Make sure it's a model with either the 1600x900 or 1920x1080 display. The 1366x768 display will be mediocre quality-wise, and the 1366x768 resolution in a 15.6" screen makes things huge.

I think it's looks OK. It's just that metal strip below the screen that has to go :p

hey guys. I have the n55sf right now on my desk, it's not a final release, but a test sample.

Anyway, i will have my review in a couple of days. Let me know if there are any specifics you want me to address.

Make sure you address the screen: the resolution, whether it's matte or glossy, and run hwinfo to get the screen model number.

My asus N55SF is now shipped, guess I'll have it thursday/friday this week. Unfortunately I'm on vacation next week, so I'll probably not have much time for testing/using it. :(

Yes it's the version with MATTE fullHD screen, very interested in what display it is, I guess/hope it's an AUO B156HW01 V4 or similar quality display. I'd really love the 95% gamut.

Can any of you owners guys confirm the screen resolution? I've read on another forum that N55SF doesn't come with full HD but with HD+. Is that true?

Depending on stores/asus in your area of the world the available screen types will vary.

Here in Norway we have 4 types of N55SF with FullHD matte display available, and 1 type (the cheapest/lowest specced) with HD+ (1600 x 900) glare display. I have no reason to think the specs are wrong, but I'll be able to confirm that in 3 days or so.

My N55SF just arrived, and does indeed have an fullHD Matte display, first impression of the display is awesome at least. It's an samsung display with the ID SEC314C, googling that gave almost no respenses. Was hoping to find specs or something for the display.

edit; model name of the display is 156HT01-201.

The sound quality is superb, at least as soon as I turned off asus sonicmaster which distorted the music quite much, it's right up there among the best laptops I've listened to.
The max volume is not very high though, but fine for normal viewing distances.

The keyboard is actually better than I thought it would be, there is some flex on the right half of it though, but not enough to be bothersome.

The touchpad is huuuuuuuge, the surface is ok, although I've used many laptops with better/smoother surface. And the buttons are good and doesn't make loud clicks. Gestures works very good.

The glossy backside of the screen is an huge fingerprint magnet, I do not fancy that.

The laptop has an large 120Watt power brick which is needed to power this beast.

As for the screen; wish I had tools to measureit, because to me it seems awesome. The blacks are blacker than I've seen on any other laptop screen, the details in picture is awesome. Viewing angles are quite standard though.

The cooling system is VERY silent during normal office usage. Will try load soon.

The 750Gb Seagate harddrive is relative silent during use too, I might pop an SSD in later on. No there is not room for another HDD or mSATA :(

Nope, and probaly won't have time for it in a couple days.

    As for load testing;

The good news is: Noise levels are very low for an powerful laptop.

The bad news is: Low noise might not cut it when it comes to cooling! The processor throttled to 800MHz!!!! just after 10 secs or so of stresstesting, then it kept jumping from 800MHz to 2600MHz (max turbo with 4 cores active), no levels in-between. A jump this big is bound to cause lag issues if you get this behaviour when gaming. I'd rather see it clock down in smaller steps to find the "sweet spot" where it can handle the heat output, like on my DV6, which clocks down to 2.2GHz, then to 2GHz, which is usually low enough for the DV6's cooling system to keep up under stress testing.

    Further testing:

Throttlestop didn't fix the huge throttle jumps (throttlestop fixed it on my DV6 which uses the exact same 2630QM CPU).

Stresstesting the CPU only gives no problems, but GPU + CPU causes throttling after just 10 seconds, not due to heat I might add - since temps has reached around 80 C at that time, so it throttles for some other reason (power consumption could be the most likely limit).

I guess the only way it could be fixed is with an bios update - if it's even possible to fix it.

    Go here Official N45/N55 Club ? V2

They have the problem you've described but with the N45SF model and not the one you have which is weird. I've read only up to page 14 so far and still no problems with the N55SF model.

**Edit: I was wrong. They were talking about GPU and not the CPU. But then again noone mentioned any problems with the CPU. Maybe faulty driver? Bios update?

I will do some gaming tests when I wake up, the throttling during stress testing might not appear under gaming, since gaming is less demanding.

Battery runtime in battery saving mode with WLAN enabled seems to be around 3hrs, this is with minimum brightness. Minimum brightness feels a lot brighter than minimum brightness on most other laptops I've used though.

Compared to the HP DV6 6071 (i7 2630QM/AMD HD 6770 ) I have this is a bit low, with same settings the HP runs for around 5 hrs, and the HP even have a slightly smaller battery than the asus.

So my previous experience with asus still stands; asus really sucks at power saving on all laptops except those designed to be long-lasting (U series etc). They have something to learn from acer and even HP there ;)

@ OC-Freak what did you do to stress test it? And is the throttling issue so thing you would notice on a daily basis? Also I just want to confirm cause the pictures are not difinitive and haven't read anything about this but the keyboard is not chicklet style right?

Prime95 + furmark extreme burn-in for load testing. A very stressing combo and hardly any sandy bridge laptops pass this test without throttling. My HP DV6 actually pass this test with almost no throttling if I use the app throttlestop to disable Bidirectional PROCHOT.

The keyboard is not really chicklet style, the buttons are not separated enough. Still it's ok to type on. But won't win a price for being the best laptop keyboard. The media keys on the left might be bothersome in games too.

Here is an shot showing the CPU throttling during stresstesting. Notice that there are no GPU throttling.

as I understand from the screenshot, your current temp is almost @ max? I dont know if that's normal but reaching the max temp maybe is the reason as to why your cpus are shutting down? Just a guess here, i'm no way an expert :p Have you tried contacting Asus support with this?

Throttling is expected during the stress testing, it's just the way it's done that I do not like, why do mega jumps from 2,6GHz directly to 0,8GHz then back up to 2,6GHz, down to 0,8GHz which is the case most of the time. That is very spiky.

I'd rather see it throttle down in small steps of 0,2GHz or 0,4GHz at a time and then stabilize and slowly ramp up again if there is room for it, my HP DV6 with the exact same CPU does this.

During a session of SC2 there is no throttling on GPU or CPU, and SC2 is actually a pretty demanding game.

I have the most recent bios (came shipped with it).

Hopefully and probably the whole thing is an non-issue as long as it won't throttle at all during normal use. Stress testing doesn't reflect a real world scenario.
