So i'm guessing that i'll be receiving the 1920x1080. Are you happy with the 1600x900 screen?

Also, is the sound pretty decent? I'm buying this as a replacement for my damaged XPS15 which had great sound for a laptop.

I havent had a chance to play any games or play with colour brightness settings on it yet, so Ill have to get back to you on that one. It is a Matte screen which I much prefer over gloss.

The 1600x900resolution does suit the 15.6" screen size very well - I have 1900x1080 on my Sony F 16.4" screen and I find myself squinting a lot of the time as web pages and the like appear so small (you can zoom though).

Havent had time yet to test the sound either - I am expecting it to be good -seems to be a big selling point of the laptop (bang & olufsen designed sound system), and you do get a funky desktop subwoofer that goes with it thats about the size of a coke can, it even comes with its own little travel pouch!

Admittedly, the sound wasnt a major thing for me - I mostly use headphones/earphones anyway.

What drew me to the laptop was the GPU and price.

No your not being stupid... the information they have provided is rather confusing. Basically a screen has a maximum resolution. You can't display at a resolution higher than that of the screen on it, but it is possible to adjust the settings to display lower resolutions (I hear this isn't perfect though).

Anyway.... since your buying it online under distance selling rules... you can get a no quibble refund within 7 days by law. Do update us once u get it. Give it a try see if you like it. 1600X900 isn't a bad resolution for 15". Personally I can't decide whether I'd like a Full HD screen on my laptop or not.

More than likely you'll get the 1600x900 resolution as it seems to be the same model crimefighter above has bought. Anyway once you get your laptop, it would be great if you could let me know what the screen resolution is and if the screen is glossy or matte.

@ Crimefighter.... glad your liking the laptop. Do update us if you come across any issues.

Yep its fast, 675mhz standard clock too. Even plays fsx very well at full res! i was shocked. Its no slouch.

    Edit:
    Asus N55SF-S2342V
    I just tried 3d mark 2006

I got 12661! completely standard, no over clocking. Beats all gt555 benchmarks on the notebook check web pages

    i dont think the version 144 cores 525 MHz (GF116), 128 Bit DDR3 is faster then 144 cores 590MHz (GF106), 192Bit DDR3

That is true, but the quoted clock rate appears incorrect. The version in the N55SF appears to be clocked at either 650 or 675MHz and is a different architecture to the Dell. If you look through the benchmarks on the link I gave earlier then in some instances the Dell version is better (PCMark Vantage) and in others (e.g. 3D Mark 11) the Asus is better, so in reality there is probably not much overall difference in performance.

Yep 675mhz, my UK version n55sf beats all the scores on there in 3dmark 06. Ill try the vantage thing after ive slept.

The audio is awful to be fair, why would B&O put there name on this, once the lower frequencies kick in there is volume attenuation across the frequencies. My old dell never even even did that. Im guessing its the realtek sound card, bloody awful.

    Hi all.,

Im looking to purchase a mid-range gaming laptop for the brother-in-law and have pretty much narrowed it down to the N55SF or XPS 17 (or an outsider medion with 460 GTX but no optimus, poorer cooling etc).

I prefer the form factor of the asus tbf and have the option of getting the 1600x900 or 1080 screen at similar prices:

Will the 1600x900 screen give noticably better gaming performance at native resolution? Or are we talking single figure framerate differences betwwen the screens?

Is the 1600x900 screen good quality or does it really pale in comparison to the 1080 on this model?

Mtte vs Glossy on this model in terms of quality etc?

    Cheers guys!

I currently have a Dell that is ravaged by DPC latency spikes. I was wondering how is this machine in regards to DPC latency?

    Thanks

I think that if you'll go for the 17.3 inch of NS55SF which is 75SF , you'll benefit the 1080p quality . On small sizes notebooks , such N55 is , I consider the 1080p resolution as a con and not a pro because the 15.6 inch display is not enough to maximize the whole 1080p potential .
Regarding Glossy vs Matt - the question is what he's going to do with this notebook . For movies , pictures , video games , a glossy screen has much more vivid colors and it is much , much better in viewing experience than a Matt one , but if he's going to browse the Internet outdoors , then a Matt display would be more recommended .

When deciding between 1600x900 vs 1080p, there's two things to consider:

Some people complain that 15.6" is too small for a 1080p screen, but personally I find this to be absolutely absurd. The default Windows 7 text, font, icon size, etc, is fine for 1080p (in fact, icons are too big - I reduce the icon size on everything). Since the 15.6" is a smaller physical size, the 1080p is even sharper than it would be on a 17" (lower dpi on 17").

Aside from the size of fonts, usable desktop space, etc, there's also the native resolution gaming considerations you mention. 1600x900 vs 1080p really depends on the game - some games it's only a small decrease, but there's been a few games where I've seen a 4 - 5 FPS difference. Considering these games are already running at 25 - 35 FPS sometimes if I max out other settings, those 4 - 5 FPS make a difference.

That being said, I PERSONALLY would much rather play at a lower than native resolution for the benefits of a 1080p resolution for the purpose of web browsing, desktop work, image\photo editing, etc. The image quality difference between playing a fast moving 3D game at native resolution vs a lower resolution isn't as noticable to me as the difference between watching a 1080p movie at 1600x900 vs 1080p.

For glossy vs matte, there's not much to say since it's all opinion. Glossy will always appear to "pop" more when watching movies and playing games, matte will always be easier to see in bright lit enviroments or outdoors. That being said, the matte screens on the N55SF are fantastic and when set next to my old glossy HP or girlfriends glossy Acer, the ASUS matte screen holds it's own. (Of course, an older HP and Acer aren't the pinnacle of quality glossy screens, obviously).

I won't be near my laptop until later this evening (about 4 or 5 hours) but I'll check the DPC latency when I am. I haven't noticed any issues with audio popping or crackling. I know there's some DPC checking software online and I'll try running that to double check for you.

    Thanks!

The ASUS N55SF-DH71 on Amazon looks absolutely . I just don't want to purchase anything before I know if it has DPC problems.

(I discussed this with evancg by PM) So it looks like there are DPC spikes, but they seem to be part of Windows 7 itself dealing with wireless.

I think I will just buy this laptop from Amazon

    EDIT: I ordered it!

The HDD is something that can easily be changed provided you have the money to buy another one, boot times will be slower than on a 7200RPM drive of course, but if you are coming from an older laptop it shouldn't feel too slow.

For the lcd panel, i'll let a N55 owner answer for ya ;).

Using a cable, very low DPC latency, but some spikes ~2000, not too frequent.

Going to see what switching to wireless does.

    Hey there!

I bought the N55SF 3 days ago and i'm pretty pleased with it... exept with the fact that the CPU temperature goes up to 98ºC when playing crysis2...

I was wondering what max CPU temp do you guys get when playing a CPU demanding game?

    Regards.

Nice 3Dmark score! I get around 13600 with stock clocks and 1024x768 res (the default one in notebookcheck ;) Planning to overcock it at some point too!

Has anyone tried the N55SF EH71?

Seems like there has been mostly positive reviews on the other versions so I doubt that there would be much difference in this one.

    Can anyone confirm?

I have bought the N55SF on 1 Oct 2011, upgraded the OS to Window 7 Professional and increased memory to 8 GB. Everything worked fine until last month it hung up occasionally.

On 29 Dec, it finally failed to turn on the monitor and the screen was black. I sent it to the Singapore Service Centre and was learnt from the technician later on 6 Jan 2012 that he simply refreshed the BIOS and put the monitor screen back to work. I collected it back home on the same day.

However to my greatest disappointment the same problem happened again on 10 Jan morning, just 3 days after the warranty repair.

I am sending it for warranty complaint again today and hope that they can find out why such a high performance computer can fail so easily within first 3months of use.

Asus owes me and their users an answer to their product quality and service standard.

On the 19/11/11 I bought the above specified laptop. As the first laptop I bought from Asus, I was expecting a high quality product, just as it was advertised. I turned it on to set it up and as the first windows sound came on, the left speaker gave a distorted noise. At this instance, I thought it might be a fault of the system. So I put some music on, but exactly the same distorted, bad quality noise came out of the left speaker. No problem, although I spent 2 hours to set it up, I decided to return it next day. Pc World exchanged it with no problems and appologised for the inconvenience, as it cost me £20 to return it to the shop. Happy as I was, went home and set up the new laptop, crossing my fingers that this time it is working properly. After spending a couple of hours personalising my laptop and setting it up, I thought let's try the sound, just to make sure it's working. Well, this time, the right speaker blasted the same distorted noise, like an old speaker. Not just this, but the blu-ray rom was also misfit, the door on the bottom part was not closing properly. It was working fine, but again on a 600£ laptop, I would not expect such a problem. I was really disappointed, but because I spent all my saved money on the laptop and was busy with work, I thought I'll wait a couple of days before I sort it out... After a couple of days of use, the bass speaker stopped working as well. Seriously? After a couple of days? Besides, I am working full time, so I used the laptop only for a couple of hours after work and didn't even listen to music excessively, just the odd movies and tv shows...
This one, I did not want to exchange and reset the new one
again, as I thought it is a factory fault with all N55sf-s, so I thought repair would be easier...
Big mistake, I got it back with a factory reset, so I had to reinstall everything again and the speaker was still the same.... The bass speaker was fixed, but again the blu-ray rom and the built-in speaker was not even looked at. The speaker gave the same distorted and just crappy sound basically. So I sent it back
again and now it takes ages to repair it, although it just came out recently and its a
brand new laptop... I am not sure the so much advertised bang and whatever
speakers deserve such an attention. The other concern of mine is that if a 600£ laptop has so many problems from the beginning, how much do they last? Will I have to buy a new one in a year's time? Im not sure it was a good investment at all...
Anyone experienced the same problems? Any experience with Asus complaints?
    Thanks a lot!

The speakers are fine, I think you are hearing resonance from the keyboard. It happens when you listen to a human voice in particular. Cover the keyboard with your hand to see if this is the case. As for the sub, it's really unnecessary as it has a ringing sound due to plastic enclosure.

Thanks for your reply. I don't really thinks its only resonance from the keyboard, as it comes only from the right side. Either the speaker is not fitted properly in the case and the metal bit above it produces a resonance or the speaker itself... I am not sure. It is in the repair centre sincs mid Dec, they are waiting for a spare part, so I think the speaker is going to be exchanged...

    Question for fellow N55SF owners.

Have you noticed that the battery loses significant amounts of power when the computer is off?

At 1AM when I turn off my computer with ~100% battery and unplug the AC adapter, the next evening my battery is down by ~5%. If I unplug the battery, I don't lose any power.

Eh... The power button on the N55SF is linked with the keyboard... What if you press it by accident? Laptop goes to sleep while gaming online or something like that...
