It's an OK overclock but nothing that should cause it to throttle unless the heat from the 920 is overwhelming everything. I can push mine to 616 core, 1000 memory and 1540 shader stable and that's pre and post hole mod. Did the GPU temps hit 110C?

Cheapest one would be built by me. 2nd cheapest would be the dell xps9000: http://www.dell.com/us/en/home/desktops/desktop-studio-xps-9000/pd.aspx?refid=desktop-studio-xps-9000&s=dhs&cs=19&~oid=us~en~29~desktop-studio-xps-9000_anav_1~~

oh, I also forgot about the asus Essentio CG5290, but it's not really available anywhere. but with the addition of the monitor it will come out to around $1400 and probably plus tax. so also around the same thing.

Man, that XPS is trash. You can build a better build on your own with that kind of money.

Actually, it comes out about the same. I not a big fan of dell. My first choice would be the asus Essentio CG5290. If I build a computer, it comes out to the same thing. From the prevous build that I've done long ago, I've noticed that buying a built computer is usually the same price a building one, if not cheaper. The only benefit of building one yourself, is customization towards high end computers. With lower end/mid level systems, it's better to just buy one build. Unless, you can get huge discounts (as I once used to get) or you find a sale item.

It's never better to buy a pre-built Dell. With a custom build you can choose the type of mainboard, PSU, ram etc and make sure they're all quality parts. Dell on the other hands sources out to the cheapest bidder.

oh, I am very well familiar with dell's crappiness. I have one. Oh, off topic...I once called dell for tech support and someone from the US picked up the phone...
Then another time another time I called dell, one of my distant relatives picked up (not really, but you get the point)..... but that was more like it. :p

you gotta be kidding, 1000USD will take a LONG WAY with desktop, you will get much better components with 1000usd vs the ones in the G51J at least. try going to ibuypower, but really, give urself a flexible +200USD and u can build a beast, not to mention it will rape the G51 in every way possible.

I just configured one at their site. I broke $1000 with nearly the most basic stuff, and I wasn't finished. with monitor $1279+tax...about $1400. I don't really want to spend more than $1000 for an i7 desktop (everything complete, including monitor). I think it would take at least a $500 savings for me to ditch the laptop ($1700).
I really don't think it's possible for me to aquire a complete system for around $1000 with an i7, gtx 260, and monitor.

you know you like my sig. :p
technically, I pre-preordered it. but that's another story. I can't change my sig to "Asus G51J-A1 - on order" till midnight pst tonight.
I was just having some mild pre-order jitters. I'm gonna stick with it cuz I don't know how long this dell of mine will last. I'll definitely need a laptop. This is what happens to unemployed people that have bad spending habits.

Damn, I swear this laptop is about to go. I'm just waiting for the cpu to melt right through the plastic. Something smells like melted plastic.

The only reason I ordered the sager is because asus didn't have anything available in regards to the i7 mobile. Literally, the day after I preordered sager, xotic announced the g51j. Had I known asus would have had the g51j, I would have bypassed the sager. It was the only alternative I had at the time (i'm not gonna even mention dell or aw).

To tell you a story. Several years ago, I preordered a 2003 S.S. Impala, black on black or was it silver on gray......anyways, I cancelled it to buy a dodge ram instead. I didn't realize gas was gonna be as expensive as it is today, but I do get my use out of the truck and I'm glad I have it.

LOL, I will race you, I got a hp dv8000 I am trying to hold together until the the asus gets in. I had to buy a parts laptop for it a couple months ago to replace keys and hinges. I just put win7 x64 on it saturday to get me prepped up :p

it's on. I had to replace my ram and hard drive. My screen flickers randomly. This thing gets hot enough that the rubber pads on the bottom lost is it's stickiness and fell off. The battery no longer holds it charge. I'm planning to turn it into a hackintosh once I get the new one.
However, I think we should do a 24 hour furmark race. First one to have the cpu melt through the computer wins! :D

The only reason why I have not placed my order on the G51J is because I am moving on Nov 1. Xoxtic said "I should" have it by then, but I try not to trust anyone who is trying to make a sale... Has anyone here had experience with them? How long did it take to get your laptop? I am paying via Credit Card. Just adding the diamond paste and blu ray drive. I could of course wait till after I move, but it would not be as exciting. Also by then rumors might come through about something and being the obsessed person I am I would wait it out (similar situation when I wanted to get G51VX), I know it's only a week or two but still, if not a laptop from Asus then someone else would come out with something better.

haha, yah you might have me there. but this thing is awful hot, the 2nd drive is out, sd card slots are toast. fortunately the parts laptop had a good battery, which is good cuz the charger cable keeps falling out.

Order now if you wish. They probably have the computers already on hand. If you're willling to wait, there's supposed to be a G51j special edition, with a higher refresh rate and capable of 3D (with glasses included). I just don't know if it will be worth the price.

Thanks though, but nah. I want an i7. If I am only to have 1 computer, it's gonna be an i7. But it is tempting to buy in addition to the g51j. I have a bad spending habit. :D

If you are willing to build it yourself, an i7 can certainly be done with a 860, 4GB RAM, 500GB HD, 22" LCD for about $1000. I configure one that's SLI ready with ASUS SLI mobo, Antec 650W PSU & Case, for $1100.

I have no problem building it myself, but I'm having a very difficult time configuring one at that price. I've been looking. Everytime, I get the same result. It's always around $1400-1500 including tax. I don't really wanna spend anything more than $1000-1100 for a complete setup (including monitor). But this computer has to have a graphics card, minimum gtx260 and intel i7 920.

    nevermind it's newegg.
I'm so tempted on this instead of the g51j, but the only reason I'm hesitating is because I don't know how much long my current laptop will last. I'll have to think it over by tonight and mkae my decision.

If you don't need the mobility or not planing to play outside home, and you have space for desktop, then it should be easy choice, a desktop will run cooler, faster, cheaper, much better OC, and upgradeable.

I own this mobo, and i woulnt recommend it, it has had a wierd power problem for the begining, which i though was fixed with the new bios, but it still happens from time to time, always thinking someday it might die on me, this problem is reported by a lot of people in newegg reviews. I would probably build i7 but with the 820 / p55 setup, a lot of reviews have putten it above the 920 in terms of performance, still close. If you still want to go with 920/1366 setup, and thinking about cheap mobo, i would probably go with ASRock X58 Extreme $159, probably the mobo ill buy if the UD3R dies on me.

Notice a minor issue with G51J-A1, when connect the AC with lid open the power will turn on without pressing the power button, could be BIOS issue, already notify Asus.

    Hey guys..i'm new in here..lol

im going to buy g51vx-a1 tomorrow..i read some opinions about this ASUS series..and overall..the problem is it about the heat that is produced??well..i'm not too familiar with those overclock things and so on..

and i guess..i will run my laptop without overclocking it..*that might causing a problem in the heat temp.and i think it's enough for me..hehehe..

Will i have the heat problem if i dont do the overclock?thx for ur reply.God bless.

Its not too much of a problem if you don't push your machine too hard. For games I don't run all settings in Max but try to find a good balance. Keeping the screen resolution down can make quite a difference and it still looks great.

For this machine I strongly recommend getting a notebook cooler. I use the Zalman ZM-NC2000 and it works quite well. Even with the cooler turned off it allows for air to get to the vents underneath the laptop.

You can overclock the A1 easily with the program included called Power4Gear. It will overclock the CPU from 2.0Mhz to 2.15Mhz for some extra power.

I've had my g51vx-a1 since early September. These forums really helped a lot and I made sure I had a cooler the day I got my laptop. I won't run a game without it.

Even if you get a g51J I think the heat issue will be pretty much the same. Just be careful.

you know, it's not really heat problems unless it affects the performance of the computer. the asus is designed to withstand the heat. Therefore, there isn't really a "heat problem," per se. It's safer to state that the G51 runs hotter than other comparable notebooks.

Just wanted to make a statement about the heat issues but I don't want to sound like a fanboy. Im just going to say look at the form factor of the g51's.

They have a core i7 and a 260m. Look how small the notebook is. Its barley thicker then my dv6000. It weighs alot but the overall slimness is great. then take a look at the m15x and the sager np8960. Those 2 are both huge. They had to make it a wedge design so it diddnt look like a box. Just keep in mind this.

Asus did a great job of fitting the most powerful components into a tiny package. :)
