Sorry but my stuttering doesn't come in at 95~ or higher. It barely hits 80 and i still get stuttering. I've tried with the 163.67 drivers which fixed the stuttering and its the same temp the whole way through.

I am planning to buy g1s-b2 and I wonder if the problem of stuttering was also noticed on it?
And has anyone who gave their Asus to the company's service because of the stuttering issue got it back without the problem?

Based on the results of everyone else who posted in previous threads, most people reported the 95C. I'd imagine that your stuttering is a different issue to the one being discussed.

Do you get your stuttering in all 3D applications or just some? The issue being discussed here occurs in ALL 3D applications.

What is your ambient room temp ? Based on posts on this forum 80C is pretty low for a G1S GPU load temp.

My GPU is idling right now at 50C and its only about 18C in my room. It's with Serious Sam 2, NFS Most Wanted, NFS Underground 2, UT2004, BF2, the list goes on.

Also, when others put in their old 7950 Cards for desktops, the problem goes away. Its not like the heating problem should only be due to 8000 and 9000 series. Others also report in the topic i provided that they idle with 70 - 80 and get the stuttering problem. This could be a fix for the G1S but not for others.

Lol. It's odd weather here. Sometimes its 30C, sometimes its -10C. I can't predict whats outside. Its idling at 65C right now because its 29C right now :/

I also have some stuttering problems, it's stuttering the sound, it's not only in 3D apps, but even on windows, when watching a movie, or listening Winamp, and at the same time I open an intensive CPU program...
I'm using XP SP3, but the same goes for SP2....it's not stuttering with Vista though, but for example, BF2 doesn't run at all on multiplayer (Vista / XP), it's crashing to desktop after 2-3 minutes of playing, which I'm pretty sure it's a sound driver problem. I've tried different drivers, one is working better than the other (crashes few minutes later). Also, I have some problems with the LAN driver for XP, it's when I unplug my LAN cable, the laptop hangs (if music is playing at this time, it starts shuttering continuously) until I plug the cable back. This is really weird

About the driver issues, I don't have any useful suggestion... About stuttering: Do you perhaps have that ASUS Data Security Manager software installed? That has caused stuttering in the past.

No, it's a clean Vista/XP install, no ASUS software at all. I'm aware of the Asus Data Security Manager shuttering issue, thanks E.B.E.

Evening lads, im not sure if its the same stuttering problem we are talking about here, but note that when your notebook consumes a big amount of power the recharger will try to provide a larger amount power. Which can result in the recharger to overheat. This happens frequently when i've dropped a t-shirt on top of the recharger :s

What happens when the recharger gets warm is that it will deliver less power to prevent melting and a possible fire. This again results in the notebook battery to drain. When the G1S battery drops below 90% it will cut your CPU performance with 50%. Thats right you heard me correct. This is to make sure that your laptop wont overheat and cause damage. Im not certain if it cuts the performance of both cores in 50% or if it just shuts down one of the cores. The last mentioned is the favorable one as most games and applications only runs on 1 core anyway. Oh and it will only cut the cpu performance when you are recharging, if you run on battery and set it to high performance it will give 100% untill the battery is drained.

    There is a solution!
Keep your recharger cool, just make sure its not covered by your laundry. Keep your notebook plugged in so it stays over 90%. If you have used your notebook without a power plug, allow it to recharge to over 90% before you start putting it under heavy load.
This final solution was found by *adolfotregosa*, it will remove the problem 100% and i can vouch for it as i use his solution. I do recommend using this solution if you are certain that your laptop does not overheat.

Final Solution, go to section 1:
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=146088

    Table for performance loss:
    http://vip.asus.com/forum/view.aspx?id=20070722133841343&board_id=3&model=G1S&page=1&SLanguage=en-us

If you have this stuttering issue i suggest you also check your battery levels at the time it stutters. It could be the cause.

My G1S never stutters today. It does however rarely even reach 80c when OC'd to 580/820 and max load. Cooling solutions can also be found in the threads above.

Isn't the stuttering issue due to the GPU being throttled down, rather than CPU?

My GPU being my graphic card never throttles down. The one mentioned above is CPU and was solved by disabling the automatic thermal monitor on the CPU using RMCLOCK 2.30.

Oh and if your GPU throttles down it should be the clocks lowering it self, run ATItool and monitor your clocks. If it goes warm and says "current clocks" lower then 475/700 then its throttled down.

as now when im surfing the web it only runs at 169/100. Default for 3D low power is 275/301. If your card gets to warm it might be clocking it self down to the 3Dlow settings.

This guys 3D mark results i am very interested in! because they are WAY to high for a G1S with default clocks! I personally score about 4700 when i oc to
580/820, ive had it up to 4887, but that was a killer OC.

Give me a sec, im going to run 3dmark06 again with stock clocks and atitool to monitor the temperature. If i score much lower then him and the temp is not high enough to cause the down throttle it should be the drivers giving him the good results and not the cooling.

All test has been run in 1280*1024 with all settings on default in 3dmark06.

Ok here is the results from test 1.

PLUGGED IN FULL BATTERY 167.45 driver

    BEFORE START UP:

AFTER FIRST RUN WITH STOCK CLOCKS DRIVER 167.45
    [IMG]

First i want to say is that it never went above 85c. The highest i saw was 80. This is with default clocks 475/700 and the 167.45 driver. I will now run it again with overclock. 3907 is btw a good result for a G1S with stock driver / clock.

This is results before and after with OC. I seen the temperature hit 90c with this configuration.
    BEFORE START UP
    [IMG]

AFTER SECOND RUN WITH OVER CLOCK 580/820 + CPU 2365mhz. DRIVER 167.45
    [IMG]

So at the moment i can conclude that i score 8 points lower with the laptop overclocked then the person quoted claims he scores with factory default clocks. I also want to mention that i have 4 GB ram PC 5300 instead of the 2Gb setup he has, otherwise its the exact same laptop. Its time to update the drivers to the one he has and see what happens! I have to admit i got doubts that i will score as high as he does, it will be interesting to see.

PLUGGED IN RECHARGING FROM 80%, 167.45 driver
Ok here is some results for how the score when the pc is recharging with and without "enabled thermal monitor". The theory is that with the default settings (enabled) the CPU should loose performance compared to when thermal monitor is not enabled while recharging.

BEFORE TEST, same OC as above, 80% battery, RECHARGING
    [IMG]

AFTER TEST, charged to 85% battery. *NOTE* CPU SCORE 1702! when it was full battery it scored 2079!

OK Here is the results when Thermal Monitor is DISABLED.

BEFORE TEST, same OC as above, 80% battery, RECHARGING, DISABLED THERMAL MONITOR
    [IMG]

AFTER TEST, charged to 83% battery. *NOTE* CPU SCORE 2058! This proves that by disabling the thermal monitor when your battery is recharging the CPU will NOT lose any performance. The battery has also recharged 2% less then when thermal monitor was enabled, this indicates that the CPU has had priority instead of recharging the battery.

    Conclusion on the 167.45 driver
So we can conclude for now that you loose an important amount of performance when your battery is below 90% and recharging. The CPU score went from 2079 to 1702 when it was recharging. By Disabling Thermal Monitor it did however climb back up to 2058 CPU score. The battery recharged less and the temperature increased 2-3c. I also want you to notice that the CPU score is THE ONLY score that varies when the laptop was plugged in with full battery and when it was recharging, the other 2 scores where more or less the same! This proves that it is the CPU that loses performance and NOT the GPU when you recharge your notebook.

Now to post results on the newer driver :)

PLUGGED IN FULL BATTERY 175.63 driver
Well i am happy to say that i did get a better score with the new drivers, 100 points better in fact. With the 167.45 driver i got 3907 and now i scored 4075 with default factory settings. The new window in the pictures below is rivatuner, just to show that the driver has been updated.

BEFORE THE TEST, factory defaults plugged in.

AFTER THE TEST, factory defaults plugged in.

And here is the grand finale with the overclocked 175.63 !

Before the test, OC, 580/820, 2365mhz, thermal disabled.

After the test, compared to 4731 with the 167.45 we now reached 4948!

    Conclusion on the 175.63 driver
This new driver has given my laptop a performance boost of 100 - 300 points depending on when its NormalClocked or OverClocked.
I did also run the OC setting on 1024*768 one time and it gave me 6149 score. This would explain how WEissbr0t managed to get 4739 on default clocks.

Note to all people who wants to run 3dmark06, the results you publish should be in default settings. If not you should notify the readers.

The 175.63 drivers gave a performance boost, but not really what i had hoped for. I had no stuttering issues during any of these tests. The temperature was steady below 90c which would again imply that the stuttering issue comes from OVER HEATING and NOT DRIVERS.

Here is a image of the 1024*768

Here is the results on the stuttering issue you talk about. Its a fact that even in the newest driver it still stutters when it reaches high temps.
    '
Updated section 1 + 10, thermal monitor, stuttering issue has been proven above 95c with the newest 175.63 drivers at section 10 and some that where posted in section1 has been moved to section 10 OC as this is where it really belongs and makes reading the post easier.

Here is 4 images of the stuttering test.

    1. AVG frames increase.

    2. AVG frames starts to decrease at 96c.

    3. AVG frames continue to decrease, but the temp is finally stable 96c.

    4. AVG frames test reset to show the true AVG frame when its throttled down.

    Conclusion:

Stuttering occurs at approximately 95c. It lowered performance from 344 fps to 269 fps which is a 27% decrease in performance.

I really don't understand how its a heat or battery problem when my game stutters, put my laptop to sleep and bring it back from sleep, the stuttering is gone. I haven't changed anything and the temps and the power are the same. Thats just what i think.

That suggests power management bugs, in the ACPI or GPU drivers...

Or that your GPU has cooled down. Because it definitively throttles down when it reaches 95c.

Please measure the temps while gaming and see where it is when it stutters, it could be something different with your notebook, but this is the only time i see stuttering on my own.

Right when the game started to stutter, i went to SpeedFan and heres the temps.

I do the sleep fix, play the game for about 45 min with no stuttering
    [IMG]

I played it even longer and it went up to like 84C.

Higher temp on the Sleep Fix yet no stuttering.

Game was NFS MW. Happens for all games under Unreal Engine 2.5 or newest Unreal Engine.

With my g1s-a1 the graphics lag when its hot like um visually, dun dunnnn duh dun dunnnnn duh repeatedly and im like runing to a drum beat in games. but i put my g1s on an air conditioner for an hour and froze it then i maxed out the graphic cards clock which is meant to be higher because it was lowered for how hot it gets and i maxed out ut3 and crysis :S i was almost crying in glory but the problem is that was in a hotel and i need an airconditioner now :)

Is it even possible to Max out Crysis on a G1S and playable? Even with an overclock, i dont think thats very likely that its smooth.

30 fps no joke. None of the settings went to very high, not enough memory for that. next time im around an air conditioner ill film it. and crysis was only on 1024x768. so its not demanding hardocre. The g1s is rated to play at medium though.

I dont think "temp1" is your GPU mate, i run SpeedFan and Temp1 shows 33c while ATItool shows me 57!

Please download ATItool and redo the test.

    This is what SpeedFan looks like to me;

Then again im a new when it comes to Speedfan and tried it for the first time yesterday.

I did the same thing. Completely disassemble and applied Silver Arctic 5.
Now it's nice and cool. That piece of metal went to garbage directly, and you was right. GPU die was not even covered with cooling paste. I applied half of tube to make sure it's covered completely, and right now it running very cool. Again thank you

Ok so I install ATItool and it didn't work at all. Didn't reconize anything on my PC so it didnt give me any options to do any tests or anything. So, i installed Everest and used my Taskbar as a reader. I played NFS MW for 10 Min and got the stuttering. No surprise, high temp.

But wait! I did the sleep fix and played for a few more till i worked out the video card a bit, guess what, no stutter yet look at the temp.

oo that is weird indeed. Could you do a 3dmark06 test or some sort of benchmark so we can see for "certain" ?

if not il test. - so i just put my laptop to sleep and then turn it back on again?

I could do a game cam and show the stuttering and then do a Sleep fix and do that way instead. Be kinda hard to upload though. 3DMark06 has stuttering also and none with Sleep Fix also. Its just the way Newer games handle shaders alike how the Unreal Engine uses shaders. If you disable all the dynamic lights in a game with a program or disable them manually through all the levels, the game run stutter free. No joke, ppl have tested it and its worked, but the game takes a big FPS hit. nVidia says the 177.xx will indeed fix the stuttering issue.

To test, just play any game that might give u trouble. Most reported are UT2004, NFS games like Most Wanted or Underground 2, CoD1, 2, 3 or 4 or even UT3. Play the game, get the stutter and then just quit the game, put laptop to sleep, wake it up and play it again.

Hey peeps, I just picked up a G1S-X1 couple weeks ago (a great deal on eBay for $675, I might add ;) ). Here's my story about the stutters...

First, I installed the ASUS vga drivers, realized those were so out-of-date/shi-tay, so installed the lap2go driver 175.12, and was having all sorts of issues - from "powermizer", skipping, performance, etc. (I know this ver. has worked for some people though)

I thought it was driver related, then 175.63 came out - Still having problems, "powermizer" settings were going berzerk, insane stuttering(really it was ridiculous), and it seemed to make all my temps +10'C (2D,low3D,and hi-perf) even though all the clocks were the same. I was tweaking everything trying to fix all the probs. I was going to reinstall the stock drivers. But... I did this in RivaTuner just for kicks... - under the Main Tab, Driver Settings, customize, there's a little registry icon with the little broom that resets the driver to default values. I did that, reboot, and magically - no more powermizer clock fluctuations. (I don't know if that's gonna be good for me all the time), but it definitely helped the stuttering problem and almost all my performance issues are gone. I didn't realize temps were driver dependent, I kept hearing temps might be controlled by the bios(maybe they still are to some degree - pun intended). Either way, I'm able to get well over 95'C (not that I really want to).

I know theres soo many answers out there for the G1S'/8600m stutter problems (although it might be the 8xxx series with low memory in general[under 512]). I've heard to clamp the negative LOD, use VSync in nVidia CP, reapply the thermal grease on my C/GPU (which would be insane if I HAVE to do that, even though I plan to). I haven't really given the sleep trick a try, but I don't really have to. The only problem I have at the moment, is Gears of War, major stuttering. I run Bioshock everything maxed res 1680x1050 I get an average of 25fps, but that's not OC'd. Crysis I use default graphics settings (which is a mix of med-high settings) and a rez of 1024x640 - I get a very playable 25fps, again, no OC. Both games I start to push 28-29fps average if I OC. I'm alot happier! Just wish I could get Gears to run better. I'm going to see if 4gb of ram will stop the stuttering in that, as I think it's a texture streaming issue. I really don't know HOW this came about, other than resetting driver settings to default via RivaTuner. Figured I'd pass this along, hopefully it helps someone else out. I just wish I knew exactly what was changed to make the clocks stop fluctuating - other than sheer happenstance. Also, now it's always stuck in Perf3D, so I gotta remember to manually underclock it when going mobile. But, it beats getting the jitters/having to crack your lappy open!

P.S. - Props to Predator_MF for the LCDHype script-fu!!! I use a modified version to monitor my GPU stats with the output plugin from RivaTuner (didn't feel like paying for Everest - even though it is a pretty sweet prog).

WARNING: If you like what Powermizer(or whatever Vista does for you), don't attempt this fix, as I've no idea how to reverse it (yet), obviously it's got something to do with the drivers, I just haven't found out what - yet. Again, you might have to change your clocks manually from this point out.

Yea, don't go with 175.xx drivers at all. There has been a lot of temp raises with those drivers. Recommend sticking with 174.xx for some lower temps and same performance.

I first used 174.31, it is really a performance hit, I played crysis @ 25-40fps at medium-high. I had no shuttering in Crysis though, I have it only in COD4, it happens when the GPU temp goes to 96-97°...upgrading 174.93 fixed the shuttering a bit, I got lower temps now (88-92°).

@The3DLink - Gears of war runs maxed out @ 1280x960 avg 40-50fps, it's really enjoyable with this settings, I get no shuttering at all

@ Predator_MF - What drivers are you using currently, and are they giving you these #'s? 174.93? The only game I'm really having a problem with is Gears. I WAS having it with UT3, but I got the 1.2 patch, and got 30fps/maxed/1680x1050, I was astonished that this lappy could pull it off. It was beautiful. I was OC'd though. But, when it comes to Gears, which is a seemingly less graphically intense game, it stutters. I can see my hard drive light going nuts, so I thought it was a texture streaming issue like alot of other folks have mentioned. As far as the temperature thing setting off stuttering, I was as high as 99°C last night, and my clocks didn't budge. I really wish I knew how to enable/disable the auto clock adjustments.

i disassembled my g1s-b1, i lost warranty but now i do not have shuttering problems, i can use every driver i want, and i have also a bios overclock with 575mhz for core and 800 for memory, now i can execute 3dmark06 demo in loop for 5-6 hours without any shuttering, i had to remove the vga dissipator, to remove the thermal pad, to modify it to have a better touch with the gpu surface and a used a thermal compound, and other little triks... NOW that i can do 4788 points in 3dmark06 and i do not have any shuttering issue in any condition, NOW i have a gaming series machine!!!! f*ck ASUS!!!!!!!

I also removed the VGA dissipator, replaced both CPU and GPU's TM with Artic MX-2, my clocks are 500/800, before and after replacement I HAD shuttering, with the new paste definitely the GPU stays cooler (88-92 few hours of COD4 maxed out 1280x960@50-80fps), but it didn't fix the shuttering until I installed 174.93. Now I have 100pts less in 3Dmark06 but I rarely get any shuttering.

I have never had any shuttering with Gears, I'm really amazed how smooth it runs here, almost perfect (except some very intensive 3D scenes where probably the RAM is not enough so there's a 0.2-0.5 second loading of some data from the disk)

@ - 9600xt - How'd you edit your bios? Any pics of the modifications you made? A tutorial = ) ... As far as ASUS goes... It's one of those situations that looked good/great on paper, but poor execution. Just wish they'd be more supportive.

@ Predator_MF : Do you have any pics of your mods? Also, what're you getting in 3Dmark06 with those drivers? Do you think my hard drive speed could be affecting Gears? (I hear it's streaming-intensive)

@The3DLink, lately I remember smt like 5300pts 3Dmark06 (default settings), that was a month ago or more. My HDD is 7200rpm, I think same as yours.... by shuttering in COD4 I mean something like repeating a sound that's 20ms for 1 second...it's like a low freq noice in the speakers and that same time the picture is stuck.

I have few more problems, the one I haven't found a solution yet is when I remove my LAN cable, 3 of 5 times it starts shuttering continiously until I plug the cable back again (it can stay shuttering more than 10 minutes and the only thing that fix it is the cable plugged back). This is probably related to the drivers I use, all of them are dowloaded from asusg1s.wikidot. I'll check for a new drivers later, probably this will fix it.

What benefits does a bios-overclock have over driver OCing? Is there a gain in stability?
Has anyone tried raising the voltages to get more stable, higher clocks yet?

this is whot i removed from the dissipator (to the right) and from the chip of our 8600m gt video card (on the left)... also i maded other mod to the dissipator, but only simple simple simple things, like to put some thermal compound under the copper bar in the parts that are in contact with the alluminium dissipator, also i flexed the chopper bar to fit in a better way with the vga chip and some little other things..........

@Predator_MF : Wow, 5300... I'm not even getting that on an aggressive OC (594Cclk/777.6mem i get 4444pts on default). I must have something jacked-up. My G1S only has a 5400rpm drive, and a t7300, but still my numbers shouldn't be that far off from yours. Maybe I'll try out those drivers of yours.

By "(default settings)" I mean default 3Dmark06 settings - 1280x1024x(whatever), not default GPU clocks, I told you in my prevous post what are the clocks, I just did the test again - 5383pts, clocks are 500/780/1400MHz

That's one of the highest scores I've seen for the G1S (and 8600m's for that matter), if not THE highest. Do you overclock via BIOS? I just got the same drivers, RivaTuned it up to those speeds, and only got ~4600 @ 1280x1024. I'm missing out on alot of speed here.... And I know my clocks aren't changing during the test, thanks to LCDHype and your script ;)

Update: It very well could be the CPU Marks giving you that boost. I'm only getting a 1750 at best. You've got about 800mhz on my rig. If you have the #'s from that bench, do you think you could see what your SM scores are separately? That would give a more isolated comparison.

The 174.xx drivers did not get rid of the stuttering in Gears. Its still giving me that crap, It's completely unplayable, even at 400x300! Some people thinks it's the Unreal Engine. I WAS having the problem with UT3, got the 1.2 patch, and it's running like butter on max everything. I don't see why Gears couldn't either. Does anyone think Gears is more graphically demanding than UT3? I know looking at some of the .ini files for both, some of gears setting for character LOD are higher. I'm guessing since UT3 is mostly a MP game it's built primarily for speed. But, Bioshock runs like a dream too. It's gotta be something with Gears.

Oh, btw I must have forgot to tell you, it's Windows XP SP3 (same results on XP SP2 though). Vista gave me less than 5000. Yes, I'm clocking with Riva Tuner....I really don't know what to tell you about Gears, it's probably something with Gears installation, version or smt...I don't see any other reason

PS: Oh, and my default score was 4300 on Vista when I purchased it. The only reason I clocked it is Crysis, else it plays any game I've tried on max by default.
Bios overclocking does nothing more than Riva Tuner's clocking, but some drivers don't allow overclocking, so it is the only way then.

UPDATE: I've solved MOST of my Gears of War stuttering! All I did was edit the properties of [Startup.exe] and [WarGame-G4WLive.exe] - Changed both of them to run in Windows XP SP2 compatability mode, and let both run as administrator. Got rid of all the major stutter. Maybe it'll work for other games as well? One thing to note: You have to make sure you don't run it in DX10 mode. Also, you may have to edit 2 of the .ini files and make sure [OnlyStreamInTextures=False]. These .ini files are [WarEngineUserSettings.ini] and [DefaultEngineUserSettings.ini]. Most likely they'll be in the c:\users\[your user name]\documents\my games\gears of war for windows\wargame\config\ (at least thats how it is in Vista, not sure about XP installs)

@Predator_MF - Ooooh, thats it! I was racking my brain trying to figure out what the deal with my setup was. Interesting that there's that much of a gap between performance.

I figured OC'ing either way was pretty much the same. I've heard that doing it via bios was more stable, but never heard why, or seen proof.
