Windows 8 reacts differently when it is shut down compared to restart.

The Shutdown option in Windows 8 is not a complete shutdown, but allows for a fast boot/Hybrid shutdown process.

This can be verified by reviewing Up time (under Task Manager>Performance Tab), it will continue as if the unit was never shut down.
A restart will reset this back to zero.

A restart is what is performed when updates are downloaded etc. I would periodically restart when the unit gets buggy or slow to respond.

Does anybody use a temperature meter to keep an eye on how hot the notebook is? Could you please suggest a good one (maybe something with a tray icon...)? Thank!

HWINFO has a sensors only mode with flexible configuration of what to display in tray (multiple tray icons).

A heads up for the RC6 version of CoreTemp, I got my Zenbook yesterday and installed CoreTemp RC6 but it completely froze the computer: see the discussion here: ALCPU Forums • View topic - Coretemp RC6 Freezes Windows 8 64bit
There is an RC7 version in the forum that should work (I will try it when I get home from work tonight).

Hello. I bought my new ultrabook this morning and it's wonderful ultrabook, but when i tried to connect to my WiFi router(TP-Link TL-WR740N), I couldn't do this and after all the devices, which was connected to router by WiFi, also didn't have an acces to Internet. I managed to solve problem by restartind WiFi router. However all was going on in a same way. Thanks for support.

Quoting myself, I have one more question!

I have the UX303LN-R4140H and I need to change the SSD drive.
    What units will fit?

From what I read a standard 2.5" 7mm will fit.
I'm thinking of buying the Samsung EVO 850 500GB.

Like aShtk said, it will fit, that is exactly the model I am using right now in my UX303, so you can go for it.

For the battery tips, you can find the informations on page 162, 163 and so on, of this thread.

    Hello Everyone,

Became a proud owner (now not so much) of a US edition ux303ln this past weekend.
Have been watching this forum from the time I first started to look for an ultrabook and was overjoyed when the fix for the yellow/mustard issue was posted. Soon as the fix came out I knew I had to get it. Was hoping to add to this thread with a review about my first happy days with it. But as my luck turns out I am writing cause I need help having used it less than a single charge. Issue: It wont turn on at all , the led on the power button as well as the capslock button remain on. Is this the case when the battery is too low for it to switch on?

Backing up a little I was flying out of the US (was there for a conference) via JFK so I had my friend in NJ pick one up for me and it worked great at his place. Flew back to India and it was working fine all of this evening. (I hadn't connected the charger yet). I drained the battery and waited for windows to give the 7% message (so I could connect the charger and safely apply the yellow fix as well as give it its first full battery power charge cycle). Just before I could connect the charger the screen shutoff. I connected the US power adapter to the international converter I have and the charging led (orange color) came on. Then I pressed the power button to power it up again and the ultrabook will not start.

Tried disconnecting the power cord and trying to switch it on but after 10 seconds of pressing the power button the capslock light goes off and then eventually the power LED too but comes on a sec after I release the power button. Have tried holding down the power button for over 2 mins and then trying to switch it back on, but after a second or so of seeing the power led go out on the key and releasing the power button the LEDs come on again. I can't hear any sound from the machine though not a fan or anything. I have a sneaky suspicion that it could be the AC power adapter. Tried to to see if I can smell anything burnt in it. But its pretty sealed up.

I am truly crestfallen :frown: having waited over 4 months to get my hands on it, I just hope I haven't bricked the ultrabook. It could be the AC power which I will try to use another at the office tomorrow. I really appreciate all the great responses and help you all have provided here and hope you can help me as well. @any one from ASUS on here - Please let me know what is the procedure in Bangalore to get it fixed if I have bricked it or if I need to replace the AC power adapter.

Sorry for the long winded post wanted to put in as much info as I can. Thanks in advance for your help.

I'd give it a couple of hours to recharge before trying to turn on. It probably immediately goes back to off because battery charge level is still critical.

Thanks ZugZug - Tried that, charged it before I left for work for over an hour and saw that the charging LED had turned green, still the Power Button and CapsLock LEDs are on and system would not power on. Brought it with me to the office and the charging status LED was back to being orange. Connected the charger again in the office and have charged it for over 2 hours now, still same result.

Finally gave in and have dropped it at a Asus service center. The technician there said it was either a display or a motherboard issue, since the laptop is charging and powering on. He has lodged the ticket as "No Display"
They will diagnose the issue (I'll have to call them to find out what was wrong tomorrow) and replace what is needed. Turnaround time 4 to 5 working days best case and upto 45 working days worst case (if the part is not available in India.) Fingers crossed it comes back working as it should have in the first place. Luckily I wasn't able to install the yellow fix else that would've voided the warranty. Phew!

    fayth;

I had the same problem. It did not like a MBR disk to install. Cried Uncle! Forced me to FORMAT and continue with GPT install.
I installed on a 128GB half height in the spare socket. Tired of fighting and just letting MS win.

Try using diskpart to clean the entire drive, then let OS handle the creation of partition.

I am close to buying the Asus UX303LN-DB71T (the US model with i7-QHD-Nvidia GT 840M-12GB RAM) and would like to install a Samsung SSD 850 Pro 1 TB (or similar 1 TB SSD) to replace the stock 256 SSD. Is that possible? (The techs at B&H were uncertain as to whether it would be compatible.) If it is possible, will this void the warranty? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

It is compatible. I have one working in mine. Cannot tell for sure about warranty. However, one should be allowed to open laptop without voiding warranty to access RAM and mSATA slots. And once it is open nothing stops you from replacing main drive. If you want to send laptop in for warranty service though, make sure to put it back to original configuration. That is my personal opinion.

Yes, it US version of UX303LN.
I posted a couple of times in this thread about my experiments with replacing main drive. Note that I installed retail Windows 8.1 on 1TB drive from scratch. Other people suggested ways to migrate OEM Windows that came on preinstalled drive. I keep the removed original 256GB drive so that I can quickly pop it back in if necessary.

I've been watching this thread for a while and also keeping an eye out for 303ln models in the U.S. and elsewhere to find the best version of this unique little laptop. After watching the German 1080p version of the LN sell out before the new year, my heart dropped a bit. BUT, today there are 2 new versions available with Broadwell processors. They both use the new i5 5200U (mislabeled i5 5500...but could be a typo for i7 5500U) and have 12gb/8gb respectively and the gt840m and 256gb ssd.

i don't think i can live with the yellow issues of the U.S. LN, but this really opens things up for all those who haven't purchased one of these yet...and who, like me, are dying to buy one asap. :)

Asus Zenbook UX303LN-R4318H 33,8 cm Ultrabook silber: Amazon.de: Computer & Zubehör

Many many thanks to all who have been posting and responding regularly on this thread. It has been the ONLY solid and updated source on this model that i can find!

Update: After calling the service center multiple times, finally got an answer that the mother board was toast and they are sourcing one to replace it. Will know by Tuesday when I will get it.
@Anyone from India - Have you guys tried adding a larger SSD to it at the service center - since it is anyway in the shop was wondering if that was an option?

I did it for a year or so on a full size keyboard, and it wasn't that bad. i don't look at the keyboard while typing, so it's less of an issue. i had a boss that would always type over my shoulder. the german keyboard threw him for a loop and he stopped. side benefit. ;)

i just can't understand how many versions of this machine they make...and WHY they release the versions they do where they do. Would Americans not want a great gaming ultrabook w/ a nice 1080 screen?

Anyone got a problem with the backlit keyboard?

I installed a samsung 850 evo 500gb (a few days ago) and installed a fresh copy of win8.1 (not cloning that will say) on it. I think I got all the correct drivers from asus homepage but today I got a problem with the keyboard. The backlightning only works on max brightness. If I lower it it starts to blink/flicker.

    Solution?

Can you still scroll up/down with the trackpad when uninstalling Asus Smart Gesture? (without 2 fingers of course)

If yes i will uninstall for sure, but if not well I dont think i can use the laptop without the ability to scroll with the trackpad

Agreed that it's hard to live with no scrolling abilities. I've resorted to using a Logitech T630 but I still prefer the touchpad on scrolling. I can't wait until a generic driver comes out for the focaltech touch pad. Utterly garbage with the massive hit to battery performance.

I was having the same issue as yours. And after checking by ASUS service center, they confirmed my bios battery worn out. I am wondering how can a new laptop with less than two weeks usage could have this problem? ASUS quality check seriously need to be improve.

so it became only worse.. now the wear level is 7.58%. should i be worried?
the laptop is used in a normal way, some times i carry it to school and it runs on the battery, discharging it to around 10%
