davidace: I see, it's probably what I should do, but I'm not that structured. Most of the commonly used software is installed and put there though.
Canarka: No, 32GB "specs" will render you 29.8 GB usable space and not 24GB, so that doesn't explain it.

I've deleted all but the 200 MB EFI system partition and the 25 GB recovery partition and naturally the large partition on the HDD.
In Windows Disk Management it says 29,82 GB NTFS.
Btw is there way to format the recovery partition? Windows Disk Management won't let me do it. -
My 1TB drive in my desktop is 931gb usable. My Crucial M4 64gig is 59.6gig usable. My 128gig Mushkin Chronos is 111gig usable. Check any computer and this holds true. This is how it always has worked.
Asus is putting in the same 32gig iSSD into these UX32VD's. If people are not ending up with 29.82 gigs of free space then I guarantee they didn't do something correctly; such as leaving a partition on the drive.
The 100 meg reserve is a system partition that contains boot files. Disk manager should not allow you to remove this partition if the PC currently needs files on it. Also, this could cause things such as Virtual machines to not function correctly as there are critical files located therein. I suggest leaving that alone. It's only 100megs. A much better idea would be disable hibernate, set a lower page file and move the windows/installer and windows/softwaredistribution folders to the HDD. This gave me lots of space. -
Canarka: I think I just misunderstood what you meant, I'm perfectly aware of the fact that a 32GB storage device will not render me 32GB usable space.
berserk_der_ueble and armchairneonslim says that they only got 22.37 GB usable SSD and a disk listed as Sandisk i100 24gb SSD, whereas it says the same but 32GB for me when looking at "hardware" under disk properties.
If all UX31A/UX32VD were shipped with 32GB ssd all should get 29,82 GB usable space and not 22 GB, right? -

Has anyone posted a guide of how to return to the stock setup? How would this process take place?
-
If I remember correctly, you could enter recovery mode by pressing F9 during boot-up on the UX31E.. I'm sure you'll find out if you google or check the ASUS site. -
I had a recovery partition "attached" to the HDD at 25GB. Just deleted it now.

I followed the instructions in this link Removing Windows 7 Recovery Partition | ITcookbook.net and it worked like a charm.
-
I've just got my UX32vd from Excalibur PC, and can confirm that the i100 SSD is a newer 24GB only one. Its even listed in hardware properties as SanDisk i100 SSD 24GB. Deleting all partitions will only give me 24GB no other way around about it. So it seems they made a slight change there and went for a cheaper one... Saving a 8GB ram chip in the process.

disregard.

I think I'm confused, on the 24GB - 32 GB thing. Do all UX32VDs (with the 1980x1080 display) ship with 32GB Hardware integrated drive, or are some now shipping with a 24GB hardware device. I'm asking about the hardware to get away from the confusion about available? space, etc.
I know that the 500GB HD is replaceable, but is the integrated SSD (32 or 24GB?) replaceable with something larger? -
As far as I understand people are actually getting iSSDs with a capacity of 24GB instead of 32GB.
What is funny is that my computer was listed by the retailer and Asus Norway (asus.no) as being shipped with 24GB SSD. Nonetheless, I got a 32GB SSD.
According to the PDF by Sandisk about their iSSD-drives it's available in sizes from 8GB to 128 GB but I doubt you can purchase these as a normal consumer and secondly I don't think you can replace it by yourself. -
When you make 1 big partition out of it, it's gonna be 29.8GB in size, for known reasons: 30,000,000,000 bytes = 29.8 x 1024 x 1024 x 1024. -

Same situation here, 24GB iSSD. I've completely formatted every disk before installing Windows 8, I'm quite sure there's nothing left.
By the way, has anyone got the brightness adjustment working properly in Windows 8? It seems to think the maximum brightness is higher than it actually is, so the top 40% of the slider doesn't do anything. More importantly, when adjusting the brightness via the fn-keys it'll hang when accidentally setting the brightness too high.
Any thoughts? -
-
I have bought UX32VD and it came with 24GB iSSD, I checked Disk managment and noticed 2 partitions, 18GB + 4GB partitions on this SSD, which means its exactly 22,37GB altogether, stands for 24GB version of iSSD

ASUS - Notebooks- ASUS ASUS ZENBOOK UX32VD
Are people from Europe also getting these 24 GB iSSDs, or only US people? -
I am from Europe(Slovakia), so its true
-
Hi,
I m from france paris and had a 32gb -

I am from Germany and at first got one with 32GB SSD. Due to a malfunctioning "Y"-Key I had to get it replaced. Now I "only" got the 24GB SSD version. So I believe it is just a matter of time until every new UX32VD will be shipped with 24GB SSD.
-
I am from Austria and I got also a 24gb ssd - shows up also as 24gb in bios. Its getting quite tight on it with the os, but with help of the junction.exe i can move some stuff to the 500gb hdd.

Yep, same in Finland. Specs say it's a 24gb but you might get 32gb still. This fan thing is really really annoying no matter what I do it doesn't stay silent more than one minute straight. I wonder if I missed some driver which might affect to fans behavior? Do you guys got the same problem or how are your fans working because I didn't know it's this bad. It would be completely ok if it just would stay on but the sound which it gives when fan(s?) turn off is very noticeable. I've got 06 BIOS version preinstalled and installed win 7 to on-board 32gb SSD. How many fans does ux32 got and do we know which one is the prob?
-
I'm from Finland and got my UX32VD on Monday, it had the 32gb iSSD, quite tempted to install the win7 on it.
-
looking at the videos the ux32vd r4002 has two fans. mine is very silent - also during gaming it stays acceptably quiet. my assumption then is that the ones who got the version with 24gb ssd got a model with improved thermal system. even if the fan enables itself it stays very silent.

I just installed a 256GB samsung 830 SSD and freshly installed Windows 7.
I installed all drivers etc. Since the fresh install I am also getting the fan problem. It runs way too fast for a couple of minutes even though the system is cool. Then its silent again, and some time later the process will repeat.
I'm thinking this is a driver issue because it happend after the fresh install. The original install did not have this issue. -
-
Just tried this - think I might have made a mess of it.
When I try to format the iSSD drive, it says it's not in NTFS mode. I am not able to use it - or format it with the Windows 7 USB installation drive.
Unfortunately I followed step 9 until I realized this - meaning I have no drives to install anything on now. Now what ? Is there a way to format the SSD drive - or the main drive - so that I can install Windows 7 and get back in action ?
Of course I did not make a back up of the original drive... -
30GB is way to small for me, i can reinstall on the regular drive, right?
Also, is there a way to disable the touchpad button touch functions?
Forget it, i'm returning this garbage. -
2. Yes.
That's too bad. Mine is perfect. -
The touchpad is just like apple garbage, doesn't work.
Too sensitive and the whole area is a trackpad, no side scrolling.
Keyboard is terrible and sticky, the screen is too small for the resolution, there's no numpad.. the list goes on.
No, i'll see if i can return this and get a better one. -
2. The screen being too small of a resolution is not really the fault of asus but merely your opinion. You can go to personalize and scale it 125 or 150% in windows, this will increase your useability quite a bit while still retaining your 1080p resolution. Maybe give this windows feature a shot?
3. No numpad is a pro to me. This is supposed to be an ultra portable notebook. To get a numpad you'd either have to make a much bigger notebook, or much smaller buttons (which you'd complain about then too lol)
But hey, it's your money and you can do with it what you want. For the price point, I couldn't find anything I liked more and I'm not willing to go to a crappy 1366x768 screen which leaves little options. -
Sure, but then i get less screen space.
Gotta get a big notebook, yeah. Alot of number entering.

nice text limit you've got here -
Just fixed this using Parted Magic. Fantastic tool - I'm going to give a donation.

I agree, awesome guide - and well worth the effort. The laptop just gets so much quicker, and you get rid of all the bloat. Thanks a bunch.

Hello, anyone can provide some help with installing from a USB stick a 64 bit windows professional edition ?
I have followed the guide perfectly up to the "boot from usb key"...
I have tried everything to boot from my USB stick, everything... I tried making the stick with windows 7 to usb official tool, I tried with wintoflash, I tried to boot in EFI mode with /boot/efi files...
No luck, everything I boot on the USB stick it says "Please insert a valid boot device..."
I have tried in cmd using bootsect.exe to make a bootsector on the USB manually => no succes either on my 32 bit win7 PC altough in cmd it says the bootsector update was a succes, nor from the UX32 that says bootsect can only be used with some kind of older bioses than EFI.
I am really desperate since you guys seem to install it without any problem, what the hell is going on ?
Is there any way to boot in the EFI shell ?? Why does the bios says there is no shell.efi available on the computer ?
Thanks. -
Ho dear kill me... All I had to do was to use the right side USB port with the usb stick... it does not work on the USB ports that is on the left and the backmost right one.
-
actually i've tried to install win7 home premium sp1 from my USB 4Gb and it worked perfectly. I'm now getting my UX32VD working so mooth with iSSD,
Except one thing related to this driver issue as attached screenshot and i might think i've lost the 6th driver: "MEI_Intel_Win7_64_Z8031427.zip"
Did u try to download it and can u share me if it's available at your pc now?
Tks a lot! -
Anyone experience issues where Windows won't see the sandisk drive?
I'm thinking my drive has just failed or is in the process of failing. I followed the guide, installed, worked great until now it appears the Windows install is corrupt on the UX32vd. I booted off the standard HDD and when I go to disk manager I no longer see the 32 GB sandisk drive listed.
Though it does still appear in the BIOS...very odd...
EDIT: But it does not appear when I boot off USB to install a new copy of Windows, though it of course appeared in the past as I used this to install Windows 7 to the drive. -
I dont seem to have the fan issue on my UX32vd, I installed a samsung ssd and upgraded the ram with the patriot 8b cl11. If I converte the on board issd so I can youse it will it at all mess witht he fan issue since it does some rapid start with that HD. Also, how cam I check if the ram is running at 1600mhz?
