Mine old laptop was also about 8 years old (compal ifl 90) It was faster because it had an SSD in it.
Now my N551 has and SSD and the boottime to the desktop is about 4 seconds. And another 4 seconds it has loaded everything.
If i click on inet/firefox its instance.

Did anyone tried to applicate better thermal paste or overclocking gpu with modded bios?
-
Well i have opened up my Asus N551JK. IT is quite possible to do without damage it.
When you have removed all the screws on the underside, and the HDD en DVD.
(under the DVD there are 2 screws) you start prying by the DVD bay with a hard flat item (i used a dull knife) to the front. When you have snapped the first fastener (quite hard to do) the the rest is a piece of cake.
The Wifi antenna is in the hinge, that the only plastic surface (and the underside ofcourse)
The antenna is really bad, i removed the antenna and hooked it up to an other laptop (and no plastic/metal obstructing it) and the wifi signal was still really bad.
Because i had the laptop open and i had some artic silver 5 laying around. I couldn't find any warranty sticker so i removed the heatsink, cleaned it and applied the new thermal grease.
It looks like it lowered the temperature about 5-6 Celsius degrees on full load, using Core Damage to full load the CPU. It when from about 86 Celsius degrees to 79-80 Celsius degrees, fan is finning at 2800 RPM before it was 3000 RPM. (both test with with 0.08 volt undervolting)
I also checked out the MSATA port en messured it up. An full size msata SSD is impossible to fit. It just hits the heatpipe (about 1mm), and 3 electrical parts are in the way.

I wonder if they could work as a system drive instead of cache. -
I also disassembled laptop, but N551JM version with 860m 2GB ddr5, I've used Gelid Solutions GC Extreme Thermal Compound temperatures are 5*C lower and with undervolting for 0,08V - 7-10*C. I'm looking for best xtu settings for i7-4710hq, anyone found best?
N551JM photo:
Silver stickers are glued to magnesium heatsink where memory bank are soldered, they're probably also warranty stickers. Additional copper part of heatsink is for probably for powe section it also has thermal paste on it. Thermal paste on gpu and cpu looked dried just after 1,5 month.Last edited: Feb 19, 2015 -
And how do you undervolt? -

Have you looked at the voltage slider in xtu?

Hello to all...
I just bought a N551JM. My issue is with the trackpad, which feels a bit "loose" and makes a clicking noise when tapping at the middle (not when clicking the buttons which would be normal). I found a guy which has the G551 sibling with the same exact sympthom at http://www.ultrabookreview.com/5574-asus-g551jm-review/ (search for Szymon comment).
So, can any N551 owner confirm if this is indeed normal?
Many thanks
UPDATE: I had the chance to compare it with another one and it was faulty. A replacement is on the way.Last edited: Feb 26, 2015 -

I want to replace dvd drive with ssd. But, I couldn't remove the back plastic cover. I removed all the screws, and was able to access battery, harddisk, ram. Somehow, I couldn't remove the back cover and access dvd drive. Can someone please let me know how to remove it?
I saw the following post by SuperKoe:

Hi Everyone
I would like to buy an asus n551 jm-cn201h,
do you know if this model has the floating panel (fixed with 2 screws) to upgrade the hdd to an ssd?
Or is it common for all the n551jm series?
thank you -

Yes the chassis design should be constant.

Hey guys, just wondering if anyone has changed out their WIFI module for something better? if so, with what did
you replace it, is their a whitelist in the BIOS and how many antennas does it originally have?
Sorry for all the questions, just waiting for n551jm to come today and gathering info incase im not satisfied with the WIFI. -

Anyone else is having a strange noise from external subwoofer while playing games ? Normally, while listening to music or watching movies subwoofer sounds ok, but when i play games such as nba 2k or WoW, a background noise comes from a subwooofer. Any ideas ?
-
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
It could be interference generated by the gpu or cpu. If you run the game off the igp does it still do it?
-
Yeah its the same whether i run with nvidia gpu or intel. Just ran San Andreas and weirdly no background noise from subwoofer

anyone using n551zu? been waiting for n551 to reach malaysia since last year. but the only model came this month is the amd variant...
oh btw is there any info on n551jx n551jw? -
About the N551JQ laptop:
The keyboard area at the right side is horrible, the worst I've ever seen.
The "Power" key is where it supposed to be the "Home" in other systems, so expect to accidentally shut down the laptop before getting used to it.
There's not a dedicated key for "End" (it shares the samme key as "1". So either you have "num lock" on or off while browsing the web. Also the "End" key is far from the other navigation keys with many other keys in between them. So, "End" key is useless.
"Home", "Pg up" and "Pg down" are small and located side to side, instead of vertically disposed. This is no intuitive at all.
Bottom line: almost impossible to surf the web or to edit texts using the navigation keys. Most daily tasks have become extremely painful.
The touchpad buttons are too stiff.
Space bar became noisy with less than 1 month of average use (not games). The loud sound resembles some rubber under the space key when pushing the key back to its normal position. Looks like a bird is singing under the keyboard while you're typing.
The right arrow key "invades" the numbers area.
I'm extremely disappointed. -
please any one can explain how to open the whole plastic in the back (the big one).I would like to access the msata SSD for caching. I didn't manage to open it after I unscrewed the screws. What is the method? Can you upload an image/video how to do that? what tool I have to use?
-
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
Did you remove all the parts from the accessible section and check for hidden screws?
-
What you mean when you say "hidden screws"? Can you upload an in image for explain?
-
I managed to open the laptop and I find the half-size mSata slot. what I have to set-up (in the Software side) for use the ssd as chching?

I am satisfied user of ASUS. Before I use N56VM. I again chose ASUS.
Now I decided to N551JK - CN211K. The NTB needed for the rapid video editing in Adobe Premiere. If I am forced to work in the field and then quickly send my work to the headquarters. However, I am disillusioned from color video display. The image is with a hint of orange. It is impossible to correct colors if the camera a little bad white balance.
The photo is displayed with the correct colors. A video image is in orange / yellow.
Could someone from your show as achieve the following standard color temperature?
Please excuse my English ... I used Google translate. -
Any chance you can explain how? Im having problems opening mine up -
You have to take a sharp knife (or somethine like this) and push it as deep as you can. Than, you have to shake it up and down gently. You should ensure that you get all the screws out before opening the case unless it will break.

Guys, I'm a little messed up, I've finally decided to buy the Asus N551, the problem is, I can't truly find the differences between:
N551JK and N551JM
I saw last one counts with the GeForce GTX860M, is that the only difference?
Is the IPS panel the same in both?
Does JM version solve the WiFi problems from the JK?
I hope you can help me out, thanks in advance -
I just ordered the N551JK-FH71-CB from Best Buy Canada on sale for $1130 - http://www.bestbuy.ca/en-CA/product...spx?path=aa69a29b1ad0453dd5f2c7236cddfebcen02
Does anyone own this particular model and can confirm whether the screen is IPS or not? I know the Best Buy product description does say IPS but I find that Best Buy's product descriptions are often inaccurate. -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
Since it's on the way you can look up the monitor hardware ID when you get it.
-
-
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
Go into device manager, open up monitors and look at the properties of the built in monitor, go to details and select hardware IDs.
-
My Asus N551JM has Samsung IPS panel at least. Model ID: SDC324C. But you could also get an IPS panel from LG.
-
-
Thanks to everyone who replied. I received my laptop today and checked the hardware id. It is the same as the previous two poster's: SDC324C, meaning it is IPS!

My N551JM came with Intel 7260N wifi, works fine for me as I have no need for AC wifi.

So I returned the N551JK and got the N551JQ instead. The screen on the N551JQ is LGD042C. The sharpness and brightness is not as good as the Samsung panel
How do I find out if LGD042C is IPS?
