No, just depends on how the hdd is set up. You basically need to make the mbr point to the partition with grub. Then have grub chainload Win7 again. Should be set up by default.
For whatever reason the retailer has still not sent out my laptop, so I don't know exactly how the extra two partitions or dual hdd/sdd setups affect any of this. I'm guessing that the boot point is actually the sdd, to make sure the entire "2s insta-thaw" thing is going to work. And that you've modified a boot point that isn't used.
So if you go into the bios and find the boot priorities, and set it to the other disk, that kind of thing, that might work.

Hey I have the exact problem as you do with the sound stuttering except mine does it while.playing Diablo 3 as well. I sent it back do your speakers crackle as well?

Thank you very much for the info.
So we can say its around 4 hours for normal web browsing / music streaming,
compared to g55 2:30 hours right? -
mirado-
Hmmmm yea i guess... but it has only happend while normal browsing..i haven't had the problem since they cleaned my computer from that *virus*. I havent tested on a game, i will thought and i will update.
weedv2-
I am getting 3:20 hours on balanced power plan, on battery saving it can reach 4 hours -
Lets do it straight fw. Ill do a lil bit of gaming, but it will also be my work computer. What do you think?
G55/75
or
N56/76
I like both designs, but N56 extended battery life kind of lean me to it, but the 650 dd3 leans me to g55 as g55 have 660.
N56 has better sound, and its thiner apparently and smaller.. but g55 is more powerfull and cool... -
If anyone has more questions I will be getting my n56 tomorrow and I would love to answer questions, especially to people considering buying it.
-
I got mine today, but there's one problem. The subwoofer connection is bad, and only works when I push the jack inside. Anybody have similar problems?
And totally unrelated, the ethernet slot looks like an USB. I had no idea why my USB key didn't work before I tried the actual USB slots. -
I sort of thought the fact that it only fits inside at a 45 degree angle - if you use force - would clue people in.
Seriously, though. You're not the first person to do that. "So.. um, no, you see.. see these metal shavings that come off? That's not supposed to happen". -
At first I got 6.8 and after updating the driver I have 7.1 Unfortunately Asus has not updated the correct driver download but I was able to find it with driveragent.com (after paying thirty bucks!).
I updated the following drivers:
Atheros AR9485WB-EG Wireless Network Adapter = Driver: 9.2.1.470
Atheros Bluetooth Suite 64 = Bluetooth_Azurewave_Win7_64_Z740103
Intel (R) HD Graphics 4000 = Driver 8.15.10.2712
The only drivers I cant find anywhere are the following two. If anyone knows please let me know
Other Devices - Mass Storage Controller
SD host adapters - ADA Atandard Compliant SD Host Controller (there is a driver installed but it has error code 10). -
Alright, I now have this computer and must say I really like it. I don't want to start personalizing it too much though, as I want to install an SSD for the OS. For now I only have the Win7 ISO and a USB drive but I'm not able to figure out how to make it boot from USB - if at all possible.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to make it boot from USB, or do I have to wait until I get my hands on the Win7 disc?
Thanks. -
I only ran Bad Company 2 and Arma 2 (DayZ!) so far. BC2 was smooth (45fps avg on 1080p normal-high quality), though I did experience some flickering. The flickering might be related to the game though, I've never got it to run very stable on my desktop machine either.
Arma 2 is a different story, 25fps avg on 1080p normal quality. I'm hoping the first official Nvidia driver will improve things a bit here, anybody any info on the ETA?
About the clean OEM install. Even if you would use the license that came with the laptop, you would still need a win 7 dvd right? -
You do, but you can download it directly from Digital River and then use your license number on the bottom of the laptop. Be sure you have the factory driver disk handy because it will not re install the wireless or Ethernet drivers automatically.
-
Just burn the ISO to a disk and use that. You can set up the USB for installs with the downloadable usb installer tool from microsoft but unless you install OS on a frequent basis I would just use a DVD-R and burn it.
Microsoft Store Online
Edit: Or use Gommie's instructions below. I like this better....no third party software to download. -
I installed Windows 7 from USB using these steps:
For booting from the USB, press F2 while booting. If you get a message during install telling you to browse for DVD drivers, simply turn off and try again. I have no idea what causes this, but try at least 5 times before you give up.
When Windows is up and running, run "InstAll" from the driver CD. -
PS: You dont need to format as FAT32, user NTFS its far faster.
-
I did so with my arch installation, and kubuntu usually does this by it self. Still it boots right into windows. I can't remember what it was i read about bios, but it had something to do with the first or second option in the bios boot menu. Not the 'pxe oprom' but the other choice. That one is gone now, since I upgraded my bios, maybe someone with the old 202(i think) bios can tell me what the other option is?
Think I'll just delete my MBR, then I will know for sure whether it is in use or not

Hi
I've read most of this thread and thanks guys. All the pros and cons here is very helpfull!
I just wanted to clarify one thing before I buy this laptop.
Can it bitstream HD audio through HDMI?
I want to bitstream Dolby True HD and DTS HD MA.
I've asked Asus without any luck and I have also posted this question in nvidias forum. -
I'm also looking at this one after Samsung made a colossal failure in putting a substandard display in the Z5C. I'm so disappointed, has anyone made direct user comparison between the Z5C and the n56?
-
Haha. Yeah, that was the.. other reason why I was leaning towards picking up a laptop with an nvidia card over ati. It's supposed to work. And I know the port and the card will support dts/hdcp/hdmi1.4.
But...
I'm not sure yet if it actually does work on the asus config until I try it. I mean, we have this bios annoyance with sata3 not being "supported". Along with no bios settings for disabling or enabling optimus.
There are other manufacturers who have those settings exposed, but Asus seems to have chosen to simply remove them. And hdcp/hdmi1.4 functions aren't /specifically/ advertised. So.. ..I mean, nvidia cards have supported hdcp since.. I don't know.. 2006 on all their cards. So I'm not expecting any problems. But still.. -
#169 This transfer-rate was reported on a Danish forum:
"496 read & 407 write"
About the same with the old bios ver202, so guess it should run sataIII??? -
I EXACTLY LIKE YOU!!! SOMEONE ANSWER THIS POOR GUY looooool
i was about to buy the samsung but this morning i read lots of threads saying bad stuff about the display, touch pad , the speakers and worse video card against this Asus. And at least in portugal the samsung is 200 more expensive -
Oi! Good news!
-
Ok ... FOR SOME REASON IT TURNS out that it was the virus that was causing the sound distortion because i am not longer getting the sound distortion WOW...no more problems, and im not longer lagging on Games, Like vindictus runs smooth on ultra high settings
Can anyone recommend a good free antivirus?? -
Will this thing support 16GB RAM ? (2 x 8)
-
i think one module of 4Gb is solded to the motherboard, so you can only change one slot.
-
Yeah, I Got this far too. Was hoping for someone to try it out
I have heard that there should be problems with this when the Gfx runs Optimus with the on board gpu. But I guess I just have to try and see
-
I'm planning on purchasing this laptop and installing my own SSD. A 9.5mm SSD works right? Or do I need a 7mm one?
Also, is it worth it to order a 1103 killer with 3rd antenna mod on this? Or just go for all stock/default? -
The disk already in the notebook is 9.5mm, so that works fine.
I didn't try, but it's relatively spacey under the back panel, so I think 11mm will fit as well. With a scream, as they say..
No, get this:
-
No
The Asus N56VZ has 2 upgradeable slots for memory. Up to 16 GB ram
You can clearly see both ram slots are upgradeable (both have clips) in the video at 9:42.
The subwoofer works ONLY when plugged in.
It's NOT wireless !! -
Yeah sounds right, I think the Samsung is the only one that for some unexplicable reason hard wired one of their DIMMs.
Does this thing come in the box with the n56?...
-
Yeah, it does come with that subwoofer, check the beginning of the video link.
On a side note, Asus made some great decisions with the new N series.
I'm looking at a N56 with an i5 and a regular dvdrw (because I'll replace it with a hdd caddy anyway).
Looking at the official site, looks like the i5 version comes with a smaller brick, which is good
(90w instead of the 120w for the i7)
And the i5 version is a little thinner. -
Ok, is it just me or does any of you who already have the computer notice difference with the subwoofer?, to be honest i don't notice any difference with it or without it, i been listening music with the volume to 50%, youtube 50% or at 100%, also one of the programs that came with the computer which is MAxxAudio.
If any of you do notice the difference let me know, it could be im actually deaf, or i got a defective one.. -
Did you plug in the subwoofer ?
Sorry to ask, but someone previosly thought it was wireless...
And I'm not sure, but maybe the laptop needs to also be plugged in... -
Is there a 14" version of this Ivy laptop?
-
Yes, the N46VZ...see this thread.
-
Just got my laptop and i am very pleased. The sound quality is amazing and i put an SSD in it which made a lot of difference. Games wise i have been able to EASILY run skyrim on high graphics settings (keeping in mind the fan is very quiet and the laptop didnt get very hot at all even after an hour and a half of straight gameplay). Boot time is around 12 seconds and my WEI is 7.1. tomorrow when i have more time i will be doing more detailed benchmarks but for anyone interested in buying this laptop i highly recommend it. If anyone has specific tests they would like me to run let me know and i will
-
Hahaha, nope, i did plugged in..i did check all of the videos and i seen difference but i dont know..Say anyone who hass added an SSD, what kind of a SSD should i buy? or where should i buy it.
-
i got a samsung 813 and its great (7.9 WEI). I had it installed by xoticpc where i bought it. I would highly recommend them because they have very good customer service however it isnt too hard to install one yourself...
I have one question about this laptop however....does anyone know how to change the fn keys so i dont have to hold the fn button in order to reduce sounds/brightness/etc. it is really bothering me
-
oh and buy your ssd on newegg.com no matter what one you get. As i said, i got the Samsung 830 (typo on my other post) and it is amazing
-
I would be happy if you could test if it supports hd audio bistreaming
-
Ok, just reveived my laptop. First question: how is your trackpad ? If you doubletap anywhere (not clicking) does it make a "cheap" sound, almost as if you were clicking? Overall looks nice, but i am not sure whether the trackpad is supposed to be like this or whether it is just mine?!
-
Yes, samsung is the one that have one module of ram solderer. Yes it comes and it is not wireless(although it would be awesome).
P.S. I don't really like the touchpad too -
not easy to describe what i mean. it seems as if the trackpad surface is slightly lose, maybe this has to be like this because of clickable surface, but it makes a cheap impression. if my finger is sweaty, and does not slide perfectly the surface clatters?!
-
Mm. If anyone would be able to test it, that would be great.
..the 650m card will support it, though. So the question probably is if the nvidia card is connected directly to the intel card, or if optimus is going to limit the functions in some way. Weird that Asus weren't able to answer that.
This is connected to the same thing about mirroring desktops as well. The 650m card would support a huge virtual desktop out on hdmi, aside and separate from the one you have on your screen. But the intel card won't support that fully. -
Heey, can i disable optimus?? My life battery is fluctuating alot, for seconds it says i have 4 hours but then i only have 2:40....When in balance i only have 2 hours...Anyone else getting bellow 3 hours on their computer?
-
Yes I notice it....but honestly I have extremely good hearing. This isnt going to produce bass liek a car sub....infact Sub is probably the wrong word to describe it. It adds a bit of depth to the lower notes but obviously is never going to move enough air to feel it like a traditional sub would. You can feel it working if you put your hand on it and if you listen closely when playing something with a lower note you will hear the difference.
-
If you have the Intel Display Audio installed among the Sound controllers in Device manager, then HDMI is attached to the Intel graphics.
-
Alright, Thanks for the reply. i was getting ready to return it lol
-
Hi there!!
I have bought also Asus N56VZ-DS71 and i wunder how can i disable hyper threading?? Because I dont find it on Bios
Or does it not have on this?? -
I fixed the subwoofer connection by inserting the jack, and using some force to align the connection with the chassis hole. Now it works great. The sound is not great, but much better than other laptops.
