I'm hoping someone can help me with an issue I'm having. I recently sent my G1s to Asus to fix the blank screen boot-up problem (I saw it mentioned only a page back) -- they replaced the motherboard, according to the sheet I got back with it. So I have my computer back, but now it seems very slow. Furthermore, nearly all of my games either run very slowly, are very buggy (i.e. text missing, some buttons have black squares around them), or don't run at all (particularly more recent games, such as Half-Life 2 and Portal).
I've tried calling tech-support, and I was told I should reload my OS by pressing F9 at the start-up screen. I tried doing that, but...well, see the attached image for the results of that endeavor. I don't have a CD to reload from, either.
Any ideas on how I can get my computer running like its old self (minus the blank screen issue, of course)? Is this a driver issue or something?

I remember that "error" screen being mentioned, but I do not remember how it was fixed...
One option would be to buy a standalone XP installation disk; but that will mean extra money. If you are a student/academic you may get it quite cheap from your university.
Are you quite sure you don't still have the recovery CDs/DVD lying around somewhere? You could also buy a new copy from ASUS, call them or check the eStore if you are in the US. -
Or just send it back.

help help,
I've upgraded (rather blindly) now that I think about it to 64 bit vista ult. everythings working EXCEPT wireless. I cant locate any wireless networks =( However, when plugged in everything works fine - bleh lol. Sorry for posting if this has been covered I've been trying to find something in the past 3 days but most of the threads are 2007 when talking about the G1 -
Did you try this driver?
-
WOOHOO IT WORKS!!
haha thanks ._. -
Since I'm here =) one more question. When I was running Vista 32-Bit and all original drivers I was getting a lot better frame rates now after 64bit (used nvidia driver that I found from nvidia's website) I'm getting less frame rates =\ what video driver are you guys using on your 64 vista?
-
If you're positive reloading the OS will fix the problem, I'll make that my goal.
-
Yay finally happened. My G1S black screen on boot. RMA time.
-
It makes me quite angry that it's only a mater of time till the 8600M GT fails. But nVidia is still selling these cards, even under different names.
-
My G1S Blackscreened on boot today. Still getting the "kaboom" sound but no video out. I take it the gpu is toast? Sending it in for repairs tomorrow after fighting them them on the phone.
Me: "My screen is black at boot and the week leading up to the problem I was getting massive artifacting in 3d games. I also tried to installed my OS before the black screen at boot but when faced with, "Press any key to boot from CD" I couldn't even read the simple text it was so ripped up.
Tech support: "You need to reinstall your OS with f9."
Me: "I get a black screen at boot, seems like my video out is shot."
Tech support: "We need to make sure it's not your OS."
Me: "Trust me this isn't my OS."
Repeat for about 30mins about how I needed to reinstall my OS before I gave up and told them I was try, only to call right back and get someone who knew that no video out = hardware problem. -
-
Well this sucks. No stock of the mainboard in the country so 2-3 week delay
-
ok i tried playing counter-strike source which my g1s-a1 plays really well at max settings but i can only play for like 5 minutes before the computer shuts down!! sometimes when im burning a dvd it shuts down too. there is no warning promt or anything it just turns completely off. also this happened when i play other games too. do you think its my vcard overheating? do you guys have the number to call so i can send it in if this is the case.
-
Just find out what's happening by yourself. Use RivaTuner to monitor the temps while playing, or read the OLED thread and use LCDHype and the megascript to monitor the temps on your OLED screen. -
i think you are right, i just installed nbprobe (don't know if that is any good...) and it kept making beeping sounds so i clicked on it and it said cpu temperature fatal and kept flashing red...
-
-
I'm almost certain this will improve your situation. -
guys thanks for all the suggestions but since im a n00b i am just sending it to asus they are going to fix everything so its all good
i hope they fix my screen to its damaged.

Hey. I'm new here. I've owned my Asus G1s for about a year and a half now, and am on the edge on whether or not I should try and upgrade it, or buy a whole new laptop.
I'm currently deployed to Al Asad, Iraq, and plan on building myself a nice desktop when I get back home but that won't be for atleast 6 months. So what i'm trying to decide, is whether or not I want to try and upgrade my G1s and let it ride me out the next 6 months, get home and build a really nice pc, buy a cheaper 17" gaming laptop (Gateway FX or Sager 5793) for around 1500, and use that to ride me out for the next 6 months, get home and build the nice desktop. Or should I totally splurge and buy myself a REALLY nice laptop for 3500+ (Sager 9262, etc) and not get a desktop when I get home.
I use my computer mostly for games, basic computer things like internet, etc, and want to get into some type of photo or video editing, and game design. I used to design levels for the unreal engine back in the UT days, and would like to get back into that, not necessary with that engine, but something.
Some games i'm planning on getting soon are, FSX, GTA:4, Crysis:Warhead, F.E.A.R. 2, Sims 3 when its released. Also I like the idea of going back up to a 17" screen from my 15, and having a 1920x1200 to watch Blu Rays on.
My concern is how much of a benefit am I going to see with each step. Staying where i'm at 2.0ghz, 2gb ram, 160gb, 8600gt 256, Vista 32 home vs putting 4gb ram, 320gb HDD, and Vista 64 ultimate vs getting a the cheaper laptop or splurging for the dream machine. How long would a 3700 notebook be good until I was ready to upgrade? -
I just got my G1S back from RMA and it has been changed to a G1SN motherboard as well.
The thing is they didn't replace the CPU compartment cover so it doesn't quite fit right with the new motherboard. Also the dummy card falls out like some other people mentioned already. Is there anyway to fix this?
No G1Sn recovery DVD either.
To top it all off there is a screw missing
One good thing about it is that they installed a new fan which is orders of magnitude quieter than the old one but they reused the old heatsink.
Oh well at least the stuttering problem should be gone, I haven't tested it yet though -
Probably call Asus and see if you can get the items from them. GL
-
i just got my g1s-a1 back too and they said that the MB was replaced too, how do i know if i got a g1sn one?
does the new bigger cpu cover on my notebook i just got back mean it has a new part?
sorry about the triple post but i do have the 9500m gs nowusing riva tuner what is a good number to oc to now?
-
-
guys i got another question my screen is really messed up and i want to buy a new one is there a better screen i can put into my g1s or do i have to get the same one and if so where can i get a new lcd screen
-
I would say that if you're a gamer it's best to get a desktop. Nowadays laptops are still behind desktops in GPU power and that's what matters most for gaming. -
anyone? i need a replacment screen any suggestions on where to buy?
-
thanks in advance -
hi there... anyone have the rmclock settings (or other program) for undervolting my G1S???? (G1S-AK074C-T7700,2GB RAM.... etc)
thanks in advance -
Edit: These are voltages for laptop, make sure you select "mobile" on Advanced CPU Settings -> CPU Type Selection (and restart RMClock)Attached Files:

i have use the profile "Performance on demand" and i have the cpu temp on 55°... a month ago i have read your guide for setting the oled...
you are a great man! -
Hello. I have a G2S-1A that I've been using for the last 1 and a half year and recently the monitor won't even turn on. I've had artifact issues for a while now with red and blue lines popping up occasionally and going away.
I've been reading. My screen remains black when I try to boot up, I hear the boom, but nothing else happens. This happened a few times yesterday and the day before but a few attempts of powering up fixed it. Now it seems I'm SOL.
I've talked to tech support and they've given me a RMA number. The thing is, they also mention that they will most likely just replace the motherboard.
I've read around and noticed that people who owns the G1S that had their motherboard replaced have gotten a newer version with the 9500m GT instead. I heard that it's slower due to the DRR2, has VRAM that it can't even physically use.
I live in the Markham area, and be going to the depot over at Cochrane.
Will my G2S-1A be getting the same motherboard?
If I am, is there anyway for me to argue for a better deal? I'm a gamer, I'm already experiencing less than stellar frame rates in games, I really don't like the idea of getting something 10% slower than something that I had originally paid for, especially due to defects out of my hands, since I don't even OC.
Is it possible to exchange this laptop for a newer model by paying the difference? What choices do I have?
Thanks! -
So after doing all of the following to my G1S-X1:
*taking it to 4GB RAm
*Installing Windows 7048 x64
*Drilling holes over the CPU cover
*removing the tape
*undervolting my T7300
*Overclocking my GPU
*montly dusting under the CPU panel
*Upgrading to Xtreme-G 182.06 video drivers
(I had to mod INF for mobile compatibility)
I got my 3DMark06 score to jump from a 3600 stock store to a whopping 4974! I suggest you all do the same. -
That is crazy! Congratulations. Any score 4k+ is respectable. This is with the 8600M, you didn't get it upgraded/replaced? Did you put thin filters where you drilled the holes to stop dust or just keep to a rigorous cleaning schedule?
-
I want to cut that hole out in the case right under the GPU but ThAT im kinda afraid to try... -
I got 5390...
-
Does the dust enter in the holes easily??!??!?!
maybe is more convenient only put off the black tape on the cover... no? -
After further inspection of my G1S, I have discovered that after being returned from warranty, Bluetooth is no longer working.
This is after a fresh format of vista and reinstall of the bluetooth drivers.
Anyone else find this? -
-
i would say this... http://es.asusxperts.com/asus-gamin...1s-parte-1-retirar-obstrucciones-de-aire.html
is that a better method?!?!?! -
Yes, everything on default settings, 1280x1024.

I was thinking of going upto a T9500, but I lost my job -
Is is a good idea to remove the black plastic sheets? Are there any negative consequences? -
Its an excellent idea. Did you not see my performance post the page before? Your hdd temps will rise, but not to dangerous levels if you undervolt.
But if you don't do something to offset the heat on the hdd, the temps can climb as high as 63c. The highest allowable operational temp is 59c. It will still work at 63c, but you're REALLY pushing it... -
I actually just did that today to my G1Sn. I mean, removed the black plastic of the RAM cover, thought more air could get near the GPU that way (I actually always thought those holes were really holes, can't think of a reason why they're blocked). Im not sure but having the cpu cover holes taped and the ram cover holes uncovered might've lowered my gpu temps a few degrees. It's still scorching ~93-95 still, though.
In my unit those CPU cover holes were not taped, but I taped them to lower hdd temps. I wasn't comfortable with 55+ with my new hdd. I'll remove them when I get a cooler. -
I've made an additional cooling to the GPU with a small fan and custom electronics ...I think I already posted the pictures on the forum. My GPU doesn't go above 92C and that's only on the most intensive games like GRID or Crysis. Call of Duty 4 with 125fps runs on 82-85C. You have to live with the fact that G1S has worst GPU cooling.. if you wanna play games on it for long (I do play almost everyday for 1-2 hours at least...have it for an year) you should consider buying external cooler or making your own GPU cooling you'll probably end up like most of the G1S users - RMA. Of course, opening the laptop voids the warranty, but I was not looking forward to use that warranty and I took my chances...plus service support in my country is awful
-
-
Bad cam quality, but you'll notice the metal grid next to the HDD.

This is the fan I used. The additional electronics is just a regulator that runs the fan very low when the CPU fan is not spinned up (when I'm not playing games). When CPU temp goes above 70C it starts increasing, on 76C and above runs the GPU fan on max speed. It could be done easier with couple of electronic parts, but since I'm hardware developer I preferred doing some additional controlling...I even have a LED on the controller board that blinks when the electronics detect temps above 70C -
Sounds like a good way to put my three semesters of circuit analysis and automatic controls to use... almost. It would be way too costly for me if I ed up...
