You guys read it wrong. The problem is that the card doesn't support temperature variations well. It doesn't have anything to do with stuttering and heat....
-
I have g2s-a1 and I have really high GPU temp
when loaded it goes around 90..
is this normal? -
-
oooo glad i read this! was about to buy a g1s x1 or g1s x3. Maybe will stick to acer =p
-
The GPU can get hot ok... but the laptop is build to resist such temperatures. It might "scare" people: "whoah, 90°C while playing a game !!" but it's just normal
and like JCMS says: "You guys read it wrong. The problem is that the card doesn't support temperature variations well. It doesn't have anything to do with stuttering and heat...."
The G1S his heat is NORMAL and the G84 and G86 chip problem is a bit "blown up" I think -
Sorry but, 90* is way too hot... Especially considering it's only an 8600M GT. They designed the thermal management very poorly in both the G1S and especially the C90S. C90S gets to 100* and above because they designed there bios to never turn the the GPU fan on unless the CPU gets hot. Just plain stupid really.
-
-
It may work fine at 90, but for how long? Heat kills electronics pretty quick. Asus really should have been able to keep the temperature down a little better then they currently are.
I'd like my C90S to last longer then a year, but with my 8600M reaching 100* sometimes during gaming, I know it's only a matter of time before it finally quits. The thing that kills me is there are FOUR fans on the back of this thing and I've got a giant hole in my ACE door to get more air flowing but it doesn't help because of Asus crappy thermal settings in the bios. Anyway, I don't want to drift this into yet another thread about the C90S so I'll stop here. -
SO... umm should i be asking asus for a new gpu or what? Cuz 90+ does get pretty hot and starts to cook my fingers. And just having the big fat defective logo slapped on my GPU is worrying, I dont want it to fail when my warranty expires.
-
-
you are all talking about temperatures around 90 º / 96º , but mine with sleep fix goes to 110 º , and everything clean even with a keyboard cooler made by me and a zalmanNc1000.
Something is very very wrong . -
Anyone know if F9S is affected? Mine has the 8400M G.
-
It is unclear whether ASUS GPUs are affected.
Edit: but it's becoming quite likely:
http://www.engadget.com/2008/07/31/figuring-out-which-nvidia-gpus-are-defective-its-a-lot/ -
So now that they've basically confirmed this....what the heck can we do about it lol? I don't see how Nvidia couldn't have foreseen this if it affected the older 7 series line as well. Though, honestly my laptop has been running fine for a year so far with a 8600 GT... But hey, if I can get something free out of this, sign me up!
-
Well there's little to do unless ASUS a) issues a statement saying that the GPUs are affected (which we are still not 100% sure that they are), and then either b1) releases a new BIOS, or (highly unlikely if you ask me) b2) issues a recall...
Besides that, we can just wait for the GPU to break down and hope that it'll happen during warranty. -
The standard warranty is 1 year free of charge and 2 years on the "international" program or whatever?
-
US: international pickup and return w/ overnight shipping for 2 years. Free of charge.
1 year accidental damage coverage (just 1 claim will be accepted) -
seems as nvidia is refusing to recall the notebooks affected, and on top of that they just made an aggreement with HP to split the repair costs for the notebooks affected... well there we have it, nvidia is doing everything in their power to avoid fixing their mess, and it looks like notebook manufactureres are following suit to avoid very high repair costs...
search news.google.com for nvidia recall -
I trust that ASUS will please its customers the way it always does.

Mine's running at 57 C doing basic internet browsing with the XtremeG Mobile drivers. When gaming it gets really really warm but I usually don't have problems unless the surface underneath it is less than optimal. It also runs alot hotter on warmer days, it's like 70 degrees Fahrenheit right now.
-
Mine idles at 57C, but it gets as high as 100C! Never slows down though.
-
Looks like this has to be stated again. The fault that nVidia published is NOT causing the GPU to overheat. It is a fault in the core which means that the core will resist fewer heating up-cooling down cycles, than it would with a fault-free fabrication process.
The fact that the G1S gets to these high temperatures is another problem, e.g., improperly designed cooling system / bad thermal paste / improper contact with the heatsink. I don't really know what the source of the problem is, especially since some G1S are affected and some not; so these are just examples of possible causes. -
-
Oh yes, that is definitely true. Bad cooling design (or whatever the cause is) resulting in wider range of temperatures certainly worsens the problem.
But from many replies around it seemed to me that some people blame the G1S overheating on the nVidia fault -- which is not really correct, and I wanted to clarify the causality. -
I just wish I could get it to idle at 52C. I like seeing low temps regardless
But I'm afraid to tinker in there because I don't want to break those stickers. -
Sorry if this question has been asked before, but I haven't been updated on the notebook scene for a while
Can someone update me on whether Asus has released a Bios fix to get the GPU fans to run faster? Thanks in advance!
-
I don't know, but you can just check support.asus.com to see if there is a new BIOS version for your notebook.

manually wire the fans up

can we just demand for new GPU???????????????
-
I regret buying my g1s
, use to run awsome but now its getting slower and can barely play cod4 on 800X600 (never o/c), spent $3200.00 on it (NZDollar) could have made a awsome PC set up lol ah well
-
Why is it running slower? Did you clean the dust from it recently? Maybe it's overheating. Computer don't go running slower for no reason.
Also, good OS maintenance practices are important: cleaning up temporary files, registry, etc. Are you running a lot of apps in the background? Make sure you're not infected with malware, as well.
-
I dont know why its running slower
, shouldn't have much dust in there...Got all the registry cleaners and what not, got barely any apps running in background and no malware.. and i also had a computer tech guy give it a check over to make sure its running fine but he done nothing to it as far as i can see. Ah well, might sell it while it has the warranty and build a beast of a machine for my design corse next year at uni

I just got a response from asus support
Dear Valued ASUS Customer,
The announcement of nVidia only confirms issues with certain batch released, we are in the process of determining if our models are affected by this announcement.
We will make an announcement on our website once we have more informaiton about the matter.
Best Regards,
ASUS Notebook Technical Support Team
Hopefully i can get a new notebook, cuz even though the defect doesn't make the chips hotter its still too damn hot burns me >:-(
-
I'm also trying to see if I can get a new notebook LOL , cause my g1s goes to 110 º . I'm afraid it won't last another year ... .
I don't mind to pay the difference between g1s and G50 hihih .
And I quote :
" Asus guarantees that the Asus Notebook that you have purchased are free from defects in materials or workmanship under normal use during the Limited Warranty Period "

Ok, here it is what my tests showed:
Idle temperature - 62/63c
under load (3dmark bench) - 85/87c
under load + clock (600/1200/700) - 95c
I guess I am goodno strange overheating so far after 1year of usage
p.s. driver 177.79 in win XP -
Again, this problem does not cause overheating... so you cannot use the temperature to diagnose the problem....
-
I wish I could get mine to run cooler regardless. It gets to 100C in COD4, 96C in The Witcher, and 94C in Overlord...
-
Well, Dell and HP have brought out their list of defective notebooks:

When is Asus going to do this... -
I really hope I can get my 8600m maybe swapped for a 9500m for free seeing as how no matter how many times they replace the 8600m, its still gonna be broken...

What RMA?
ASUS have not even said officially they have laptops affected by this issue. And as I've said already on several occasions, not even Dell and HP, who acknowledged the issue on some of their laptops, will not replace the GPUs unless they die. So there's not much chance of ASUS doing it, either, even if it does acknowledge it.
And in fact, we're not even sure they should acknowledge anything. It's all just a big rumor with little clear, confirmed information to go on. -
Just wanted to say that i own my G1S-B2 since early early January and the machine has been very kind to me. The temperatures do get a little bit hotter than my roommates HP (hes got a 8400GS) but no where close to what i was getting with a X1600 in my past TM8204 from Acer. The Acer could fry eggs during a CS:S match.
There is an issue with heat build up though. Playing Bioshock on max with the lappie on my lap can get hot after 2-3 hours. This was somehow fixed by newer drivers from laptopvideo2go.
Is there any real threat to the GPU or the whole laptop as a whole? -
well, if your GPU stops working then you won't be able to see anything from your computers....
I've stopped caring about this issue because the machine is a little over a year old yet I have YET to hear an actual story about how a G1S died and needed to be RMA'd. And this is the internet, so you KNOW if it happened it would be reported online. -
Vlad_I, which driver are you using from laptopvideo2go that fixed your heat issue?
-
Mine must be alright because with th extreme G mobile drivers I'm at 76 C playing Guild Wars at max settings. Granted it's not an intense game but that's not bad at all.
-
Today, my G1S-B2 died.
I came home to a white screen, turned the computer off.
When it booted back up into windows it complained about a BSOD.
Then a few seconds later, artifacting, video corruption and frozen.
Turned it off, back on again, and was faced with a blank screen (black but with backlight on). HD light still flickers as if its booting, the asus in the little oled display still shows, but no video.
Tried an external monitor as well, nothing.
Will call asus tomorrow since their lines are closed for the night. Pain in the *** since I start my last year of university on monday and will have no laptop for a while I'm guessing. -
sux dude. if you're in America you should have it back within two weeks.
