All you need to do is just remove one screw from the bottom compartment and you will see the two RAM slots:

Hi all,
I recently purchased an N56VZ and based on what I have read in this forum am now desperately trying to get 2x8Gb of CMSX16GX3M2A1600C10 ram to boot. One of either ram stick works fine in either slot but when I put both sticks in the same time the screen simply remains blank after power on. I initially tried with the bios the machine came with and when that didn't work I updated to 211 with no change. I should mention that the model is german and that I have replaced the original hard drive with another. I have also replaced the dvdrom with a caddy sdd although I don't see why that would make a difference. Everything else seems fine. Is there something I am forgetting? -
It is not supported by the board.
Only the new N56 that are being launched this month support the 16GB configuration. -
..they all have the same motherboard, and they all support 16Gb. It's just that Asus has locked the ram-timing in the bios. So you need to buy ram with the same timing (or better timing) than the ones that came with the laptop. To get the same braindead timing on the new ram, that may or may not cause faults and/or cause errors. Or optionally be way too low for the new ram, so that you're not really getting the most of the new and expensive chips you just bought.
The guy from GentechPC was kind enough to test a few types for us further back in the thread. Just refer to that, and the timing on those ram-chips, if you really need 16Gb.
Does ^the post over there mean there's another bios version coming out, by the way? ... -
And if that is the N56vz, how is one supposed to get to the wireless card...? -
I just recieved my N56vz from Gentech and slid the 500 gig drive into the second bay and installed a Samsung 830 as the main drive (I'm editing video with Adobe CS6). I did have to update the bios to 211 to get the drives to work but it's fine now. I added the two Corsair 8gig ram for a total of 16gig and the bios reads the RAm but each time it comes out of hibernation, or boots up fresh, it goes into bios screen. I have been just hitting F10 and moving right along but is there a setting I need to work to get it to quit that and go into Windows like it is supposed to?

Is it possible to get a list with exactly which ram that works, even under stress/load?
Or will any 1600MHz do the job? -
You know 8GB might be plenty for me now but later I don't know.
What 8Gb sticks do you guys personaly use to get 16gb out of your nv56vz? For the money I think I may get an SSD instead he most ram I could use is for BF3 and think 8GB is plenty. -
SSD is the way to go. -
I have AB71 version. What RAM speeds does this version support? 1666mhz? 1333mhz ??
I need to know this in order to buy my next upgrade.
Thanks.

Thanks for the reply I have to check that out later, thanks again -
Reporting in with my upgrade success.
N56VZ 650m i7 3610qm 8gb laptop bought in the states in early august 2012 (upgraded bios 211).
1st attempt:
Patriot PSD316G1600SK PC3-12800 (1600MHz) CAS 11
At first things seemed to go without a hitch. However, while doing 3d gaming the laptop would crash out with that popular screen corruption freeze that's been seen in other threads.
Repeated the gaming sessions several times and every-time it would crash out within 1-10 minutes with the same exact screen corruption freeze.
2nd attempt (after finding this thread):
As per GenTechs suggestion I popped in a couple corsair 8gb sticks. (CMSX16GX3M2A1600C10). I was a little bit skeptical as someone else had freezing problems even after using this ram. However I gave it a go and so far have had 0 issues.
Stress tested it buy running 2 VMware machines each running a single 3d game. And outside of them I ran 2 copies of another game and ran an instance of "MSI Kombustor" running the benchmark in demo mode. CPU temp peaked quickly and stayed at around 90-98c the nvidia gpu hovered around 70c. After a steady 90 mins of playing around in the running games the laptop experienced no issues and it didn't get that screen corrupt crash that I had been expecting.
This was the most severe stress test but I've tried a few others (multiple instances of games running for periods of 10-30 mins) and I'm satisfied that the corsair CMSX16GX3M2A1600C10 fixed my 16gb ram issues. -
I want to buy this laptop and upgrade the memory to 16gb also.
The laptop is coming from the shop with a 4 gb upgrade, that is 12 gb in total (8+4). They are not willing to replace all the memory with 2x8 corsair sticks, so my question is: is the original memory compatible with a new 8gb corsair stick? what manufacturer is the original memory?
thank you. -
Hi guys,
I recently picked one of these machines on Amazon.com and then I found your thread about upgrading its RAM to 16 GB
I decided to give it a try with Kingston HyperX (KHX16S9P1K2/16, 2 x 8 GB, 9-9-9 timings) and I am very happy to tell you it worked without a problem
So do not worry, you can upgrade your laptop's RAM to 16 GB. I added a few photos here as a proof

Vladimir

Hey! I'm thinking of buying version of N56VZ with 6 Gb RAM preinstalled (because it is a bit cheaper).
Would all your techniques of placing 2x8 Gb memory stick still work with my chosen hardware options?
Thank you. -

I have N56VZ-RH71 from Microcenter (bought at the beginning of November), BIOS 211, Samsung 830 SSD, and the recommended (by GenTech) 16GB RAM from Corsair CMSX16GX3M2A1600C10. When I put both sticks in the computer it won't boot. The light for the power source turns on, and I can tell it's on, but the screen doesn't turn on; it seems to be stuck... I tried all possible combinations with a single 8GB stick in both slots and it works fine, so the RAM seems to be working, but when both are in it won't boot. I tried to put a 4GB stick (the one that it came with) and a 8GB and that wouldn't work either. I also tried to reset the "defaults" in the BIOS; no change...
Any thoughts? I don't see any RAM settings in the BIOS. Is there an advanced BIOS mode that would allow me to tweak the RAM settings?
Thanks! -
Hi,
I just got CMSX16GX3M2A1600C10 from amazon, and inserted them to my N56VZ-DS71. The bios does not show up. I upgrade my bios to 211 with no change. Is there anything missing? -
I have the same problem as the last 2 users. I bought the the same ram from corsair and with each one of them it does boot, but when I use both at the same time, the bios does NOT show up. Mine is a N56VZ-S4095V with 211 bios version. Please help...
PS. Using just one of them, and the stock 4GB ram underneath the corsair 8GB the system works, having a total of 12GB. Don't know if it is stable but at least works...If someone knows how to have booth corsair memories at the same time please let us know -
I had the same problem as the last 3 users! I bought "Corsair Vengeance 16GB (2x8GB) DDR3 1600 MHz (PC3 12800) Laptop Memory (CMSX16GX3M2A1600C10)" from Amazon, and when both of my RAM slots are filled, my computer won't start... Other than a few lights in the front. I have Windows 8 Pro 64bit Installed right know, but I'm going to try installing win7 64bit and see if it fixes it. I'll let you know! Please let me know if you figure out what I need to do!
Thanks guys. -
hi guys
I also have the problem. I just received my 16 GB and it's not working. However, it is working fine for each stick alone.
My computer is N56VZ-ES71 and was working on bios 204.
I upgraded it to 211 but the problem is still here.
I don't know if it important to mention, but i have window 7, 64.
Hope somebody can help us
Thanks -
i've got the same problem on a ASUS N56VZ-DS71 bios 211 windows 7 64bit if i put 1 stick of the corsair vengeance it works but if i put both it turns on but doesnt boot no keyboard light or nothing
-
It's probably because the corsair vengeance ram is cl10 ram meant to run at 1600Mhz? It'll work fine to have one chip with tighter timing than it's meant to be run at (specially when it's run at 1333mhz), but errors show up more easily when they're run in dual channel.
(Ram chips are great, though. So be sure to write Asus support and tell them how much they fail at programming bios.) -
The only solution I can think of is to flash a modded BIOS. Maybe specifying the timings instead of having them in auto will solve this, but the official BIOS hides a lot of features. The only thing I just can't understand is how does this memory work in some n56vz and not ALL n56vz? That's just weird...
-
..The corsair vengeance chips come in at least two different flavors.
And yes.. modded bios. But just allowing spd-timing, possibly xmp profiles, different volt, and setting the dram:bus multipler differently. And that would be it. It's set to specific timings right now, that's what's causing the problems. According to one Asus rep, they've locked the ram-timing to "prevent overclocking". *shrug*
If there was an idiot proof way to clear the cmos, I'd be making a bios with something more sensible right now. ..I guess if I can find the red and black wire on the mainboard somewhere.. -
ASUS N56VZ XTU unlock requested
But this bios cannot be flash with ASUS WinFlash or the bios Easy Flash because it's not an official rom... Maybe other programs like fpt can flash it (montioned by the user Firon in this Thread), but I don't have any experience with these programs...
And I really dont want all options unlocked, only the ones related to the memory so I could boot with the corsair's 16gb... -
Hi everyone I am new to this forum.
I recently purchased an
Asus N56VZ-DH71-CA
Spec wise:
1920x1080 HD Display
LED Backlit Keyboard
750GB HDD 7200RPM
Windows8
8GB Ram (1600mhz)
Intel Core i7-3630QM
NVIDIA GT650M
Blue-Ray Drive
Side note
:
The computer has been fully updated with what ever window's updates and the Asus one told me to update.
The Main reason of posting is because I got the computer to run on 16GB ram
Corsair Vengeance 16GB DDR3 (2x8GB) CMSX16GX3M2A1600C10
The other reasons I'm posting is Common issue with other users:
A) Can someone link me to the asus page where someone started a complaint about the subwoofer making noise (i'm just too lazy to read through everything and find it. Sorry!)
B) My trackpad sometimes is wonky double scrool doesn't work sometimes (I don't think there's a driver solution yet?)
C) Is it just my N56 or is the MIC on it horrible for Skype? (I sound like i'm in a tunnel / gymnasium)
D) My Desktop also doesn't remember how to keep it's setting to not show desktop icons. (it comes back after a restart/shutdown)
Other than the few Issues I have been pretty satisfied with the Specs on this Laptop def bang for $$$. But after Ram SSD and a Spyder4 Elite it'll cost me around $2000 tax in!
Next up on my update would be ordering in a 256GB M4 SSD Since it seems to be reliable.
Any ips display retrofit yet? All that's out there is the LG one on ebay and I don't even know if it works! -
For those who having issues with Corsair Veneance RAM may want to check the IC on the module, they could be different on each batch they shipped and all major brands does that. It's probably why some worked and some doesn't:
My suggestion is get generic brand but with Micron IC, the Micron IC works without any problems:

For all those having problems with 16 GB on N56VZ !!
I had the same problem. My laptop wouldn`t boot with BIOS 204 or BIOS 211, so I personally called ASUS and told them about the problem. They knew about it and already had a BIOS lined up for those with this problem. You can find it here : NB-TSD Download (it is the 215 version) . It is not on the ASUS official website but the tech guy gave it to me and ensured me it is ok. So I installed it and I CAN CONFIRM IT IS OK ! My computer boots and it seems to be ok. -

Did anyone notice that the freezes do not happen when you play games or otherwise test the N56VZ with the Integrated Graphics ?
-
And a guy emailed me the picture of his Corsair Vengeance with Micron IC ( D9PCP) that didn't work, his Micron IC is different than the Micron we have ( D9QBJ):
There is no way to know what kind of IC you gonna get till you receive it, so shop by brand most likely won't work. -
Maybe a modified BIOS with open RAM timings would help...
-
So will some of these same issues show up when simply installing 2 4gb sticks?
Im just wondering because I just ordered some Crucial memory 2x4gb, pc 12800, but when I installed 2x4gb of pc 10600, the computer froze and freaked out. -
I had recently upgraded my n56vz with a samsung SSD but I would like to upgrade the ram to 16GB.
Did you get it working with 16GB gskill? which model, timings and chip is mounted on the modules?
Thanks!
Which version of bios do you have installed? -
I just bought a pair of these:
Amazon.com: Komputerbay 16GB (2x 8GB) PC3-10600 10666 1333MHz SODIMM 204-Pin Laptop Memory 9-9-9-24 for PC only - not MAC: Electronics
and mi Asus N56VM (i7 ivy bridge) does not support them, think so...
I tried them separately and they work fine, but when I put them both together, my notebook doesn't reach even the Bios screen.
Any help?? Am i doing something wrong here??
Thanks! -
Hi all,
a little update by me: two weeks ago I tried two Corsair CMSX16GX3M2A1600C10 (not Micro IC) and laptop didn't boot.
Today I tried G.Skill F3-1600C11D-16GSQ and every works fine! My laptop is a n56vz-s4196h with Bios 215.
I hope this will help. -
It can be os limitations:
Memory Limits for Windows Releases (Windows) -
Ok. After a bunch of years, talking to Microsoft spawn and Sony minions, I thought I had heard literally everything. But that one really takes the cake. Microsoft actually have an official table up on their web-site that declares openly that they're limiting the /used space/ of a system's reported ram to 8Gb on Win7 home.
Freaking amazing. What's next, they're going to disable my right mouse-button on Wednesdays? -

I just purchased the Asus N56-VJ WH-71.
After reading this thread I thought I had made a mistake as I also purchased some RAM. I went ahead and tried it and had no problems. Mind you, this is a new computer running Windows 8. I did all the recommended Windows upgrade right out of the box.
I then istalled 2x8gb of Corsair Value Select memory model number CMSO16GX3M2A1333C9
I rebooted the machine which took about 5 minutes (long enough that I started to get worried) but then looked in my system and it showed the 16gb installed. I played Torchlight II for a couple of hours to see if I could get the computer to lock up like others have mentioned but had no problems other than a batter that died after only 1.5 hours.
On a side note, the computer did get pretty warm on the upper left corner.
I have already purchased a SanDisk 240GB SSD which I have not decided if I should install it or just send it back as this computer is great and is much faster than my desktop which is a few years old. Any thoughts on if installing the SSD? Is worth the $170 I paid for it?
Thanks,
The only reason I joined this forum was to let y'all know. Hopefully this helps someone. Any thoughts on the SSD are appreciated. -
In essence; yes your purchase was totally worth it. -
are these going to work??? I could buy them but first I need a little help/advise on this Corsair RAM model
