Wow I need all these tools just to screw the original heatsink down into 4 threaded bolts? There is no way I will be able to do this

I still want to use the original C90P heatsink and the original screws. I just want to be able to attach the heatsink without using the original backplate/countersink. Surely the right size threaded bolt x 4 fed snugly through the 4 holes and then bolted to the card somehow should work no?

Could you give me a guide on just to do that. Remember the heatsink already fits perfectly. All I need to know is what you used by way of screws/bolts etc

    Atvaark

I assume from reading your post that turbogear extreme didn't give you any additional OC benefits. As for the Q7600 it would certainly work in the C90P and I reckon almost just a certainly in the C90S. For me part I prefer to have 12mb lvl2 cache :D 4.3ghz would be unattainable in either laptop. Such clocks could only be achieved in a desktop with the best air cooling and perhaps even borderline watercooling lol

considering i'm stuck with the c90S, i unfortunately don't have the luxury of a 1333Mhz bus...otherwise i'd have that little Q9650 in it as well.
i guess i could slam the q6600 in there instead. but again rises the problem of the power supply. i only have a 120W. and i couldn't find a 180 made for the c90. new heat issue would be welcome in fact. get those damn fans working a bit to keep the cpu cool means the gpu would be refreshed as well.

I have a 150W Power Supply that originally came with my C90P. I can sell it to you if you like. I now have a 180W one. Mind you however the Q6600 may not work in the C90S due to some kind of bios limitation. Also I must warn you of the heat. The Q9650 is also 95W and the temps reach almost 80C before leveling out, if it exceeds this temp it will auto throttle. The fans don't seem to react as early as they did with my old E6600. I was thinking of swapping out the fans for the faster 11,000 rpm model but that would involve $10 per fan and the need to buy the necessary solding equipment and a steady hand lol to install them.

I think for now I will lap the Q9650 but not until I get my 4670 card :) If you get a quad I probably will recommend you to lap it.

    Hey, thanks for your questions.

    K) “As for fastening the heatsink to the card to you just use a simple threaded bolt or what?”
    A) The answer is in front of your eyes. Please look at the picture carefully:

You can think about all holes with numbers as nuts. Holes 1-2-3-4 are used to attach the video adapter to the heatsink. If you look at closer you’ll see part of threads and black ends of the screws. All holes are drilled with a drill 2.05 mm (.0807") and next a tap M2.5 x .45 mm for the thread.

    Heatsink:

    K) “If you could give me the exact links to both the exact screw model and bolt you used …”
    A) Here you are the links to the screw (M2.5 x 6 mm) and tools you needed to make the holes:

    Socket Cap Screw M2.5 x 6 mm:

    K) “About that spare 8600M GT I would be interested. …”
    A) It is my way to say thanks to Atvaark who asked Asus the right questions. I hope soon you’ll receive your “ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4670 512MB GDDR3".

    @toaster_54
    Hey, toaster_54!

It would be good if you post some pictures of your work. Can you say from where did you get 770M?

    @Atvaark
    Hey, Atvaark!

Atvaark) “…since the chances of me making your mod rather slim,(lack of tools) tell me if you ever think of building more sets, …”
    A) I’m so sorry to hear that because I haven’t enough time to make more sets. I would like to say thanks again Atvaark!

    @evala
    Hey, Evala!
    Thank you for the questions.

    E) “… could you tell the score of hd3650 in 3dmark05/06, …”
    A) The 3DMark’06’s score of “ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3650 512MB DDR2” is 3623.

    E) “Related to cooper pads, is it the height distance between the GPU and MEM chips only 0.8mm?”
    A) I can’t measure exactly that clearance.

I have two “ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3650 512MB DDR2” and the thickness of copper’s memory pads is different for every one of them. The reason for that is called tolerance. Every component (PCB, GPU, Memory chips. heatsink) and process (wave solder process, our actions) they have its own tolerances. That’s why I used for memory pads two copper’s sheets with thicknesses 1/32” (0.79375 mm) and 0.032” (0.8128 mm). In my case I filed 0.005 mm ~ 0.010 mm. Then I used thermal compound Noctua NT-H1 from both sides of the pads. Most manufactures use regular thermal pads because it’s fast and easy way to deal with the tolerances.

    @brehidran
    Hey!

    B) “I think there is still a small clearance between the pads and the RAM and Heatsink. Can this < .5 mm space be gapped by thermal compound on both sides?”
    A) Yes, you can do that. In my opinion 0.5 mm is still big clearance. My suggestion is to check it in this way:
    • 1) Put a drop of thermal compound on all 4 memory chips.
    • 2) Firmly press copper’s memory pads over the chips.
    • 3) Attach the heatsink to the video card.
    • 4) With a tooth stick try to push every pad gently. If someone of them slips freely then you needed more thickness.
Some compounds are dangerous if you are not careful (e.g. Arctic Silver 5 – slight electrical conductivity).

    B) “I got 2mm THK Nylon spacers. How did you get 1.7mm spacers? by filing them down?”
    A) Yes! I used a diamond file for that job. Here you are my file and spacers:

Metric Aluminum Unthreaded Round Spacer, 6mm Od, 2mm Length, M3
    [IMG]

Standard Diamond Hand File, Flat, Medium (120) Grit, 0.25" Width

i figured out why i was having such extreme temperatures...
what i bought believing it was iC diamond 24 paste, was in fact a scam. it was plaster. indeed, i ran out of it while trying different ways to apply it, and it was really hell to remove. so i put back some arctic silver paste instead while i was going to order some more and behold! my temps never rose above 81 degrees...
i didn't save the seller back then, but it was from hong kong. be careful where you buy your paste. ebay ain't so safe after all.
if i could find who it was...i'd report his sorry behind.
wow. i paid 40 bucks for something that could have destroyed my system.
anyone can direct me towards a real tube of ic 24 diamond paste?

    Hi,

I'm using a Zalman Notebook cooler NC2000 and TurboGear V1.01.07. It works on O/C mod @ 3.19 Ghz. I succeed with Crystal Cpuiz to go at 3.32 Ghz, but i didn't try again.

Something interesting : I succed with the same configuration but with the original 2 Go DDR2, and i reached 7049 pts ! :D
    I have a problem : i can't put my 770M more than 1600 on shaders because i got artefacts.

I will try this weekend because i'm quiet busy with projects reports and presentations and... the TOEIC !

I hope that i will be able to reach 3.4 Ghz on CPU. I would like to know if i can overvolt the GPU... is it dangerous ? Set at 1,07V could be pemit to reach 1700 on shaders ?

Well overvolt the card is dangerous as it is play with its BIOS, you could always reestore it, but the main thing is that you will get higher temps. Even with the same clock rates...
That means a lot of extra temp if you overclock more the card.
Question; that score is with w32 or 64?? And forceware version?
    Cheers

    Hi,

I'm using ClockGen to tweak the FSB.

There is a barrier which is difficult to go over : FSB 297 mhz.
jaybee83 has found how to do by tweaking the PCIE : http://forum.notebookreview.com/showpost.php?p=4667384&postcount=12
But I won't try to do the same thing, I want to keep my C90S for a long time, I hope so.

But if TurboGear go higher than 297 fsb, that means it tweaks PCIE at the same time.

    I've just perform a 3dmark06 test, with fsb 296mhz=>3.256ghz, I got 6811 .
All other settings were the same when I got 6763.

I never tried to tweak any voltage setting,
Remember, the C90S is a notebook, not a desktop.

    @+ ;)

Good job in your OCing efforts and congrats on breaking the 7000K barrier. Until I get my 4670 you have the crown for most powerful C90 :) It looks like the E7400 is the best processor to buy for the C90S.

Try and reach 3.4ghz but make sure you check temps all the time when stress testing and expect the odd blue screen or crash :D As for the GPU you won't be able to change the voltages even with a vbios mod via nibitor. It might let you but the change won't actually happen physically.

How does this the 770M perform in games btw? I know it is not supposed to be a "gaming" card like the 9600M GT so would be interesting to know how it performs.

Well I haven't noticed that, I undervolted my 9600m GT, with the card OCed, and windows xp was unable to boot, perhaps it was an unlucky freeze?
anyway as I said, I wouldn't overvolt a graphic card in a laptop.

Hey peeps I just ordered 4 new fans for my C90. The Delta AFB0412SHB 11,000 RPM fans.

Our current fans are the AFB0412VHB 9,500 RPM fans so am hoping for some speed increases :) My thinking is that the bios incrementally ramps up the speed of the fans as the temp increases. With a higher stated max rpm at each ramp up, the fans should be running faster than our current model, which also means better cooling.

Will give an update once I have em installed! Potential for some big cooling improvements here, especially if people do what I did and stick a quad in the Q9650 for the C90P or the Q7600 for the C90S. Not to mention it will also improve the cooling of the GPU.

    To buy the fans visit:
    http://www.futureelectronics.com/en...management/fans/Pages/1441971-AFB0412SHB.aspx

They ship to many countries all over the world and if you select your own country the website will change the currency to your own. Also because the part is such a low demand part there is a back order on it so expect it to take several weeks to arrive.

Yes, I succeed to go @ 298 Fsb without any modification of Pcie.

Turbo Gear is modifying PCIE : Here are the different frequency in O/C mod :

    FSB / RAM / PCIE / PCI = 318,7 / 637,4 / 112 / 37,3.

I succeed to reach 7109 pts @325 Fsb (With ClockGen) : It's only 50 points on 3D marks more. I think i will stay with O/C mod with Turbo Gear @ 318.7 Fsb, and i will work this weekend on 770M frequencies. ;)

Hey man is 325mhz your max stable fsb?
That is mighty impressive!! That practically at 1333mhz complete fsb :D which is stock fsb of the P35 chipset in my C90P :)

Also have you tried using Crystal cpuid to force the processor up to its full 10.5x multi?

Well, It is stable @325 Fsb, but i can't put @ 10,5x, even at stock clocks, i got bluescreens ;)

    I cant imagine with a 7500 @ 11X multi. It should be amazing !

    770M = 9600M gt , it's G96.

I shouldn't bother if I were you. It seems obvious that the C90S is far happier with a 10x rather than an 11x multi. Remember with your "slower" CPU you are actually matching everybodies E7500 clock for clock while boosting a higher fsb. It basically means you have the superior processor.

My suggestion is to look at the Q7xxx series especially the 65W parts if you want to upgrade the CPU department again. A 4ghz Q7600S anybody :D

edit: I just looked at google and it seems intel have withdrawn that line of quads :( seemingly in favour of those i3's and i5's

    Hi King,

I choose to keep the PCIE as it is, so my E7500 can't go higher than fsb 297mhz.

However, at the moment, I tried to increase PCIE up to 112 , with ClockGen => yes it works.
    Then I increased FSB to 312 => CPU = 3.432.
    I tried fsb at 318,7 as toaster_54 => BSOD.

So I think the limit OC of my E7500 is between FSB 312 and 318.

I didnt perform any 3dmark test, or other.

So the E7500 is not a so bad choice, is it ?

    @+ ;)

Try 3D06 @ 3.432 Ghz ;) . I think that Turbo Gear is fixing rated Fsb in O/C mod @ 1275 Mhz, even on an E6600.

In my opinion, i will keep turboGear @ 318.7 because it allows me to manage the power of my laptop (for example put it in power saving mod) and also because the bonus point on 3D06 was not so significant with a higher overclocking.

9800xpv, try with TurboGear, no ?

I'm think that if i had an E7500 i could manage to reach 7200 pts.

Ah the PCIE trick. Yeah I wouldn't ever touch it. I tried that with the C90S and E7500 and found yes I could get higher clock speeds but with higher pcie frequencies the GPU will no longer be stable with an overclock. If you downclock the PCIE it has the opposite effect allowing a higher stable GPU clock but lower CPU. In other words no point changing it.

    Hi toaster,

    About TurboGear :
It works on your C90S because [email protected] is under the 2.9ghz limit of TG. So you may OC.
On my C90S with [email protected], TG don't give any OC. I have only the standard and the saving modes, no gaming, no turbo mode.
I'm just 0.03ghz above its limit.

And it seems your E7400 is better than my E7500 in OC. You can go higher in frequency.

For the moment I must go out,
    see you later,

    @+ ;)

I'm happy to see this unit is still receiving that much attention :) Used to be the main point of interest in this Asus board.

    And 9800xpv: Very nice 3dmark score :)

@King of Interns: Fans' voltage is controlled by CPU temp (thus why heavy GPU overheat on low-temperature CPUs such as my E4500 (compared to the original E6700/X6800 design)). As long as your new fans have higher RPM/voltage, it should do the job :)

    Hello,
I spent a complete afternoon on some simulations.
    My C90S :
    E7400
    2 Go DDR2 667
    HDD 160 Go 5400 rpm
    Nvidia 770M 512 DDR3 (G96 approx an 9600M GT)
    NO Voltmod

All of these results are obtained from some simulations without any artefacts. Here are the results :

NO PCIE Tweak (103 PCIE) – 85°C max on GPU :

    CPU : 2,93 Ghz (297,5 x 10)
    GPU : 640/950/1650
    3D06 : 6652 pts (SM 2.0 : 2832 / SM 3.0 : 2547 / CPU : 2509)

    CPU : 3,123 Ghz (297,5 x 10,5)

very nice work. i can't wait to have real control over the frequencies of my video card. i intend to lower it's clocks to a 9600 equivalent. I'm probably going to get a bit less heat that way, and still get some decent power. it's too dangerous to stay at 107 degrees at full power. Granted, i was using a counterfeit paste... i usually lock it back with the original bios when I'm not doing anything huge. toaster, your tests make me green with envy.

and some interesting news. i managed to get my hands on a used Q7500.
you know what that means, right? I'll receive it within the month.
sure, the loss of another 1Mb of cache hurts, but if the overclock i can manage is high enough, it can probably compensate. plus, it is a quad-core...

Wow where did you find it?? I can't find any Q7xxx for sale anywhere and it seems intel pulled it from their processor lists.

Is it 95W or 65W tdp?

It will definitely compensate for the loss of 1mb lvl 2 cache. I look forward to your tests with relish :) Gotta love the C90 :D

Also people there is a 770M for sale on the british ebay for £150.

Hey toaster is your 770M stable at 750/1000/1750 ? Those are huge clocks! If so it seems nvidia used slightly better silicon and components on it than the 9600M GT. Oh yeah and try and reach 2000 on the shaders :)

Yes it is stable, but i'm on maximum O/C on this card ;) . I tried on 1770, and i got artefacts... I put the shaders on 1700 to be sure about artifacts.

Well, i'm looking for any software which is able to fix frequencies like clockgen but directly...i mean for example i would like to do it at windows startup directly, like TurboGear. Do you know some softwares able to do that ?

    Thanks ;)

I'm think that if you have E7500 + 9600MGT, Keep it, it should be as powerful as my configuration. Note that i got more performance with only 2Go. If you want to change your 3D, change for a new card. The 770M equals a 9600M GT. I suggest you to find 4650 DDR3 or 4670. It should be definitevely a better choice ;)

Well as our forum mates said, it seems to be more OCable the E7400 than E7500, we can't use TG and by my side I can't go away of 3,3Ghz not even by tweking the pcie, I got BSOD. Anyway I'm quite happy with my system, and I had to downclock my shaders, I spected some blackscreens...
Now i'm abaut 6400 3dm06...If series Q7xxx are finaly launched I will think abaut get one, by now better start saving for a new G6 or alienware. Lol
    see you

i got it off a canadian french auction site called Lespac. it was part of a dell machine that went KO about 8 months ago. it died a month after the guy bought it because of an electrical surge, but the cpu was still ok. it busted his video card, which was onboard and 1 of his ram bars. his warranty did not cover that. so he just salvaged what he could from it and the cpu was one thing in it. that's what he wrote in the add resume.

Fair enough. That is pretty darn cool. I can imagine you will be getting it pretty cheap too :) I do feel sorry for the guy though. That will teach him to get surge protection lol

this is really impressive ! where did u buy the 770m ? is this plug and play or do we have to modify the bios, heatsink ? etc. etc. ? thanks for trying this and setting a precedent and giving us something better for our c90s...

    I bought 770M on Ebay 2 months ago from taiwan. I started with a modded heatsink from 8600M GT (a little use of sew). I got temperatures @ 98 - 105 °C...with a notebookcooler @ 650/900/1600.

It's Plug and play, just need a flash bios to get the right frequencies : get bios from 3D card with GPU-Z then modify it with nibitor and finally put it with Nvflash.

Actually, this card seems come from HP support (it's write HP support on it...) and it's used in 8510W.

After the installation of C90P heatsink (GPU, CPU, motherboard chipset), i reached maximum temperature of 90°C in O/C mod.

Next step for me will be maybe the installation of C90P motherboard (if i can find it at reasonnable price). I'm quite sure that i will buy another 3D graphic card in some months.

Maybe some of us will be able to reach 10 000 points on C90...

Looking at the 770M I can imagine it fits the C90P heatsink without any modification needed. Is this correct toaster?

I think 10,000 points is impossible lol but would be lovely :D Even by putting a Q9650 in my C90P I only got an increase of about 400-500 points in 3dmark06 over my E6600 clocked at 3.15ghz. I think with a quad such as the Q7500 that advaark managed to purchase and a 770M the likely best card that is readily available somewhere between 7500-7750 is achievable :)

Still an amazing score. Another thing tis awesome that is was plug and play unlike the 9600M GT bios wise. Here's to hoping that the 4670 will be the same. Then I shall try to chase at least 9,000 points :D

Or just whack the 8600M GT backplate onto it and voila sorted :)

No, because the diameter from the 770M backplate is different from the 8600M backplate.

Since my friend bought a new G6 series from asus and got 11k 3dm06 at stock clocks, with a 260X and i5 (2,8 ghz i guess), then I just see impossible get 10k with the C90S, I think we need an MXM III for that goal.
    Perhaps 9k??
    Good luck gs...
Ps- g6 series test 3dm06 at 1366x768 its max res.
Ps2 - could we use a led screen? That would be a significant power saving, rigth?

Lol a led screen. That could be possibility but then would you really want to say goodbye to the wonderful screen we already have. I can't think of a better laptop screen even the newfangled led ones. Crisp but not too bright, with a mixture between shiny and matte :) I was thinking about mxm III such as the 3870 card but I think that the CPU socket would get in the way of the card due to its larger size. 9K could be possible but really on outer limits of possible hehe

Be careful, our tests are made under 1280x1024, not 1366x768, maybe it could be different ?

Right, I know thats why I mentioned it. There's abaut 400 pts GAP from 1366 to 1280 res.

    @King

I wish you see that screen. It's brighter than ours, thiner but the lower res.
That is a cost I would take in favor of battery life. Think that we can't play newest games at top resolution.

    Cheers

Fair enuff. However we can pretty much watch full HD 1080p movies on it. It will only scale down a little from 1980 to 1680 and 1080 to 1050. I dunno bout you but blue ray is also getting cheaper meaning that could be another possible upgrade path in the future :) I intend to eventually (when prices drop to £50 for one haha) :D

As for battery I can't imagine it will improve battery that much maybe 5-10 minutes longer tops. So 1.45 or so for the C90S or for mine 1.15 lol

I understand that point but the true is I think I never used my c90 for multimedia support, I use my PS3 and my C90 for gaming...lol!
Sometimes I must work out, and every minute extra is blessed, so I think a led screen and an SSD would be great.
By my side there's no point for install a BDD so as I said I use the PS3...perhaps when BDRW are cheap enought...
Anyway performance and bat life are opossite points, I preffer performance course...I'm just upgrading if Q7xxx shows up, and perhaps those ati 4xxx...
    Thank you.

I'm thinking about watercooling for CPU and GPU (+ GPU memory). Some has already tried to watercooled a c90 or a notebook ?

In my opinion that wouldn't worth it.
You can't install the whole system in the notebook. And that means to lose the "mobile" side of your notebook. Think that you need the radiator, the water pump, the water tank, the pipes, and course the custom heatsinks...

All that means a lot of extra space, weight and work. I just can't imagine that, even if you could fit the 12v. Pump on the fans place, and remove the backdoor (or make a custom one), and fit the tank, the radiator wouldn't fit, and the pipes probably were to shor for its work.

Perhaps you could make a kind of cooling pad water cooled, and perhaps you could remove the backdoor and fit the pad with the CPU/GPU heatsinks. Thats my opinion.

    What do you think?
    Good luck!
