Thank you for the great guide! Although my UX32VD has only the 24GB iSSD, I installed the OS on it. Now I have about 5GB left and a very fast system. But I have one problem: Following the guide I installed all drivers. Everything works ok except for one thing: My FN+F2 does not what it should do. It activates and deactivates Bluetooth immediately, but deactivates WLAN only after a restart. Once deactivated, I can not activate it using FN+F2. I have to use Windows 7 Pro troubleshouting, which says the internal switch is not activated. It activates it an then I can use WLAN normally. When I uninstall ATK Package, I can activate and deactivate WLAN and Bluetooth. But then all the other functions and OSD does not work. Has anyone experienced similar problems?

Uh, one more thing: I installed Wireless Console 3, but the latest version did not install and the version before did show some different OSD, but made no change to the behavior explained before. So I uninstalled it.

I have to add one more thing: I was not able to install the Intel WLAN driver from the toplevel exe. It says no suitable hardware found. I were only able to install the drivers and the tools using the separate installers in the two subfolders.

Intel Wifi drivers installed with setup.exe from the Install subdir, followed by ATK drivers followed by Wireless Console 3 is what is needed to get the fn+F2 function to work if I recall correctly.

Thanks. I tried, but I am not able to install the latest Wireless Console. The installer says "installation process was interrupted, please try again" after rolling back the installation progress bar.

I even tried to install Wireless Console 3 before installing ATK Package, but had the same results.

Are you sure the touch function can be disabled on the buttons?
I can't find anything about it anywhere.
I keep touching the buttons with one hand, while moving around on the touchpad with the other hand. And it counts as multitouch and does random things...

If you know how, it would be great if you can tell me :)

I'm not sure what you mean by touch function on buttons but if you mean disable the touchpad using the keyboard then you press fn+f9.

I have one hint for all Windows 7 installations on the integrated iSSD: Move the folder C:\Windows\Installer to the hdd and use mklink to make a softlink. Suppose you moved the folder to D:\Installer, the link should be set using a cmd like this: mklink /D C:\Windows\Installer D:\Installer. This saved me about 5GB on the iSSD.

Just wanted to let you know that win8 pro fits nicely on a 24gb ssd edition :) With 512-1g swap file and symlinked installer folder, i now have 8.8gb free space on the ssd after installing the few small tools i use :)

Thanks a lot for the guide.

Has anyone installed the Instant On Drivers and configured them with the os on the iSSD? I know, my UX32VD now starts very quickly from standby, but I like the idea of having 3 weeks of standby and a backup to hibernation when battery gets low.

Hi guys I have a question, I changed my hdd with an ssd and intstalled win7 on it, now I have the issd free and I tried to install win8 on it, but I received this error message error 0x80300024. I have the 32gb issd, so I'd like to know if is possible to install win8 in the issd in dual bot with win7.

    Thank you guys

I solved this problem installing windows 7 by physically removing the HDD until windows 7 was fully installed on the iSSD. I installed windows 7 on the 24GB iSSD and its working well.

I found the some suggest to other sites... So I have to unplug the ssd, install win 8 on the issd and after replug the ssd. Like this i'll have a dual bot? An other thing, I have win 7 on the ssd with gpt volume, how I have to format the issd to install win 8? I need another gpt ntfs partition or just an mbr?

Wait, how did you install 7 on anything without a master boot record? Well anyway, it seems like the iSSD can be touchy. I would install whatever you want on it with the 2.5 inch ssd/hdd removed. Then I would install the other os normally on the other drive. Both should work then, but you might not be able to take advantage of win 8's neato boot manager that can work across multiple drives.

Okay everyone, I am pretty happy with my setup as I have it right now.

I just got my UX32VD in the mail from Newegg yesterday, and unfortunately that was with a 24 GB iSSD with 22 usable.

I have a fully updated and running copy of windows 7 pro on the iSSD including all important drivers and some minor apps with 7.45 GB free. I think I did a pretty good job making windows smaller, I turned off the pagefile and hiberfile, turned off many windows services like Media Center and Media Player, moved windows/install over to the HDD and used mklink to join it to my windows folder. Something that doesn't seem to be totally stable is I also used mklink to move my C:\Temps to the F:\ (hdd) drive.

Now I am going to try installing Microsoft Security Essentials on the C: drive and then I will try this command

    dism /online /cleanup-image /spsuperseded

to clean up the windows update files. This folder bloats and that command will clean it up.

I think the guide should be updated to say that the 24gb iSSD is totally doable to install windows if you are careful. I love the fast boot times and lean windows.

Thats what I think. I would recommend everybody to do so. This thing is fast and I have nearly 8GB of free space, if I would delete my pagefile. But with the 4GB pagefile (autosize) it is even faster (I did not upgrade anything).

I just reinstated a 4gb pagefile because I had low memory errors. All of this is a band-aid until I can afford some corsair vengence ram and a proper fast ssd, but it's a pretty dang effective bandaid.

I got my UX32VD yesterday, installed Win 7 on the iSSD using your awesome guide. I'm leaving the HDD partitioning and contents intact since I don't need much storage space.
I also had a nice surprise: although the box said that the SSD has a capacity of 24 Gb, I got the version with 32 Gb.
The fans revving up after wake up is not annoying at all, they slow down after a short while.
All in all, a beautiful and powerful machine.

I your discrabtion and installed the clean system on a ssd. Now it runs like hell!
All drivers where installed direcly through windows, so there is no unknown device more.
What tool from asus do I need for switching the graficcards?
From starting up the system the led of F2 wont light even the wirless is on, a deactiving and activing of the wireless let it light up. anyway to solve this?

    anyone have any idea why

    dism /online /cleanup-image /spsuperseded

would not be working? At this point I have 1.06 GB left after reinstating a pagefile and letting windows update do its thing a few more times on my 24gb ssd. Trying to find some extra space somewhere

Jupp ... this will ONLY remove the SP1 files (no other update files), and this ONLY if you installed the SP1 seperatly. If you have a distribution including SP1, there is nothing to remove.

oh woops, I hadn't installed SP1 yet.

I don't think you are correct though. Here's what I did

    had 1.06 GB empty

    ran ccleaner

had 2.1 gb empty (I highly reccomend this cleanup app)

    installed SP1

    had 1.8 GB empty

    ran that command successfully

now i have 4.85 GB empty, so it must have cleaned up files from other updates too

The command will do exactly what it is made for (usually computers don't do random things when entering commands): Removing the (online) backup files made by SP1. These are usually 1.5GB, but may be more according to updates you made before and which are now part of the SP1. These backups are removes as well, as they are part of the SP1.

    Hi
I read your install on the ux32vd excellent.
I have the ux32vd and swaped out the hdd for an 240 ssd and installed windows 7, right now it does not show the 32gb ssd as a hard drive E when you look in the computer icon but it does show up in the manager. Will it make a difference that I have the windows 7 installed on the 240 g ssd or will it be faster if I load the os onto the 32 ssd? Also I will be updating to the new windows 8 is this a concern for the 32g ssd?
I do have a couple of more questions regarding the old hdd but I will send another email after I get this solved if that is ok with you. I love my new asus ux32vd.

I just wanted to say thank you. I used your guide, along with RT Se7en lite to install Win7 to my 24gb iSSD. I have Win7 installed, along with SP1 and every available update, my usual programs (chrome, utorrent, notepad++, couple SDK's, etc..) and still have about 10gb free on my ssd. I edited my registry to change my default install path to the Hitachi drive, so the OS and my core programs will run from the SSD and everything else is on my 500gb HDD. I really can't thank you enough. Boots up every bit as fast as my UX31a did (returned it for UX32VD). Thanks again!

Kronusx12 your post motivated me to try this on my 24GB SSD.
Can you tell us how you used RT Se7en lite? Did you run into any problems while installing to the 24GB SSD? And finally, is there anything else you did to conserve space? Thanks!

No issues honestly, didnt even need USB drivers or anything. I pretty much followed his direction exactly, except I used a smaller iso of win7. I started cutting it down myself and realized someone else was better at it than me. I actually ended up using this copy
    Download Windows 7 ULTIMATE SP1 x64 Lite(Updated-23June) Torrent - KickassTorrents
After install I deleted the hibernation file and made the page file lower (will delete page file completely when my 8gb ram gets here monday). Honestly, I have almost 10gb free and just install programs to the HDD. when I open a program it runs from the HDD, but otherwise the HDD doesn't even spin or anything. Boots are 10x as fast and everything runs super smooth. Sorry, it's late I hope I am making sense.
So here's pretty much what I did
    Downloaded torrent
    Followed directions in OP
Had to reformat Hitachi drive, for some reason If I tried to leave that partition, my SSD would not boot. So deleting and reformatting HDD seemed to be the answer.
    Install and let windows update
I then deleted hibernation files and set page file lower. this cleared up about 3gb or so.Hope this helped out somewhat.

    Super Guide!
I installed to UX32VD (with 32Gb) two weeks ago and just today installed on UX32A (24Gb) and it works just perfect! Actually it works a bit better on UX32A, as I have learned some tricks from first install.
I used Lite Ultimate as kronusx12 suggested.(I would prefer to use Home Premium Lite, but could not find it, and did not have time to make installer myself, maybe next time)
I have 10 Gb free on 24 Gb drive.

UX32A costs 750 EUR with tax (UX32VD 1100 EUR)- so you get super fast computer with LOW price. amazing!
I suggest that the option for UX32A should be added to the original message as well (not all the drivers needed).

After encountering every problem you can only imagine when trying to install Win7 on the ssd, here is how things went for me and the solutions i can approve:

First, no matter what, i could not get one of my three usb sticks to booable. I tinkered around with everything i could find and do still not really know how it worked in the end that a sandisk usb stick worked accidentally. If anyone has infos on the "bootsect" could not be executed thing, it would be much appreciated.

Second, i got the "A required CD/DVD device driver is missing" when i attempted to install Win7. This problem was solved, as one user mentioned, by setting the bios settings to "load optimal settings" or something. Don´t ask me why.

Third, when i wanted to install on the SSD (by the way, i think the Sandisk I100 are all 30gb, just splitted, so make sure to delete all the according partitions and make it one 30gb partition), i got error 0x80300024 and it wouldn´t install. I solved it by setting the boot priority to ssd drive first, then the usb drive. Other users mentioned they just removed the hdd for the install, but i don´t know if you lose warranty this way.

Here you go guys, thanks for the help, I felt like giving some back. This was the longest installation of an OS ever. But damn this little charm is quick now, so it is well worth it. By the way, i have the UX32A.

    Cheers

    Andreas

There are clearly two different versions- earlier ones are with 32 gb and newer ones are with 24gb. as you see from my previous post, I have used both versions. And yes, you have to delete all partitions (you get ~30 or ~22,5 usable still)...

    Hi all
    I love my ultrabook
see what Ive done so far
-Ive backuped my drivers and license key from orginal windows 7
-Ive converted my SSD GPT to MBR with windows dos
-Ive installed windows 7 with dummy user profile
-Ive change on regedit my local profile to move on other Drive d: using the following key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\WINDOWS NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList.
-Ive created a new profile , and now my user profile is located on my D drive
    _Ive reinstalled all the driver
-I ve install and tweak my SSD and windows using SSDtweaker
-Ive redefined my page file to match with my SDD
I ve finally installed tuneup utilities + eset
and now it rocks, ssd 24go with only 10go used for windows 7 all my profile are stored on my D drive it safe me a lot of space

Yes the ux32vd is the good deal

Ok everything else is perfect but the fans are REALLY annoying. Mine are almost non stop on and off. Turn on, turn off, 1 sec later, turn on, turn off, etc. Have we really established that the ultrabook with factory settings has the same problem? I would guess if that was the case that ASUS would've done something about it already. Are we sure it is not the fault of the OS running on the SSD?

Have you installed the latest bios version? I think it is 206. Mine is completely silent during normal work and videos.

Strange thing about the I100, same name but different specs? Strange!

    Hey guys,

Can anyone confirm that their integrated/built-in microphone works. I tried the asus drivers and even realtek but it doesn't show up in my list of recording devices.

    Please let me know.

    thanks for the guide. Helpful.
Initially I had the same problem with the fans that everyone is talking about. 206 bios uptade helped a little, then solved it completely by instaliing all of the windows updates available. Fans are now quiet.
Now ran into another problem - windows installation is taking about 20 gigs, after installing essential programs i'm left with only 4 gb free. (that is after disabling hibernation, pagefile, turning off system restore and recycle bin). Anyone knows a way to shrink the windows installation safely?

First, thanks for the excellent guide.

I just bought a Zenbook, the entry level model (ux32a-db31) and it come with the 32gb SSD (despite being spec'ed at 24gb).

Installing Win 7 on it as I type from desktop. Going to add an 8gb ram stick and see how it performs.

So far, very impressed for the price point (sub $700).

As SSD prices continue to fall, probably add a 256gb SSD to replace the 320gb HDD installed.

How do you plan to install additional RAM and SSD when you can't even access it?

Also what SSD size does the UX32A use?

Hey guys! I bought yesterday my UX32VD-R4002 and it is now running Win7 in the SSD!
    Thankyou man!!

Just to inform, I had two bizars problems:

    1) Couldnt delete one partition of the SSD entering in the Windows Disk Management by "Computer; Managing; Disk Management". I had to enter by the Control Pannel..

    2) After spending one hour trying to figure it out, I solved the "'A required CD/DVD drive device driver is missing..." by changing the USB pendrive from the right port to the LEFT! Just that...

I bought on France and have the 24GB disk.

Anyone have tips about partition the Hitachi?

    Thanks again!

    Dunces,

An interesting guide, thank you for this work, especially for maintaining it. I ran into a couple of questions, please:

    (1) You suggest changing the boot volume from GPT to MBR. I am not an expert, but I take it from various internet sources that GPT is an improvement to MBR and is compatible with Win 7+. Are you sure you cant install Win7 on a GPT? Any source to read more on this that you might suggest?

    (2) Do you know how to install Win7, keeping the boot loader at the existing hidden EFI partition? (I am looking at installing a fresh Win on my UX31A which has 128Gb SSD as the only drive.

Thank you if you may find some time to look at this.
