I think that while the Asus logo is on you can press the TAB key and it will give you all of the keys that you can use to enter into bios, etc. I think the bios key was F2, so try that

I kinda disagree stamar... The first DirectX 10 game to come out is Halo2...

But if you consider that Microsoft Flight Simulator X recommends DirectX 10 for a complete experience, then in a way, FSX wasTHE first DX10 game to come out... ;)

    Cheers!

Ok what I have just learned since I am still a noob to the G1 still is that when you have it unplugged the "Powermizer" which is the thing you control with the top left button that changes from battery saving to performance is set the the lowest setting when unplugged so when you are mobile I was getting 13 frames in counterstrike and 19 frames in trackmania now that I moved the slide all the way to performance which probably comprimizes battery life (will know by how much tommorrow) Now I get easily 200 frames in source and 167 frames in trackmania which now sounds about where this bad boy should be performing with these old games. So hopefully someone with performance problems that doesnt know will see this post

I wanted to also ask....Can this laptop play HD dvd's?

That's right DustU, when gaming on battery, people forget that the GPU is heavily underclocked, thus resulting in low FPS, when they compared it to the laptop being plugged in.

So yes all you have to do it set hte GPU to maximum performance on battery, sure the heat, will go up, and battery life would be drained somewhat faster, but atleast you get those desired FPS needed.

Sorry but the G1 does not have a HD DVD or Blue ray reader/Optical Drive.

got my asus G1 last week and from what i can tell you, its a good buy. no disappointments besides the applications pre installed in it such as norton av, i dont know with u, but its really anoying to me. the hardware runs like dream. i render with sony vegas, 3dsmax, combustion, dvd ripper and i have no complain with the speed. wireless connectivity is also very good, it connects faster than the belkin USB adaptor for N1 and also has greater perimeter. im still trying to customize my msconfig to know which ones are not really important to automize. well this forum has been a big help to my decision in buying this laptop. i am satisfied

    Hi.
Can anybody tell if there is a way to control the OLED display above the keybord in Linux? Or maybe what to search for? It is probably not controlled by ACPI. Maybe other laptops have similar displays and a way to control them? What kind of device, and how is it visible in the system it is?

I have managed to control touchpad, mail, wlan and gaming LEDs. The only thing I am missing is this small display...

anyone else having trouble using the Asus Vista upgrade site?
    https://upgradeweb.moduslink.com/vista/Asustek

I get to the part where you put in your name, address, serial #, purchase date etc and hitting next just doesnt' work

nice to having a working website to order Vista as a discounted upgrade for recently purchased Asus notebooks.

unless its just not working until the 30th/31st when it comes out. i would think you could order it now though.

what are the first Asus notebooks to come with Vista 64bit pre installed?

    Vista Drivers

I noticed the 32/64 bit Vista drivers have been placed on the ASUS G1 download page.

These are the English/US drivers and I am not sure what might be available for another country/locality.

32/64 bit drivers are available for the following hardware: Audio, LAN, Modem, Touchpad, Video, Wireless, and Intel Robson. This is also the first time Intel Robson has been available for installation.

BIOS 208 is out that deals with a Vista issue as well.

I noticed that the DirectConsole software was not listed on the site anymore... (the program that illuminated the strobes and OLED)

If anyone has feedback on the drivers and how they differ from what they have been using it would be appreciated.

    Thanks!

    Hey,
Can one of you take the main large plastic thing off the bottom and take a picture?

REally looking for a picture of the board where the copper tube ends in a square

    next to the fan

Pretty important information to know if your gpu is compatible with others. I cant imagine why none of you have done it yet

Stamar, do the photos help you in the Xotic review?
    http://www.xoticpc.com/article_info.php/articles_id/25

Also, a person back on page 8 mentioned that the screen is 500 nits brightness. This is incorrect unless there is more than one screen. The reported screen is the same one as the Z96JS and the V1JP which is the CMO 1523 N15421. 200 nits brightness, and the contrast is 500:1.

Thanks. No actually there is a peice of plastic blocking the part i want to see.

I hope ice tea can tell whether the card is like the a8js or whether its a regular type 2 mxm card.

the g2 screen is called 500 nits brightness but I think that means dual lamp 250 each.

g1 screen is called 200 nits

I can say almost with 100% certainty that you will not be able to upgrade from a Dx9 to a DX10 card in the G1. This is why I am waiting to buy one. Wouldnt want to buy now and find out that they are coming out with centrino pro and a Dx10 card in a few months. The reason you prob wont be able to update to a DX10 card is that I think you need centrino pro and an intel 965 chipset(motherboard).

But any1 have any info on the 8400 and 8600 go?

I just got my G1 and I love it. It's a bit kitschy for my taste (all the glowy crap) but if I can figure out how to turn that stuff off and make some time to identify/remove the bloatware it will be that much better.

Anyway, I'm in love and now I have a new machine to baby. It's really a head turner even with the fingerprints and it's tendency to attract lint and I couldn't ask for better game performance plus I love the screen. It's such a wonderful change from my half-crap 1280x800 HP's screen.

If you want to turn off the flashing lights, there a program called Asus Direct Console, in there you will have 2 options, one is used to turn on or off the lights, and the other one controls the Direct Messenger, which shows who comes online on MSN, so it is easy to notice people when your gaming or looking down at the keyboard.

    Enjoy your new laptop.

I do have one question. My G1 came with a partition one drive is the normal Local Disk and another is Data... I really don't see any utility to keeping the partition but I have never actually partitioned or taken away a partition.

So, how the hell would I accomplish that and can I do so without wiping the computer because I'm entirely unwilling to go through that hassle at the moment...

I don't suppose anything is inherently wrong with it, I just don't need it. It's not like I'm going to scour the earth for ways to annihilate it and will probably just give up if I have to expend too much energy removing it...

Anyway, it would be educational if nothing else. I've never partitioned/removed a partition before and that makes me feel a little stupid because I consider myself fairly computer savvy.

Anyway, I realized why I couldn't turn off the lights the Direct Console utility wasn't installed on my computer so now it's installed and I'm light free except the eye on my touchpad.

I'm still in brain shock from this thing's power. I'd gotten so used to my old notebook that I forgot what it was like to have an up to date machine (or as up to date as is possible). Trying to learn all the new gadgets I've got in here is almost as much entertainment as actually being able to play BF 2142. I think I'm down to goofing with the TV Tuner if I can find a way to lower our cable box to a reasonable height (it's perched at the top of the entertainment system).

hehe tell me about it :) removing wotever bloatware and tweaking the beast with wotever service/registry is like 0wning an awp wh0r3 with a glock :D

well i haven't personally removed any partitions... i've only created partitions using the built in windows device manager, but i WAS going to and the nice people here told me that a 30-day free trial partition magic would do the trick just fine :)

I suspect it will take much longer than that (on the 15" monitor platform). The DX10 cards are huge. Not even the current 17" laptops offer the 8000 series, yet.

Well i know that it aint even in 17 inch laptops, but i suspect that by summer they will have the 8400 go in high-end 15's and the 8600 go in high end 17's.

ya the 8600 go is a 256 bit card. Its going to be something like the 7800 go of today in terms of its heat generated.

The numbering system of the next generation is not actually the same as this generation.

There is a good chance that the 8400 is actually the mid level card, what this generation is calling the 7600 and the x1600

The 8700, it might have a real freak of a notebook around it because its going to be using a lot of ac power.

Most of the pre-installed software are self explanitory, even the drivers used to make full use of the laptop are pretty much self explanitory.

Put in the driver/utility CD into optical drive and you will see a list of drivers and utlities that are in the laptop.

If you have any questions about a particular program and what it does, google it or ask here, there are many users here that will help out.

I agree; it's quite confusing as written. It's too bad the author isn't interested in clarifying what he meant.

The article quotes times for running Super PI; what options were used when running the program? Specifically, how many digits were calculated for the times given?

Hello all, 1st time poster here!!!
I have tried reading all 50 pages and did not find the following...

    1. does the g1 come with actual cds for sw install?

    2. is the windows a oem install cd or an image?

    3. I have now seen vista coming installed, anyone experience it yet (coming installed on your g1)?? And did vista come on oem cd?

    4. I have noticed that some resellers will modify the units (specifically changing the processor and Hdd) Is it really worth it to have a 2.33 ghz chip and a 7200 sata drive? at the risk of mfr warranty voidage?

    thanks in advance!!!

Not confusing a touch. I thought we settled on this 400 posts ago.

As for the Super PI results here is a sreenshot of my results. I hope that explains what you were looking for.

I'd like to know as well. It seems they took most of the Vista drivers off the site before I could download all of them yesterday. Could anyone upload these? I have the Vista 32 Direct Console if anyone needs it.

Certainly, you see that it's not very good for your readers to have to wade through a very long thread to learn what it was that you really meant in your article. The only thing that was settled 400 posts ago was your refusal to improve the piece.
