I dunno. After owning a handful of Atom N270 netbooks, I'm very much less than impressed. Sure 3D graphics will do farily well, but anything that needs a little CPU oomph will just dog. The Atom is not that game friendly. I owned an N10J for a while and it became frustrating. My Acer AS1410 with Core 2 Solo SU3500 and 4500MHD performs better for most games and tasks than my N10J ever did.
Yeah, I agree. For me personally, I don't care. I use my full size notebook for that. But I can see how that would be a big negative.
-
i got this on pre-order, can't wait for a proper review and finding out when the official US launch date is
-
Is the 3200HD better for a little gaming? -
This machine looks promosing and also great looking but i saw wait for reviews and also wait during CES i just know that they will change it around and probably put a CLUV in there, make it very powerful. But Asus being Asus they also will put a overclocking tool. I created the reviews and owners lounge for the machine http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=441775. Enjoy.
-
The HD 3200 is only 64 megabytes of video memory dedicated it can do some gaming but will struggle with certain things, the gma x4500 can do some gaming but also difficult. I remember the days with my old HP 636nr66, i had a nvidia 64 megabyte 7400 lol, i beat world in conflict and also call of duty 4 with tweaks and desktop drivers man those were the days.
-
HD 3200 definitely much better than GMA 4500MHD. It's just that with an anemic CPU, it doesn't matter so much. Atom is just too underpowered. The weakest Athlon64 X2 or Core 2 Solo/Duo will run circles around any Atom, dual core or not. I don't think the Neo is much better.
That's the problem, you get a Core 2 with 4500MHD or Athlon64 with x1250, or an Atom with 9300m or ION, or Neo with HD3200. There's very few with a more powerful CPU and GPU in a 12" or smaller form factor, and that cost less than $600. -
-
-
Yeah i know, we always want something else, I agree the atom is very underpowered it really sucks, i might consider just to get the UL30 due to the better processor, to bad it doesn't come with 9300m or something.
-
I just don't want a netbook, those machines really stink, it just reminds me of my celeron days, times i don't want to remember.
-
In a 12" chassis they should be able to fit a CULV CPU and a dedicated GPU. SU7300 + 9300m GS is fine by me. Wonder why nobody makes such a combination?
-
Something tells me CES coming Jan. 7-10 is going to be very interesting this year. -
I just realised the 1201N is already on sale here in Israel, costs around $815 though...
-
yea, according to the asus cs rep i spoke with today, the 1201n has been released here in the states last month... but of course, most cs reps in general are pretty clueless about these things, so that's that... i called up the vendor i pre-ordered from and he told me it is on sched for ~15-18th delivery this month...

So far so good!
Wish I understood what he was saying but......anyway from what I can tell with my very observant eyes.
1.It looks great
2.It's a fingerprint magnet(little torn here, not sure if I care or not)
3.It looks like it could have a backlit keyboard( I think!)
4.Power brick is tiny.
I hope it performs as good as it looks.
Thanks for the vid. -
Use google translate. Reads fairly well. It is only part one of two though. Second part due up soon.
-
yes, Gtranslate worx good enough... can't wait for 2/2 !!
-
OK got Gtranslate downloaded to chrome and it does work great.
What will they think of next!
Can't wait for part 2. -
I think the article is a little overkill though. Waaay too much detail people don't care about. The dude's got a thing for that power supply being so small. It's a NETBOOK you idiot. Just because the laptop is bigger, it's still basically the same guts as a 10". I bet it's the same charger used on their other subnotebook PC's.
-
What we need are raw performance numbers.
See how well it handles HD playback and games.
I look at this as being a entertainment laptop thats extremely portable and not too expensive.
Sort of what I'm looking for.
I'ts either this or the HP 311 but I'm a little turned off by the ION LE the HP has.
I know LENOVO has the S120 with the ATOM 270 ION any others announced that would compare with the dual core ATOM 330 ION found in this ASUS. -

http://www.liliputing.com/2009/12/roundup-of-asus-eee-pc-1201n-reviews-benchmarks-impressions.html
Battery life sucks, 2 minute boot time (for real?) Atom processor...all that for $500.
No thanks. -
I hope.
We need to see more reviews.
Not a good sign though. -
I'm still holding out for the Ferrari One. Athlon64 X2 1.2GHz, HD3200 with 1366x768 11.6". Something tells me the Athlon64 will still run circles around the Atom 330, but HD3200 vs ION still have a challenge between them. I can't find firm benchmarks of the HD3200 yet with that CPU.
-
Maybe it's time to look a something like the ASUS UL30Vt-X1 or something similar. It's a little bigger and cost's more $$$ that I'm looking to spend but CULV and a 210M GPU are looking real good.
ACER Ferrari is going for like $600 I think -
Yeah, I'm starting to realize you have to go with a 13" to get what we're asking, for the time being at least. Maybe this time next year will be a different story. But I don't see a CULV and decent dedicated GPU in a slim 12" for a while. I had hope for the Ferrari One, but the gaming benchmarks aren't faring a whole lot better than a 4500MHD.
-
Yeah it's a little disapointing that trying to game with a 3200HD is not that great.(I sort of suspected that).
Might just wait for CES in Jan. to see what's coming in netbooks for 2010 but I really don't want to wait long to get a new netbook/laptop.
I guess I just might have to hold on and hope for the best.
The Asus 1201N is still my top pick to get, just have to wait for more reviews to determine what it is really like. -
I still have hope for the 1201N since the CPU is based on the nettop Atom 230 instead of the netbook N270. Atom 230 and 330 support 64-bit where N270/N280 do NOT. It'd be nice to see the Eee 1201N benched against the Ferrari One.

Thanks for the link!
Not sure if it's the video but games look choppy even though the reviewer says they are fully playable.
Wish he had FRAPS running so we could see FPS.
But if it can play ASSASSIN's CREED and COD4 that's fantastic.
Only thing wrong I could see is the 2 minute boot time(YIKES!)
So far so good, we just need better vids on the gaming aspect to see if it's what we are looking for. -
-
Beleive me I hope the 2 minute boot time is wrong but that is the only thing to go by for now.
That review is in French so maybe something is lost in the translation -
I thought the fps of the game in the video looked smooth TBH. But yeah, FRAPS would have been nice.

im pretty impressed by the game performance of this compared to the mini 311.. it could be quite deceiving comparing the 3dmark scores of these 2 netbooks but it appears that extra cpu core helps it out big time in real world gaming.
-
Well, I'm going to hold out to see what CES has to offer this year and see if ION 2 laptops are actually shipping. They are supposedly supposed to support Intel CULV Core 2 CPU's (i.e. SU7300). That would be a nice combination - SU7300 & ION 2.
-
this netbook is looking nice. Its either this or the ul30vt.

Hmmm, sounds pretty good. The CPU wouldn't overclock though, that's disappointing. The N270 could OC to 2.0GHz no problem for most people. I'm curious to see if someone can get it to work.
THey also mentioned 32-bit OS. I wonder if North American version will get 32-bit or 64-bit. It's stupid if they go with 32-bit consdering it can accommodate 4GB. I hope this doesn't mean they don't have driver support for 64-bit. -
-
I just want to know the battery life when playing a 1080p movie.
-
iirc from one review, it's a little less than 3 hrs. of continuous playback @ full brightness...
-
Oh man, I'm so tempted. Anyone interested in an Acer 1410 Core 2 Solo SU3500? LOL.
-
Here's another review of the 1201n:
http://hothardware.com/Articles/Asus-IonPowered-Eee-PC-1201N-Review/
Pretty positive overall!
Personally have to decide between this, the Acer Ferrari One, or the MSI U230. I might wait until CES just to see what gets announced, but frankly, don't think I can wait until ION2 hits the market.... -
Damn that sucks I was hoping for like at least 7 hrs
-
Well, it seems it all depends on your needs. The ION seems to kick butt with games. The MSI U230 and Ferrari One with Athlon CPU's and HD 3200 graphics don't seem to fare a whole lot better with 3D graphics than a 4500MHD, but have a more powerful CPU than Atom.
From what I've been reading, it seems ION 2 machines won't hit the market until at least Q3 this year . It will be announced at CES, but manufacturers are only just starting to sell ION notebooks/netbooks. I thought it was pretty quick to come out with ION 2.
EDIT: HOLY COW! 1201N SOLD OUT ALREADY at NEWEGG! -
