I bet its mistake in specs, the asian guy in one of the first video of presenting the new asus laptops line clearly showing in the paper n551 specs and only 2 graphics card are presented gtx850 and gtx860
-
Here is a link to another model in the USA & it has a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 850M but has a 750GB 7200 hard drive

That's a welcomed change. Something I constantly criticized about the N550 was the hard drive. I'm willing to trade 250ish GB for a speedier performance. I think the 750GB is a better choice overall.
That being said, I'm curious about the price and availability. The list price seems to be $1100, but is selling for $1000. Will the JM model with 860m be available in the US? If so, for how much?
It seems strange because I've seen the JM with European prices and most of them translate to a $1100ish tag. Maybe the JM will cost $1200 in the US? Just speculating.
I'm tired of the lack of information, basically. -
Which is why I decided weeks ago to stop waiting for its release. Additionally, some reviews of it have helped cement my decision. Asus N551JK review - a revised 15 inch multimedia laptop
-
Yeah, I read/saw that same review. What are you going to get instead, though?
-
Sager NP8268....I wanted the N551 for specs and looks but I prefer the look of the N550 and was tired of waiting for a laptop announced nearly 5 months ago.
-
i think i ll wait for the N551JM
hope it ll be released next month
i liked more than the N550jk -
Just ordered this one,I think it's the best compromise between specs and looks,a technician there told me the display is much more better than the N550jk,will check out the performance of the 7200rpm,if not convinced will swap for SSD..
-
@ omarfaie007
I'm thinking about ordering that N551JK from microcenter myself, and replacing the hard drive with a 256GB SSD and using the 750GB in an enclosure as an external drive. As far as I know, there is a USB doggle that can be purchased on Amazon to increase the Wireless Lan to AC. That was one of the draw backs a reviewer stated, that the range wasn't as good as the N550 that has it but the N551doesn't. Post back when you purchase it on your views and impressions, especially how the viewing is on the laptops matt screen -
r u in US ? are u sure its an IPS PANEL ? can u post here back when u receive it
-
Would be awesome if you could inform us a little about the laptop when you get it
Specially the screen: I want to know if it's really IPS or not. Pretty interested about what your friend said, too. That gives me something to look for. -
Sure will do,you know reviews are not 100% correct and perfect, may be the review unit was different or not the final ready configuration..
I will make a detailed review when I receive it..fingers crossed! -
With pleasure my friend
-
I am not in US,but I am sure it's an IPS,I ordered it after a friend received it from microcenter and told it's an IPS and had wonderful colors and viewing angles..but I will post ASA I receive mine..
-
ASUS N551J display has the same model (156HL01-102) 15.6-inch PLS (Plane to Line Switching) panel of Samsung
-
Plz review the wifi performance when you get it, it's the only thing keeping me from buying it
-
@ chrisyoung
The Asus model number I was referring too, that has the 750GB with 7200RPM hard drive is: ASUS N551JK-MH71. Microcenter is selling it in the USA and that is what the specs show on their web site, the link is further back, on page 11. Sorry if there was some confusion. -
And report if there any keyboard flex, bouncing,if yes i will go then with g551 with the similiar specs
-
okey thank u man
jazaka laho khyran xD -
I just came back from the store, was playing with n551 and i must say i have no doubt anymore what affordable 15 inch laptop i will buy it,didnt like the g551 because black colour makes g551 very bad looking (dust, smudges etc), n551 is great, and keyboard is awasome no flex no bouncing nothing.
-
ok little confused now i just found out that gtx860m has two variants with 4gb and 2gb vram, according to this site
Nvidia GeForce GTX 860M 4GB compare Nvidia GeForce GTX 860M 2GB v2 GPU
4gb ddr5 are maxwell arhitecture and 2gb is kepler arhitecture how that is possible didnt know that g860m was made in two different arhitectures older one and newer one?
im planning to buy this model so which nvidia i will get maxwell?
Asus laptop N551JM-CN142D -
There are 860Ms with Kepler architecture, but they're not very common. I doubt that's the one they have here.
The 2GB model is not limited to Kepler. Of that, I'm sure. -
because all new g551 models are listed with gtx860 4gb ddr5 and all new n551 are listed with gtx860m 2gb ddr5? why? n551 and g551 have different gtx860m inside?
-
they could, yes, but I'm gonna say no here. Despite not having hard facts, I'm pretty sure all GPUs found in G551 and N551 variants are Maxwell (even on G550 and N550, which have both 850m). If you're more worried about the RAM, all I can say is that Asus lists the N551JM as having either 2GB or 4GB: https://www.asus.com/Notebooks_Ultrabooks/N551JM/specifications/
It definetely exists, but probably it's not available in your country with 4GB.
Once again, I don't have the facts, just an assumption with all the info I've known during the last few months. -
Okay, but according to the site mentioned before 2gb ddr5 860m is using kepler arhitecture right? And what is using kepler its not maxwell
-
Not necessarily! Check the site again: the 860M 2GB that you picked to compare is labeled "v2". There's a non-v2 too, that one is Maxwell.
So basically, what I get from that site is:
1. All 4GB 860Ms are Maxwell
2. The 2GB 860M has Kepler and Maxwell variants.
As I said, though, the Kepler ones are not very common, and I'm pretty sure all 551 laptops have Maxwell. -
Do you think 2gb vram is enought for modern games?
-
Yeah more than enough. There are more important factors such as ram type.
-
Ok then its mine
-
Yes it is. 4GB sure wouldn't hurt, but 2 is more than enough.
-
Any news guyz about the N551JM in USA ?
-
I've been checking daily... Not that I know of. Kinda losing my mind.
-
Does anybody tested the wifi signal? Is it really poor, as is mentioned in some reviews?
-
Yes, I had the same issue with the wifi that you can read here: Asus N551JK review - a revised 15 inch multimedia laptop
It was nearly unusable -
saame ,one asus support agent said to me that it ll be released at least by the end of the month
-
N551 pop up in almost every store in my city for about 2 weeks, now after 2 weeks sudenly dissapeared everywhere! And i cant even order from main reseller, its not available any more anywhere n551 (gtx 860m) wery strange that new model dissapeared so quick (its not an iphone)
)) maybe asus pull up all n551 because the manufacturing defect with wi fii
-
I am also searching for N551JM, but its like chasing an unicorn. Based on your links I presume you are from same country as I am (Serbia), so if you manage to find it somewhere please post on forum, I will do the same. Sometimes I wonder if shops in my country actually had it in a first place. N551JK-CN112D is available (i7, 4gb ram, gtx850m ddr3) for 890 euros, but for a small price difference I prefer better video card and more ram of N551JM-CN142D.
EDIT: Silly me I forgot to say hello to everyone on this great forum (since I just joined). I am searching for new nb since my old Dell Inspiron N5010 is now four years old and useless at gaming (thou still works great). I was considering between ASUS N551JM, Acer V15 BE and Lenovo Y50-70, and N551 has least cons.
EDIT2: I just received mail from only store in my country which had it listed as available (MMMobile Lapovo) and it confirmed my previous thoughts: "Potovani dobili smo info za traeni računar,biće isporučiv sredinom decembra 2014 god.jer ga niko nema na stanju." Basicaly they say that no shop still has it, and it want be available until mid of December (at least in Serbia). -
Nema ga brate nigde, nije vise dostupan kod uvozika,a samo je kostao 98700din u monitoru sa gtx860m ddr5 li verujem da je povucen mozda zbog defekta sa wi fi karticom
-
That's actually not a bad guess *but*, for the love of god, Asus, just inform us.
For me is either this or N550, I have no other real options. -
what asus inform us?
just got email from asus on fb page, they say serbian resellers didnt expect such amount of sale for n551 (gtx 860m ddr5) so they dont have it any more for now -
xotic-pc
listed this model : n551jq (gtx 845)
XOTIC PC | ASUS N551JQ-DS71 - Custom 15.6" ASUS Notebook
for eta 22 dec
lool -
What the...? I don't understand the purpose of that machine.
-
Here in eastern europe (serbia) n551 is sold out,ETA mid december too
-
they said that they cant get N551JM at this time
-
at least u had it before xD
-
I mean n551 version (gtx860m) is sold out, n551 (gtx850m) is still available
-
yeah i know , so n551jm have no wifi problem ? did u test a jk model if it really have the wifi issue ?
-
If only issue with n551 is wi fi reception then thats ok it very easy to swap the wi fi card and its cheap
-
Finally, found a listing on Amazon (US) for the JK model.
Amazon.com : ASUS N551JK-DH71-CA Multimedia Notebook (15.6-inch, i7-4710HQ, 12GB-DDR3, 1TB HDD, GTX850M-4G, BD-ROM, Windows 8.1, Gray) : Computers & Accessories
It's a third party seller, though, from Canada. Also, it's not a good deal at all. It has the GTX850M for $1362. As of this moment, the N550JK we all know is selling on Amazon for $999 with the same card.
Just thought someone would be interested! -
yeaah its just the CANADIAN model , the US one listed in microcenter is better for 999$
Asus N551
