It doesn't react if you press it by accident. It will turn off only if you hold it for a while which can't be by accident.
    So no worries there.

The turn off you meant was hard shutdown? In windows 7 you can assign the button to sleep/shutdown/hibernation in the power option, it doesn't react when these are assigned?

No, by "turn off" I meant "dedicated button action".

So by pressing it shortly, nothing happens. By holding it for 1 second, you initiate sleep/shutdown/hibernation action. And by holding it for 5 seconds or so, you initiate hardware shutdown.
So it's perfectly safe; you'll never activate this button by mistake.

That's a pretty good accident prevention that ASUS came up with.

I Have problems with screen refresh when I use the N55S with a Toshiba TV as second display.

The machine is i7, 8GB memory, GT-555M NVIDIA with latest driver 8.17.12.9610 dated 29/02/2012. Full HD 1920x1080.
The TV is 'HD Ready' (not full HD), connected via HDMI.

At first I had very bad problems, including blue-screen crashes, until I was told to set the resolution of both screens to the same value. Since I cannot change the resolution of the TV, I set resolution of the laptop to 1366x768. The second screen is in 'clone' mode, and I set the 'clone source' to the TV (not the PC).

With these settings operation is more-or-less OK, except that occasionally (quite often) the laptop screen 'forgets' to refresh and I have to remind it by clicking on the screen. The problem is most evident when I use Photoshop. I don't do any gaming, so I don't know how it does with games. Changing the clone-source does not help.

Help with this problem will be very appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Moshe

    Hi Guys,

I am planning to buy asus N55SL this weekend. I am concerned about the keyboard. I am ok with the looks but I wanted to know whether there is enough feedback for key press? Or are there some other issues with keyboard?

Are there any issues with wifi signal strength/lan adapter issues so far in general?

PS: I need to buy it online , so I cant test a real one until I buy.

Keyboard response is good. Like any other keyboard. The problem with this keyboard is that the keys themselves are somehow big and close to each other making them easy to accidentally press a key nearby. Definitely not for fast typing. I bought this laptop because of GT555m and that's why I had to sacrifice everything else.
Another problem with the keyboard on this model is rattling when listening to voices (somebody speaking on youtube for example). This happens sometimes - not always. Depends on the frequency I guess. At first I though it was speaker grill rattling but not.

As for normal typing you'll get used to. It makes harder to blind type though.

    P.S.
There is one thing you should know about WiFi too. In the device manager keep the Wifi card on maximum power level. I'm experiencing connection drops if not at max power. It's a known problem with this Intel card (Intel Centrino Wireless-N 1030)

    Thank you espresso.

I was really concerned about the keyboard response. So I will need some to getting used to the keys, right? I can live with that. Anyways I can't blind type even now.

I mostly use headphones, so I hope rattling voices wont be much of an issue. Does it happen when you use subwoofers?

I'll keep the WiFi card at max power. Do you experience any signal strength issues?

I really liked other specs and price/performance is really good. I always played safe while buying laptops as I always went for the brand and popularity[ previous laptops were Dell and HP].How is the reliability of Asus laptops, in general ?

Thank you espresso for your detailed reply.

    You're welcome.

If you mean separate speakers with sub, then no.

I don't use the supplied mini subwoofer as I find built in speakers just enough. They sound ok. And the sub is just a perk, you can't expect much from a small plastic box. I find it has a ringing sound due to undamped small enclosure. But sometimes it's better with it, depends what you're listening. Good for modern and electronic music.

    None. It's stable.

    I bought the laptop(N55SL) yesterday.. http://in.asus.com/Notebooks/Multimedia_Entertainment/N55SL/

The laptop is just brilliant. The Keyboard is unusual, and it will take some time to get used to, but the response is good(never been a fan of chicklets). I dint think it felt cheap.

It might be tough to work with numpad/function keys as those keys have different surface areas.

Trackpad was good, but a little too rough for my liking.

Sound quality and FHD screen are just awesome and I dint observe any rattling noises.

I really like the exterior and black piano finish. gives it a more classy look.

The ports are conveniently placed as there were fewer wire tangles

One thing I hated was the number of softwares on board as it took a lot of time to uninstall them.

Overall I am really pleased with my laptop and would recommend it to anyone

Was there a fix for this? I've picked up an N55SF and I'm having the same problem - the power button has to be pressed four times for the laptop to boot when running on battery.

Does anyone play newest games on this laptop? I noticed overheating problems this summer. During gameplay I would get a BSOD that reports an error with nvkflt.sys (Nvidia driver). My processor goes up to 98C while gaming which is a lot. I had to downclock GT555m and turn off Intel turbo boost. What are your temperatures?

I own the same laptop about a year but mine is 635m , recently BSOD with same error nvkflt.sys,0x116
im searching the whole internet seems the only answer is downclocking the GPU or send it to service
hope I dont need to rollback any driver to prove that. sigh

I solved my problem by cleaning the dust out of the heatsink. The problem was that gradually, the dust was piling up and eventually caused GPU to overheat. And since I couldn't open the back cover in order to access the heatsink, i took a can of compressed air and sprayed into the air duct a few times. A dust cloud came out of the laptop and now GPU doesn't overheat.
Asus implements poor cooling solutions in their laptops with good hardware.
