    Exactly, heat and wattage.
i7 is still an overkill processors for nowadays.

righto, I'm assuming the i5 would be cheaper??? so how much less heat would the i5 generate I wonder....is it really running that cooler?

Everyone has their own reasons, but I would say for the ability to switch between integrated and discrete graphics for the better battery life.

I heard that some current laptops with i5 cpu have the ability to switch "turned off" by the manufacturer, is that possibly true?

Yes...As you have both on board and dedicated graphics solutions, technically you should be able to choose one at a time. Some manufacturers provide dedicated button for switching and some may can give software based solution.
Yes...Definitely i5 is cheaper than i7 by Intel. But in practical manufacturers are NOT PASSING that benefit to end user. Even they charge more than the processor price in case of upgrade :D

I picked this up from Donald over at PowerNoteBooks.com and there was a shipper issue and I had to return the unit. PNB was the best buying experience I have had in the 14 years I have been making purchases on the net. The computer is fantastic and works wonders with my video and photo editing software. Not sure about gaming but I bought this more for work while on the road.

Is anyone else irritated by the touchpad? It's a nice touchpad, but the "two-finger scrolling" thing is utter crap.

I use a Mac at work so I'm used to it. I still haven't fully gotten used to the touchpad yet. I usually carry a portable mouse anyways.

My screen completely stopped working after 2 days.
Covered under warranty I have to send it to Asus... don't think I've ever been so disappointed.

sorry to hear that, probably just a lemon out of the bunch hope more problems like this don't arise but its still a fairly new laptop, I just placed my order for one through NCIX and now the waiting game begins

anyone that has one can they say if the keyboard has any flex to it?

EDIT: can you also disable hyperthreading in the bios?

    HI folks,

I just picked up the N61JQ-A1 last night and really enjoying it thus far. My only complaint is the LED screen. I can live with the lower Resolution because I think it's perfectly matched for the size of the panel but I find the color balance is completely off. The one Windows 7 default background with the Ice/sun burst is so blue..it's completely wack. Any other graphics people out there annoyed by the crappy white balance?

Could you do me a favour, browse to here

    http://futuremark.yougamers.com/forum/

Does the bar where it say user / control panel / search etc look grey, or does it have a distinct blue tint?

It definitely looks a bit blue. I have a pair of Dell U2209WA IPS monitors and i can tell you this asus panel is very subpar..oh well got to save cost somewhere i guess. Overall i'm still pleased with the purchase..it's lightening quick.

All my roommates are mac users and they say the keyboard and touch pad are just like a mac notebook. I like it, it types quietly.

The only complaint I have with the entire laptop apart from my screen crapping out was the long single button on the touch pad.

Just found out that this laptop is back ordered til March 10th. Is it that Asus did not expect a great response for it in the US or something had to be upgraded or changed in the current model?

Welcome to ASUS land. Supply never seems to be able to meet demand, particularly on the more popular models.

We actually expect to resume shipping them on the 5th.

It's really not hard to click it, it just takes a little bit of extra reach. If you have larger hands it should be just fine. Where the button on my old laptop is split you could easily click on the right end of the left click button however where this is one whole button you have to be pretty clear in clicking the left side else there's a thick pushback.

    Hey guys,

I was recently looking to purcahse this laptop after many failed attempts at the Studio 1747.

I was just wondering how many watts does this PSU have?, as well as if there are any issues with throttling the CPU and GPU?, as is the case with the Studio 17.

    Thanks guys!

Hi, I have the Asus N61JQ, and I'd like to know how many DVD+Rs you need to complete system recovery discs (the AI Recovery that shows up when window starts). I know that it will probably only use single layer DVDs.

my 2,5 year old asus v1s with ddr2 gets 5,5!
i'm sorry for me terrible english...

So with a 90watt power supply the system cannot run to it's full potential. That makes it easy to cut this laptop from my list.

Thanks that is more or less what I wanted to hear. I hate computer systems that have an excellent potential only to be cut down by a throttling issue (as seems common.)

You've made my list and job in picking a new laptop harder, lol.

Sent my Laptop to Asus, took 1 1/2 weeks or the airway bill to arrive, shipped it out arrived at their door the next day. 2 Weeks to repair it, shipped to me the next day.

Exact same problems within 24 Hours. They did not erase my hard drive; they told me it was a motherboard issue and that it was replaced.

Waiting on a new airway bill.
