There are two mSATA card form factors. The "standard" size and one that is 1/2 as long. The slot in the UX303 is for the 1/2 length mSATA card.

It's a form factor. Half height mSATA, also known as half size mSATA, Slim mSATA, and mSATA Mini. Same size as typical Wi-Fi cards in laptops these days. On Amazon there are only two lines of products in this form factor: Emperor Disk and MyDigitalSSD. The largest capacity is 128GB, I believe.

Good morning all from the middle of the USA,

I picked up a ASUS UX303LN from Amazon about a week ago and I have not even turned it on yet, my time has been real limited. Once I do turn it on, I know I will spend a fair amount of time getting initial settings and updates taken care which brings me to my question.

Can anyone give a quick recommendation or advice on first things to take care of firing up this machine?
    • Driver Updates?
    • Patch Updates?
    • Bloat ware removal?
    • Etc….

    Thanks,
    Dustin

    Hey guys,
First post here...but I've been following this thread for a while.

I'm really interested in the US QHD UX303LN just had a few questions for those who own it:

    1. On average how long does the battery last while browsing the web w/out any mods
    2. Is the yellow problem noticeable if you don't do graphics design/photo/video editing?
    3. Does the heat from when running under load greatly effect the performance of the graphics card/ processor

looking to use this for engineering school.

    Thanks guys!

Very noticeable. The yellow looks like mustard (dark). In fact, some yellow text on dark background is hard to read under normal conditions.
If you want accurate colors for graphics design, use external monitor. You can still work on the go, just use numeric readouts and don't trust your eyes only ;)

The only laptop I owned that could be used for graphics without external monitor was Sony Vaio VPC-Z11 with 96% Adobe RGB FHD matrix. I still have that matrix but it's 13.1" and does not fit anywhere (modern laptops are 13.3").

    v9.5.35 to v9.5.40 changelog:

    - CIRA connection is not opened when the CIRA initiates a PET event.
    - PKI provisioning fails when the certificate contains some Organizational Units and the Organizational Unit 'Intel(R) Client Setup Certificate' is not listed first.
    - Intel Platform Trust Technology security issue
    - TPM is able to restore NV data written before a Restart/Reset sequence with the CLEAR_STCLEAR flag set.
    - TPM enters failure mode when defining two NV indices with TPMA_NV_ORDERLY bits set.

Our notebooks run v9.5.10 from the factory (the changelog pre-v9.5.35 is unknown) but the ME firmware contains a number of modules: AMT (Active Management Technology), ASF (Alert Standard Format), QST (Quiet System Technology) and TPM (Trusted Platform Module) along with chipset settings (clocks, frequencies etc) which affect important parameters such as BCLK, RAM, Turbo Boost and fans speeds so definitely worth updating.

Can you give me some pointers on controlling fan speed?

After working fine for 2 months, since a few days ago my fans have been stuck at 100%. I've tried changing power profiles, resetting the BIOS, upgrading the BIOS, reinstalling windows and running a linux distro from usb. Even in the BIOS the fans are running at 100% so I'm not sure what is going on.

CPU-Z shows the CPU idling at about 800mHz, HWMonitor shows the temps stable at 35-40 degrees but can't get a read on the fan speeds. Notebook Fancontrol doesn't support the 303LN yet and to create a new config you need to take some readings at different fan speeds - not something that I can do given the fans are stuck at 100%.

It's also draining my battery very quickly so it's more than just the noise inconvience.

I've logged an inquiry with ASUS technical support but I'm sure I'll get a quicker and more accurate answer here.

    Thanks,
    hubrat

By unlocking your BIOS you can access fan control but if this has started a couple of days ago, it's probably something that has gone faulty. If you are comfortable with opening the laptop up and disconnecting both the battery and CMOS battery then that may fix it.

Thanks for the quick response. Assuming the CMOS battery is the one over by the main SSD slot then I've already tried that when I opened the case to make sure there wasn't any dust or anything else in there.

If I unlock the BIOS is it easy enough to re-lock if I decide to send it back to ASUS or will I void my warranty? I'm inclined to give it a go anyway.

You can try unlocking the BIOS to access the fan profile but to be honest I doubt that's the problem.

You really need to find out why it's doing it.

Have you also tried holding down the power button for 1 minute to clear the CMOS, just in case removing the battery didn't do the trick?

If you do want to unlock a few options in the BIOS I did it the other day:

    1) Update to the latest LA/LN BIOS from ASUS Support.

    2) Download AFUWIN v4.xx

    3) Run AptioV AFUWINGUI and press save to extract the current BIOS.

    4) Download and run AMIBCP v4.55.0070

    5) Open the rom you extracted, set the following options and save:

    Bios.png

    6) Run AptioV AFUWINGUI, open the modified rom and press flash.

    7) Reboot and check out your new BIOS options.

You can quite easily remove the unlocked BIOS by flashing back to stock.

Briefly thought I was making progress with this one. Disconnected the battery & CMOS battery and held the power button for 1 minute and had no fans come on the next boot. I shutdown from the login screen and then on the next boot from power-on the fans were back to 100%.

Did the procedure again but didn't get anywhere for a few more tries then randomally it worked again and had no fans at boot but they came on at 100% when entering my password. Again no luck wih the remove battery trick but I then tried to just reset the BIOS which got me no fans until I started entering my password again and back to 100% fan speed. Tried all these things again multiple times and can't get the fans to be off even for the boot up again.

I then modified and flashed the BIOS - thanks for the detailed instructions - was actually very easy. I had a look around the new settings but they haven't made a difference. I even changed the CPU settings for the BIOS to handover the CPU in a power-saving state with no luck.

Thanks for your help, I might have to wait for a response from ASUS.

Just out of interest in the advanced settings of your Windows power profile try changing the Processor power management - System cooling policy to passive.

It sounds like it's Windows that's setting your fans to max.

Also if you install this: Dynamic Platform and Thermal Framework Version 8.0.10002.14 WHQL

It adds some settings in your power profile including acoustics limit.

Thanks, I had passive set in the profiles I was using but have changed them all to passive without any improvement. I also went through the new settings and they haven't made any change either.

I'll keep on digging until ASUS get back to me.

    Hello all,

The UX303LN FHD version wasn't available in my country (Singapore) so I bought one from Australia ( Link).

At that discounted rate, the i7, 256gb hdd, 8gb (c4147h) is almost the same price as the i5, 750gb + 16gb hybrid hdd, 8gb (dq238h) version we have in Singapore. What a steal!

The Australian retailer accepts Paypal but you will need a local address to ship it. You can use probably use frieght forwarder.

I am using Parcel It On ( Link) and their email is [email protected]. They are charging 70 AUD + shipping + Paypal fee to get the machine to you. I thought the service fee was fair and their response is pretty fast.

I will update you all again when I get my hand on the machine.

recently i bought the ux303ln-dq228h but there's one thing bothering me a lot.
Usually i just close the lid to let the notebook undergoes 'sleep', but after a few hours when i try to open the lid to return use, i cannot wake up the notebook by such method. So, i have to press the power button once to wake it up, then the notebook 'wake up', but soon enter sleep mode because i press the power button once.

So thats very strange that most of the notebook can wake up whenever the user open the lid, but this wont work in my situation, any solution to that problem???/

Hey everyone, while trying to fix the spacebar by pressing and holding it abit hard and slightly lifting it from edges and massaging it by holding it down and moving it up and down, now the right side seems to abit loose when I click on it, could this have been caused by what I did before or are the components under the spacebar stable or what?
    Thanks in advance.

Hi all - I'm having a reboot/boot issue that's really weird. Any time I REBOOT my UX303LN is sits at the black ASUS screen for 25-28 seconds before the dots start spinning then it goes immediately to Windows. While on the other hand if I BOOT my UX303LN from an off state it gets to Windows in about 7 seconds. Any idea why Reboot takes 4x as long as Boot?

I have the UX303LN from Amazon in the US.

Yes that appears to be the case, turning off the "Turn on fast startup" Windows feature makes a cold boot (from power off) take 25-30 seconds just like a reboot. So what you are saying is that 30 second boot/reboot is normal? How long does a full reboot take you?

For the ~7 second boot I do Start->Shutdown then use the power button to turn it on.

For the ~30 second reboot I do Start->Restart and then start timing from when the Asus logo appears.

I'm really perturbed that my UX303LA sits at that damn ASUS splash screen for 30 seconds!! No good way to get in contact with ASUS about it either. Why the hell don't they have an official ASUS Laptop Support forum?

I also launched command prompt in admin mode and executed "powercfg /H off" to disable hibernation and remove hidden file completely. Probably does not do anything to boot time. It's just something I do on all my machines since I am using SSD and prefer clean boot to hibernate.

I now remember that I've seen similar behavior on another laptop. Here's what was happening there: the bay was switched to optical drive mode but had a weightsaver instead. Every time I restarted laptop, optical drive did not go to powerdown state properly and shutdown was not "clean". On restart it would stay with black screen for a long time - it was running chkdisk as I've found out later. Microsoft decided to completely suppress all output during that boot phase in Windows 8 for some reason. Shutdown and cold boot would clear the "failed powerdown" flag and it would boot quickly.
I had to dig through Event Viewer logs to figure out what was happening. Switched bay to HDD mode and everything was peachy.

Check your event log. Maybe there's something similar there.

Oh sick, now we're on to something. Where should I look in the event viewer?

    -- Update --

Cleared the event viewer and did a restart then saved off he system log. Nothing stands out to me really, if you wouldn't mind taking a look I'd appreciate it:

Adrianlee - thank you for sharing your order method. This appears to be the best way to get a UX303LN with FHD screen to the US.

One question - did you use the freight forwarder's "Assisted Ordering" service where you pay them and they buy the item, or did you buy it on the website you mentioned and then have it shipped to Parceliton?

Could you drop in a post an update if this worked out for you OK?

Thanks again - very excited to do this.

Does that mean it's something hardware level related? Is there any other way I can track what's going on?

There's an option in the BIOS for fast boot or similar.

    Have you checked that?

    Other things I've done:

Set Time to Display OS Options to "0", no change. - Startup Options - Change Time to Wait before Default OS Runs

Done selective startup without loading startup items, no change in post time.

Disabled all startup tasks, no change in post time.

Done safe boot, took twice as long to load in post time.

Checked "Boot log" and "OS boot information", no change in post time and don't know where to access this information now.

Nothing suspicious. I give up, sorry. I do not think it's necessarily hardware. Feels more like some other setting/configuration we missed. Is your storage controller set to AHCI?

Yea, in the BIOS it's the only setting available for the SSD. Is there any settings I should check within Windows?

Hello everyone, this is my first post on this forum even though I've been following several topics.

I am a happy owner of UX303LN with
    - i5-4210U processor
    - 8 GB RAM
    - Nvidia GeForce 840M
    - 256 GB SSD
    - 1920x1080 touch screen
    - Came with the sleeve and 2 adaptors.(1 for VGA and 1 for ethernet)

I absolutely love the machine, it is everything I expect it to be. Moving from a Asus G74SX, this laptop weighs like a feather :) My comments about the issues that are posted and some other stuff:

    - I never had the wi-fi issue. The laptop has been with me for 1 week though and I've just put it to sleep 4 or 5 times yet and no problem with waking up, I hope it goes this way.

    - The yellows are yellow.

    - It doesn't have a brown plastic border around the screen. Borders are black and all glass.

    - Keyboard doesn't flex. I saw the video on that review before I bought the laptop and I thought, the guy must have pushed damn hard on that keyboard. I don't think any keyboard would flex that way. Maybe because that was a pre-production model.

    - Battery life is like 8-9 hours. But it is just daily usage these days, surfing online and watching some series. I believe it would be something like 6 hours with heavy usage. (Eclipse, Visual Studio, Unity all together)

    - About the "processor working full speed when scrolling down", yeah, that happens. It goes up to 2.50 Ghz, hangs out there for 4-5 seconds and goes back down. For me, the touchpad is like heaven especially after G74SX. And I really haven't touched the mouse except gaming. Loving how responsive it is, feels like the touchpad I used on my friend's MacBook so the battery life it drains is worth sacrifising for me. But I'm interested in any solution that keeps the gesture abilities.

    - I played Fallout 3 for couple hours, the performance is pretty good. It barely gets warm during gaming and I never heard the fans.

    - I actually never heard the fans ever on this laptop. If I didn't put my ear on keyboard and heard that tiny fizzling sound, I'd say they didn't exist.

These are my comments so far. And I've got 2 questions:

    1) As far as I understand, I can increase the RAM to 12 GB when I need to. And for that, I need to replace the 4GB RAM that is not on board with a 8GB RAM, am I right? And what is the type of RAM I'm looking for, is there a type? :)

    2) My laptop has 256 GB SSD, I would like to have something like 1 TB HDD too if possible. Even 500 GB would be OK. Is that possible? Reading all the pages and seeing discussions about the HDD upgrade, my brain just kinda refused to understand the thing. So can someone simply explain?
