According to this review its not that easy to swap. Since I cannot find a map of this laptop I cannot judge for myself.

Does anyone know how the inside of the laptop (where Wi-Fi adapter goes) looks?
Or better yet, did someone already try to swap the Mediatek Wi-Fi adapter?
I would like to know if it can be replaced with the Intel® Dual Band Wireless-AC 7260 adapter.
    Thank you.

We all know by now this adapter is the main bottleneck of this otherwise outstanding ASUS model.
Beats me why they decided to save a couple of pennies on the Wi-Fi adapter...

Actually N551JM available in Poland has Intel Wi-Fi so probably it will be also available in other countries.

Any idea if the price had dropped over Black Friday at Microcenter?

    For $999, this laptop is a steal !! :)

The silver keyboard is the only thing stopping me from buying this in a heartbeat :(

Still regret not buying the G550jk, I will forever hate Asus for discontinuing it and replacing it with a subpar G551 and N551

The price @ Microcenter so far is still the same, as when they started selling this item. Even before & during Black Friday sales. The price has had a $100 off since its launch.

I have a question about the ASUS N551JM-CN078H.

Are there different versions around as far as TN / IPS screens are concerned? I want to buy this laptop (see link below) and am afraid it might not have IPS display. I read somewhere that the G551's come with both TN and IPS versions so that's why i'm careful.

All it says is that it's LED-Backlight, and the specifications listed on these websites are not always fully correct so it could be the one with an IPS display.

    https://www.digitec.ch/de/s1/produc...710hq-16gb-win-81-notebook-2758987?tagIds=614

I can't just buy it and see for myself because the return policies are different in Switzerland.

Also, are all of them equipped with Maxwell GPUs? Or are there Kepler versions floating around as well?

mby the guys at the store just read the label or something tho i think im also sure all N551JM should come with an ips display...

on the ASUS website they list following versions possible:

    15.6" 16:9 HD with EWV (1366 x 768) /FHD EWV LED Backlight/IPS FHD (1920x1080) Asus Splendid Video Intelligent Technology, Zero Bright Dot , anti-glare

All I know is that the J K should not have TN panels floating around in them. For 100% you should contact ASUS through facebook. They helped me in a heartbeat when I asked if the WIFImodule could be replaced easily...

Just got back from Micro Center at Orange County.

The N551JK which was on display had an AUO TN panel which was also present on the G551.

The older N550JK has the newer Samsung touch panel replacing the older LG one. Verified with HWInfo.

No visible backlight bleed (max brightness black background on paint) at all on the new Samsung touch panel. This was verified by ultrabookreview for the same matte panel.

The N550JK is so much more aesthetically pleasing to the eye with better build quality, keyboard and design than the fugly plastic and fat N551

My friend bought a N550JK today.

I asked my friend to boot after purchase and turned out the touchscreen didnt work.

So exchanged it on the spot for another new one.

I feel Asus has grown rapidly in size and their Quality Control is not able to keep up.

I also saw the 5k iMac and a thing of beauty it was !!

Asus has disappointed everyone having taken steps backward in the design of the N551 and G551.

    I had the same impression.

Not "everyone". N551 has following advantages:
    * Easy access to HDD/RAM/WiFi.
    * Removable battery.
    * Better sound quality (speakers play towards user, not into the table). Try watching movie in the bed when laptop is lying on the quilt.
    * Fan exhaust doesn't heat up the display.
    * Build quality seems better in respect to DVD player. N550 had problems with closing the tray.

    Regards

Despite those minor drawbacks, I still like the N/G550JK design.I think you will too when you see both in person.

Yep when I chatted with them online, I was told it was IPS. But its not. When the store employee checked, the N551JK entry was annotated as IPS lol

Also the clickpad on the N550 is way better than the N551 which is similar to Acer V17 Nitro.

I was looking forward to the V17 Nitro but the build quality is nowhere near Asus.

The V17 had a very nice bright IPS matte display bu the keyboard and clickpad ruin it for me.

EDIT: Also despite the N550JK is not as bright as the V17 Nitro even though both are 300 nits. I think because of the glare/touchscreen, the brightness is lower. The V17 edges it wth 330 nits

The fan exhaust system on the N550jk was one of the vest systems. It just worked. The heat doesnt affect the system and its really hard to overheat the laptop even when its on a bed (because the exhaust still has places to go).

I've got strange problem with hibernation.

When I close the lid, the laptop goes to sleep. After 180 minutes it should hibernate. But instead it wakes up. Then after ten minutes of inactivity it goes to sleep again. And situation repeats.

In Windows log there is information that the reason for waking up is pressing button on the case but this is not true as it happens every three hours throughout entire night.

Do you have any idea how to fix it?

This is what I was told after contacting several Norwegian net shops about whether this laptop has an IPS monitor:

    N551JM- CN040H: IPS
    N551JM CN093H: Not IPS

    I've no idea about N551JM- CN078H

Hey guys I'm having problems with white noise on my ASUS N551JM

I can hear it when i lower the volume to 0 and also the subwoofer emits it at times on idle

I think i read somewhere the solution to the problem but i forgot what it was... My drivers are all updated, is my laptop faulty or is there a fix for it?

Here is a link to some other guys that were having white noise, and it was also coming from their headphones. The solution that seemed to help was uninstalling the Realtek Driver and reinstalling the latest one. Here is the link:

    hope this helps.

Has anyone had problems with backlight bleeding? I just bought N551JK and I have some issues with backlight bleeding. Also one of the USB ports is very tight and my Sonicmaster subwoofer doesn't work at all. I think I have to send this one back but I'm worried if the new one will have even worse issues with backlight bleeding.
    ZeX9lpJ.jpg

What I was pleasantly surprised with was that this model had Intel Dual Band Wireless-N 7260 already installed, so I had no problems with my Wi-Fi.

Sorry to hear about your problems.I got my N551 a week ago and I am pretty happy with it. On mine, the USB plug on the side where the DVD drive is, was really tight when I first got it, but it seems to be loosening up after plugging and unplugging after awhile .As far as the screen bleeding, it isn't present on my unit. The screen is gorgeous and is one of the best I've seen, super crisp & no glare. The sound is pretty good once it is configured in the audio wizard and the sub is working OK, except that the plug needs to be wiggled a little to make a connection. The Wi-Fi card that came with it was an Asus generic card as far as I can tell, but due to the reviews, I picked up for $28 an intel 7260 ac-R and installed it, and it is working flawlessly, along with the BT. It really pulls the signals in from lots of houses in the neighborhood. What I really like, is the laptop has enough juice to play back and edit 4K movie files.

Yeah, I think this is a really good laptop at this price range (1000€). I just have to buy and install an SSD and after that I'm quite sure this will be almost perfect laptop for me. But first I have to send this back and I can only hope that the new one has a screen with no bleeding.

BTW, have you tried to calibrate your display? I think the colors are too orange but I haven't had enough time to do the calibration.

Why is the N551 listed as 4K display? does it mean is produces 4K thru HDMI, or the laptop display is actually 4K? In the detailed spec, it doesn't show 4K display option.

Just got the N551JM in Hungary. Damn, this TN screen is ing awful. Only thing that is bothering me. Had an IPS screen for over 2 years and now this. Never thought it could be so much worse.

Do any of you know which model of IPS panel I can get to replace this? I saw that is not a big deal to open the notebook and replace the screen once you got the right model. Maybe the N551JK IPS screen is good for it, isn't?

Amazon US is now offering the JQ model with the 3D sense camera, and it states it's IPS touchscreen, but not sure if it is actually touchscreen. Also, it uses the 845m video card. Didn't last year model use the 850m? Why are we going backward. Asus is really confusing us. Just make a couple of models and sell the same everywhere.
    Amazon.com : ASUS N551JQ-AS71 15.6? Full-HD Touchscreen Laptop w/ RealSense 3D Camera, Quad Core i7, 8GB RAM & 1TB HDD (Gray Silver) : Computers & Accessories

Here in Canada, it seems only the JK model is available, no touch screen, no 3D camera, but uses the 850 card and IPS available in some models.

I have the exact same question than SpyCam! I buy the N551JK, but the HDD is 1TO only 5400RPM and there is no msata 24gb Half-sized into it. I would know if we can add a msata (it is half-sized i think) into it, and how it is recognized. Is it recognized, even if it isn't a factory install? Can we choose between caching or normal HD? Do we loose the garantee if we add one? (Because we need to open the laptop’s entire plastic back)

Thanks a lot! (And sorry for my bad english)

Hi! I have a question about the wifi card. Do you have to install/uninstall drivers when you switch the Asus generic card with an Intel 7260 AC card? And can you receive wifi ac signals with this card?
Thank you for your help! :)

@ilitan, before I even powered on the N551 out of the box, I installed the Wi-Fi card (super easy) it was recognized and working right a way, and windows installed the drivers automatically. It was working fine, but I decided to download the Intel drivers for the 7260 ac R & update the installed generic drivers. If you do get this card (there are 2 with the same number) make sure that you get the one that is a "R" for revision, which is the newest one. As far as receiving ac signal you need to have an ac capable router which I don't have yet. As for installation, two mini phillips screws hold the bottom cover on, and once off, the ram, HD, & Wi-Fi is all there to swap out should it be needed.

I have read on some polish forum (through google translate) that you can't access the mSATA slot this easy, you need to unscrew a lot of screws including some hidden ones and then to get access to mSata, you would need to unsolder one wire and that is a breach of warranty...

    Ok, thank you!
So i'll replace the wifi card and i think i'll buy a SATA SSD to replace the HDD.
But.. is the normal HD slot a SATA 6Gb/s or a 3Gb/s? I want to be sure before buying a SSD for it.
    Thanks!

Not sure of the speed of the SATA slot. I replaced my factory SATA HD 1TB 7200RPM, with a Samsung 850 EVO 500GB SSD, & I will mount the 1TB HD where the DVD drive is, as I require the need of more storage than the use of the DVD drive. For use of the DVD drive that I removed, I'll mount it in a portable DVD USB caddy and plug it in when needed. The difference between the speed using the SSD is phenomenal, with boot time taking just seconds. Any of the brand names for SSD's should work, (2.5 x 9mm size) & the factory caddy can be used, but not sure about installing mSATA drives.

Hi! Do you found a solution to your problem? I have the same problem. I uninstall and reinstall Realtech Drivers, but it doesn't change anything. Thank you!

I've been planning on getting the N551JQ and swapping it out with a 500SSD.
My main use will be for photoshop, but I've heard mixed reviews on the screen quality. Thoughts?
My current is a 2010 MacBook Pro pos.. I'm looking for a better resolution.

I have bought 2 weeks ago an N551JK-CN157H
    Specs:
    I7-4710HQ
    GTX 850M with 2gb DDR3
    750GB seagate 5400rpm (ST750LM022 HN-M750MBB)
    8GB DDR3L memory
    Intel Dual band Wireless-N 7260
Samsung IPS FHD LED screen SDC324C

Generally I am happy about the laptop but there is one thing that bothers me alot, that is the wifi reception.
Stock mine had the intel Dual Band Wireless-N 7260 I replaced it with an Intel 7260 AC dual band.
    Reception didn't improve.
On the 5ghz band i have -67 db and the 2.4ghz -51 db. (measured with Acrylic Wi-Fi)
I am only 3-4 meters away from the router, direct in sight.
I plugged in the wifi card an external antenna (antenna from an old laptop) and the reception is perfect then (like my old laptop)

Is there an HowTo to open up the laptop? The back plastic cover, and the screen?
I removed all the screws from the underside, but the plastic cover wouldn't open, and i dont want to use brute force i might bend the aluminum.
The N550 howto cannot be used.

I also have a slight humm from the subwoofer, the headphone jack i havent tested that yet.

I have just bought an Asus n551jq with the same specs as SuperKoe and am having real problems with it. It is extremely slow, even compared to my venerable 8-year-old Compaq. I have timed IE at 1 min 20 secs to load, with another 15 secs before I can type in a URL. Has anyone else had these problems and is there a quick fix that I am not aware of?
