It would be great to hear your experiences oppinions on the touchpad. brcause i dont know if it is just my model or if it is a regular issue. i dont want to send it back and then get another one where the touchpad is the same. dont get me wrong i want to keep it, just not worth te effort of returning if the y are all the same![]()

I don't know if this has been asked yet, but the primary HDD slot is SATA III enabled right?

Does anyones fan run constantly even under minimal use such as internet browsing and outlook? Is there any way to adjust this....

Was someone able to boot up the notebook with 16GB RAM? I just got two Corsair Vengeance 8GB 1600MHz SO-DIMMs but I'm unable to boot up with both sticks. I'm currently using 12GB (4GB stock + 8GB corsair).
Any ideas?
PS - Mine is a N56VM. -
Is it possible to replace the cd drive with an SSD?
-
-
Come on guys,
there must be at least 3-4 people who already own this
I somehow have the feeling that my Touchpad surface is not properly attached to the holding-unit underneath it Therefore, everytime i tap the surface (not click) it makes a clattering sound...
Is it the same with you guys, or did theyreally just screw my model up... ?
I would be very happy about replies as still have the chance to send it back the first two weeks. -
Quality control just isn't what it should be these days across the industry. The samsung 830 series SSD I put in my N56 just died after being in use for only 6 days. Going back to the stock HD,even temporarily, is a serious frustration after enjoying SSD speeds.

Hey!
Model: N56vz
OS: Win 7 x64 Premium home/Ultimate
I'm having some problems trying to install windows 7 on my ssd which i replaced for the bluray device. Tried to boot from usb cdrom/usb hardrive/usb memory but still same error message
Tried to load the usb driver when it asks for it. Any ideas? Have anyone else got it working? -
-
Don't know if it's the same I think the main problem is that windows has problem with usb 3.0 drivers but that's just a guess. Actually was really easy to replace the bluray tho just 2 screws then pull it out so havent tried to swap places-

Not ok Asus, a brand new machine... -

WEell, whoever is having problems with the fan. from my experience the fan is extremely quiet.. Even when i'm playing Dragon nest it still plays Cool even on High Settings
i have played Dragon Nest, and Vindictus for 16 hours straight and the fan never became load, and the temperatures were medium -
I mentioned earlier having problems getting the linux boot-loader running, do to the bios. What I think I was talking about
was the "The Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI)" described here:
Unified Extensible Firmware Interface - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
It was Archlinux I worked with the first time, and it is described here, how to handle it in Arch:
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Unified_Extensible_Firmware_Interface
I disabled UEFI in bios, and used lubuntu linux instead, and found out, that the installation by default set the usb-installation to be the boot point, so it could not boot the linux system on my hd without it, and then went on booting directly into windows. No comments
By the way I found this guide on how to actually install Arch on Asus n56vz with UEFI, 'optimus' and cuda. It's the semi-hard way, but just in case there is any interest. Haven't tried it yet.
Archlinux + CUDA on Ivy-Bridge + Kepler « It compiles
Nipsen have you started your linux adventure on your new asus yet? -
#216 Same here, never gets loud, not even when gaming a couple of hours, but it always spins...

damn, this seems like a nice computer!!!
I really want to get one, but I'm not sure where to buy it. Does anybody know where I can get the model with the full HD screen in matte/anti-glare (whatever you call it lol)
the only place i see that specifies matte/anti-glare is xoticpc...but that place has it on back order. is the one on excalibur (the one linked on the first page) matte/anti-glare full HD (best screen available)?
also, does anyone know if this laptop works with the free xbox deal from microsoft lol
thanks for any help! -
-
Random-
You can buy it with xotopic which has more cuztomization, or with Gentecpc.
the Full hd matte is the natural resolution. -
I'm so glad I tripped on the USB cord and crashed my Dell XPS 16 to the floor, cracking the monitor. The LCD was light leaking all over the place, it throttled, USB and wifi took forever to connect.
This computer is so much faster. I picked it up at J&R in NYC.
The trackpad is very sensitive, I've been turning it off and using a mouse. It doesn't have any give, in fact it's kind of hard to click the actual buttons.
Does anyone have an ICC profile they can upload? I can't find my hockey puck.
I plan on swapping the OD for a Samsung 830. What caddy should I get? (I'm in the US) Actually, I plan on putting the 750GB HDD in the caddy and putting the SSD under the wrist rest, I figure my hands will stay cooler that way. Do you think the HDD will get enough ventilation? -
If that doesn't work, I have no idea. -
Kramerz - as I recently learned, some SSd's are not compatible with UEFI enabled in your bios. I thought my samsung 830 had failed (after less than a week of use) but then read a couple of threads on how UEFI requires "gpt" partitions, and some SSD's are only stable with "mbr" partitions.
Long story short - I disabled UEFI in the ASUS bios, and had my drive up and running with a clean Win7 install 20 minutes later. Hope this solves your issue as well.

Go over to the "boot" menu and UEFI boot is the first option on the screen. Just disable it.
Hope this does it for you! -
How about temperatures?
Full load in gaming cpu/GPU? -
it sucks that there's no news about the 14" version being sold in the US

Hey everyone!
I'm thoroughly looking at buying this laptop (ASUS N56VZ DS71). I've been considering a bunch of different options with it, and I think I'm planning to remove/encase the optical drive in order to still be able to use it when I need to, and put a 12.7mm SATA HDD caddy in its place.
My question is, if I buy a samsung 830 series 128gb SSD separately, would I be able to install it and run it effectively? (I read on escapist's post about the UEFI and am wondering if any more problems have arisen) Also, I've read that its particularly thin; would I need some sort of extra securing to hold it in place?
I'm using a pretty outdated gaming laptop and am trying to reacquaint myself with the market in its current state, so I'm not very savvy with this yet...thanks for the help! -

Hi !
I've bought an Asus N76VZ yesterday and I have some problems.

Thank you -
Now i can buy it with piece of mind lol -

Okey guys, I have two problems with my new N56..
1) When I connect the external subwoofer (or whatever it is called) it just makes a clicking sound at about 2 Hz frequency. Absolutely no other sound is coming out. What the hell ?
2) The trackpad has come "loose" in the right lower corner so that it is actually higher than the rest of the chassis. It seems however to be properly fixed in the left lower corner, but still it's kinda irritating to see this all the time. And the click buttons really sucks hard, have to click precisely in the middle for it to respond. Do all laptops have these issues or is it just mine?
Bought in Norway btw. -
Anyone who can help me with some data from the bios boot section, on the asus n56/76? I have deleted the uefi boot entries!!!
Can reply here:

Strange stuff. Maybe it was lucky the store messed up my order after all.
The 2.5mm jack on the subwoofer - this is very likely a ground problem. Could be a design flaw.
Touchpad not fitting perfectly - this is sloppy assembly/assembly requiring too much precision. Seen that on some of the other asus computers as well. It's not there on the demo-units, but then you get things like the flaky buttons on the n/k53, the extra bend on the top of the snap-down chiclet keyboard on the u32u, etc, on the final versions.
Annoying stuff, because most of the models they have are actually excellent. But they do have these weird mistakes that seem to turn up. That aren't actually from cheap parts or bad assembly as such.. I mean.. let's be fair, you have small annoyances even on Macbooks. Open, unisolated connection from the jack to the amplifier in the iPhone - next to another soldered, unisolated connection to the battery -- for three and a half generations of the same design.. Happens..
Still -- annoying. -
An interesting thing happened, I changed the SATA disk to 256G SSD, before the change, I used Asus backup software to create DVD, after I finished the change, I used the dvd to restore the win7 system in SSD. After that, win7 rate only got 5.1 because of the garphic, I checked the device manage, Gt650 is there, working properly, not sure waht's wrong, any suggestion? Btw, you guys mentioned to use he'd handy to replace DVD with SSD or sata, but looks like the candy is black, where can I get a silver one which can match the side of n56, which also is silver, thank u guys very much in adavance!
-
I'm curious if anyone has been able to get 2560x1600 or 2560x1440 out of the HDMI port? I assume it's 1.4a, which I hear supports these resolutions, but I haven't found any monitors that support HDMI 1.4a yet. It sucks the N56VZ doesn't have DL DVI or DisplayPort outputs.
-
Better solution than buying a cable with hdmi in one end and dvi in the other, because there's no signal loss. -
-
I'm considering buying this laptop, i'm curious if it has everything i was looking for in my forum post: http://forum.notebookreview.com/wha...-help-choosing-buying-laptop.html#post8608018
The laptop definitely interests me, but i want as many second opinions as i can get, and info from current owners. Thanks -
^the thing is that if you're willing to sacrifice Skyrim and BF3, then you have a lot of good options out now that will last much longer as an office-computer out there. And the new Brazos 2.0 notebooks that should be just around the corner (intended to turn up around when school starts, I think), along with the trinity laptops - also should be really great picks. With 15tdw on the brazos 2.0, for example, against 35tdw on devices like the U32u (brazos 1), and 45tdw on an i7.
And that's just the processor. Meaning that you would get a 6xxx series apu/dx11 support on brazos 2 inlcuded in the 15tdw budget. That's very, very low. So if you're willing to sacrifice the blu-ray drive, the i7 processor, and the latest 3d games - you get a lot in return here.
On the other hand - and that's why I'm buying an n56 right now - if you want a reasonably low power rig that has acceptable/a bit above average 3d performance... and that doesn't melt the table it stands on when running at load.. then a setup with a 650m/i7 is probably the best pick. After that there will be the new i5 processors with lower tdw. And that would also work well for a semi-powerful gaming rig.
But there are no new nvidia cards coming up right now with higher performance and lower power-use/temperature than the 650m card. The gddr5 versions so far all draw more power, and have to do so to benefit from the better transfer rates on the bus. AMD is doing the same thing - the more powerful 7970m for example draws a lot of power and generates more heat again. On a different scale than the 650m..
So that means that for that specific "kind of powerful, but still portable" system, the n56 is a good pick, and will probably stay that way for a relatively long time.
Because there is nothing out there right now that both runs silent, is completely cool, and has BF3 in 1080p at ultra, etc.
And... I don't think it will turn up any time soon either. The Trinity apus for example might end up at something like 1500 marks in 3dmark11 if we're lucky. Most likely it won't be that high. And put together with a good (but reasonably cool) dedicated card, it might run at about the same as a 650m right now.. And then you're talking about that relatively high power-requirement again. So that's basically where you're at.
So - is four, four and a half hour on light load enough for a laptop? You won't get more out of the n56 without maybe some underclocking. And that's still.. above average for that type of rig..
Example: The Macbook Pro idles at about 50w. This is "extremely low", compared to laptops in the same class. I managed to get an n53tk (a6-apu/7670m) to run with 40% load (video, spotify, web, wifi) at 45w, with some underclocking. That meant exactly 4 hours. And I don't expect the n56 to get below 50 while doing any work, even if it might idle at a bit lower. Meaning that realistically we're probably looking at 3.5h if you're doing more than just checking your mail. I don't know if it will last very long while running 3d applications. Or if it will run at all - seems being unable to disable optimus might be a problem, according to people who has it.
So you're making a compromise either way here. Would it be possible to run BF3 at 720p in medium on one of the best Trinity processors only on the apu, for example? If that happens, it won't be much to brag about - but it might actually run like that for, say, four-five hours, and with the same performance on battery..
But.. yeah, I think that the digital only signal in a dvi port has enough pins for a signal capable of carrying 2560x1600 something. And it's not a conversion, it's just using the same signal on different pins.
That's the problem, though. A dvi out carries both an analog and a digital signal. .. And I think that that the point with the dual dvi-out. That you had another pair of analog connectors, using the same pin-layout on both connectors. But since it's only the digital signal on hdmi, you should be able to get a 2560.. etc out of one dvi connector, if it has all the pins..
So -- and I know I shouldn't insist on something I haven't tried. And there's always the possibility that the detection for output rates is capped in the driver, and so on -- but I'm pretty sure that should work, as long as the monitor takes a digital signal..
..then again, I also was 100% sure that all laptops with hdmi 1.3 would have bitstreaming and hdcp. While all laptop mainboards with sata 3 support should support sata 3 drives. And that was completely wrong. -
Thanks for the information Nipsen, the thing is really what i want is a upgrade from my current laptop of a Latitude D630 (5 years old) so that i can handle the newer games (doesn't have to be on ultra/high graphics). I love the Asus, but i have no idea how long i should expect it to last if i am using the high-powered processor is has (i realize it's very hard to pinpoint any kind of specific time but just something in general). I was also looking into the Lenovo Y580 as Lenovo has amazing ratings as far as durability and reliability as well as warranty and costumer service. I'm not sure if there is any kind of PM on this forum, but if you could help me out in PM i would be in your debt; if not then any help you can give me on this thread or my other would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks -
If you are looking for still portable but powerfull notebook with Ivy + Kepler GPU you are limited to N56 and Y580 at the moment. They are really similar main difference is:
more powerfull GPU at Y580 (means more power but also more heat and more power draw, still not melting or throttling)
glossy LCD panel at Y580 (huge con for some users, depends on usage and personal experience)
more aluminium on N56 (dunno if good or bad)
better keyboard at Y580 (personal opinion)
external subwoofer at N56 (usable at home only imo)
64GB mSATA SSD option at Y580 (you can swap HDD for SSD in N56 as well)
Both have backlight keyboard, both are silent and quite cool (from what I know now), both are fullHD and similar build quality
Personally I will go for Y580 because it packs more power and it is more futureproof, I like keyboard more and dont mind glossy LCD, because I am using external monitor at work and dont mind glossy at home in the evening.
sorry for long post, hope this helps -
But yeah, agree with that. Does the Lenovo have a tv-out option as well? If you are using it with different projectors, need it to always work in every situation, and so on, it's a good pick. It says: Business.
You can also use it to hammer a nail through a two by four
No, seriously, though. Y580 is a bit lighter than the n56. 2.6kg against 2.7kg. Can add the Gigabyte p-series thing to that list as well.. GIGABYTE - Notebook / Slate & Device - Notebook & Netbook - P series - P2542G Also 2.6kg.
On the other hand, the asus is a bit narrower, and isn't a full body block on the height. HP, Lenovo.. the Gigabyte as well. The well is designed so the laptop is equally thick across the body, save for the .. finger-crusher edge on the Envy, etc. Asus "solved" that by using a plastic well molded a bit more cleverly against the shape of the components inside. So it's a bit less thick, and it has room for a pencil and a notepad underneath without tipping over, so to speak.
All very good laptops in that... "semi-powerful slightly above average 3d performance - but still won't burn your thighs off"-segment, though.
...Anyone know if it's easier to get hold of high powered lithium polymer batteries for the lenovo or the gigabyte, by the way? (I'd be willing to pay dearly for a battery I can charge, leave in the backpack for a week, and then use from 98% effect. Or a battery that doesn't fall to half the effect after 7 months..). -
-
I'm pretty confident that the answer is no, but anyone able to confirm that the N56VZ doesn't have a msata slot?
Would be avesome to pop a crucial 128Gb msata disk in there if it was possible -
Issues so far:
* Clicking in the bottom corners of the touchpad is impossible / needs a lot of force.
* Clicking elsewhere is too hard
* Subwoofer makes farting sounds while scrolling/doing stuff.
* USB connection for mouse is awkwardly placed
* USB connections are too tight, all of them. (It scratches the metal on all sides of the USB plugs)
I had some other issues, but they were easily fixed. -
Hey everyone, Iv'e had this laptop for a couple of weeks and it has been amazing. The only problem I've had, and currently have, is that i can no longer disable the touchpad using the hotkey. All of my other hotkeys work fine except the touchpad one. If anyone knows how i could fix this or what i might have done to cause it i would really appreciate it.

i bought the asus on 14th of june 2012. from the moment i unboxed i had troubles. Firstly the screen is extremely grainy and for what is being heralded as a multimedia laptop by asus, this is definitely a poor execution.
The sound driver is faulty so more often than not you here this awkard robotic sounds which are very annoying and distracting, thus ruining the audio experience. The clickpad is average at best. don't even get me started on bloat ware. This laptop most definitely will not have a very good resale value and from the look of it would require a bit of repairs down the road. So i am just gonna hand it in for a refund tomorrow. The main reason i was considering a mac was because of the build quality and resale value. I'm very sure that two years from now with a mac i will be able to recoup atleast 70% of my initial investment. Sometimes the spec sheet isn't the be all and end all. Always take alot of things into consideration.
Just my 2 cents.
Have a nice day all
