It would be a HUGE down grade if the display was not IPS.

Good news for all you people that want an IPS screen
http://www.asus.com/Search/?SearchKey=N551Shunsai likes this. -
And even better, MATTE! This is great news. Not sure why they cheaped out on the GL551, but it was originally announced as the G551 with an IPS screen - so who really knows what the hell ASUS is doing. Either that or they just have insanely confusing model numbers that are all very similar...
-
Thanks for that link.
Looks good. I'm a bit surprised though it doesn't say anything about being touchscreen. I love having a touchscreen on my N550JK. -
I think that they traded performance and screen quality between the two models. Being for gamers, the G got a better GPU but with a display of lesser quality. Being targeted as a multimedia laptop, the N got IPS and a less powerful GPU.
That's what makes sense to me, at least.
Edit: all of this assuming they intend to hit the $1100 mark with both models, of course.
Edit 2: it's only one model of the 551 that only has 850m, sorry. So it is basically the same laptop as the G, only the IPS thing still confuses me a little. -
I think they both have the gtx 860m so gpu is the same.
-
No mention of touch screen in the specs or the features, even through it was mentioned at Computex that they would be touch screen. Also no mention of the Intel realsense 3d camera they demoed. Asus sure knows how to confuse people.
-
Touchscreens require glossy displays which are terrible on a portable device... I'd rather they keep that on the 13" laptops/convertibles or leave it as an option. Not have the option for a non-reflective display kills me. I don't want to see myself, or the sun, I want to see the screen.
-
Not worth the trade off of crispness that glossy screens offer.
-
I do like the crispness, but honestly I the reflection bothers me much more than the graininess of a matte display. I can't enjoy the crispness when I can't see the damn screen at all half the time due to fluorescent lights at work, the sun, a lamp...
If I only ever used a laptop in a dark room, I would certainly go glossy. -
The n550jk display is not even that bad it uses a semi glossy display and doesn't even reflect light much.
-
From my observations the N551 will be better in all way from GL551 (maybe not from G551 if there will come out one). IPS screen + external subwoofer and ofcourse the same GTX860M. The only thing which is better for me in GL551 (or G551 if there will be one..) is overall design, in fact it's just diffrent colors. In N551 I don't really like cover finish, those palpable circles through center of ASUS name looks and feels pretty bad.
-
Wish I could see one in person, I'd be interested in a 'not too glossy' model for the crispness if it had an anti-glare coating that wasn't grainy.
-
-
I'm completely confused at this point. So many different models... I don't know which one has IPS or not, 850 or 860, 900 series or 800 series. I'm just waiting to see what pops up at Amazon in the next couple of months and then I'll buy it.
-
At this point I think the jk has the 850, jm has the 860 and they both have ips screens as options but I have never heard anything about the jq yet
-
As for the G series looks like ASUS was trying to offload some of their cheap TN panels because they released the GL551 series with them. Then they announced the G551 series with IPS...but apparently with a TN option as well? No clue what they're doing with these lines and it's getting old fast.
-
Yeah, I just wonder what they're doing out there.. but N551 got everything what G551 will have plus external subwoofer. The N551 will be my notebook I guess.
-
Got to say, after looking at some pictures of the new laptop on the Asus website, I have to agree with Franzerich (who posted back on page 3):
Here are the pictures for comparison (both from the optical drive side):
N550
N551
In comparison to the N550, the newer N551 just looks so much cheaper. The only real bonus I'm seeing in the new version is the graphics card, which (for me) doesn't justify a cheaper chassis. It almost seems like they made the N550's with a special level of build quality to get people hooked on the series, only to do a bait-and-switch with the next version.fabiodiazs and Helikido like this. -
To be honest you guys rolls out wrong conclusions. The N551 is not younger brother of N550, it's all way diffrent design. N551 is younger brother of N56 - they've got almost same chasis, the N551 got just new design, that's all.
-
There's a reason why it's called the n551 not the n561

...because Asus folks can't count?
No, the.. s/r53x and n551, g550, etc. Those shells have all been updated internally this year, apparently. They look pretty much the same as before, except the ones that lost the thick plastic bend at the bottom (the other thicker laptops have that "wave" design, and they all look exactly like the n56 shell otherwise.. go figure). But I have it on good authority that what I saw in my current asus laptop when it comes to motherboard design and how it's anchored to the shell, how the contacts are set up, and so on (and it's a piece of art. I don't have extremely many nice things to say about asus, but they really did it with that design. It's functional. It's beautiful), is the same across those new 2014 versions. Apparently the u3x shells aren't updated in the same way. But the gx500 and nx500 (or what it was) are at least. -
N551 is supposed to come out 10/3 and g551 is 10/26 in Slovakia hopefully here in the us too!!!
-
I found this Link its an asus store in the czech rep and says the release is in 10/3/2014. 2 days from now.
-
The specs on the global Asus site do no mention anything about touch screen options for the N551/N751. I've been waiting for months for this laptop and wanted to have the touch option. Grrr

Lol it still uses ddr3 vram. Glad I pulled the trigger and got the n550jk
-
That's only for the N551JK (which is equipped with a GTX 850M). The N551JM is listed as having either 2GB or 4GB of GDDR5 VRAM with its GTX860M.

You are very right. I live in China and just got back from laptop shopping at Asus and was trying to find more about this model but seems there are no reviews or information really anywhere. Please help me! Here's the information I have.
The n551jm seemed to have two models. Almost all the specs were the same between the two except one had a 2.5 quad core processor and 8gb ram for about $1350. The other had a 2.8 duel core and 4gb ram for $1130. They were both metallic silver with a light up keyboard and both had the gtx860. The guy also had an older version of the Rog series, the G55vw which had the same $1350 price... But it seemed like lower specs (but he said it's better...)
What do you think is the best choice?
Note I do love in China and I know laptops here are always more expensive due to shipping bs. -
Great review in YouTube:

Also, the same guy has a written, more dense overview with lots of pics!
Asus N551JK review - a revised 15 inch multimedia laptop -
I was considering the n551 for its superior specs. however, according to some youtube reviews it looks somewhat bulky and heavy, similar to those nasty gaming laptops.
so I think ill be going for the n550jk considering the performance should not be so far apart and still remains sleek and relatively compact. Just thinking out loud here. -
I'm with you, mostly. I've given it a lot of thought and the only way I would get a N551 is if:
1. It costs the same as the N550 ($1100) and packs the same specs *but* offers an 860m instead of 850m
2. It has the same specs as the N550, including 850m, but costs less (say, 900)
I'm aware option 2 is unlikely, but seeing as the N550 goes on Amazon constantly about $1060, it would have to be a significant difference since I like that model's body waaaay more. -
HI , i think N551 is better some points vs N550 like cooling system n body build , removable battery ,n it can be equiped with 9XX nvidia ships next month(s) when it come to the US . i think i ll buy it if the price was 1k$
-
i just wanna know if it has one fan or dual fans ?
cause i hear that G551 have one fan -
I wouldn't count on the 900 cards. Those are the 970 and 980, way above this price range. It may be a while before 950 and 960 are released. Certainly not this year.
-
yea maybe ..
-
Anyone knows the release date of N551 in USA ?
hope they have wifi ac and IPS panel (not like GL551 redentl y released here) -
some US websites start putiing N551 in preorder : ShopBLT.com: Asus I7-4710hq 16gb 1tb 15.6in Fhd Dvdrw Windows 8
but idont know whats this N551JQ , its not listed in ASUS GLOBAL WEBSITE.
n idont know if those specs listed in first link are true or not -
does keyboard has a flex or bounce during typing?
-
The guy is saying that keyboard is good, and video clearly showing flex and bouncing too bad,i was about to buy it,n551 just pop out 2 days ago in the local stores with gtx 860m ddr5 too bad asus!
-
in USA ??????
-
Idk im in eastern europe, price is 870euros next day shipping
-
I am in Eastern Europe too. Could you drop sellers url please?
-
Well this is ominous for North American sellers:
ShopBLT, NeutronCanada, and Neobits are starting to list an N551JQ, in absence of other varieties (from what I can tell), and Neobits even has specs listed:
Asus - N551JQ-DS71 - Asus NB N551JQ-DS71 15.6 Ci7-4710HQ 16G 1TB GT845M W8.1 6Cell Gray Silver RTL
nVidia 845M and no touch screen. If this is the case, then that's an immediate dealbreaker. However, I'm not surprised, since Asus clearly believes that there's a sweetspot price of $1050-$1100 for "multimedia" customers, and conforms specs to meet that price. If this involves cutting GPU and other features down, then so be it. Samsung did the same thing with the Ativ Book 8, where it had the 8870m everywhere but North America, and stuck an 8770m in there instead to keep the price as close to $1000 as they could.
PS: thank you @vigorito for posting the links about the n551jm. It's looking more and more like Asus cut the touch screen from the n551 line. The only thing we have is that the n550jk is touch screen, the promo material months ago suggested the n551 was touch screen, and the support PDF from June hinted at touch screen. But since then, all signs seem to suggest no touch screen for any variant. -
i contacted some website that posted those N551JQ n they r not sure of specs
they r for preorder there . however here its avaialble a N551JK : http://www.microcenter.com/product/438186/n551jk-mh71_156_laptop_computer_-_gray_aluminum -
That is so weird, 845m for $1100 does not make any sense at all. You could get the N550JK and get a MUCH better package. I bet they made a mistake with the description.
Seriously though, if this laptop costs the same as the N550JK for 850m, I'll get that one instead of this model. The N550JK looks ×1000000 better. The N551 would be a complete step back for me.
