Atheros AR9285/Intel 5300 Comparison
I mean...I think that the Atheros is fine, especially if you have a tight budget...you could get better cooling compound for half the price of the intel 5300 upgrade. -
Well I just snagged one. Still at the mall, can't believe I bought it on a whim.
-
Good dear...Pay your bill and rush to home for initial images and videoswe are waiting here
-
damn it you beat me! mine shipped out earlier today from somewhere in CA.
show us the pics and lets hear your thoughts about the machine! -
Still having Korean bbq
all you can eat.
-
^dude!
go do all of us around here a favour. Send us unboxing/first impressions/ benchies asap!
You have no idea how much people have been waiting here. -
Lol well I am typing on it now, I do not actually have a digital camera..so sorry for no unboxing stuff. I dont have any games on it yet, so really have nothing to bench it against other than the typical quick downloadable stuff.
First impression is that it is very very nice. Feels pretty solid. I like the keyboard. Normally hate laptop keyboards and this one feels pretty naturally set up. Touch pad is kinda cool, not used to the multi-touch, but I can totally see the potential in it.
No backlights cept for the power button.
Wifi had no problems so far. Good signal strength. Simple set up.
Media keys are simple mute vol up/dwn play/pause and what seems to be a performance toggle between entertainment mode/quiet office (dims screen among other things I don't know yet)/battery saving mode (further dimming screen)/ high performance.
Right now I am burning my painfully slow recovery disks. The plastic around the keypad is pretty well all matte finish so should be good for prints. Screen and back cover is another issue for prints though. Super high gloss screen and lid...mind you it looks so nice, I dont mind the prints that WILL develope.
Sound seems like pretty typical laptop sound. Have not put it through much tests yet other than a quick game of an included demo of some chicken "galaxian" type game. I will try to get some pics I shot by my cell phone, but it doesn't take the best photos.
Not sure what else I can tell you. Burning these disks is taking quite a while :/ -

Also try measuring 5730's temperature using different utilities. -
-
Sorry for the bad quality pics not sure what else to show you guys
As for temps, not sure of a good program to get for that, and not sure how to post a screenshot of em -
hardware montior is a good program for montioring your temps. gpu-z will show you the specs of the 5730. and cpu-z will show you the specs of the cpu
-
it looks like a very nice laptop. look like it well built. is it quiet? the reason i am asking is because i am thinking of buying this laptop so i need all the info i can get
how does the screen look? does it bleed at all?
-
they aren't bad pics at all! looks great! and you are finaly back from the mall, eh!
anyway, congratulations once again, and go ahead and make yourself a new therad for this machine in the owner's lounge section! -
hows the baterry life?
-
suddenly kud0s has become the most sought after guy here on NBR!
-
wishmaster.dj, thx for quoting kud0s's post with all those pictures, theres nothing we all love more then scrolling twice trough something we saw already
kud0s, pls, when you find time, try to get some newer game and check if laptop throttles, that's the thing most of the people are most interested in... -
Ahhh hehe popularity...DOH!
I have not tested the battery yet, but I don't imagine it to be much longer than 2hr. I wanted to give it a full nights charge just in case.
It is quiet, actually. Burning the recovery DVD's got a bit noisy, but that's understandable.
Wireless (which seems to be some sorta concern) was actually really good, I downloaded firefox over Wifi @ over 1000KB/S. I was surprised to see that sorta speeds. I streamed Boyz in the Hood HD (.mkv) over Wifi from my PC to my Laptop without any stutter - something not even my PS3 will do. Also streamed Russel Peters to it without a hiccup.
Does have a bit of expected bloatware, that i will be going through over the next few days.
Speakers are actually fairly quiet, wonder if there is a bios setting I can adjust to raise it up a bit. Doesn't need to be much louder, but a tad higher would be nice. I plugged in my Sennheiser PC350 headset and it actually sounded very very good for MP3 and a cheesy facebook poker game.
I am quite happy with it so far. Can not really think of a complaint as of yet other than the Recovery DVD's taking a very long time to burn. It was 4 DVD's
I don't think I will start the owners thread, just happy to contribute where I can. -

I am also interested in finding out whether this laptop has throttling issues. This is the only thing keeping me from ordering mine already. Just want to make sure since i have had some horrible experiences with throttling laptops.
-
any proper laid out methods /guide / tutorials to check throttling?
Any info here would be appreciated.
Thanks! -
The temperatures of the 4 cores are close to max value
Is it a fault of the body/vent or i7 itself ??? -
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=446193
scroll a bit down till you reach "Verify you have a problem" part.
its a hassle, but if it means anything to you, we would all appreciate it a lot
you can reach maximum load of cpu and gpu by simultaneously running wprime and 3dmark
you an get them here:

Since there are only two antennas the value of upgrading to the 5300 card diminishes to the superior secure connectivity which can also be achieved with the Intel 5100 WiFi card, which is cheaper, so that is what we are offering now as an option over the standard card. -
does 5100 have any perceivable advantages over the stock atheros?
-
Does anyone know if the i7 on this nb has the intel wireless display?
-
Nevermind....max is close to 100c. I think the readings min - represents his min level achieved. and max - represents his max level achieved.
-
does it have dual hard disk slots??

My sincere thanks to all of this boards members for helping me make a decision to cancel my Dell order and order this machine. Asus has one of the best reliability scores in the industry (almost 3 times that of Apple, what I read here http://www.pcworld.com/article/162091/asus_takes_top_spot_in_reliability_report.html) I am very impressed with their warranty and their damage policy too. They must have a good product or they wouldn't back it up so well.
-
-
I think the min / max is deceiving how it is stated. The max for the processor is close to 100c. The min / max listed is what he has gotten up 2.
-
-
yea, if you check temps from first post you can see minimum is around 50 and maximum is around 70, but 50°C as a minimum is still a lot imo... thing is we don't have info what was laptop used for before cpu temps were checked (except that it was obviously running 3dmark on screens in first post).
anyhow, i'm definitely getting a cooler for this laptop, i think notepal u2 should be able to keep it some 10 degrees cooler... -
-
if i have the IC thermal compound applied when i order what is an estimate as to how long it will be effective? i imagine there are factors such as how much the machine is stressed enough to produce higher amounts of heat, but i am just looking for personal experiences or ballparks.
-
Donald@Paladin44 Retired
IC Diamond is different from Arctic Silver 5 in that it takes effect almost immediately. There is no 200 hours "burn in" like with Arctic Silver 5.
-
thats good to know, but i was curious as to how long the compound would be effective
-
Donald@Paladin44 Retired
For years and years...didn't you know...diamonds are forever
-
wonder how bad the light bleed on the lcd screen is on this thing? hopefully not as bad as other asus models.....
-
So getting it with the IC Diamond Thermal Compound is totally worth it? Will it make a drastic difference in temperatures?
-
Donald@Paladin44 Retired
I haven't seen any light bleed yet. Of course it would be unusual with an LED screen.
Yes, IC Diamond will keep it running several degrees cooler than the standard paste. I wouldn't call it a drastic difference, but I would call it a significant difference. -
good choice of words there, paladin44!
-
Kudos could you post a picture with firefox open on the main forum page without maximizing please? Want to gauge how much desktop space there is at that resolution.
