Brand new owner here! Just moved from a Macbook Pro and I think I've made a good choice so far.
First off: Does anyone know if I can get a replacement driver disc or Backpack?
I ordered an open box from Newegg, the box is less than perfect and my drivers CD came loose out of the sleeve and scratched severely as a result, also I did not receive a backpack with the orderOn the bright side I ordered it thursday and UPS dopped it off Friday using ground shipping (next day service!)
Minor quibbles aside, the G1 looks much better in person than it does online. I'm surprised by the weight of it, pretty heavy compared to the MBP but solid feeling as well. Also releived that my screen has no dead or stuck pixels, this is seriously one of the few of many LCD products I own that does not have any bad pixels.
I was shocked that my 15" sleeve does not fit the G1 either... I'm a bit scared of the glossy surfaces getting scratches!
The first thing I did was format the Hard Drive into 100/60 and proceeded to install Vista x64. Installation went without hitch although I still need to get x64 drivers for the OLED display. I'm pretty busy ATM but I can't wait to game test with C&C3 when I have the time.

technically it was an open box item so I think the best I can expect from newegg is that it is not garaunteed to come with any accessories and that it can be refunded but not exchanged.

You have the G1 Driver/Utilities CD, put that into your laptop, and then select VGA, that is the one you need to install. This is the default Asus driver that comes with the G1. Then you can update it as you like. -
Anyone get ATItool to work on vista 32bit? I ran as admin and still cant push out more than my norm which is about 3900 using 3dmark05. I would be interested on what other people got for normal settings running XP compared to Vista.
-
Use atitool 0.27, works for me in vista 32 bit. Lower 3Dmark score after overclocking is caused by crappy drivers
-
I love my G1, but there are a few changes I would have made. The built-in speakers are pathetic. And the glossy finish, although gorgeous when you first unwrap it, scratches very easily and shows finger prints easily. The keyboard could be a little quieter as well. Oh and I wish they didn't preload Norton AntiVirus, Norton products are a plauge that's difficult to cure your system of.
-
I got my G1 from NewEgg. It was not an open box. Had Vista Home Premium loaded. And there was no bloatware other than Norton AntiVirus.
-
Okay I'm having another small issue with my G1. My video and sound seems to be going "bad". Reason I say bad is because earlier today everything was fine, but when I plug everything in for the night my video and sound in World of Warcraft and Simcity 4 are not what they were. I reinstalled my video and sound drivers from the Asus driver disc that came with the laptop, but that didn't fix the issue. Also I could not find a driver for the go7700 for vista off the Nvidia site as well. I contacted the support site for WoW addressing the sound, but nothing worked..I wonder whats up?
-
go to laptopvideo2go.com
read the instructions remember to use the modded inf file. -
I hate to sound stupid but which one is for me? I read all the FAQ's on how to detirmine which driver is for me, but I went through a bunch and could not find one that supported the go7700. Am I making this way too hard?
Also where would I find an updated sound driver as well? The Blizzard quick fix for my sound issue didnt work, and i ran a dxdiag to see what my card type was but I couldn't decipher a name. If anyone has info. on this as well that would be great.
*Update* I figured out my sound issue (for now) and I found a driver that worked with my OS and vid. card but I don't think it fixxed my issue. My FPS average in World of Warcraft is now 27-28 FPS while in a city, with graphics maxxed and at 1600x1024 (Wide) from its former 45-50 FPS average at the same settings, any ideas anyone? -
Hey when I open a pictures folder on my G1 it takes a long time to show the thumbnails and I have to hit the "refresh" button for them to show correctly. Anyone know what's up and how to fix this?
Thanks -
So now I'm thinking of replacing my W3j with something - dang this site.
I haven't brushed up much on this vs. the W3j, but please advise on the screen technology vs. the W3j... -
-
Im now running with Xp64 on my G1 and Im having some serious issues with getting my sound to work. I cannot uninstall the driver; it gives me an error about it being required to start the system. I cannot update the driver it clicks and nothing happens. I can disable the driver and re-enable it which requires a restart. Safe mode seems to net the same results. Currently the driver is not one of the realtek ones and it says the device is not functioning properly.
Ive tried running the latest realtek installers for Vista64/32 and xp32, they both give the same errors.
Has this happened with anyone else? -
Hooray I am now worthy to enter the halls of the Asus G1 Owners Thread!
Got it from bestbuy after rebate dropped it to $1649. Had it 2 days now and LOVING it!
I had drooled over it for months on here and finally had the money.
Only gripes is the particular model i got has only has 1 yr warranty (luckily AMEX should cover another year onto that so not too bad) Second the USB ports all being in the back, nice to have 4 ports but I plug/unplug alot so reaching back there can be frustrating.
Dumped Vista after less than stellar performance, format and reloaded to XP Pro been solid ever since -
Just received my Asus G1, running good looking good.
I thought the bag looked a bit too flashy but it wasn't that bad at all, I rather am taking a liking to it. Question though, anyone with the bag put books in front of the notebook slot or behind it?
Vista has been running good also, no plans on changing it what isn't broke doesn't need fixing. But if I had xp I would probably replace vista with it in the long run.
Newb question, how would you know you need to dl drivers? -
But to do justice to your nickname you should try Windows XP on the G1 instead. Gaming under Vista and G1 is not really great yet since nVidia have not released updated drivers for the GeForce Go 7700 so games run a lot slower under Vista. Windows XP and the NVIDIA MobileForce M4 Enhanced Drivers perform really well.
I think the bag it's great, however I don't carry much except the G1, power supply, USB External HDD and my Plantronics Bluetooth Stereo Headset to keep the weight to the minimum. I think the front pack will be the best place to carry your books.
It's always a good idea to keep the drivers up-to-date if you want, specially the video drivers, but that's basically up to you to decide.
Happy gaming, er... studying hehehehe... -

I agree RayanMX, you should use XP for gaming, but why not just dual boot Vista and XP, use XP for gaming and keep Vista for fun and regular use, since you "may" like the GUI.
Do keep up with the graphic drivers, you may also want to keep an eye on the bios updates, located on the Asus website.
Remove any unwanted software, programs, applications to help speed up your notebook, or possibly look to clean install of whatever windows you want to use.
Enjoy your new laptop. -
Note to all: There's a dual boot guide here in the forums for those who don't know how to do it.
Cheers!
RayanMX -
Dual booting XP, would that not slow the computer down at all? I guess the concept of dual booting is new to me, could anyone clear it up
Because I might consider that, if the gaming performance is better with XP, like the past posts have said. Seems like a good idea if its simple and easy -

If I owned a G1 and know I was going to game on it regularly, I wouldn't bother with Vista, I would just stick with XP Pro and do everything on it. Vista offers a nice new GUI and some features, but XP Pro is just more efficient.
Dual Booting XP and Vista is not hard, it will not slow the computer, however your boot time will be hampered. You can change the timing in which it allows you to select an OS to use, since the default i believe is 15 seconds and this will hurt your boot time.
As RayanMX stated this will take up some HDD space, that you may or may not want to use up, but the G1 does come with a 160GB HD
Partition it something like this, C:15GB XP Pro, D:25GB, E:Apps, Fownload/Storage, something like that so that gives about 100GB left to play around.

Question to g1 owners-
Sorry if this is repeat but 18 pages is hella lot to read.
1) The g1 comes with vista now. If I got my windows XPPro and put it on the laptop, will I be able to dload the windowsXP drivers to the laptop from some web page on asus?
2) Anybody tried swapping out the 2Ghz core duo with the 2.33? Will it just "drop in" or will there be mods that need to be done? Like you need a hacked Bios or something?
3) Anybody with dead or stuck pixels? I need to mail order this laptop and thats my main fear.
4) Does Asus use a hidden partition to do a restore? Or is everything on a cd?
5) How gamer ready is this laptop? I've read reviews where even this laptop has issues running Supreme Commander on the native screen resolution (but then again, alot of high end home system does too.)
What about other games like C&C3, Neverwinder Nights 2, Rise of Legends, LOTR:Rise of Middle earth2?
I wanted a "smaller" laptop to game with. Not something like a 17in laptop. And so far this is the only 15in with the best vid card I could find.
Btw, on a side note, the only thing I hated about dualbooting the XP/Vista is that system restore will need to be turned off in one version of the OS. I can see how this would mess up one os from the other. Why? When windows dualboots, it doesn't "hide" the other drive. So you can actually edit/save/delete things on teh vista drive while in XP and visa versa. -
Oh and I also liked the included matching backpack and mouse!
Cheers!
RayanMX -
Hi RayanMX,
i have a dead pixel on my G1 and you wrote that ASUS offers a 30 day pixel warranty?
Togeis -
Oh man, I cannot believe the issues I have at trying to order the laptop plus my other items from Newegg. 4 times was my order refused. 3 of those I contacted my CC company to allow it. Then newegg approves the order, but then gets deplayed a day. Then today my order is denied again due to a different shipping address. I have that address on file with my cc company. I tell newegg that. again its delayed. I'm paying for next day service, and I ordered this on Thursday. Its not going out till Monday (maybe per newegg,it may go out on Tuesday). So I may not get it till Weds! Thats 7 days for next day delivery. augh.
-
Oh btw, wheres a good place to order a spare battery for the g1? Someplace that wont charge a arm and a leg for shipping too?
-
I've had my G1 about a month, and so far it's been great. Only exception to that was that it came with Vista, and now that's gone, replaced with XP Pro x64. This may have been a bad move on my part, there are still a number of drivers I can't find to work with x64 XP Pro. If I can't get drivers working, I've just blown $87, oh well. Then I'll have to fork over $144 for a copy of XP Pro standard 32 bit, drivers no problem for that. I thought x64 version would be fine, latest version, boy was I WRONG!
Can anyone post a list of drivers for XP Pro x64 for the G1? It's making me crazy!
Here's what's happening ....
On bootup, once the desktop comes up, I get 3 popup error windows:
ASUS Multiframe - Multiframe can only be run on ASUS Laptops! Please check whether ASUS ATK Driver is installed
D3dcheck - ASUS ATK ACPI Driver not found!
ERROR - Can't open ACPI ATK0100 kernel Mode Driver
I am able to close those out and go on.
In Device Manager, these items have problems:
IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers/Base System Device (yellow !)
Imaging devices/USB 2.0 Image Capture Controller (yellow !)
Other devices/Modem Device on High Definition Audio Bus (yellow ?)
/Unknown device (yellow ?)
/USB device (yellow ?)
Finally, whenever I try to drag a window by the top blue bar, or move other items around, the display response is VERY sluggish. It redraws about 4 frames per second. Graphics/display driver????
Other than these issues, the G1 is terrific. Overall response is superb, once I get these drivers it will be perfect. Display is gorgeous, although I really don't like the widescreen aspect ratio, graphics and images are slightly squeezed vertically, making photo and video editing difficult. You have to mentally adjust for this distortion. Is there a utility to force the display to view in 4:3 aspect ratio? Widescreen is nice, but only when watching a widescreen DVD -
Had mine for about a week now, no major gripes.
Plays just about all games on high, except for flight sim x.
Vista Ultimate is a bit of a waste tho, they should have just used home premium, and knocked a few bucks off the price.
They also should have put at least one of the USB ports on the side, its a bit annoying to stick your memory stick in the back all the time.
Love the mouse and backpack tho.
Overall an awesome "work" cough.........cough...... laptop, gotta love the government, they'll pay for anything. -
-
Um it does come with Vista Home Premium. At least thats what newegg says should come with mine.
Double checked. Best Buy and Zipzoomfly also come with Vista home premium. Where did you get yours? I wouldnt mind getting Ultimate.
-
I got my G1 today! Pretty sad waiting all day for it. UPS loads it on truck at 5:30am. Truck leae at 8:05am. But I don't get it till 3:45pm.
Everything seems to be ok. I wish the screen was a bit brighter. My Sony SZ160p was brighter, but then again, it was one of the first notebooks to use LED as backlighting. And I wish there was a way to edit the OLED display more.
I'm gonna wipe the harddrive when I get home.
I have a couple of question. I hope someone reads this b4 I format.
1) The two CDs in the box is all I need to do a restore, right? Nothing to back up?
2) Asus saw it fit to create multi partitions. One for Vista, and one as storage. All ok to redo all the partitions, right? -
the two cd's will enable you to restore it to factory default. if you want to keep anything else, you will need to back it up.
for the second question, i'm not 100% sure, but i would say that you would be able to redo the partitions. that is assuming you removing the partitions -
hmmmm, i just got a restore DVD, and nero CD with mine, had to do a restore to begin with as it hadn't completed the Vista install properly. so blew the whole thing away, and started from fresh with the restore disk.
the DVD got me a base vista home premuim edition installation that had been activated. i then had to install the missing drivers myself, downloaded from the asus website. (and Asus, please upgrade your connection to a broadband hookup. hosting a website over dial-up doesn't cut it anymore.)
suffice to say, this took me a little while.. -
3dmark06=2456 using stock video drivers. Much better from the 791 I got with the SZ160p. But to be fair, that SZ160p feels better built than this G1. And its smaller.

2) Yes Asus shipps their notebooks with their own idea of partitions, you are able to re-partition them anyway you want. One for Vista and one for Storage sounds good.
I personaly have my hard drive partitioned into 3, C: = Windows, D: = Applications, F: = Storage/Movies/Music (since movies and music are just files laying around they just need to be in 1 spot for ease of accessing)
Your 3DMark06 value is quite good. -
I just got my Asus G1 and I am enjoying it to the max. Does anyone know to remove the bloatware and junk I do not need for Vista? I tried comparing it to the MCE but it is completely differnt. Also, can I reinstall window xp pro and use the recovery disk to switch back to vista if i need to in the future? I really don't like Vista, but it might be usefull one day. Thanks!
-
Go read the last 10 posts. you see you can. Or you can read my post "Got my G1- Need answers ASAP!" and you'll see I got it to work..although the windows media edition I seem to be having issues..
-
Just got my G1 today. I've been partitioning my HD, and found a ~4GB partition called "Inactive OS/2 Boot Man".
What is this? -
MilestonePC.com Company Representative
The next thing you may want to do, is remove Norton, and instead use AVG Free, this is because Norton is a resource hog, drawing upon too much, causing your notebook to be slowed.
There are other software you may want to keep or remove, Splendid, Multiframe, Net4Switch and more, this is all up to you.
Yes you are able to do a clean install of MCE, and then switch back to Vista when you want to, you can even dual boot if you want. Make sure you have all the drivers when you make the switch to XP. -

What happens if I erase this recovery partition?
I'm partitioning my HD so I can install XP and Ubuntu, and something is preventing it...
BTW how does the recovery Disc work, will it wipe out new partitions and restore the factory partitions and Vista? -
Where is the best place to buy this from in Canada??
-
He has a good rep around here and you can check http://www.resellerratings.com/store/MilestonePC
He has plenty of good rep there to.
He is also very knowledgeable, has helped me many times with my G1 questions
My next ASUS is definetly going to be from him -
If you want to dual boot and partition it for 2 os's then i recommend deleting partitions 2, 3, and 4. Then splitting the remaining amount in half to give 2 bootable partitions plus the recovery one for microsoft. -
So even if you wipe out the recovery partition and install XP it will still work, right?
