hey MadFerIt, so you sent your G1S in because of the high temperatures causing stuttering and unplayable games? The GPU did not die out?
can we just RMA for the reason saying that its running too hot?

To clarify for the Nth time: the nVidia problem does not cause overheating; what it does is it weakens the GPUs resistance to heating/cooling down cycles. So if your temps are higher than they should be it is not the fault of nVidia, but of the ASUS engineers who did not design the cooling system properly. Of course, larger temps will worsen the effect of the fault, which may show up sooner.
Also, yes, the G84M was I believe on the list of affected cores. -
Hey guys,
I'm scared that my 8600M GT in my G1S is dying also..
I started a topic about my problem in the "Gaming (Software and Graphics Cards)" forum:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=307836
they advised me to contact my supplier..
These are the 3DMARK 06 scores I get (NO OC/OC):
Normally I should get in the 4000 now my score is cut in half ! And It's not a driver problem, I tried a lot of driver they all give the same results, I removed everyting (ntune, rivatuner, driver,..) that has something to do with my GPU and I did a clean install again.. same problem.
I noticed my bad performing GPU a few days ago, I was playing HL2 and it suddenly started to stutter, since then I can't play any game any more (my fps are sooooooo low, even with a high overclock).
I have read that Asus changed the G1S motherboard for a G1Sn one, so if I send my G1S in for repair I will also get a G1S with a G1Sn motherboard in it..? -
I do not know whether the GPU failing due to this infamous (albeit mostly rumored) nVidia fault would cause such intermediate stages where the GPU performance is reduced. But it might.
Are you monitoring your temps? Did you try cleaning the heatsink fins+fan of your computer? Maybe the GPU is overheating and throttling down more, due to dust buildup.
As to receiving a G1Sn mainboard if you RMA, that's not at all guaranteed. Although you could try to push for it, explaining that you suspect faulty GPU and suggest that the new G1Sn GPU is less likely to be affected. (not sure even if that is true) -
very strange. And there is NO dust in it, already checked that.
And the GPU isn't downclocking either... -
Are you sure it doesn't have anything to do with the driver's performance mode ? There are 3 stages that the 8600 has:
1: Standard 2D
2: Low performance 3D
3: High performance 3D
Although it seems you are running on high performance 3D (according to the images you posted), I very much doubt it. I have seen my G1S refusing to switch on High performance 3D mode sometimes (usually after cold restart...I'm a developer, it happens). Use RivaTuner's monitor.
Btw, @E.B.E. I've done a GPU fan mod on my G1S, I have no temperature problems when gaming, but I definitely have voided my warranty (a couple of times). Still, I play everything on med-high without shuttering for hours going to 90C GPU in worst cases (82-84 best cases). I'm still worried about this nVidia fiasco thing, can I RMA when (and if) my GPU dies ? -
so what reason can we send in the laptop for?
or we don't need a reason? -
Technically you cannot send your laptop in, as ASUS has not agreed AFAIK to replace the GPUs on the basis of the possibility that they are affected by the fault.
And to Predator_MF, I guess they are free to refuse service due to the mods. Still, they are usually relaxed about this sort of thing; for instance, I know they serviced laptops with upgraded CPUs. I do not know however if they will service a laptop modified in such an obvious way as with cooling mods. -
EDIT: But rivatuner is saying that the core clock is at 513 MHz but It's at 475 MHz... -
Rivatuner has some issues with laptop clocks, it shows slightly more than it actually is. Anyway, you are right, this is weird.
I don't think it's a hardware issue, more like driver or OS related problem. If you have some spare storage (separate partition) you can try with fresh new install of XP or Vista (XP would be faster I guess).
PS: I've experienced few power-outages when playing COD4 a couple of times, although I was running on Max. Performance CPU and the clocks of the GPU were still on Performance 3D (I could see that on the OLED), the FPS dropped about the half of the usual. What I'm trying to say is, it may also be a power supply/management issue. -
arent power/management issues not so uch easier to solve than hardware ones? I guess asus would tell it if there was such a solution, in stead if they were to pay for the return of their own hardware.
-
And like I said, this problem suddenly occured, I started HL2 (the day before everything was working normal on my Vista x64 on my Seagate HDD) and my HL2 was stuttering like hell and since then my GPU is acting weird, I started cod2 -> same problem, I started cod4 -> same problem..
And I don't think something software related can lower the fps so drasticaly (I was getting 6fps in cod2 with LOW settings)
And btw if the problem is hardware related so that means I have to send it to Asus, my eye (under the touchpad) stopped working also a few days ago so than they can repair both !(Hmm now that I'm thinking.. my GPU started acting weird a few days ago AND my eye under the touchpad isn't glowing any more also since a few days, this is coincidence right.. ?
)

Well, don't underestimate the power of software/driver bugs. I would say give Predator MF's suggestion a shot.
One first thing to try would be a GPU driver reinstall (sorry if you already mentioned doing that).
Also, you could try turning off PowerMizer, maybe it's a PowerMizer bug. -
I was also using the 3D view window in ATITool to check the video card. Usually it is at ~200-250 fps but then after the problem occured it went down to 120fps.
One odd thing, sometimes there would be like ten duplicates of the svchost.exe prorgam and taking up about 300mb space in total.. that's kind of odd. As soon as I forced some of them to close the 3D view window in ATITool went back up to like 270fps? Oddness..
Anyway, I did a fresh reinstall from the factory CD and now it seems to be fixed.. 3dmark06 score is at 4050 again. Odd, eh?
A totally unrelated thing, the Realtek Audio icon in the task tray notifies me every few seconds that "An audio jack has been plugged in" or "An audio jack has been unplugged" even when i don't touch it. What on earth? -
The svhost.exe thing is pretty much related to the nVidia driver, it's the service that manages the drivers probably. From time to time I get that too, one of my svhost.exe's (exactly the one that the driver runs in) starts running with high CPU, powermizer stops responding (not switching when turning on/off any 3D program). After restart I get everything working fine. This is software/driver issue
-
Euhm, a few minutes ago, I boot up my G1S, after startup my screen turned black for like 20 seconds. (It was a cold startup). Can this be related to the nvidia problem? There is really nothing wrong with the driver that I'm using !

So I'm really late to this party but I'm glad I finally checked this site. I have a G1S which I got around May or so of '07, right after it was released as I was initially going to get the first G1.
Any way, for about the last 3 months I've had random shut downs. It's been strange because it hasn't been an instant power off, it almost seems as if the laptop is shutting down but it's pretty much instant - there's no Windows shout down screen.
It usually happen after the G1S has been on for the better part of the day, and most of the time it would occur while exporting images from Lightroom, so basically saving out a batch of images to jpegs, nothing really demanding, at least I thought. I would also be listening to music in iTunes so for a while I thought it was maybe an iTunes but I'm more suspect that the system is overheating.
I downloaded the latest drivers video card drivers from Asus but it still randomly happens. I've resulted to having a fan blow on my laptop while working, which is annoying to say the least.
I bought this laptop in Canada, but have been in Australia for the year. I'll be back in Canada in January and was thinking of brining it in to Asus. I believe I have a two year international warranty so I should still be covered. I can't send it in now as I need my laptop as a means of income since I freelance. It'll have ot wait until January. I may just send them an email now though to at least document the issue with them.
This is a bit annoying as I bought this laptop not to game but to do work. Hopefully Asus can resolve this for me. -
jb22, if you suspect overheating you should monitor your temps, and if they are large, then you should probably cleanup the computer. There is a generic cleanup guide in the Info Booth, as well as a G1S disassembly guide that can help you. You need to clean the fan and heatsink fins. -
Some news on the issue: http://www.pcpro.co.uk/news/230097/has-nvidia-problem-hit-hp-desktops.html
The last part of the article is especially informative -- it shows that nVidia may not have the full blame for this... -
http://www.pcpro.co.uk/news/news/220971/
isnt this more intresting? If nvidia will pay for their bad gpu's to the computercompanys, why wont asus be so kind to give their dearly-beloved consumers a new gpu?
Itll take time I guess, but theres hope -
That's what I meant by the last part of the article. I should have added "and the links therein".

Yesterday in the evening, I sended an email to Asus support, this morning I already had an answer (very fast !).
I described all the problems I have with my 8600M GT and they say the best thing I can do first is make a recovery (install windows again, my windows is just a week old but I will try it out later today.) if the problem still occurs I have to send it in to repair (via http://www.asus.nl/rma).
They also say that it's not neccesairy to send remaining equipment with the laptop, do they mean it's not neccesairy to send the HDD and such with the laptop (so take it out..)?
And if I send my G1S in, for how long will it be according to you guys? -
I guess they mean adapter and perhaps battery, although if the problem is clearly not connected to the HDD you could keep it.
Wishmaker had a bad experience with ASUS NL when he sent his computer from Luxembourg. I don't know how it works from Belgium. You will probably wait a couple of weeks (hopefully not more than 3). -
Does removing the two pieces of tape on the plastic CPU cover void the warranty? I've kept them to point out to Asus techs that their own manufacturing process may be the cause of my random shutdowns.
-
Ok guys I'm on my old Windows vista right now: I changed my HDD to my old one (the original) with vista home premium 32 bit on it, check my 3DMARK06 score:
(OLD HDD with vista home premium 32 bit on it -> 3DMARK06 few weeks ago on this HDD (haven't changed anything on this HDD) was in the 4000 now as you can see 2574)
(And this is the score that I already posted -> new HDD with vista ultimate 64 bit on it)
So this means the problem is Hardware Related and not Software Related..
I'm gone send my lappy to Asus, byebye good old 8600M GT -
hope for you youll get a new mombo with 9600M in it...
good luck (are you sending old hdd and original OS installed on it and battery too?) -
And what would be the best thing, fill in the pickup form at www.asus.nl/rma or let my computer store handle it?
But first of all I will search a replacement for my G1S (need a computer every day for school), maybe the 4-5 years old Acer laptop of my sister lol (that thing is soooooooooo terrible slow)
@ simonov: thanksbut actually it's the 9500M GS that's on the G1Sn motherboard
And yeah, should I push Asus a little to get the G1Sn motherboard with the 9500M GS 512MB DDR2 on it or the original G1S motherboard with the 8600M GT 256MB GDDR3 on it?
The 9500M GS is a little bit slower but runs a little bit cooler (and the 8600M GT starts to stutter at 95°C and it can get EASILY that high..), still don't know what the best thing is I can do -
I suggest you deal with them directly, to avoid additional downtime.
On the other hand, in theory, dealing via the store will add an extra layer of accountability if things don't get solved. But realistically, I don't think that helps much.
Also, you could try calling them first, so that they know of the problem. When I did my RMAs a couple of years ago, I didn't do it via internet -- but things might have changed.
You could try to push for the G1Sn motherboard if you think it helps. But they may not agree. -
and what if I ask to apply a some thermal paste on the GPU? They won't do that, right...?
-
They should certainly do that if they disassemble the computer to replace the GPU.
-
When my G1S was new, there was also thermal paste applied on the GPU?
I thought on the CPU, yes but I wasn't sure about the GPU.. -
I would guess it would overheat without thermal paste, so yes, it should have thermal paste (or a thermal pad depending on the design).
Even if they replace everything, they still need to put the heatsinks in separately, which means thermal paste. -
I read somewhere (dont ask where
) that 9500 is cooler, although a little weaker, but because its cooler, you can OC it higher, so eventually there wont be much diffrence in quality.
-
I bought my G1S Dec-2007 and just read this and i'm concerned if I have a GPU that is not performing properly.

Has anyone managed to con a whole new upgrade notebook out of Asus for their G1S? Maybe even paying a bit for a upgrade?
-
-
Boo, I only have 3/4 a year coverage left on my notebook so I don't think I'll be sending it in 2 more times. Gonna see what I can do though. Maybe I can sent it back requesting a 8600 again so it'll count as 2 RMA's and hope that the 8600 explodes for a third RMA!
-
Well my G1s worked fine, even with the 8600 GT, no bluescreens, no reboots.
Exept these yucky noise like cheeping from the CPU/GPU....
My NB going RMA second time on monday ^^ -
on that topic, where are you? If you're in Canada and can visit the Repair center in Markham, you should. They're really nice people and if you talk to them, they might help you talk to Asus
-
We have a new RMAing Comp. called "Let Me Repair" in Germany.
I gonna see what happens these time, cause Asus wonna replace my G1sn Mainboard back to the std. G1s Mainboard. -
i have one burning question, how do i know when its time to send in for RMA?
I have quite a few episodes when vertical lines appear on the screen while watching a full screen movie (mainly) and gaming. The last music/sound will drag on like Youuuuuuuuuuuuu. Then it will reboot. No BSOD even with auto-rebooting turned off. No error logged into system log. I am running XP sp3 though on dox optimised drivers.. never had this problem in the past before.. -

Back up your data fast and then send it in. Best to get it sorted rather than being confronted with the eventual death of the GPU and the veritable shock of not being able to boot up.
