anyone have any info on battery life?
and the mobile 7600GT is slightly better than the desktop 6800GT right?
I think this is the first smaller laptop i have seen with a decent graphics card....
also on the general info page it says..
The latest 3D processing Power
Incorporated with the NVidia GeForce Go7800 A8Jm delivers stunning, true-to-life visuals, incredibly smooth video playback and exceptional graphics performance—from personal video recording and high definition TV, to enthusiast-level gaming.
but on the specs page...
Video Graphics & Memory NVidia GeForce Go7600 512MB
I am guessing its just a typo...
http://usa.asus.com/products4.aspx?modelmenu=1&model=1095&l1=5&l2=61&l3=0
is pricing posted anywhere?
keep seeing e1505 deals posted everywhere, but the graphics card in the e1505 sucks the notebook overall looks sort of bulky and ugly... not to mention the issues people are having with the system locking up after opening and closing the screen a few times.
I trust ASUS WAY more than dell too...
anyways, this looks like a sweet laptop.

Battery life with these machines is usually 3-4 hours depending on usage... you can't really ask for any more out of it! With undervolting (whenever possible), you could probably squeeze 4+ hours.
-
If the 7600 is about on par with the x1600 which it is supposed to be then no. It won't perform quite as well as 6800 GT but it will perform about as welll as a 6800 go from what I've seen.
Err nevermind, I don't know anything about the 7600 GT *shrugs* are you sure its a GT? -
the video card in the A8JM is a go7600. NOT a go7600GT

um, the 7600 is not in many notebooks, actually this is the first notebook i have seen with it.
To compare batterylife. You can take the V6v versus the V6J and then compare the V6va too.
From there you can estimate the batterylife of 7600 in the A8j.
Hope this helps.
Thanks,

Any more news on the A8j? Seems Nexus in the UK is supplying it now. However any more reviews?
Thanks -
Yeah. I have noticed that dealers in Australia are already taking pre-orders for them.
When they coming to the US? Barebones? -
-
The W2j's are on the same shipment as the W3j
-
-
I think its horrible that nforce motherboards almost pretty much dominate the desktop motherboard scene, yet nvidia cant release a chipset for the pentium-duo-core or even turion.
I remember that they did have the nforce3 series of chipsets for the initial AMD64 Desktop Series processors. But those were huge and outrageously bad with batteries.
However I dont mind waiting for the A8JM. However I hope more options come up by august, especially with the Merom release and the released Turion X2.
If nothing comes up by then, A8JM it is. -
Whats up with the Asus site saying the A8jm comes with a 7800? Typo?
http://usa.asus.com/products4.aspx?l1=5&l2=61&l3=0&model=1095&modelmenu=1 -
7800 would probably be overkill on a wxga screen anyway. -
wondering if any one has more US specs??
is the barebones version happening? is it coming with the WXGA LCD or WXGA+? -
justin @proportable said the a8jm's are in the same shipment with the w3js but the US specs hasn't been released yet i presume.
i guess this maybe the closest specs to the US release perhaps.
also, it maybe a ensemble version.

um... i think it's better if u look at the site without it being translated lol -
want to see the barebones version. the Z62J looks like the A8JM minus the 7600go -
Agh, I hope it meets my battery life requirements. I've already been turned off a whole bunch of PCs because of poor performing batteries.
But then again, I hear ATI's laptop vid chips take more power than nVidia's. Is there any validity in that statement? -
a8j has officially arrived in singapore, yesterday.
built pretty decently.
asus is still consistent with their built quality
i did some handphone pics.. but they all turned out pretty bad.
-
I want one now!
-
even if they're bad, can u still post them? get some singapore specs as well?
-
Specs! yeah!
is it a built-on or ensemble?
how much RAM on the 7600?
how does the screen compare to the w3j's? -
Intel Duo Core T2400
1GB DDR2-533
100GB 5400rpm
512MB go7600
14" Glossy Bright either WXGA (1280x800) or WXGA+ (1440x900)
USB 2.0s
Firewire
DVD-+DL
The A8JM will be the ensemble. There is speculation that there will be a built on version of this laptop. However Im not sure if the 512 go 7600 wlil be included in it.
The Screen should be the same/similar. The W3J is a 14.1" widescreen laptop too. I think the A8Jm might have the higher resolution though. -
Isn't the A8j coming with 2gb of ddr2? That's what i've been seeing/reading till now.
-
oopsy. was away for the weekend.. will post some erm.. the 'p[retty bad pictures' now
good news. one guy bought one over the weekend. trying to push him to do a review now. i think he visits the NBR too, he has a 3d05 benchmark.. up -
[edit: i realised it could cause a confusion. the specs below belongs to the a8j that guy bought over the weekend]
specs: t2300, 1GB ram, x1600 (dunno how big), 2.4kg
3dmark05 : 3575
this is the a8jA right dj? -
oh note. the (VERY LOUSY_) pics i took is of the a8jc (nvidia 7300)
-
nice pics bro.
however your right. the A8JC is what you took pictures off.
A8JM = 512 go7600
A8JA = 256 x1600
A8JC = 256 go7300 TurboCache -
Hello all,
Found this forum last week while googling for Asus A8JM.
I just joint today & already want to ask a couple questions to Dysfunctional:
First off all, thank you for the pictures.
Can you provide the complete specs of A8JM & A8JA sold in Singapore?
How much are they? How much is VAT for laptop in Singapore?
I am from Indonesia, if I buy it there, do you think I can claim back that VAT?
THanks -
is that a "vista compatible" sticker in one of those pics?
-
Will this laptop ever come to Americas ?
-
-
Yet another glare screen... Is it safe to say that Asus has abandoned matte screens altogether in it's future models?? Shame.
-
MysticGolem Asus MVP + NBR Reviewer NBR Reviewer
mmakay hard to tell, right now there's so much confusion about screens and whether they are coming with a high res matte screen or a low res glossy screen. THat we just gotta wait untill the actual unit is released before we can say anything.
we've just seen laptops that were spose to have high res matte screens, but then asus put low res glossy ones on them... so right now all we can do is wait and see.
But i have also addressed this issue partially by stating that the North American market DOES PREFER GLOSSY...but i know this issue is EXTREMELY subjective, and not everyone here uses a glossy screen jsut to watch movies.
Alot of us here like to game and do programming in which a matte screen is nice
So lets wait till we make called on what ASUS is doing about their screen choices. I'm still hopeing that the V1J will have a WSXGA+ Matte screen than a WXGA+ Glossy, but the spec sheet does say WXGA Glossy <- bad for an awsome laptop like the V1J.
So we'll see.
Thanks,
MysticGolem -
MysticGolem is right.
There is a large bias towards low-res glossy lcds on laptops in North America. I mean take a look at any laptop at Best Buy, Frys etc.
90% of them have WXGA with glossy.
I think its just sad. All manufacturers should offer the option for upgrading their LCD. Sorta like Dell. -
MysticGolem Asus MVP + NBR Reviewer NBR Reviewer
i definately agree dj, but if you read all of my posts in this thread,
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=52821
You see that its really the structure in which a companies decides to sell notebooks depicts how things turn out in the end, NOT the users like in Dell.
Which means Dell users choose everything they want, and they get it. (yes they pay alot for the upgrades but then use coupons to bring the price back down)
Also the average North American (Canadians and Americans) do not know about computers, or even know anything about laptops. So when the average Joe or Jane sees a laptop with a beautiful screen (most likely glossy) their mindset will assume that glossy is the best way to go, despite that there are pros and cons for both matte and glossy.
No matter what screen asus puts on, we will still buy em, but we will complain at first, its normallol. Even people who want glossy but the screen is matte, people complain. and vice versa. hehe
Now, the WXGA+ (1440x900) glossy screen is kinda playing the fence here, because that resolution is suitable for programmers and graphic designers, but also suitable for those who are visualy impaired, TO A CERTAIN degree for both sides.
Then the added factor of glossy makes people more interested, because its not a pathetic low res glossy screen, nor is is a high res matte screen, its in the middle, lol.
The Example is the MacbookPro. (no i have no seen it yet)
Also its not ASUS's fault totaly, too, you can also sorta blame Samsung for not developing or possibly giving alternative screen options. Yes Samsung makes screens in which manufacturers pick and choose one to put on their laptops.
PS: there are other LCD makers...
Thanks,

hmm, if you wait, it may be possible there's a laptop that would fill your needs of a matte screen. =\
And i will havta agree with you, i like the asus line, but don't always agree with the decisions made on the screen.
Thanks,
MysticGolem -
That laptop has everything I wanted. And if the price is right this summer I might get that laptpo over the A8JM.
I will determine if the price is worth having a slower cpu/gpu but larger WSXGA+ LCD or worth spending more to have a faster cpu/gpu but WXGA LCD. -
The V1J has WXGA?
bummer .. what a waste!
-
If I am spending more $1500 on a laptop it better have a nice high res LCD with glossy. How can Dell offer WUXGA on sub $1200 laptops yet, ASUS cant?? -
MysticGolem Asus MVP + NBR Reviewer NBR Reviewer
hmm djpharoah, ic you want Nvidia plus Yonah in a nice package. Hopefully in the summer there MAY be something released like that from other brands.
There is the V6J, but im guessing you want a widescreen laptop, 15.4", and possibly want a 7600.
If you look to 17" laptops your choices do widen alot. Also maybe, just maybe Sager/Clevo might come up with something.. who knows.
As regard to ASUS making these weird changes to their screens. Well its really hard to tell what's happens with a laptop upon release.
Yes the V1J is spose to have a WXGA glossy screen, ACCORDING to the spec sheet. Other's like my self believe it will have a WSXGA+ Matte screen. However so far the outlooks are grim with several incedents occuring lately.
And to have a small answer to your question Dj, ASUS makes ensemble units that are NOT configurable, hence you can't do anything about it. Whereas in Dell you have freedom and pay less. Kinda don't make sense eh? LOL
To me ASUS is just bringing in the dough with their ensemble units. And the consumers (technically the retailers) bare the costs.
I'm gonna use a small example of cost, these numbers are ROUGH! so don't flame.
a) Manufaturer is ASUS that sends W3J -> b)Retailer sells to -> c) Consumers
I will talk in Canadian dollars here.
1) Retail price of W3J is 2000$ CAD, the profit margin is 10% for the retailer plus tax which can add another 7-8% if dealt in CASH!
Meaning if you pay by credit card The retailer makes roughly 150-250$ profit
If you pay cash profit goes up to 275-375.
2) The manufacturer ASUS makes roughly 20-35% by selling the W3J to a retailer. So ASUS makes about 400-600 per ensemble units that cost the retailer close to 2000$.
3) It is more profitable to make money on ensemble units beacuse the price of selling a BOA to the retailer and that going to the consumer is lower in dollar amount but roughly the same percentage wise.
Yes Dell sells for cheap, but as we all know upgrading cost alot from dell, back 1 year ago, Dell.ca sold 2gb of DDR2 ram @533mhz for over 1000$ canadian! When we all know you can go to your local store and pick up the same ram for 275$ CAD or less.
Hence you can see why dell is expensive to upgrade ( yes is the same for dell.com). Anyways, dell has coupons plus, sell more laptops, and produces more, therefore the INITIAL cost of selling a laptop is lower, plus they use a winning strategy of direct sells.
It has it pros and cons too.
Thanks,
MysticGolem -
I am looking for Nvidia/Yonah Combo. I dont care for the upcoming merom etc. since I will be upgrading from a P3-M @700MHz. This iwll be a huge jump for me.
Also I really dont care for 17" laptops. I need my laptpo to be mobile with me where ever I go. 15.4" is the largest i would get.
I highly doubt the V6J dropping in price. But maybe I can snag a used one or soemthing.
sigh wonder whats going to happen with turionx2? -
MysticGolem Asus MVP + NBR Reviewer NBR Reviewer
ok, so do you mind 14" Widescreen?, but you want a higher res for that small screen?
You MAY be able to find a used V6J.
I don't think you should get your hopes too high with the Turion 2x, when its released, i bet there won't be many Turion 2x laptops out on the market. But we'll wait and see.
Unfortunately alot of notebooks being released come with ATI for mid level gaming. But all high end machines use Nvidia lol. =\
Just gotta wait for now. ASUS A6T. i forget if it has Nvidia or ATI.
Thanks,

The video card is removable as looks like an MXM II module. -

AMEN to that... I'm going to be a college student and I'm definitely on a budget for first year going in... so no more W3J for me... looking at the VBI's and built ons. -
