What's the difference anyway? Looked on the asus website, but it only goes to G1S series. Looked at the specs on the best buy site and I have reason to believe that the monkeys got them wrong. So anyone with first hand experiance or other sources know about the differences?

They should be the same, but the BB version only has 1 year warranty from ASUS instead of 2, and the BB version does NOT include the bonus accessories, mainly the Targus Backpack and the Logitech Mouse.
-
The BB one is cheaper b/c it is running a slower processor. Sorry for the short answer-I am typing this on my PSP
-
Slower as in T7300 or T7100?
edit: NVm its the 2.0 T7300... -
-
X1 and A1 differ in screen resolution as well.
-
Well, the reason I'm looking at the BB version is that I can get them to open the box so I can look for dead pixels first and make sure there are no damages. Plus there is the no shipping hassle (2 stores have it near me), so I can get my hands on them instantly.
The .2 GHz won't make that much of a difference, will they? -
ASUS has a 30 day pixel guarantee, so that isn't much of a factor in my opinion.
The BB version doesn't mention HDMI, eSATA or DVI but I assume its included. -
and i betcha....ill betcha the 1 yr warranty will be exclusively repaired at BB's facilities only!
-
-
Now that you mention it, is there a way to extend your warranty from asus?
-
-
And the BB one isn't a whole lot cheaper, if at all, after you include tax and the like. For me (in Washington) it comes out to exactly $8.49 cheaper than newegg, and newegg doesn't have the cheapest price. Gentech has it at $1805, making the BB one $85 more expensive with less stuff included and a slower processor, plus less warranty. Ouch. -
but u dont quite understand where im going.
The 1 year warranty wont be serviced by asus. Asustek will only foot the bill and will remburse BB-service for any repairs but the repair work will be done by BB's own facilities. -
The benefit of buying it from best buy let me inspect the unit before I took it home and most importantly let me take one home immediately.
-
That price from gentech has me eyeing the G1s now. I had been thinking about the HP 8510p, but it's still not out yet. The new Dell Inspirons are having some issues, and I'm assuming they'll carry over to the Vostro as well. And there seems to be a big wait for the compal/sager 2090 twins (wsxga) and even though it's a good value, it is lacking some features.
I didn't like the look of the G1 at first, but it's growing on me. If I do get it, I'll be buying online. $1805 is the best price i've seen yet. -
ZT in all honesty I thought the G1S was incredibly gaudy and just overdone until I actually got it in my hands. Its a seriously attractive machine IRL and just screams quality.
-
I wanted to buy the Asus G1S notebook . As far as i know the OS is placed in a seperate partition in the Hard disk and not with a seperate OS disc .
Is this true? .
I wanted to upgrade the hard disk by placing Seagate Momentus 7200.2 160GB hard disk instead of the existing 5400rpm hard disk . If i upgrade then the Original OS would be of no use if it is in a separate partition in the hard disk .
People who bought this laptop pls help -
Haha, I'm exactly the opposite. I didn't mind the G1 look too much until I actually got my hands on one (a display model at BB) and its hideous. Very high quality, most definitely, with solid construction and such, but fugly is still fugly. The bezel at the top of the lid is about 4 times as thick as it should be, the weird logo thing in the middle of the mouse buttons is extremely distracting, and overall the styling is just not to my taste. The green 'WASD' keys are weird (but cool in their own way), and I like the green lights, but still. I guess I could get used to it, but I definitely much prefer the clean styling of the nearly identically priced and specced V1s.
-
I went to BB to look at a G1S. Within 5 minutes, I had 3 sales people trying to push the laptop on me with their protection plans. One of them even said that Windows ME is the latest OS from Microsoft. I tried not to crack up, but just couldn't help it. So, I asked one of them to hold the laptop for me because I didn't want to carry expensive equipment around the store. 2 minutes later, my dad and I were driving home and I ordered the G1S online for a much better performace to $ ratio.
-
LoL, Yeah you are better off ordering online, better warrenty, higher Cpu Speed, Come with the bag and mouse.
Out of curiousity which site did you order it online from.
I went with my friend and he brought a laptop with a printer from best buy, they were pushing more stuff(Extended warranty and stuff)and he denied it. After that they did not help my friend bag it or bring it up once he paid for it. It was funny. -
also the BB version doesn't mention bluetooh, anyone knows if it has it or not?
-
bb does not have bluetooth. Someone correct me if I am wrong. By the way, I bought from xoticpc.com cause Justin was fast and very responsive to all the emails I sent him. I even called him up and he was patient and even suggested not to get Robson, thats $40 less he would have made. GREAT SERVICE!!!!!
-
I'm typing this on a G1S-X1 bought from best buy and it does indeed have bluetooth
-
My friend recently bought the version from BB. It basically has everyhing the one newegg has, except the warranty, bag, mouse, and processor. He spent 1750+300(3year warranty)+160tax = 2210$ i think thats a big rip off :O
Im friends with a notebook dealer, im gettin the newegg one with everything that one comes with for 1720$ final price -

I would choose www.gentechpc.com over either of those laptops. The Newegg model has a terrible monitor and the Best Buy model only has a 7300 processor.
I recommend this

The G1S-A1 is the same no matter what reseller you choose. It is the G1S-X1 that is different.

Meh. The G1 was DEVO at Best Buy the last time I checked. I don't know about the warranty length. I do know that we sell 4 year PSPs on Dyson Vacuums even though we honor the 5 year warranty they come with
There are things I like about Best Buy, though. For example, if I did buy the G1 there, it would only cost me $1600 -

I have the Best Buy version. The only difference is the processor and warranty. Everything else is the same.
-
I have a question about the memory, in bb (GS1-X1) they say that the you cant upgrade the memmery. And the memory is slower than the newegg version.
-
Memory should be identical (2GB DDR2 667) and the memory is definitely upgradeable in both versions.
-
I still think the online versions are a better deal because of the bag, mouse and higher CPU clock speed. I don't understand why the crippled this for BB. I would've bought it on the spot if it had the same specs. -
hi people, my first post around here. I'd like to clarify some questions because I'm about to order a G1S-X1 from Best Buy and bring it to my country. I won't ask about the Bluetooth capability because it was already answered.
1- Does the G1S-X1 include the same hdmi, DVI and S-Ata ports the G1S-A1 have?
2- Can its RAM memory be expanded to 4Gb like the A1? (bb informs that its RAM is nonnexpandable)
3- Does it come with a PC card or a Express Card slot?
Tks already for the answers. -
BestBuy now has the G2S for sale and a newer version of the G1S with the C2D 7500. The G2S is the same as the one being sold online and comes with the T7500, NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT W/256MB GDDR3 VRAM. However the new G1S-X1 has the T7500 with the NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GS? And their orignal G1S-X1 can still be bought which has the T7300 and the NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT W/256MB GDDR3 VRAM. Why can't they just make the computer the same as the one bought from Asus and other online stores! Its a good deal though priced at $150 off, $1,599.99 (both G1S models). Does anyone have any new information?

No, i saw the same thing. in the paper it said GS with 7500 but online it said 7300 with GT, so i dunno
-
The G1S-X1 at BB is indeed a T7500. It also has the Geforce go 8600m GT w/ 256mb GDDR3 VRAM. Not the GS as previously stated. It also includes HDMI inputs. The processor is 2.2ghz not 2.0ghz!! I dont know if they recently changed it since you guys posted but this is looking like an unbelievable deal on BB.com. Its only 1599!!!!!!!!! Also has the WSXGA screen!
-
-
The G1S I looked at Best Buy the other day had a 1.8ghz processor....I went into device manager trying to figure out what they skimped on....I made a monkey log me on
-
I looked at the display model G1s at my local Best Buy this evening. It definitely had a T7300 processor.

I'm glad I found this thread because I was so close to buying the G1S-X1, not even realizing that it wasn't the same model as the A1 (dumb, I know).
I had a couple of questions about the video chipsets in each of them.
Is the Video RAM in the G1S (both X1 and/or A1) dedicated? i saw it posted as "semi-shared" on one site. Was that right? How much does it effect performance?
Also, I noticed that the 8600M-GT on the G1S-A1 and the G2S have been posted on some sites as having TurboCache. Does the X1 (the BB one) have that too?
Does ne1 know of a supplier that sells the G1S with 512mb of Video RAM rather than just 256mb?
One last question, the RAM in the G1S-X1 (at Best Buy) is upgradable to 4gb even though BB lists otherwise, right?
Thanks! Sorry for all of the questions!

Okay. Here is my experience with bestbuy and their geeksquad service. All of this is from a forum that I belong to, so the grammar may not be that good since I just quickly typed it all up.

My Computer
So my sister told me that bestbuy called today about my computer (which has been there for 3 weeks getting repaired, so I thought they were calling to let me know it had been fixed). I call back, and the guy said the last note he had was from 3 WEEKS ago, and he told me it had just been sitting there in the shop, and he asked me if I want to send it out, which will take 3 week. 3 weeks ago, I told them that I WANTED it sent out to be repaired, and there it is, still at the ****ing shop.
What the **** Bestbuy. YOUR ****ING SHOP IS GETTING MORE AND MORE ****TY EVERY ****ING TIME I GO THERE.
I'm just pissed because if I say I want my computer shipped out. You should probably ship it out to get fixed, NOT leave it in the shop for 3 weeks, do NOTHING and then call me to ask me if I want it shipped out after it was sitting there for 3 weeks.

So I decided I would call up bestbuy today to check on my computer status. I asked him about the status, and he told me that the repair center could not fix it because my video card had already been repaired and they could not repair it again. Now, I sent in the computer because of a raid error and my front USB drives not working.
A woman was put on the phone and she told me that the video card caused the raid error. Someone enlighten me and tell my how a video card causes a raid error!?
If they are lying to me, I'm going to really start ****ing *****ing at them. 1st, they didn't send my computer out for 3 weeks because of misscomminucation, now they tell me that my video card is responsible for raid erros. Bestbuy used to be so good. the ****.WTF
Can someone tell me if a video card could cause a raid error?
Edit: I forgot to label this thread...
Edit2: Moved for you to a more fitting section of the forum. - Than.

Bestbuy called me last night, and told me my computer was finished. However, nothing was fixed because the GPU I had in there had a problem, and it wasn't covered under the warrenty because they thought that I replaced it myself. So heres how it went down.
I walk into the store today, and a new guy I've never seen before helps me. I'm thinking that I'm already off to a good start beacuse he is new so he probably won't be an ass like some of the other geeksquad employees. So he tells me that the diagnostic of the computer is that the GPU is not working, and is not covered under my warrenty. I ask him about the raid problem, and tell him that my GPU shouldn't cause the raid error. He brings my computer to a monitor, and plugs it in using a AGP card they have there. The computer boots up fine, so I ask what the problem was with my graphics card. He puts my graphics card back in, and there is no video when he boots it up. I told him that when I brought the computer in 9 weeks ago that my GPU worked fine. I also noticed a dent on my computer plastic. I said that they probably broke the GPU when they were moving it around, and he actually kind of agreed with me, beacuse there was nothing about my GPU not working in the previous services. He told me to hold on and that he was going to get a manager to work things out.
The manager comes over, and tells me that I can not have the GPU replaced beacuse it is outside of warrenty because it is aftermarket. I told him that when my 9800 broke, that they gave me the X1300PRO in its place, so it should be covered. After hearing that, he told me that he could replace the GPU with something in the store. I walked over to help the geeksquad agent. First, he picked up a 1650PRO 256mb radeon card that retailed for 200 dollars and asked if that was the one that I originally looked at. I may have been able to get away with it, but I respect people, so I pointed out a X1550 256mb card. I know a lot of you guys are going to say that I should have gotten the 1650PRO. However, if they found out that there was the X1550 and I didn't tell them, they may have gotten a little ticked.
So after an hour of sitting and talking with them, the guy told me he was going to install the X1550 in my computer, and fix the raid error by either installing new raid, or just splitting up the hard drives (I really don't care).

Alright. So at bestbuy today, the woman turned my computer on for me. I saw the screen working and everything, and it seemed fine. I get back home today to hook it up to my display and... IT DOESN'T ****ING WORK. I'm getting no lights from my USB mouse, and no video. I don't think the computer was handled improperly by me. I had it so it wouldn't shake at all in the car.
Has anyone run into the same problem?
Also. As soon as I plug the power into the computer, it automatically starts up. Ahh, can someone please try to help me?
Could it be the new mobo they put in it? I found it a little strange that the computer instantly booted up when I plugged the power in.
_______________________________________________________________
okay, so I did bestbuys job...
I took out the power from the motherboard and put it back in. My computer started, but then I got the 00000050 BSoD. I swapped the places of the ram (I was desperate) and it works now. Why am I doing bestbuys job ?
Out of this whole ordeal, I ended up with a new graphics card, (Radeon X1550 256mb), a new DVD drive (it can write DVD's now instead of just reading them), and a new motherboard (comes with a firewire port).
Oh and with the new graphics card I now have a extra copy of steam.
After 9 weeks of pain, I think it ended up alright. (**** still getting raid error... nevermind)
________________________________________________________________
Oh no... I just brought the computer back again for maybe the 5th time yesterday. When I went there in the morning, there was a HUGE lightning storm that hit a cable (looked sooo cool). So when I get there, they don't let anyone in, so I went to the mall. I ended up going back after the mall.
Can't bestbuy just fix my ****ing raid error
9 weeks + counting
_______________________________________________________________
So as most of you guys know, bestbuy has had my computer since April 20th or around there.
They dropped my computer, which broke the GPU, PSU, and the mobo. They have replaced so much ****. And the guy told me today that they didn't want to try to fix it anymore, so they are giving me a new desktop for free that is comparable to my older one. However, I can upgrade the new one and just pay the difference. The great thing about this is that my warrenty on my computer is done, so I can just get a warrenty on this new one. I can't wait, I should be getting a call in 2 weeks letting me know the specs for my new one.
__________________________________________________________
Just throught I'd give you guys some info on how my computer is going...
They still haven't called me about my replacement. I brought the ****ing computer in on April 20th and now its July 20th.
My sisters computer has been there for three weeks now, and they say it has a raid error like mine...
Bestbuy = ****ING *****ES. If anyone from LF works there at Geeksquad, I may have to hit you.

-- Ended up getting a brand new computer from the store...
Sisters Computer
So I brought my sisters computer into bestbuy on June 10th. It had a BSOD, and I knew it had to be a hardware problem, because nothing changed with the software. So bestbuy has it for a month, and they tell me its a software error, and nothing is wrong with the hardware. They tell me I have to get recovery CD's for the computer (15 bucks, no problem). So I bring them into the store before I went to LA in Aug. When I get back, I go to the store because I was there picking bioshock up, and the guy told me they forgot about it. So then on Aug 26th, I called again, and they said that it was actually a problem with the RAID hardware. Oh boy. So they are "working" on it. I call today and they still say they are working on it. Now my mom says she wants to talk to them. She tells the guy that her son (me) has known it was a hardware error from the begining, and the same thing happend on his computer so you should have talked with him about it more. So she says they have until tommrow to fix the computer, or were going to pick up a new computer from there tommrow.
It's hard for me to put my foot down since I'm only 16, but my mom is evil. Whatever works.
Bestbuy is just getting recked by us. Except for the fact that it takes 3 months for something to happen . Heh

So there you go. Why I don't use bestbuy warranties. I hate them, and will continue to hate them -
2) I think semi-shared (I believe its called Turbo cache on the 8600 cards) is on both the G1s-A1 and G1s-X1. Basically, in addition to the 256mb of ddr3 video ram that the G1 comes with, it can use an additional 256 (maybe more, not sure) of memory from your computer ram.
3) There isn't any 512 ddr3 8600 card. However, don't worry about it. From reviews I have seen on hardocp.com using the desktop 8600 gts, there is absolutely no difference between 256mb of video ram and 512mb of video ram when playing the games currently available. In short, don't even worry about it. 256mb of video ram and 256 from turbo cache is plenty. -
Here's the link to the current specs that BB gives for the G1S-X1 online:
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8397594&type=product&id=1179877029623
It reads T7500 (which is 2.2 GHz) and GeForce 8600M GT.
The price is $1,599.99 (excluding sales tax).
If they sell something different than this for the same price, it's false advertising at the very least. -
It says T7500 in the ad but it is a misprint. I called them and talked to them about it. Bought mine on Saturday morning before the sale ended. Woot!
-
How much was it on sale for last week?
----------------------------------------
And just for verification before I pick it up... althought it says on the Best Buy website that this laptop's RAM is not expandable past the 2gb that it comes with, it is upgradable to 4gb, right? (2 2gb DIMMS).
Thanks! -
I also bought the G1S-X1 for $1599+tax this saturday at BB. Definitely a typo on the header on BB's website, the specs below the header do say 2.0Ghz. They seriously need a bit more knowledgeable people working there...I had one guy tell me the T7500 wasn't available yet.
The laptop is upgradable to 4GB, but since there are only two slots available (1gbx2), you'd have to part ways with the installed RAM to put in the 2GBx2 modules in.
Asus G1S-X1 (Bestbuy) vs G1S-A1 (Newegg)?
