Has an ETA for the release of the N61JA models ever been announced?

flip a coin, they provide GREAT services. don't forget about powernotebooks also!
I'll share my experience with Ken @ GentechPC.
    I once ordered G51J-A1 from Ken @ GentechPC and pre-ordered G73JH-A1 on January 2nd, 2010.
He supported me in anyways he possibly could and answered every questions I had. Answers were very quick and his shipment was very fast when I ordered G51j.
    just my 2c.

The third antenna wire cannot be added to this model, so there is no benefit going with the 5300 card.

There are mixed opinions on the Atheros vs. Intel card as is evidenced by the thread to which you have linked. My opinion is the Intel 5100 card will give you better connectivity with most routers, and is worth the $25.

thanks for the info. i am just concerned about the card because all i have to do is google "intel 5100" and about every page that shows up is a forum where people are complaining about it dropping out constantly or having problems connecting at all. i know people are more likely to get on line to complain about problems than say they are content, but complaints seem more prevalent with this card than others, and rarely do i see people countering that they have had no problems. to your knowledge have the problems that have been associated with this card over the past couple years been satisfactorily addressed?

There could be a lot of variables with those posts, mostly importantly what computer they are using.

I have polled all of our 24/7 technicians and they report they have had no connectivity issues reported that were not related to the router. The 5100 WiFi card itself has had no reported issues in any of our laptops (i.e. Sager, PowerPro or ASUS).

I was just checking out the stats on the Mobility Radeon HD 5730. It looks like it can drive up to 6 displays. I wonder if it can drive my two external monitors and the laptop display at the same time. I'd have to get a wider workstation :)

You need a Displayport to use the Eyefinity feature of the ATi 5xxx cards, and so far there are virtually no laptops that have one.

Your laptop will support one external monitor itself, and if you need more there are several video adapters, like the ViBook Plus, ViDock2, or Matrox that will allow you to use more.

Thanks for the info on the displayport, I figured I was prob. reaching.

Are you sure it can't support two external monitors? My old ASUS G1S with a Nvidia 8600GT was able to support two. One through the HDMI port and one through the VGA port.

So you want two external monitors, but not use your laptop screen?

    Why not use all three?

Both my external monitors have a higher resolution than the laptop monitor. When I'm at home I tend to use my laptop like a desktop. If I could use all three then bonus! In reality I doubt I'd use all three, but hey don't we all like additional features :D .

    I use all three :)

All it takes is a good quality USB to DVI/VGA adapter like the ViBook Plus.

I think Atheros will be just as good as Intel, it support both 2.4Ghz and 5.0Ghz. unless the laptop came with Intell wireless 1000 card which only supports 2.4Ghz.

We have been shipping the ASUS N61JQ-A1 since January 27th.

Yes, the ATi HD 5730 should be able to play all of those games well :)

The N61JQ is out, in stock and ready to ship. :) The 5730 scores approximately 8000 on 3D Mark 06 with the stock i7 720QM. It maybe a little choppy on some of the games at high settings but will play just about anything you throw at it.

    Any comments about the heat?
A similar system from HP (slightly better actually, Envy 15) can score 10k on 3DMark06 with OC'd setting and still have the max temperature at 67.5C on 20C ambient temperature.

From our experience you will not need a cooler for this model, particularly if you select the IC Diamond to CPU + GPU thermal compound.

Alright i just read a thread where people were having temp issues, i just want to be on the safe side while gaming, i will be getting the IC diamond compound, but if i did want to buy a cooler, what would you recommend is the best based on the venting on the laptop?

The i5 version was recently suspended from coming to the US. (N61JA-A1). The JQ is ready to go. :) A Zalman cooler is usually the best to go with, it has a broad range of vents it will cover.

Only one user has reported a overheating issue, but that was along with crashing and buzzing noises. I'm guessing a hardware issue.

Also, have we gotten a confirmation on battery life in power saver mode? I am very interested in this model.

Exactly, we all are curious to know the REASON stated by Asus to USA retailers like XoticPC/NBR/GenTechPC. Is it a buggy model and Asus found bug before shipping and hence stopped it or anything else

I've been waiting for this laptop to appear in Sweden for a month now but even though prisjakt.nu has an empty page for it, the wait is driving me crazy. Does anybody know when it will pop up in Sweden? Otherwise I've to go for Sony Vaio VPC- F11S1E even though it does not have a DirectX 11 capable card.

Yes, what is the reason behind the i5 model config not being released in the USA?

What's with all these laptops being released with problems or imperfections....

Just so you know, not only is the GPU in the Vaio F not DirectX 11 capable, is is MUCH weaker in every other regard than the one in the N61.

Normally its the need to make back on initial R&D. Second generations are normally the intended devices to be released but the first gen is put out there for the enthusiasts to purchase and take the deficiencies.

Just look at the IPad. Do you think what has been released is seriously what Jobs wants to associate himself with right now?

But it this case it really isn't a second generation release. It is simply using a different processor and a blue ray drive. The chipsets are identical. If you wanted you could buy the N61JQ and simply upgrade the DVD drive to the blue-ray drive and buy the i5-5xx chip separately and it would essentially be the N61JA.

I'm betting (guessing) Intel is having a supply problem on the i5-5xx chips and ASUS is simply delaying the launch.

I don't know, but I've heard that one reason that Apple hasn't released an i3 or i5 version of the macbook is because of supply. So far the only machines I've seen using the i5 chip are using the 400 series chip and not the 500 series. I've seen no i7 duel cores out at all at the moment.

Goto Dell site and configure Studio XPS 1647 with i5-520M/540M and you can see the Preliminary Ship Date: 2/19/2010, means the 500 series i5 processors are available and already shipping, thats same with other brand laptops also.

I think Asus N61JA-A1 (i5-430M) is overpriced as compared to N61JQ-A1 (i7-720QM) if we consider the processor price into consideration. And may be Asus is thinking over it :D

Yes I looked at dells preliminary ship dates. They've had that date for about two weeks now. So maybe we'll start seeing ASUS release a i5 model around early march. I'm just making observations and guessing, I have no hard data to backup anything.
