We have a showroom location in Canada, Markham, Ontario, if you want to come visit, that's no problem. Call ahead or email us regarding what laptops you wish to view so we can be prepared with them out for you.

Has anyone else had this problem?

I've owned my ASUS G1 laptop since January (Win MCE 2005). Just about 2 weeks ago, my LCD Display intermittantly turns to garbage/distortion which seems to go away when I adjust the tilt position of the screen. It will happen when I'm booting up. Since the first day I got it, the windows background will about 20 bright pixels in about 3 or 4 different rows only a few mm's apart (this is only noticable when the brightness is turned 3/4 to max). This started out only on the background display, but now I've noticed it when I'm viewing picture files also. Keep in mind that this problem goes and comes and is not a steady problem. I've reloaded the operating system twice with no success of eliminating the problem with the bright pixels. When I'm playing a game or watching a dvd or video the dots go away, it seems to only happen on a still screen. I'm regretfully considering shipping it out for repair unless someone knows anything else to try. I did make sure that the video cables were firmly attached to the motherboard (figured maybe a loose cable).

if you wipe out the partition and then reinstall xp, the os will automatically put the recovery partition back.

Really? Mine isnt all that noisy. You could use speedfan, although I'm still trying to get used to it.
Man, this unit gets hot. the cpu temp is always around 50c and gaming will send to over 75c and my gpu is in the 80's. I'm amazed the unit doesnt shut down. :)

I have that on the computer now. Normal idle @1Ghz my temp is aorund 46c. In a warm room, that would be in the 50'sc.

I actually had NHC tell me my harddrive temp was too hot. it went abov 56c. Anybody elses harddrive gets that hot?

the recovery disk included, does it recover bloatware as well?

also how does it do with Office? is it nice to type with?
I am planning on using Mcafee, does anyone advise against that?

The recovery disk will "recover" the bloatware as well....
It does just fine with office...
Typing is just fine with the G1. I'm easily typing this message at 40-50wpm while laying in bed lol...
    Don't get Mcafee...get Avast.

If you only install the Windows Recovery [the 2CDs or the DVD] and refuse to give the Driver CD when it wants to.You will have a fresh windows installation.Without any drivers.

Well you really can't compare them exactly, the G1S is on a new chipset. If you want something with the latest technology in it, then the choice is obvious, go for the G1S despite the price increase which does justify itself.

However if the price does bring you outside of your budget you will be happy with the G1P aswell. Many owners here are happy with the G1P, it is a great notebook, awesome performance and etc.

So that's how I would look at it, not just price, but also the technology and specs need to be considered.

Also, I could be wrong, but if you want it for games, teh g1 would be better as you can still put winxp on it. With the new chipset for the g1s, there might not be any windowxp drivers unless asus releases the notebook with xp, which I doubt as the new 8000 vid cards use directx10.

no.no. well, I don't know if it will. BUT what I am saying is all the new equiptment in the new laptop will have vista drivers. If you wanted to install winxp to play games on, you may be out of luck.

Hello everybody. I'm running XP on my g1. I downloaded that modified Hcontrol.exe file that modifies the hotkeys down below the keyboard and right above it, but, I had some issues.
Is there a way to make the 'email' hotkey do something else, or, open my Gmail? I don't use Outlook Express.

Also, has anyone had any luck modding the little display that on default shows the time? I want to make it show %battery left on there, too, if possible. Basically, I want the thing to be usable as more than just cool looking window dressing.

Another thing, I play a lot of FPS games like Enemy Territory. Is the keyboard going to wear out on me? I'm thinking about buying a keyboard to use for gaming purposes so my laptop keypads don't get worn out. Anyone had issues with their keyboard? I love it, but I don't want it to wear out on me.

One final thing.. How in the heck do I use that dvd-player mode where it's basically turned off except the minimum to run a dvd? You know, the front row of media player buttons. I haven't gotten it to work. Anyone else have problems with it? Alternately, if no one else has problems, how do you use the thing?

But otherwise, besides those little gripes, the thing has been great. What a sweet machine.

The program is ATK1000 something like that , it should be in your driver Cd.

Guys.. I just stop by bestbuy and take a look at the G1. It's AWESOME!!! that thing sure looks hot The impression of the machine is great, it's far more than I expected. The frames of the screen makes the screen looks big and the high resolution is great. The color and brightness is absolutely accurate and evenly spread out on the screen I notice no light leakage at all. It's a nice machine I'd get it if i have the cash . It's a great 15.4". I felt like grab the machine from Bestbuy and run away.

Another thing that confuse me is that their version of G1 does not have a bluetooth? (bestbuy)

Does the new version G1S comes with HDMI and E-SATA? That'll be cool.

If I want to install XP on a G1 that shipped with Vista, should I get the x-64 edition or am I stuck with normal 32 bit pro due to lack of drivers? And if I am stuck with pro, how much of a performance difference will this be relative to x-64? enough that i should just stick with vista?

You don't want xp x64. Vista x64 is usable, with a little tweaking. Xp x64 is not. It's got a lot of compability problems, more than vista x64 has over regular vista. and gives no performance increase. It's more a proof of concept OS than a fully fledged consumer one.

Ok first thing to answer. I ordered my G1 from bestbuys website and it indeed has bluetooth. Am 100% mine does because i'm on my bluetooth headset right now :)

Second, I got rid of Vista mainly because even after killing the bloatware I experienced frequent locks and crashes. Nothing against Vista but for me i'll wait till Service Pack 1 releases. Loaded XP Pro things are smooth, my games run considerably faster and I am very happy with it. I may consider dual booting Vista later so I can download patches from time to time see how it evolves.

Do you guys know if the actual G1 can be updated to the new G1 S for those who already own a G1. I mean by that chaging the 7700 to the new DX 10. I know it's based on a new chipset but still, is it possible ??

The answer is no, you can't upgrade a G1P to make its specs the same or similar to the G1s. Nor can you ugrade the graphics card to the 8600M.

One of the ways to acquire a G1s, it to sell your G1P for something like 300-500$ less than your original price, and then pay the difference and get yourself a G1s.

Hey Guys, I recently purchased a G1 and have had a few problems sorting out drivers in XP (running vista and XP in dual boot). Although I beleive I've downloaded and installed all the neccesary drivers from the ASUS site (damn slow) and http://www.abxzone.com/g1/XP/ After 5 days of searching forums and googling I've not been able to find any proven guide to driver installing which shows the correct order of driver installation.

    Can anyone help?

Also, can anyone recommend a stable set of XP (Pro, SP2, 32 bit) and Vista (home premium 32 bit) video drivers - perhaps from http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/ http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/ ??

    Any help appreciated.

that seems to happen when a hard question gets asked. I can't help you there, i am quite happy with vista at the moment and feel that there is no reason to change. however, i know that there are quite a few G1 usersthat dual boot, so hopefully you'll get a reply :)

Hello everyone, I just reinstall windows and now have XP Pro SP2. The only driver I am missing is the Ethernet Controller. Does anyone know which driver this is? thanks! BTW I am loving XP so much more than Vista. Vista was too slow for my taste, I guess i will wait awhile before i go back to vista :)

Sorry to post this late, but I was onto some other things...

The thing is that my Asus G1 came with a 30 day "dead pixels" warranty... I purchased it at Discountlaptops.com (even though they don't have it in stock they ordered a couple of G1s for me and a friend).

    Best regards,

Mousepad problems? Has anyone had them? After six months of trouble-free happy gaming on the G1, my mousepad has quit working. Its really random: sometimes it won't work at all, sometimes it moves at half speed, sometimes it jumps all over the screen. I tried re-installing the drivers - it doesn't help. Has anyone else had any problems...or have any ideas how to fix it? Thanks.

    Oh yeah!

I run Ubuntu on my G1 when I want to browse the net. You know? there's simply no better solution for a virus/trojan free enviroment...

I installed it via WUBI, so it was a pain-free installation, no partitioning, no hassles.

Maybe the warranty has changed recently?

    Cheers!

I was wondering if the lights are suppose to always flash when you have them turned on in the ASUS Direct Console? I've owned mine now 3 days. I havent gamed with the computer yet so maybe it lights up more when it uses the direct X.
