10 ones from Hong Kong are better I can order that instead. I bought a privacy filter which was designed for a 13.3 inch screen earlier but it seems that this screen is not the same size as a "standard" 13.3 inch wide screen. -
My "Loudness Equalization" box is unchecked by default. When I check the box, then click apply, the speakers get quieter not louder !! -
That is weird??? Mine did just the opposite.
-
"Loudness Equalization" = Dynamic com-pander. Loud made soft and soft made louder for steady volume.
This notebook rocks compared to the lowest I have ever experienced; my old 1201n! -
Here ya go:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148374
How much faster? 5-10% at best. Worth the hassle of an upgrade and reloading the O/S and your apps? Your call. -
Thanks for the excellent tip. With this tweak, all features are enabled on my notebook with the modified 197.16 drivers.
I've created the .reg file containing the tweak above and included as attachment at the bottom of this post. Just extract the zip file to a folder, doubleclick the .reg file to merge to the Windows registry, make sure to install the latest PhysX runtime (link available in my previous post), then go to Nvidia Control Panel and enable PhysX there. That's all there is to it.
Yes, it works. I take back what I said about the G210M being too sucky for GPU-accelerated PhysX in my previous posts. I think it still sucks as a gaming graphics card, but it sucks less now.
I used PhysX FluidMark to confirm hardware PhysX and benchmark indeed shows about 2x increase compared to software PhysX (1359 points versus 676 points in 800x600 windowed mode) so this proves that PhysX is indeed accelerated by the G210M when enabled. You can prove it yourself by getting FluidMark at
http://www.geeks3d.com/20090723/physx-fluidmark-1-1-1-postfx-update/
However, I suspect that in actual games that use hardware PhysX, enabling it will cause a severe hit in performance which makes those games unplayable, so that's why Nvidia decided to disable GPU-accelerated PhysX by default on the G210M and not give us the choice to enable it. Maybe someone can confirm this by playing GPU-accelerated PhysX-enabled games like Batman: Arkham Asylum after patching the game to support hardware PhysX.
I'm sorry that it didn't work. I've read on other forums about the 19x drivers having problems with not supporting resolutions which older drivers used to support, so it's most likely the new driver's fault. I guess you'll have to go back to the original Asus hybrid driver to get that resolution back.Attached Files:

Pretty sure there was one written about 20 pages back in this thread. Post if you find anything interesting.
Haven't seen any hard numbers to prove upgrading the video drivers makes any difference in overall graphical performance of the ul30vt. I'm happy with the stock drivers. -
I personally don't see any significant increase in performance after updating to modded 197.16, but a few others have reported higher framerates in some games. I don't play those games so I can't confirm. After reading several posts about some people having problems with the modded 197.16 (for some reason my notebook is spared from those problems), I'm starting to think that it's not really worth the trouble. It's an interesting curiousity to be able to update it to 197.16 and should only be done by those who enjoy tweaking and learning more about their notebook, and also know enough about how to fix things when things go wrong, and things will indeed go wrong when playing with modded drivers. Those who only care about getting work done on their notebook should avoid the modded driver. The original Asus hybrid driver is currently still a very capable and stable driver, and I recommend it for problem-free graphics and gaming.
Those looking for significant performance increase in modern games should really get a gaming notebook which has the proper components, cooling, and ventilation for heavy gaming. You are killing your UL30/80Vt if you keep playing modern games on it for extended periods. For this reason I don't recommend any kind of overclocking over the Turbo mode since it will kill your notebook faster. All of the above is solely just my humble opinion though, so any other opinions on this matter are welcomed.

Brief Update:
I have manually added the registry key provided by PeteNatas & installed the the directx redistributable and physx updates via the links provided by itaru. I can confirm that PhysX is recognized, enabled and funtional
However, still no OpenCL support. I am wondering if a similar registry hack can enable OpenCL support, supposing that all the necessary files have been installed via the modded hybrid package.... hmmmm.... -
My graphics switch button (Intel/Nvidia) works when I am logged in as Admin, but not when I am logged in as regular user. Anyway to get this button to work while logged in as a non-admin?
Thanks -
can I ask, how did you check that it was actually functioning?
cheers ! -
I wonder if this is why I'm on my third 7900GS..
Agree 200%, I'm considering going back to a desktop for gaming, it's just i'm hooked on the little buggers. -
I have found the problem why OpenCL is not working for people who installed 197.16 using my modded INF. My modded INF did not include 2 registry keys needed to enable OpenCL. I think my notebook has those registry keys already from one of the previous driver installations that I did, so those keys remain intact in my registry which is why OpenCL continued to work for me after updating to modded 197.16. Credit goes to PeteNatas and Po$er for the idea of checking the registry.
I should've checked this when I created my modded file, but I was too lazy to sift through all the registry settings added in the INF file and compare them with the regular 197.16 INF file. Po$er's post finally got me off my lazy butt to search for those settings, and once I know what to look for it was really easy. I'll be releasing a final version of the INF file which will include the needed registry keys after final testing. I will also be integrating the Physx registry hack into my new modified INF.
For those who have installed the modded 197.16 driver, I've attached the necessary .reg file at the bottom of this post which adds the missing keys to enable OpenCL. Just unzip the file to a folder, doubleclick the .reg file, click Yes/OK and all that which will merge the keys into the Windows registry. This will take effect immediately so no need for a restart. Just run GPU-Z and GPU Caps Viewer and OpenCL should be there in all its glory. Combine it with the PhysX registry hack (.reg file available in one of my previous posts) and all features are finally enabled on your notebook.

i just received my laptop today and i want to do a clean install to get rid of the bloatware and all that nonsense. i have some questions that maybe you can answer and help me.
how would i do a clean install without an optical drive?
could you give me the build order of the drivers to install?
i have more questions but i totally forgot them. just came back and wrote this halfway when i left.
thanks! -
All info about enabling PhysX on the G210M is here: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showpost.php?p=6119926&postcount=3120
Some (if not most) of the games listed there do not use GPU-accelerated PhysX. Most use the CPU for PhysX. Best way to confirm GPU-accelerated PhysX is to run some PhysX demo/benchmarking program which will tell you whether software or hardware PhysX is being used. I listed one in the link above.
An external DVDROM drive is recommended for the easiest way to do a clean install, but it's possible to create a USB flashdisk which contains Windows 7. You still need a computer with a DVDROM drive to create it though. I assume your notebook comes with 2 discs, one is the Windows 7 disc and the other is the Drivers/Software disc. Read this article on how to create a bootable USB flashdisk out of the Windows 7 disc: http://arstechnica.com/business/news/2009/12/-the-usb-flash-drive.ars
As for the drivers, the first things to install in a certain order are the ATK drivers and utilities. You can install all the other drivers/utilities in any order after installing the ATK ones. Install the ATK software in the following order:
1. ATKACPI Driver
2. ATK Generic Function Service Utility
3. ATK Hotkey Utility
4. ASUS ATKOSD2 Utility
5. ATK Media Utility
6. Keyboard Device Filter Utility (not part of ATK but should install it)
Afterwards just install the rest of the drivers in any order, and finally any software utilities you want. Hope that helps. -
Seagate HD's basically are non-contenders in the 'platter' HD sweepstakes, because the Hitachi Travelstar I reviewed here is the King of the Hill...enjoy the reading, and by all means score yours @ Amazon.com, now for about $94 shipped for the RETAIL version, sealed box, etc et al:
http://www.amazon.com/Hitachi-Trave...1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1270788382&sr=8-1
My review is under "Wavey Davey", the 2nd review posted there...
Also I posted two performance HD Tune Pro 3.50 screen shots in that review, which are pretty telling about the Read and Seek speed of that HD, that is by far, hands down, the best performing 2.5" platter notebook HD in the world right now!
-
actually it only comes with 1. i read about that 2 disk earlier and i wondered why mine only had 1. its the drivers only. however, when i first started my laptop up it popped up a message asking me if i wanted to make backup disks. which is impossible without an external optical drive. so i did not make it. could i use poweriso to mount an image of WIN7?
i should install those ATK in order after my clean install right?
thanks again for the help. -
If you didn't get the Windows 7 disc then you need to get Windows 7 from somewhere else. You can use poweriso to mount an image of Win7 to create a bootable USB flashdisk of Win7, but the only way to do a clean (format harddisk) install without a DVDROM drive is through the bootable USB flashdisk. And yes, once clean install is done then you install the ATK software.

Such a "To-Do About Nothing" with all this hybrid video driver installing in our Asus UL30VT-series notebooks. I tried it both ways, all features enabled, finally, with the newest hybrid 197.16 driver setup thanks to Itaru, and the others who posted about modded Reg files, et al.
However, I have gone back to the OEM Asus 186.88 drivers for both video and sound. I just simply give up on getting any of the hybrid drivers to work again in this notebook...for 2 easy to understand reasons:
1) No recognizable performance gain whatsoever, in everything from 3DMark06 to any of the current games that I own, and that's a bunch of them...in fact the OEM drivers are more stable for overclocking and 3DMark06 testing by far, with this notebook
2) I just ordered an Asus G51JX-A1 that is designed as a gaming notebook from the ground up, and *that* will suffice for my addictions to various games I am certain. I'll keep the UL30VT for what it is/was originally intended, as it's my go-to travel and work notebook, perfect size, perfect features, an xlnt movie viewing notebook for planes and travel, and that's what I'll use it for
I am certain that I will get flack for posting such a thing after all this passion and programming "triumphs and victories" with the hybrid drivers, finally after so much work by so many people, but it won't change a thing...you're all just wasting your time!
I know I sure wasted a LOT of my own time and energy getting the hybrid video and sound drivers to install, and work right in the UL30VT.
It's not the answer if you want this notebook to both last, and work fine in the long haul/long run, so have at it I guess, but I'm done with the whole deal...now please, can we start to post more interesting things about the notebooks, and just move on with respect to hybrid drivers?
Those of you so hooked on the topic of hybrid drivers for the UL30VT should make your own, special thread about it and stop filling up the bandwidth in the owner's thread. There are so many cool things to write about that do not involve installing hybrid video and sound drivers, honestly there are!
-
I installed the new 197.16 drivers onto my UL80VT however noticed 2 problems. Firstly the inf file used, if the driver version is listed inside the inf file as 197.16 then when I install the driver and restart using the methods stated previously in this thread, it will show incorrect resolution and the NVIDA display control will not be there. However if i change the inf file to the old version listed (one from asus site) it will install correctly and correct resolution. (old version meaning i just copy and paste the line from the old file into the new inf file)
Another problem I have found is that when i run a benchmark to test this new driver, first of all the Windows Experience Index, previous to this driver I was using the 195.xx driver and recieved the WEI as 5.9, after the 197.16 installation I had it as 5.8.
I tested this again using another program "Performance Test (64 Bit)" and both 2D and especially 3D scores decreased dramatically. Some scores in the 3D decreasing by up to 15-20%. -
Does anyone have a recommendation for a wireless card that supports the 5GHz band? And a guide for changing the wireless card?
-
I have created a separate thread for ongoing discussions about the modified 197.16 hybrid driver over at http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?p=6120876#post6120876
Please direct all discussions about the hybrid driver there. I've posted an updated guide there on how to create modded 197.16 driver with all 4 features working (OpenCL, CUDA, PhysX, DirectComputer). Any feedback and discussions about the hybrid drivers are welcomed there since it doesn't seem that they are welcomed here. -
The Intel 6200 and 6300 wifi link mini-PCIe cards do. And here's the instructions on how to replace your wifi card:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showpost.php?p=5979592&postcount=2468
Thanks for the post. Very helpful thread indeed
-
Followed the instruction in the previous pages to update the VGA, everything work like a charm
Opencl - checked
PhysX - checked
Cuda - checked
DirectCompute - checked
Flash H/W Accelaration - checked
Thank you everyone, especially itaru, you're the man!!!

Itaru included a link for fluidmark... which can be found at ozone3d
-
Maybe not welcome from 1 poster...anyway it is prob a good idea to start a dedicated thread regarding modded drivers. That way those of us interested wouldnt have to constantly dig around the owner's lounge seeing the same old questions and comments asked over and over again (ie: those that the "search" function would have answered long ago or are about nothing and off topic). Thanks for your contiributions Itaru.

hey itaru! i currently have windows 7 home and im doing a clean install with win7 professional. Im doing the flash usb boot method. anyways..after i selected where to copy the new win7 OS (the partition with the current installed OS) it says it will not delete my old OS stuff but move it into a folder called .old and etc. Should i let it do this? i want a total clean install. i tried going into BIOS to make it boot from usb but it didnt have that option (did this so that i could delete the OS partition drive and then have it completely cleaned). which one is the easiest method to do?
Secondly, is there a way to create a recovery disk through usb flash drive or external harddrive?
can i use the product key on the bottom of my laptop to activate a retail version of home premium?
EDIT: ok i just thought of something. how about this. install magicISO (or an equivalent program such as daemon tools, powerISO, etc..) and create an "optical drive". the computer will now see an optical drive in My Computer. Is there a way to "add" a blank disk (pretend) to the optical drive and have it link to an usb flash drive or harddrive so that i could burn that image?
EDIT2: nevermind. found it.
EDIT3: nevermind again. doesnt work. all i need is to find a program that makes virtual dvd-r/w. i used virtual cd but it failed to make the virtual dvdrw -
When you said there no USB option in BIOS, maybe try it with "Removable Device" instead which I think it for 'USB'
i don't know if it going to work, because I did try to do a clean install as well using USB loaded with OS, but when I reboot it won't boot from the USB at all. So I did with external DVD-ROM instead. -
ok new scenario. ill just copy and paste what i wrote at another forum.
here is what i want to do. actually here is some background first
firstly, my new laptop comes with bloatware and etc. i do not want it. thus i want to do a clean install. secondly, this laptop does not come with an optical drive, nor do i want to purchase one. thirdly, the package did not include a recovery disk, but instead tells me to create one.
and this is what i want to do
i want to reinstall the OS (home premium, screw what i said earlier in the other posts about professional). but to do this i need to create the recovery cds. and here is the problem. ive created virtual burner drives which work. the asus AI Recovery Burner detects the virtual drive and continues to create an ISO of the OS. after it finishes it asks me to put in some blank writiable dvds. and here is the problem. all the programs ive used, theres so many but the legit looking ones are phantom drive and virtual cd which can create a virtual blank dvd-r and mount it into the virtual burner drive. but everytime i mount it, the AI Recovery Burner says "An exception error occured during the burning progress. DVD-1 needs to be burned again. Please insert a blank writable DVD."
I dont understand what im doing wrong here. i wish daemon tools had the ability to create virtual blank dvds. anyone know a way around this or another option?
btw, is there some way to boot from usb before start up? i pressed delete during start up and i got into BIOS but i couldnt find the boot from usb -
I am not an expert in the USB Booting Dept., but surely if you create a bootable USB Flash Drive with the ISO image of Windows 7 HP 64-bit inside it, downloaded from the MS web site or any other number of places I can think of, you can boot the UL30VT-X1/A1 from the external USB device!
I recall a very good thread on this topic over at the 1201N Forum at the Asus.com web site, which I participated in when I had a 1201N. Have you tried researching this topic there? You must *join* the web site before you can participate in any of the discussions there, but that only takes about 30 seconds, it's quick...
http://vip.asus.com/forum/view.aspx...=20&model=Eee+PC+1201N&page=1&SLanguage=en-us
That Forum thread on the EEE PC 1201N has a couple XLNT links in it with respect to creating and using a bootable USB Flash Drive, so I suggest that you join the Forum there and proceed to check out that particular thread, and the posts in it.
You can also search there for info on making the computer boot off the USB Flash drive, and how to enable it in BIOS.
I wish I had more direct info about it to help you out, but I've always used an external optical drive for everything related to installs of OS's, software, flashing the BIOS (unless the computer uses WinFlash), everything related to computing for yours truly revolves around external HD's, optical drives, and the media that goes with them. It sure makes life a lot easier to have such tools, and they are not expensive.
The Asus external portable optical drive is just about $50 at Amazon.com, if you decide to get one to help out this project, and any others you may run into in the future. It's a wise investment.
Good luck, and I hope I've helped a little anyway...
-
I am sorry if you took that post of mine negatively itaru, but it's good that you made a new dedicated thread for the hybrid driver installation and everything that goes with it. I meant *nothing* negative in my post, simply stated the obvious, and I had hoped that people would take it constructively, not negatively. Sigh...it's hard to please the many when a few want the whole owner's forum dedicated to one particular topic, which is what was happening the past 10 pages or so in this owner's lounge.
The installation of the drivers is indeed a very interesting topic, and one that deserves its own thread, so it's very nice of you to start a dedicated thread, and it's appreciated by everyone who wants to pursue that topic, I am certain.
Good luck, and again, my apologies if you think I was being negative with my post about making a dedicated thread for the driver topic. No harm was meant, and certainly nothing personal to all your hard, excellent work with that project...just a superlative effort on your part to make it work correctly!
Good luck with it, and hope the thread is a grand success.
-
No hard feelings at all on my part. In fact I should be thanking you for the suggestion of making a dedicated thread for it since it never occurred to me until you brought it up. So thank you for the great suggestion!
Having a dedicated thread for the topic means it can now get more exposure and not be limited to just the UL30VT. It's a work in progress and will hopefully continue in order to create the Holy Grail of perfect hybrid drivers for the UL30/50/80VT.
-
First of all, don't bother with creating recovery DVDs using the AI Recovery Burner. All that does is make an image of your current Windows partition complete with all the bloatware. It does not create a clean Windows 7 DVD install disc.
Once you have created a bootable USB flash drive using the Microsoft Windows 7 DVD to USB tool from an actual clean Windows 7 DVD or ISO, make sure it's plugged into your notebook before restarting to enter the BIOS. Once you enter the BIOS, go to the Boot menu and choose Boot Device Priority. Set the first one to Removable Device, and the second one to your hard disk drive, and the third one to Disabled. Then go back out to the Boot menu and then choose Hard Disk Drives. Make sure your USB is the first one listed there, and the second one is your hard disk drive. Change the order if not. Finally, save the BIOS settings and reboot. If it still won't boot from the USB, restart and enter BIOS again and repeat the above. Sometimes it will take 2 or 3 restarts before your notebook will boot from USB, and all that time the USB flash drive should always be plugged in. Try switching to another USB port if it still won't work after several tries.
As for the license key, I'm not sure that the key listed on the sticker below the notebook will work on the retail version of Windows 7. Hopefully it will work. When installing clean version of Windows 7, you should leave the recovery partition alone so that you can still revert back to Asus-factory Windows installation if your clean installation is unsuccessful.
Good luck!
EDIT 1:
The product key on the sticker below your notebook will require activation by Microsoft if you decide to use it during clean installation. You can get more info about it from here: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?p=6094638
EDIT 2:
Better yet, you can retrieve your actual Windows 7 product key using the following program: http://www.majorgeeks.com/Magical_Jelly_Bean_Keyfinder_d2612.html -
how to lower the CPU voltage by RMClock?
I searched lots of posts teaching this, even unlocked the VID.
but still,i can only find 6.0x. -
Since my Ul30 came without OS, I installed Win 7 using "Microsoft Windows 7 DVD to USB" too. I had problems creating USB at first because I used 32-bit windows to create 64-bit image. I kept getting errors at the end of the process. Solution was to mount 32-bit Win 7 image, grab it's "bootsect.exe" and use if in tool.
After creating bootable USB drive I had absolutely no problems installing. I don't even think there's need for changes in BIOS. Maybe you need to change boot priority at most. From there on it's just standard installation procedure.
