According to CPU-Z clock gets even lower than stock (1066MHz vs 1700MHz) when it's trying to save power. I think you can lock it there using extreme settings in ASUS's Power4Gear utility.
I tried that and still got good performance while opening and using programs like Word. 720p YouTube was perfect also. I can't tell what battery life is like then tho. I've always used it in "high performance" settings. You'll have to wait for others for better opinion since I've only had my laptop for few weeks. Making a guess, I would say 8h shouldn't be problematic on "low power" settings using Word or similar. You might benefit quite a lot if you got UL30Vt with larger battery (5600mAh). That alone could add about 1h of life, if you need it that bad.
If you later find out that battery life is good enough you can alway up P4G's profile and get some extra boost when it's needed. In my case CPU seems to jump fast from 1066 to 1733MHz when stressed. I haven't used any tools that draw graphs to give you more detailed analysis tho.
p.s. Your signature says you're planning on buying 30GB SSD. May I point out that 30GB could be a tad low. I used 55GB just to set up my Win7 system and install few programs. I'm no expert in space saving tho, so you might get along just fine. If I were to replace stock drive, I would probably go with 80GB Intel's X25-M.
-
Really? I thought 30GB will be enough because the only things I have installed on my computer is win7 and word docs + maybe 1 game? My laptop which is 2.5 years old currently is only using 19GB out of 160GB, because i store all my multimedia files in my portable external drive. Then again my laptop has almost no programs installed except for codecs, video players and instant msg programs. Perhaps ill reconsider and get a 60GB then. thank you.
-
To be honest I have few rather heavy programs installed (M$ Visual Studio, part of CS4 suite...). On the other hand only my C:\Windows folder takes about 16GB. I don't know if that's normal for clean install since I used only WinXp till 2 weeks ago which hardly makes me an expert in Win7.
I might be telling you what you know already, but you have to take note that SSDs behave better when they're not completely full. Beside that they even get faster with size since they have more physical chips to work with in parallel. 100$ jump might be worth to make. Lastly I would like to point out that Intel's X25-M rly is that much faster than any competitor (in sub 200$ price range).
I only pointed that out couse size seemed low to me. I'm not the one who knows what you need and how you use your PC, so take my opinions lightly

how hard is it to solder the backlit keyboard and get it to work? is there any way of disabling the lighting after it's soldered or is it on every second the notebook's on?
-
I'm sure no expert on doing it, but I did read the thread pretty thoroughly where the mod was laid out and the solder points were noted, how to do it is another story though for my soldering skills. That is very tender stuff, the motherboard's surface and capacitors et al, so YMMV with any soldering job. Not too many folks have complained about it being extremely difficult in that thread however, I did note that consistently...but maybe those were experienced solderers!
I went Pasadena on the whole deal because you cannot turn it off at all, without a sophisticated "switch" that gets installed also, with a "pressure point" to turn it off and on, so go figure. It looked to be more than I wanted to bite off with my UL30VT-X1, if you get my drift.
There are plenty of folks in that thread who have done the mod, no doubt, so don't be shy about it if you really need a lighted keyboard...myself? I'm a touch typist so don't need to see the keys clearly anyway, on any keyboard.
I didn't even go for the G73 Core i7 720QM "Republic of Gamers" laptop, for my range topping PC laptop, which has a lighted keyboard also, as I found a better bargain in the N71-series, and no lighted keyboard there either...so you can tell I really don't care about lighted keyboards, but the discussion was very intense and interesting for reading!
-
Ah, I never have used Express gate..my P6831 has this feature as well but I won't use it.
I did a clean install and have 70 odd services just itching to cause a problem. You may have a conflict there? -
Read the posts. Unless you add a switch, the light stays on.
I'm a technician and still manage to mess up here and there. Plenty of success stories here but not too many "OMG i just wiped out my warranty and electrocuted my girlfriend" stories, no? Hey, it was the girlfriend or my Labradore...
Seriously, you have a choice to practice soldering for about $30, you need the right tip and correct grade of solder, or use the wire "glue" which must be used very carefully. Unless you can dissolve wire glue i would like to hear safe methods to remove this stuff for warranty or trouble shooting reasons. -
hey guys,
I recently bought an Asus UL30vt as well. Its an excellent laptop and using it around uni, i can usually use it for 8-9hours (including sleep times during breaks etc.)
i am encountering however, an extremely annoying problem. i might just reformat the computer soon.
the computer is new, and there is hardly any software except, avast, office 2010, adobe pro, foxit and chrome. there's other things like mpc, paint.net, picassa, virtual clone drive.
when using windows explorer, from the start it can be running blazingly fast, i could be running cod4 and office 2010 and plenty of explorer files and 20 tabs on chrome and it would still switch perfectly. however, there are certain times, especially when i switch (alt-tab) between office 10 and explorer that it lags for 5-10s. when i manage to switch to the desired program, there is not lag whatsoever running it. however, hovering the mouse over the icons in task bar shows no aero peek or icons responding. clicking on the icons freezes the computer for 5-10s. alt-tab is the only viable way to switch.
the thing is that, maybe after 20 minutes, sometimes 5 minutes. it resolves?! its all fine, but then it might come back. its almost as though its random. when it is "slow" i'm pretty sure i can hear some harddrive sounds.
things i've tried:
uninstalling office 2010 and running office 07
uninstalling all office
switching off all windows effects
using turbo mode
switched off windows indexing
made windows explorer not 'preview' icons
uninstalled pretty much ALL asus bloatware except the webcam
in the event that i give up and reformat it. since there was NO recovery disk (there was a driver's disk) AND no usb external drive at hand. how should i go about performing a clean install? and after that, installing drivers? (i've made an iso file of the drive CD)
thanks guys for you help! any feedback would be greatly appreciated!
kind regards,
tanhi -
I did clean install on new drive. No huge benefits but your millage may vary. Then again i don't recall the slow down your seeing. Of course the right mix of programs and services can cause a whole lot of problems in 64 bit environs.
Did you check your Performance Monitor to see what was sucking your CPU? Was virus scan taking place, I use antivir for last three years so not familiar with the rest. -
thanks hydra
no thats the weird thing! right now its in one of its sucky lag modes. but chrome is running brilliantly with about 27 tabs. the cpu usage is only around 7-6% and ram usage is like 40%. right now, office 2010, chrome and explorer are the only things running. when i open office and chrome, (after the switch lag) they run beautifully.
however, when i open explorer, there is terrible lag. clicking to open another folder takes up to 10 seconds.
no, i have uninstalled avast and so there is zero antivirus running atm.
that is a good point that perhaps the 32 bit and 64 bits all running are lagging. but i'm thinking it might be something to do with the hdd :S as the lag is intermittent and onset doesn't seem to be triggered by any particular program. however, the terrible combination of windows explorer and word 2010 and chrome (the most used programs ever!) summon this lag from nowhere.
thanks for your feedback

Do you get Optimus with these hacked drivers? The older 189.07 driver for Asus laptops had Optimus ( http://www.nvidia.com/object/optimus_win7_x64_notebook_asus.html), I'm curious if this one has it.
-
ok. classic tragic story. i was impatient and tried to reformat the computer. it works fine except I tried installing a different version. apparently you can't install a different version of w7 with the recovery partition (with w7 hp) still on there. I still want to keep the recovery partition though.
any advice? is this partition of any use? -
With your 1080p video on a TV you should expect to have some overscan. In my experience you have to dig into your TV's menus in order to fit the entire 1080p screen edge to edge, and some TVs don't do that at all.
AFAIK there is no S/PDIF in the headphone jack, I have no such device. The HDMI only supports stereo, not even AC3 pass thru or anything.
I'm thinking of getting an Asus Xonar U1 to compensate, and turn my UL30VT into a full-blown media center:
http://aphnetworks.com/reviews/asus_xonar_u1 -
What a coincidence, I hope it works well. Cheers
-
Me, myself and I would simply wipe the drive. You can use the driver DVD or download needed ones.
I understand the restore simply puts back same junk. If your going different version of W7 then I don't see the point in keeping the restore partition.
I kept W7HP but used second new drive, original drive now for emergency restore..unless I pay the bucks and upgrade W7. YMMV
-
Depends on your player. I have 720P file with core DTS which plays fine through my Denon to Sony upscaled to 1080P all HDMI. I set my output for 1080P, no problems!
I can also send my DTS or dolby(ugg) across with standard DVD movie ISO using HDMI 1.3 so see no need to buy stuff. The UL30vt will make a fine Media computer. -
So I just recieved my asus UL30VT a couple days ago...just with any laptop I buy I always do a reformat to get rid of any bloatware it comes with...So now I have a couple questions..everything is installed it works great but now I have to reinstall all the drivers...does anyone have a list of the important drivers needed and non of the other drivers that I dont need? also everything works and the only think that doesn't is the button to switch graphic cards to save power..I couldn't find the driver for that and was hoping someone can point me to the right direction...thanks

That is the list of drivers you need to install, and there are two sure ways to avoid the install of all the Asus software programs, games, your choice:
1)Use the Driver & Utilities DVD ROM that came with your computer, and hit "AutoRun", but when it starts it process stop it! That will bring up the "List Dialog" of the procedure, where you can do down the list, driver by driver, anid check off the ones you need and uncheck the ones you don't...that is the *Easy Way* to do this driver installation, but I don't recommend doing it that way unless you are a truly lazy person and don't care what driver versions get installed...
2) Get out your favorite type of media, be it a USB Flash Drive or a DVD ROM/CD ROM (think a DVD has to be used because you'll go over the 750MB limit of a CD with the extent of drivers that need to get installed), and make your own, special copy of the driver install list, driver by driver, one by one, or group by group, which you simply get by using the Asus Support web pages and searching for drivers for the UL30VT, "All", which brings up the Utilities and Drivers for the machine, and go from there. Doing it *This Way* means you can pick and choose the latest and greatest drivers for each application, leave out everything you don't want (especially all the software and games), and there is ZERO ("0") Chance that a mistake will get made, and the Asus DVD ROM takes over and installs everything anyway, even when you've unchecked all the ones you didn't want (I've seen that happen before, and doing it this way eliminates that possibility!).
I have done a zillion reformat and installs on new and OEM PCs that I've either built or purchased, and way No.2 as described is the only sure, certain way to go about reinstalling drivers and utilities, especially on a notebook PC, which has so many intricate little interactive driver systems, some that depend on others to work correctly or work at all, so I leave it up to you which way to proceed. It has to be one way or the other, those are your choices, so YMMV with the No.1 method, and it's sure to be done right if you choose No.2 method.
Good luck, and I hope this helps you out with your job ahead.

rexrzer727, you say its possible to upgrade the ram of the asus ul30tv-a1 to 8GB. Hoy you do it a how muchos is the cost
-
That depends on *where* You BUY the 2 x 4GB SODIMMs of DDR3 1066Mhz SDRAM, you know? I got really, really lucky, and one of the nice guys here turned me on to his eBay vendor. The vendor had "10" of those magical 4GB SODIMMs available, Samsung the brand, and CL7-7-7 the timing, so good for our laptops, and I bid on 2 of them. Paid for them...$257.94 shipped, a very, very good deal!
Then the weirdest eBay experience I've ever had occurred. Two days later I get an email from the vendor, "The RAM has gone out of stock during processing, so would you take a REFUND, then we'll notify you when we get the RAM back in stock, and we'll 'Hold' two SODIMMs for you?" Well, I hit the roof when I read that email...and called the seller's bluff, as we say. I sent them an email from *HELL Itself*
I would say, and basically told them I would personally ruin their stellar eBay reputation if they didn't come up with 8GB of RAM for me, at the agreed on price, and to do it "Quickly, please, because time is of the essence"!
That started an email "war" between the seller and myself, and to put a long story short, I got eBay involved with this little tussle, and they helped me "persuade" the seller to send 2 x 4GB SODIMMs of some "Super Talent" RAM the vendor was selling in yet another auction, for a whole lot MORE $$$, but we persuaded the vendor to send my RAM "immediately", which they in fact did do, and I got my 8GB of RAM for $257 shipped after all...but what a scene, I swear!
Never, ever been through anything like that on eBay before, and lesson to the wise here: Beware of things that seem "too good to be true"...like that RAM deal! Hah-Hah! If I hadn't stood my ground and demanded that the seller come through with the deal we made, I could/would have probably paid a lot MORE $$ for that 8GB of SODIMMs than I wanted to pay...but as push came to shove, I won, he lost, and I got my RAM.
Now Amazon.com sells Crucial/Micron and also Corsair DDR3 1066Mhz SODIMMs for a whole lot more $$ than I paid for mine, but you can check that out for yourself at your leisure! I originally bought mine there, and returned it within the 30-day "Return Window" at Amazon.com, and got a full refund so I could buy the Samsung "Super Talent" RAM for $257. Amazon.com charged me $428 for the same type of RAM, for comparison!
So it really depends on where you buy the RAM, and you cannot take chances on the quality of RAM for these notebooks, because they use a lot of RAM all the time, as you might guess, at least mine sure does! I have open anywhere from 4-10 programs all at once consistently when I am using this notebook, and it does need all 8GB of RAM to "keep up" with Rex!
Do your shopping wisely, and purchase from a reputable vendor, but don't pay $400 for it! That is just slightly nutz, if you ask me...so I had 2nd thoughts about my $428 purchase at Amazon.com and was indeed very pleased to be able to buy the RAM for $257 shipped, UPS Ground, in California, to California address, and all was well.
That's my RAM story for the Forum tonight, and I hope that things have calmed down on the RAM price market vs when I bought my 16GB of RAM, which was 8GB for the UL30VT, and 8GB for my new N71JQ-A1 range topping Core i7 720QM-equipped desktop "replacement" notebook...ie they both have 8GB of RAM in them, and I would not have it any other way!
Good Luck, and may God Bless!
-
rexrzer, that's an amazing price you got for your 8GB of ram. I'm still using the stock 4GB and so far it's "just" enough for my photoshop usage. I'm waiting for the prices to come down a bit more before plunging on a couple of 4GB sticks. However, seeing that there is currently a shortage in supply for DRAM, I'd expect to see an increase in price for memory modules in the near future.
-
Yes, it was quite a score! I didn't believe it at first, but then I bid on 2 of those SODIMMs and paid for them, and the rest is history...$257.94 shipped to be exact, and I am using that RAM right now and it works a treat. 'Super Talent' Samsung DDR3 1066Mhz SODIMM 204-pin modules is what Everest Ultimate calls them, so I'm a believer.
I just did a cursory look at eBay tonight, and there's Samsung 4GB SODIMMs up for sale for $149.99 each, with 4 available in this seller's quiver:
http://cgi.ebay.com/Samsung-DDR3-10...ultDomain_0&hash=item3cabab395e#ht_2322wt_766
So prices are still fairly reasonable over at eBay, but not so cheap as the price that I paid for my first two SODIMMS, which was $128.97 each, shipped UPS Ground in California. Still, $150 each is pretty good for today's market, yah?
I think if you were to go through all the listings for that type of RAM you'd turn up some similar if not slightly cheaper listings. You know I cannot fathom running either of my Asus notebooks on 4GB RAM, but I guess if you have to you have to...mine would probably choke with the things I put them through.
Good luck, David, on your search for good, cheap RAM!
-
$150 per 4GB stick isn't bad, given that going through Bing.com offers a further 8% discount. I'd probably wait further to see how the prices play out.

Hi all,
This thread has become so huge as to be useless, so I compiled all the most frequent questions into a new thread, while it's still fresh in my head from reading it.

That's nice man. It's true that after some time these threads become a little bit confusing and hard to search. Thumbs up!

I wanted to let you know that I've been using P4G Hybrid 1.34 for a while now. Got it from Notebooks -> Apps on Asus support page.
Everything seems to work fine. I didn't notice any problems with saving/switching profiles in current version. I even think that "battery saving" option looks slightly better then on 1.31, not 100% sure tho. My graphics switching is still dodgy as it was with 1.24 or any other combination I tried.
I'm still trying to figure out what's causing my switch button to stop working. I get best results coming from hybernation, which fixes it every time. Fresh boot and sleep seem to break the button.
May I ask if there's anyone with 210 bios without any button problems, or did you all stick with 208?
I've reinstalled all ATK drivers. I've tried P4G 1.24, 1.25, 1.31 and now I'm on 1.34. I've reinstalled graphics drivers. Nothing made the button work 100% like I would expect it to - able to switch at any given point (off course only when I'm not running gpu dependent programs).
I'll investigate more when I'll have more free time to waste. -
I have no problems at all (that I know of) with the button switching or the profiles. I can assign the GPU to different profiles and it always switches GPU, I can also use the button to turn the GPU on/off and it works fine in combination with profiles, e.g. I start in Performance mode where the GPU is on, I use the button to turn off the GPU, then I switch profiles to Entertainment where the GPU is also on and it turns on the GPU as it should. All of this survives reboots and hybernation.
I'm using PowerGear 1.24 and the 197.16 drivers. I'll give 1.34 a try and see what happens. -
I've got a few minutes here to give a quick impression and some ideas about the P4G Control, the Graphics "GraphiX Boost" Switch, and why it will "out of the blue for no reason" stop working...then by putting the computer into some "Stasis" state, ie Hibernation, Sleep, or Restarting, or going into BIOS and loading Manufacturer Defaults "Fixes" the problem, and like magic the GraphiX Boost Switch begins to work again.
I am not at my UL30VT-X1 right now, but I can tell you my experiences with this issue and how I've "fixed" the problem, and basically don't have it anymore.
My thoughts about the "vanishing switch" are many, but they boil down to having a conflict within the hardware and software of the computer which causes this phenomenon to occur. First of all, the GraphiX Switch in my UL30VT-X1 continues to function correctly, and I personally do not have this issue happening at all, it's virtually non-existent for my computer.
I think that the computer's software, of which there are several programs that actually interact with the GraphiX Switch, stops it from working when the nVidia Control Panel isn't loaded straight away many times. When people are working with battery power it seems to happen frequently also, so strike two for common conditions where this occurs. Others report that putting the computer to Sleep causes it to happen, when before Sleep it functioned fine.
My best guess as to why people continue to have this issue? Between the nVidia Control Panel, P4G Control Panel, and the Energy Settings in the Advanced section of the computers, it's my belief that there are basic conflicts between the various CP's and software that somehow "shuts off" the switch, and can also cause the nVidia CP to not load at all.
Before I did a clean install and got rid of everything I didn't want to have in the computer, both software, control panels, and Energy Saver settings, I would now and then have this issue crop up and my personal fix was to go into BIOS, load Manufacturer Defaults, Save & Exit, Restart the computer, and voila! The switch and the nVidia CP would magically appear, and all would be well once again. I still recommend this "fix" for others who have the problem happening now because it *does work*, and you'll get the CP and the GraphiX Switch back every time if you do that exercise.
The next time you start/restart the computer for any reason, all you have to do is go back into BIOS and select "Load User Defaults" to make things perfect with Fast Boot enabled, and every other setting that you have in the computer returns to normal also, opposed to Manufacturer Default settings.
That is all I have time for thinking about right now, but later I may have some other contributions to the thread regarding this problem, and how to stop it from happening permanently.
EDIT: Quickly here, it's not P4G CP 1.24 that is the "good one", it's 1.25 that's the GOOD ONE, so Mr. Wisse is perhaps using the wrong example in his messages above...most of us with experience with the P4G CP's are using v1.25 as I am, NOT 1.24! -
Well, I got my UL30VT-X1 back from Asus RMA up in Fremont, CA, and me being in Southern California it just took one day to get here via FedEx Express Saver shipping, which Asus uses for registered computers apparently, and man am I impressed!
1) It came back packed inside a larger packing box, with tons of air bladders and packing peanuts, totally protected during shipping, where I had sent it up in its OEM packing box, with the computer in the retail Asus box, with lots of special padding and packing *inside* the retail box to prevent any movement, so Kudos to Asus for their care in packing!
2) It's 100% spiffed up and detailed, every nook and cranny of the computer has been thoroughly cleaned and it looks like polished too (Piano Black finish everywhere and it shows it!), there wasn't a finger print or mark of any kind on the computer, so Kudos again for extra special care of the notebook!
3) It's fixed 100% perfect, and they didn't touch my HD installation, which I asked them to *not* do...the only thing they did was to turn off Smart Logon so they could use the password I provided (it's a doozy, some 21 characters and symbols, so I know they didn't like dealing with that!), but everything else was left "as it was" when I sent it in, so Kudos again, no Recovery of the HD!
4) They replaced the faulty memory, the OEM Hynix 2 x 2GB SODIMMs of 1066mhz SDRAM with, get this, 2 x 2GB of "Nanya" brand 1333Mhz SODIMMs SDRAM! So I got a 'silent upgrade' in the RAM department! I think I'll pass on reinstalling my 8GB of RAM for a couple days and run it with the new, faster 1333Mhz Nanya RAM in the slots and see if it can handle my workload, because faster is always better!
5) Total time elapsed for the shipping up, repair, and shipping back was just 5 business days! WOW! That is fast work! Thanks, Asus Tech in Fremont, CA, I will fill out their survey and give them all EXCELLENT marks when asked, this was an amazingly *GOOD* service experience, so YAAAY!
I just cannot get over the condition of my all 'Piano Black' Asus UL30VT-X1 notebook, I mean Asus really took care of business with it, didn't touch my software or any of my "special programs" (Like the overclocking to 1906Mhz program!), and I mean this thing looks better than new right now it's so cleaned up and spiffed up!
It is good to note their shipping practices also, because they could have just sent it Ground shipping, but nope! They used FedEx Express Saver, which is totally good shipping where they take special care of your merchandise, and get it to you quickly to boot!
I am stoked, Asus is a good company to work with! They did just what was necessary to do, and then detailed the heck out of this computer before packing it up for shipment back to me, and it just works a treat with that new 1333Mhz SDRAM in place.
Everest Ultimate says it has timing of 8-8-8-22-1T Clocks timing, so it's very nice SDRAM! I couldn't have asked for better for OEM RAM...never heard of "Nanya" brand, but what the Hay! I am happy with it, and the computer is a little quicker with it in there, notably, I am pleased to report.
That's just my status report tonight on this beautiful little UL30VT-X1 notebook, which is my favorite small notebook out of them all, it does everything so gosh darn well, and I love the switchable graphiX also, it just works so well in this computer once you dial it in with a clean install!
THANKS ASUS, YOU'RE MY FAVORITE COMPUTER COMPANY, BAR NONE!
-
Glad you got it back working..and clean. I was reading all the doom and gloom from RMA returns on the other threads.
Your ram should down clock to 1066? Lets us know if the new ram likes OC. -
Question for anyone using Virtual Box.
I'm about to setup an Ubuntu Guest OS on my UL30VT-A1 and was wondering what sort of results you guys were getting when running a like setup and dedicating say a gig of ram to the guest os? Does it run well, or could I dedicate less or should I dedicate more, but does it affect the windows 7 host os? Thanks! -
Thanks hydra, yes, it was great to get this baby back in one nice, polished and cleaned up, spiffed up black piece!
I love Asus Tech Service, Fremont, CA! They are The Man!
You're a sharp cookie about the SDRAM, also, as both Everest Ultimate and CPU-Z both say the RAM is down to 586.5 (587Mhz)Mhz from its lofty 1333Mhz capability, so good for that also! I was worried about the RAM being able to handle a 47% overclock (1906Mhz!), but it's a non-issue, things are working like a treat right now...this thing is rockin' and rollin' again, even with just 4GB of RAM on board for now, and I'm gonna leave it like that through Friday or Saturday, and see how it goes.
But yes, I am pleased 110% about this service, and how Asus conducted themselves, whichever tech worked on this one gets double Gold Stars!!
I left my new N71JQ-A1 at work tonight, just so I won't have to carry it back and forth, knowing this one arrived this afternoon here, so this is truly a pleasure to be using at home tonight for all the mundane and normal things you can use a computer like this for. I'm going to watch some Hulu video (The Dresden Files) in Full HD, just to test the waters a little with the new setup and HD video, so that should be fun for me also!
These are such neat notebooks...the design, the features, the size is perfect for toting about, and fast to boot, so it's got everything going for it. No wonder I'm keeping this little guy around, no matter what, and no wonder I bought the Square Trade 3-year ADW warranty to boot on it (got a great deal when it was new @ $116 and change, with a 40% discount coupon), just in case something awful happens to it within the next 3 years.
How are you liking yours now, hydra? Now that you've had it a couple weeks? I just get excited from using it, still, you know? KUHL machine!!
Well, it's off to Hulu Land for awhile, and we'll see how she plays.
-
Sorry, forgot to include this graphic showing RAM speed...and CPU speed...
My bad!
