hey guys, i have a situation. a few months ago when my g1s was still under warranty, i got the GPU overheating problem (or something?) that many other g1s owners seem to have had. i RMAed and they told me they'd try to get me a replacement motherboard, but their shipment from taiwan was delayed and they ended up doing some "fix" on my existing motherboard. i didn't complain because it seemed to work just as fine as before when i got it back.

that was in March or April. now, i'm getting the same problem - when i try to play video games, along the way the screen will become terribly distorted and the colors will go haywire, and then it'll freeze. for now i'm trying to avoid playing video games because i'm pretty sure that if it happens a few more times, my laptop is going to completely die like last time and i haven't backed up my stuff yet.

i called Asus just now and the rep said no warranty, i'll have to pay. but this is the same problem i had a few months ago (when the laptop was still under warranty), and apparently they didn't fix it! am i wrong in believing that they should fix this, free of charge? i already got an RMA for the hell of it, but i'm considering calling again in the hopes of getting a better representative who will understand.

    Hey guys:

I have the G1s (obviously, as I would be posting elsewhere otherwise) and I have been using Windows 7 as my primary OS for some time now. I'm running the RC 7100 version at the moment and I have been having trouble activating the bluetooth chip the laptop comes with. I've tried to install the Vista 64-bit BT drivers, but so far it hasn't seemed to help.

Has anyone found a solution to this problem? Any info to this solution would be much appreciated.

    Vaz

:notworthy: omg, that was the easiest fix ever. I guess I should read the forums more often. I now have my speakers disconnected, and can still hear movie dialogue. I still don't like this laptop, but now I don't hate it as much.

My card just failed, again. I opted out of the G1Sn board as at the time it was apparent it was a slower board and they assured me that the mods they were doing to the bios would fix the problem.

Has anyone had any luck getting it repaired the second time, out of warranty without having to pay for it in full? I'm upset that my computer with a brand new mainboard has failed less than 2 years after being fixed...

I just called Asus about getting an RMA for my G1S. The GPU finally died giving me the dreaded black screen. I am 7 months out of warranty and hoping they will give me (or charge me only $250-300) for a G50VT-X6 since a 2.5 year lifespan for a very well taken care of laptop is ridiculous. I have to send it in to the Indiana location and wait for them to tell me something I already know, there are no replacement motherboards for the G1S anymore.

The thing that really annoys the hell out of me about this happening now is that I took preventative steps to reduce as much heat as possible. I used a Zalman cooling pad on high and a Thermaltake USB fan to suck the air out of the back of the G1S. With those two, I could game for hours and my internal fan never turned on high enough to make the really annoying high pitched whine common to the G1S. I hadn't gamed on my G1S for over a month when the GPU failed too. I guess I should have just let it die before the warranty ran out last November.

I am deploying soon and need something more than my EEE PC to keep me company so I am thinking about getting the G72JH-A1. I will make sure this time it finds a way for it to need replacing/fixed before the 2 year warranty is up if I spend $1500 on an Asus ever again.

Nathan P, I would try to RMA it again. I would tell them that the mods they did contributed to the failure which means they really never fixed it properly. It's kind of like applying a band-Aid to s bullet wound. The GPU line was defective and replacing the Motherboard wasn't going to fix it.

Any ideas on what I could sell my G1S for? I'm just curious as to what a fair asking price would be. I did have it fixed at the end of 2008 by Asus and has been fine since then. It's in perfect condition, everything works, only upgrade I did was upgrade to 3gb or ram.

    Thanks.

If it still has the 8600 in it no one in their right mind would buy it, so probably not much.

I got the first message back from the repair tech yesterday, they offered to replace the motherboard first. I replied that that wasn't acceptable and asked if a replacement was possible, and pointed to the customers here who got replacement laptops instead. We'll see what happens.

I was just contacted by the tech, she said that they can't change the model.

I replied, saying in effect that replacing with a known defective product is an unacceptable solution. We'll see how this goes...

Has anyone successfully installed more than 4GB of RAM on their G1S?

I managed to find one post online where a guy claims that he has installed (and his OS recognizes) 6GB of RAM...but all he posted was that he was running Windows 7 64-bit and I can't seem to find any more information on that...

Has anyone here tried to install more than 4GB?

EDIT - @himeee - Did you replace the CPU by itself? Was it a tough job?

Very simple job - did it yesterday on my G1Sn.

2 screws in the bottom panel, 4 screws holding the heatsink over the CPU, peel back the mylar between the fan housing and the heatsink radiator, remove the piping and radiator and the CPU is just there. There is a great manual somewhere in this forum that I found with pics and all.

anyone who still has a G1s (or hell a G1) wanna tell me what they idle at.

'cause I'm on my old Asus G1 right now and it likes to idle at 58-60 celsius (hdd gets up to that too) without this random notebook cooler.

The cooler drops it to 50 celsius. I also have cleaned it out recently with compressed air (but that's not really helping much).

so..just gonna guess the thermal pads and paste are kinda deteriorated. Not really able to replace 'em. Oh well, only on this guy again for a few weeks.

    Same here:

    Idle: 55C CPU, 60C GPU
    Load\Gaming: 85C CPU, 93C GPU

With cooler drops 4-5C on load, definitely makes a difference. Btw my cooler is some strange brand, but it has 3 small fans, which almost perfectly fit for it, 1 almost exactly beneath the plate of the G1S fan, one right under the GPU (where I made a custom GPU fan mod) and one on the HDD... I don't use it much recently, but in the summertime can't live without it. Maybe it's the thing that still keeps my G1S alive

that's about right. Actually pretty good. I think I used to hit 90C under load easily.

huh alright, guess that is just normal temps after owning the thing for 4+ years.

T7200s and Go 7700s get hot I guess.
