    sorry quite a few q's:
    1) can i convert to NTFS after i have things installed onto the drive?
    2) when i first tried the NTFS converter it only let me convert D drive (the data drive) into NTFS, is that normal? so C will always just be FAT32?
    3) i've already deleted the shortcut of the NTFS on the desktop, but am having a hard time locating the actual program. where is it actually located?
    4) wot's asusdvd? do i actually need it? (ie can i uncheck it on startup or even uninstall it?)
    5) what's the vitual drive for?
    6) what's the "realtek pcie nic driver" doing on my menu? can i uninstall it? i did a quick search on google and found that it has 'something' to do with the ethernet card, so does it mean that my internet wouldn't work if i've uninstalled it?

    thanks in advance!

i paid around US1732, i bought it in HK. though i had to really look as the shop i got it from was the only one with that price. all the other ones all had the same US1970 for some reason... and it's not that the shop i got it from was dodgy neither, they were really really helpful and they made sure they never touched the box until i arrived at the shop (i had to order it cuz they were outta stock)

Just wanted to say thanks to all for your reviews and input and what seems like a great laptop. I was debating for about a week on what laptop to purchase. I was stuck deciding between a Sager, Dell and Alienware and for awhile I was really stumped. Stumbled on this forum and was quite intrigued with the G1. Well needless to say mine just shipped yesterday from Newegg and hopefully by the time I get home from my "vacation" it will be waiting for me.

    Hi Guys,

What does the ASUS Splendid Utility do? When I launch the app nothing happens.

By the way, what are your core running temps while surfing web only?

    Thanks!

I had to use Asus DVD to play a movie that I had ripped to a DVD+RW because Media Player wouldn't play it. You might want to check and see if Media Player or Media Center will play the type of DVDs you have before you uninstall AsusDVD.

The virtual drive is so you can play games that require a CD in the drive without having the CD in the drive and not doing one of those forbidden No-CD things like I usually do on my desktop.

thanks for your answer boneyard. strange that it didn't let u play usimg WMP... does it have anything to do with the settings when u ripped the DVD? cuz wouldn't that then mean that u won't be able to watch the movie using any other stuff (perhaps not even pure dvd players?) unless u use an asus laptop?

LastDance regarding Splendid. Hit Fn + C which will cycle you through the different display modes. Basically what Splendid does is hold different gamma, saturation, color profiles for your display for different uses. I.e. when you are watching a DVD you may want to change to theatre mode. It's a matter of taste thought, try them out and see.

Your not using Asus Lifeframe? Well Lifeframe does have brightness controls and many others. The "Sun" like icon controls your brightness.

Another thing you may want to check out is that windows itself can use the webcam, but not adjust any settings. Double Click on My Computer, then double click on USB2.0 1.3m Webcam, this will turn on your webcam.

You may want to check this out:
    http://cowboyfrank.net/webcams/HowTo.htm

There are a variety of programs, but this site has a lot of information plus it striked me as being very usefull. :D

Oh ok, end program problem this is really dependant on the program.

For example if I have Winamp on, and then I try to shut down or restart, after all other applications close automatically, Winamp will not shutdown normally, but instead have a Prompt and Windows tries to End Task it, automatically which causes a long waiting period.

Basically what you need to do is find what program causes this, then remove it from start up. If it is a useless task.

This is not a hardware problem but instead a software problem. It will take some time to figure out what causes it to occur.

exactly the same here, but only for the first 2-3 times of shutdown before i tweaked it... it's not fully tweaked yet but i haven't had that issue ever since doing startup/bloatware/services.msc tweaks (though sorry can't offer anything more than that... in the sense that i dunno EXACTLY what i did to 'solve' the problem)

the one 'problem' that's concerning me at the moment is the amount of time it takes to defrag my C drive... the windows one used 5-6 hours while the auslogics took 3-4 hours... and the C drive is only around 40% used... is there anything i'm doing wrong (oh btw i haven't converted NTFS for neither drives)

Are you sure it's not a codec problem? I had the same thing happen to me, but not with dvds. I downloaded the xvid codec and WMP11 seems to be working fine with downloaded videos now.

There is a program called Asus Direct Console, one you find it, double click, there is a very easy interface in which you can simply turn on or off the lights.

So once you turn on the lights, play a game or do something that required the GPU like a 3DMark and you should see them flash.

Each laptop has their own F* key to go to the bios.

There are 2 ways you can figure this out.

    1) Put your laptop into hibernation, then take it out of hibernation, in the load screen it will state press F*...then go into windows and reboot and press that F* key when the Asus symbol shows up.

    2) Or you can constantly restart the laptop and press multiple F* keys until one of them work.

I believe it is F8 by the way.

1- What do you guys think about the release of the new ATI DX 10 cards (the new A8J for example) in comparison to your recent G1 purchase with a 7700.

Personally, i purchased the G1 two weeks ago, i'm really happy with its performance, however, i'm afraid that it is already almost obsolete, some people on the forum already argue that upcoming games in less than a year, will not be compatible with DX 9 card and won't be playable in a laptop like the G1. What are your opinions ?

2- Did you upgrade the 7700 drivers by the way ??

The new A8jr with the X2300 (supposedly has DX10 no one is for sure, limited information), but just for the sake of it lets assume it has DX10, the X2300 is still the lowest GPU. Maybe we can expect one and a half to double the performance from the X2300 when compared to the X1300. But the performance in my opinion when compared to the Go 7700, I believe the Go 7700 should have an advantage.

When Call of Duty 2 came out, my older computer could run it, but with DX8 graphics, there a option to turn on DX9. Generally speaking games that come in DX10 should be playable on DX9 cards. However if newer games state they will need shader model 4 or more, then our GPU's will be obsolete.

The noteboko market is moving very fast, consumers are usually left behind every 6 months.

Lets assume the worst case, DX10 games don't allow DX9 cards to play, well yes we are all stuck, but we are now seeing external GPUs as possible 3rd party solutions so keep and open mind for that.

Im not sure what the quote is about dx 10.
But the first dx 10 game is going to be crysis. You can play it with your hardware, but it will have some effect or run faster on dx 10 hardware.

So your 7700 is already obsolete in that there is a game that you cant run it to its highest level.
But you can still run the game .

Im interested in how its going to work. I bet a 7700 runs crysis a lot better than a ati x2300. But things suprise me all the time.

The first software that needs only dx 10 hardware to run, dont even worry about that for years. I mean, who can play such a game? Desktop owners with 8800 gtx? And preorders for the a8jr? Theres no market for such a game, all games will have to run on your hardware for years. You are the market the game manufacturers are trying to sell to. Theyre going to try to sell you dx 10 effects too mind you, the games are going to run better on the new gpus

Thats the level of difference you need to see.

However when the 8600 go and the x2600 come out Theyre going to run crysis faster than your 7700, and its also going to have extra effects.

You did buy a 7 series nvidia card near end of line so youre going to see the next gpu and its going to make yours look bad ( otherwise why would they bring it out?)

Like the person before who got a 6600 before the 7600 came out. The 7600 is a lot faster and its dx 9.0 compatible. Its probably exactly the same difference.

I mean think about this. one year ago the w3v had a pentium m and a x600, how does that compare to my dual core 64 bit cpu and 512 mb 7700 go?
This obsoletion step is nothing in comparison. I think you got a machine with a very long lifespan as far as its hardware.

I hate all the extra software that is installed. It truly is 'bloatware'. I experienced the same thing this reviewer encountered :

    http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=3454
I suggest you 'cleanup' what's not needed. I think you'll see better performance.

Well thanks for the answers...I've chosen to buy the G1 right now because i've been waiting for a very long time (more than 1 year) to upgrade my laptop. Before buying it, i heard that I need to wait until june to find a comparable 15.4 inches like the G1, with such a price and performance and compatible with DX 10. So i decided to make the move, and rather enjoy my time right now, instead of waiting again and again. I think that I would jump to an xbox 360 in a year or so if my laptop is too obsolete to run new games before having the money to buy a new one.
