get this if i use the windows 7 oem from asus on my g60 best buy version and go to install my rocket fish external micro usb adapter i run the driver setup from rocketfish and it fails durning adapter validation.... if i reformat the hard drive and use the dvd disk to reinstall and when it wants the driver cd disk i tur off the pc and restart the pc and then when i am at the desktop i use the same driver and it installs. so it must be some driver issue with asus and the trusted platform modual (TPM) i think.... anyway to get the drivers to work if i use the hard drive restore with the drivers and all installed......

No. you can't. 8GB of ram would be 2x 4GB which would be 200$+

$200 is outrageous in this economy. a laptop that sold for $3000 a year or so ago should now only be new at best $700. I wont even purchase an xbox360 or ps3 until they are what i just paid for the orginal xbox $40. Todays stuff is way to expensive. Perhaps i can buy one off a crack head for $10....

200$ is not outrageous. the average user could -easily- get by with 3GB and some even 2GB. 8GB is at the enthusiast level, just like an expensive GPU if you want Enthusiast level performance, you will pay out the nose for it.

i dont consider 8gb the enthusiast level. I consider 8gb the minimum recommend level of ram for any windows product from xp to vista to windows 7. There are alot of programs that people load up... i have atleast about 20 programs in my taskbar on the right hand side that start up during startup ranging from asus stuff to aol to wimax to bluetooth..... to speed fan...

i even thought this laptop is over priced at best buy... it should be no more then $300 even on ebay or best buy.

You are thinking like a desktop guy, where a usual i7/x58 setup will have 6 banks, where most use only 6gb some people like to go with 12gb. The G60 as many laptops out there only have 2 banks, to increase the memory you will have to buy higher density modules, which as in desktops scale exponentially in price, kinda like thinking of having a desktop with 24gb.

While i don't doubt there are users that might need/use the extra memory, the average user that don't load their task manager with a lot of stuff will get by fine with 4gb, some say that memory that isn't used is wasted $$$. For me when i see any apps that are needing it, ill upgrade, for now, its fine with 4gb.

But if really feel the need of loading so many apps and that memory in your case do make a difference consider a laptop like the g72 that comes with 3 memory banks, from factory comes with 6gb.

ROFL....You my friend are living in a dream world where everything we want is at the price we want to pay and not the real world price. :p At $300 a company could never recoup it's money spent on R&D. For instance at my company we charge anywhere from $3500 to $12000 for a single PCI board. These boards are proprietary and really only costs us about $300 to build but we need to make up for all the money spent on developing, employee costs (me for one :D) and show a profit to our investors.

i'm sure you'll have no problem finding someone with a 6 cell that would want to trade. i know i would have... but i returned my g51vx because the g50vt had the 9 cell.

Regarding RAM, 4GB is COMPLETELY fine for 99% of people. I normally have a dozen or so programs open, and 5 threads of Folding @ Home, and I only use about half my RAM.

If I actually needed more I'd go to 8GB, but at the current price points, and considering I'm not actually using it...

And this system is a good deal at the price! $300 is Atom and intel graphics territory.

Sorry to necro this thread, but does anyone know what happened to the
G60Vx-RBBX09 ? It seems to have dissapeared from best buy's web site...

I thought the 09 would be on the market longer than then G60Vx-RBBX05 and thought I might purchase the 09 in a couple weeks. I'd really rather buy the G60j because of the i7 w/GTX 260m but have no idea where to purchase it or how much it costs.

So that brings me to my next question, does anyone know if ASUS will continue to produce a G60 w/GTS 260m with an i7 or iAnything ? I have recently sold my 17" p-7805u and want to downsize to a 16" Asus with gtx260m. I dont mind the G60Vx-RBBX05 so much, but I would like a better stock processor than the p7450.. thank you!

The x09 has been gone for a few days now.

I'd THINK those G60jx systems or whatever would replace these...but I'd think they'd already be in stock at Best Buy and they're not :-/

Also I hope the G60jx systems don't have that BSOD that affected the G51j (and hopefully not jx?) system. A little worrying since presumably the G60s are almost exactly the same thing as the G51s.

    Thanks for the reply Wolf.

Well on that note are people having any luck upgrading the CPUs on their G60Vx-RBBX05 to say a p8700? I'm thinking its the same chipset so it should easily be upgraded however I wonder how easy it is to get to the CPU itself?

I may go ahead and buy the 05s before they discontinue them as well. My only fear is that the newer versions of G60 end up with a GTS 360m and dont want to miss out on a gtx 260m .... on the other hand a newer G60 might be equipped with an ati 5870? :) ... if anyone has any insight on this or a link to refer me to that would be fantastic.... thank you!!

I really doubt the G61 or what ever the new version might be called will come with 5870, they might just refresh it like the ASUS G51JX-X3, replace the 1920x1080 for 1366x768 display, go down to an i3 and lower the warranty to 1 year, and you probably have a very close version to whatever might replace the G60 for $999.

I wouldn't worry about the GTS 360-it looks like real world it's about the same as the GTX 260 (at least considering Asus underclocked it a bit). I am worried about the stability on these new systems though. It sounds like the G51jx DOES have stability issues like the G51j did, and I'd assume that'll carry over to the new G60s or whatever they're called :(

Darn it, these Core 2 systems are looking better...which is disappointing. I'd hate to get that slow of a CPU though, and I'm not comfortable replacing a CPU on a laptop.
