+1 to that. If there are any ASUS reps reading, PLEASE bring the 1080p to the US. In a 1080p configuration, the UX303LN looks like the first compelling, all-purpose notebook of the lightweight, ultrabook era.

Anyone have an idea what battery life difference you might see between the UX303LN i5 and i7 models? If noticible, it'd be great to see both the i5 and i7 1080p models in the US.

Agreed. The UX303LN in 1080p seems to have it all. Lightweight, powerful, good battery life, matte screen, basic gaming capabilities, etc. No touch screen but that doesn't bother me. Looks like ASUS North America doesn't even know yet, so we can still be hopeful since supposedly it's coming here in mid-August. Germany has a 1080p configuration announced already but I believe they're getting it earlier than us so let's hope that's why. Here are the tweets too/from ASUS:

    https://twitter.com/ShadowXOR/statuses/493792512121634819

EDIT: Looks like we just need to be patient and wait until mid/late-August for more info. They don't seem to have any information regarding an exact release date, or what models will be available. Hopefully the LA and LN models we've seen posted are just the tip of the iceberg, because that 1080p model is the best 13.3" laptop I've ever laid eyes on and I want it now!

It might be the best 13" laptop of all time (along with the UX32LN), but why the hell BROWN.

Seriously, am I the only one who has an issue with that?

Asus made very beautiful laptops so far. Blue, Glass, Silver, Black. Brown is definitely the least appealing colour of all time. Who wants a "smokey brown". Isn't that what your laptop looks like after one year if you are a chain smoker?

Personally I thought the blue they used was pretty ugly and am glad to see it gone (and have no interest in black or glass models). Their silver models definitely looked great though. I don't really mind the brown though since looking at pictures it's very subtle and overall just looks like a dark silver: http://www.asus.com/websites/global/products/5rAsFTJIgNgqRCb1/img/kv_part2.png

Yes, a more traditional grey silver would probably have been better, but from pics so far the color doesn't seem objectionable. Will have to check it out in person. Of course, I'm someone who liked Ubuntu's brown themes.

The HP Spectre 13t-3000 has a "brown" color. It has been very popular. I had one and the brown was not overstated and I thought it looked very nice. I can't really tell from the Asus photos, but the Asus "brown", looks even more subtle than the HP.

Just wanted to chime in on the questions regarding the UX301LA.

In Europe, this model has now been available with the same 15W CPU as the UX303LN, the i7-4510U.

Im in a bit of a dilemma myself atm. Im stuck between the UX301LA and the UX303LG/A....

Your list may have all of the models that Asus may produce, but the real question is which models will be available from sellers? For instance, only one model of LA is currently available for pre-order in the USA, the UX303LA-DB51T and one model of the LN which is UX303LN-DB71T.

I thought that Intel is requiring touchscreens in Ultrabooks - Thinner, touchier, more efficient: Intel tightens its Ultrabook definition | PCWorld
So this would prevent Asus from releasing the UX303LN-R4142H (the model without the touchscreen) in the US, assuming the agreement is limited to the US.
Does anyone know if that's right?

Great improvement. But still an issue. My understanding is that the EM "fix" results in reduced battery life. Many people love the 3200x1800 resolution and overlook the color issue. Anyway, definitely not for me.

The LA model is shown on Amazon as in-stock from a third-party vendor. It's damn tempting but I'm going to try and wait out the LN. Hope we see more reviews, or hands-on from a consumer that buys one (of either model).

EDIT: Not sure if they're reliable but ASUS online support told me the 1080p model would be available 'very shortly'.

Well, the LN is more expensive and generally nicer, but the two biggest differences is the current LN model comes with a quad-HD screen, and has a video card in it (which is the biggest piece to me). With the 840M you should be able to do some decent gaming (though nothing special). With the HD 4400 on-board video in the LA you can't do much unless you crank the resolution way down.

And I'm from the US so I'm not certain but pretty sure plenty of models of this are coming out in the UK.

I have always felt that an i5 was more than adequate for my use. But, if the UX303LN with 1920x1080, touch, i7 and 840M becomes available in the US, I might go for it, even at the premium price it will carry. I have absolutely no use for the 3200x1600 resolution.

Sounds like the 1080p on the LN only comes in non-touch. But the LA 1080p is touch and at some point should have an i7 option, but no dedicated video.

Other than cost, is there a downside to higher resolution? I also don't have a use for it, but don't want to overpay for something that has a downside. I'm strongly considering the UX303LN.

Downside is scaling problems, text is so small that it is un-readable. And increasing font size leads to other problems. And battery life is decreased. The FHD screens I have experience with are very sharp with great detail and color. Why go for a bucket of problems with an extreme resolution? And, other units with 3200x1800 resolutions have severe problems with color rendition, in particular, yellow is a greenish mustard yellow.

    Good luck, Jim

Well, you can watch 4K movies/videos...

But they barely exist. And a lot of applications' and games' UI do not scale well with resolution. Nor would you be able to game at 4K resolution on the GT 840M, especially with DDR3 VRAM. 1080p is already pushing it.

I don't think anyone has any UX303 in stock. The link you provided has a higher cost than one on Amazon from "Prime". I don't know what the return policy is for third parties on Amazon. Another option is Adorama. Lower cost than the one you link, and they have a 30 day, no question return policy.

And I just noticed that Amazon also has one available for pre-order at a lower price.

    Good luck, Jim

Thanks. But what do you mean by "do not scale well with the resolution." The panel is capable of 4k, but I can still set the resolution to 1080p, right? I usually don't run my laptops at the max resolution.

Running things outside of their native resolution generally results in poor quality. On top of that the does not scale well refers to Windows DPI scaling. A lot of applications aren't yet made to handle QHD screens so they look strange. Just Google Windows DPI scaling issues.

So there doesn't seem to be another thread about it so I thought I would ask here. I'll need a docking station for the UX303LN and the HZ-1, ASUS current model is poorly reviewed. They announced a new model the HZ-2 about a month ago but no one is selling it or talking about it, does anyone have any info on this?

Amazon.de removed the UX303LN from their store. They previously had three different versions on offer.

Wanted to preorder it, but suddenly it's gone? Also no UX303LA listed.

Asus UX303LA is now in stock in Amazon. (from other vendors like Adorama) (But 2 days ago, it was also in stock from directly Amazon, with a few stocks, I think those are sold.) So, I assume UX303LA is now available.

But UX303LN is still not available. A vendor named Reestahl is selling it on Amazon and says it will be in stock in August 18.

I am curious about release date of LN model.

Amazon still has the UX303LA available for pre-order. You have to select "More Buying Choices". I pre-ordered on July 26th. I received an Email a couple of days ago giving me a delivery date of August 11th. I don't think Amazon ever had any UX303LAs in stock.

I just noticed that Amazon also has the UX303LN available for pre-order.

You can pre-order from Amazon (Not one of the other sellers on Amazon), then cancel if timing gets tight. Amazon won't charge your credit card util it ships and it can be canceled any time before it ships. My guess is that both LN and LA will be readily available in the middle of August.

    Good luck, Jim
