It is a disappointment really. It looks like the 9500 will hold the same midrange position of the 8600GT as well. You'd think they would have increased performance with the next generation replacement, unless that's what the 9600 is supposed to be.

The 9600 will be an improvement over the 8600GT/9500. Too bad Asus couldn't have used the 9600 in the M51Sn instead of the 9500.

so the M51 series might not even be worth waiting for? ...seeing as the performance is pretty much on par with the 8600M GT, what are the technical differences? newer technology? does this even matter? 8600M GT is pretty much everywhere... seems me waiting for this Asus may not be worth my time.

die shrink => less heat, more batt life. Theoretically. In practice I doubt you will see much difference, ASUS is not so good at power management.

What a shame with the comparatively weak CPU. :(

Why does Asus show Penryn as an option for the M51Sn? Will there be an A2 and or an A3, and maybe one of them with Penryn?

Only one configuration for the new M51Sn given in Q2 forecast. Penryn (T8100/9300) will be used in M50Sv with BD or SuperMulti OD.

Well, after doing some research, it appears that the M50Sv is going to have 1440x900 res, which is too high for me. :(

Do know if this is the correct res?

That is correct, the M50sv will have 1440x900 resolution which shouldn't be that bad on a 15.4".

The asus m51sn in Australia has the t9300 penryn processor and the nvidia 9500m.
If people in Australia want to buy this laptop, buy it now at jb hifi and get 10% off. I saw it today at JB hifi Woden ACT (about $1700 AUD after 10% off).

Dont know how long it will last for.

Yea it doesn't make any sense. Maybe in March another one will hit that will be a lot better. Now I am wondering though if I should just wait for a G1 model to get a Penryn or get the M51Sn, assuming the specs will be more like those in Australia...

I have got few days to make my final purchase and this is getting hard for me. I was suppose to get the M51Sn on the 29th but after playing with the 15.4" inches, I think it would be better I go back to the 17" so I am thinking of taking the Asus G2S. The Gurus in the house, please help me decide. Is paying 440€ worth it for the bigger screen on the Asus G2S?? I am crossed  Taking into consideration, the CPU, CPU, RAM and disk + price

bjluv, you are posting related questions on various threads.. that makes it difficult for us to answer you because it gets confusing.

As to "shafted US by not including Penryn" I wouldn't worry too much about it... basically the only advantages of Penryn come from a smaller transistor size => in theory, less heat produced and more battery.

In practice however, from what I've seen in the early battery life numbers for these new Penryn ASUS notebooks, it's just as bad as the Santa Rosa. So no real-life advantage whatsoever in the batt life direction. Maybe the heat will be slightly less but who knows... ASUS isn't good with power management.

Had they included a Penryn CPU, the minimum performance level would have been acceptable, but instead they chose to put in a low end last generation CPU, which is not. Had they at least used a 7500, it would have been more forgivable, but with this low end CPU they went with, it's really pathetic, and a real disappointment to everyone who was interested in this notebook. It's a real slap in the face to the US consumer, considering that other countries got better. There's just no excuse for this.

People should keep in mind that Asus HQ in Taiwan doesn't decide what specs to put into the machines that are imported into the US market -- Asus NA in Fremont makes those calls and places the production order with Taiwan.

It is indeed strange that they bumped the CPU down to the 5xxx series from the 75xx in the -sr model, but the accompanying price drop suggests that they might be trying to open the pricing lineup to place something else in there in the future; Asus doesn't like overlapping models competing in the same market price segment. It also suggests that Asus is trying to place the M51 as a mainstream to budget unit to compete with the middle-end Dell/HP machines in the US; the NA consumer, as a general rule, cares about price above all else (hence why WalMart does so well) and doesn't worry about differences in spec very much - that doesn't apply to the majority of users around here obviously, but Asus is still trying to gain a foothold in the US consumer notebook market and pricing is one way to raise their public profile (along with starting to sell the watered down G1 series @ BB).

As for the Asus NA decision itself, it wouldn't be the first time they made a seemingly unfathomable decision about unit specs - at one point they imported a W2 update with a 17" WXGA screen, of all things, in a flagship multimedia notebook. I'm betting on the former scenario myself for market segment stratification, but will have to see how things play out as Asus brings the entire M5x/7x series to market later this year and what current models go EOL by 2Q 08.

Can someone comment on these :

    1) Hows the build quality? Does it look cheap ?
I heard Dell uses not-so-good-quality-parts in their valueline laptops ....
Any issues like that in this particular model ?

    2) How's the ASUS line of notebooks? Is it pretty reliable ?
How'd you rate the reliability factor among peers like HP, Toshiba, Dell, Lenovo etc.?

    3) What's the warranty period on this ?

    4) And lastly, the 9500GS beats the 8600GS ??
IS this equivalent to the 8600 M GT? Any reviews on this particular card?

    5) And is 1toppc.com a reliable place to buy online from? I'd want it delivered to NY..

    Thanks for the patience!

    Don't be too happy yet.

Since it is outside the FTA, you will pay both your taxes when you receive your item, and USP charges about $60 to reclaim the taxes. You may try to do an arragement to get it shipped with USPS if you can because Canada Post only reclaim $5

Comparing 3DMark06 scores from lozanogo 8600M GT (DDR2) with GenTechPC 9500M GT it's quite intresting; the 8600M GT at stock settings (475/400) with a better CPU (C2D 2.0GHz) scored 3543 in 3DMark06 while the 9500M GS at stock settings (475/400) with a slower CPU (C2D 1.66GHz) scored 3693 in 3DMark06. I think that's pretty good that the 9500M GS managed to score 150 points more than the 8600M GT while both were clocked at the same settings and one having a slower processor. So it's either the driver differences that's giving the 9500M GS an upper hand or it's actually a little better than the 8600M GT. Then again I wouldn't know much about 3DMark score and 150 higher might not be that significant.
