That's a decent sized step down in the GPU...

Think I'll wait to see specs on the N82 or see if the N61JA comes out in March.

I too would like to know as well. My Asus G51VX was stolen and I've only just replaced it with an Asus G60j, however the screen resolution for the 16" is really, really poor, especially one with a Blu-Ray drive. It is nothing compared to the 1080p screen which was stolen from me :( .

The N61Ja-A1 came equipped with a Blu-Ray player in the default configuration. You could get rid of that option though and drop about a hundred dollars off the price.

It says discontinued now though, so you can't order it anyway at the moment.

Does anyone actually have information as to why asus discontinued the ja?Because it's still available in Australia and I was interested in purchasing it, however if there is a problem with it I don't really want to waste my money.

As I'm sure you know, us Australians get shafted in any way possible. In the case of the N61Ja that we get, it has 2 cores vs the 4 in the Jq everywhere else. Without switchable graphics to balance that out, the Jq is better value for money.

Luckily, we still get the 5730. However, it's around 1800AUD, compared to the 1065USD of the N61Jq. 1065USD is around 1200AUD at this current exchange rate. Add in customs and GST of 15% and $150 shipping and you see that we not only get shafted in terms of specs, but also price.

    Go to hell Asus Australia.

Cheers for the info Borkey, I was praying there was switchable graphics, in fact it was the main reason I was considering it over the JQ. Hmm this has made things a bit more complicated, might look into ordering the JQ from the states because I'm not really looking to spend $1800-1900 on a laptop.

Actually, I probably started badmouthing too quickly. We only got shafted in terms of specs. $1800 was what I saw at the local Smith, and I forgot to check MSY before I ran my mouth.

If there's an MSY near you, they're selling it for $1399, which is "reasonable". Still no switchable graphics, but hey, nothing else has it yet anyway.

EDIT: And what do you know? The N61JQ is selling here too! For around $1700. I take back any apologies made above.

It's not coming out in America. Only to backwater countries like Australia.

Lol, are you looking for a fight?

Don't call anyone's country backwater, its disrespectful. ;)

And from what I understand its Asus fault for not having proper distribution foresight.

    Fight it is then!

OI, A ROUND OF VB!! I'll drink you under the table.

In all seriousness though, you can't deny that our technology sucks. To be fair, at least they also released the JQ model, though at a much greater price. And even then only if you feel like hiking all the way to MSY.

Thank you for alive the almost dead thread :D

After Asus discontinued N61JA-A1 in USA we did not have any info/update for this model. I doubt if anybody has already owned it :p

But again, in recent March catalog its again appeared. Lets hope for the best this time.

Personally, I prefer Asus N61JA in white color compared to dark brown which I believe that it is finger prints magnet. :D However, you said that the white Asus N61JA continues to appear in the market again and can you give me the link to the March catalog that you mentioned above. I would like to have a look at it. Thanks in advance!

I did not say, white (or dark brown) continues to appear :( I said it has been discontinued in USA and doubt anybody already owned a N61JA-A1 model.

Having said that just cross your fingers and relax, Asus is coming again with N61JA and many other new models. Here is the link for the newer Asus models.

As someone here @ NBR said ... Asus no more produce laptops rather produce magazines for future laptops :p (he was kidding as it takes time to launch these products mentioned in that magazine)

    Hi,

Any news on the N61Ja?? It seems its still not available on any US website. But it seems to be available in Europe
    N61JA Reviews - alaTest USA

I have been keen on buying the N61Jv - but it has a lower end gpu as compared to the N61Ja. Further, I don't mind optimus not being there. If I understand correctly, it saves only on battery power. For me, this laptop will be a desktop replacement and almost always connected to power.

So N61Ja was a better fit as it had a stronger graphics card. The Asus magazine that listed it was out in March/April. It takes so long for it to arrive in USA?

Just ordered my N61JA-JX087X for $1299aus downunder. It was hard to find and as far as i can tell is discontinued. But if you can find it its a steal for i5,1Gb 5730, bluray, and 2year warranty.

Will let everyone know what I think of it, i have high hopes.

From what I've heard it seems that it doesn't have switchable graphics. However it has core i5 with integrated graphics chip, so maybe it will be possible later with newer radeon drivers. Awaiting for your review!

    Hey Guys,

So I've had the N61JA for a few days now. Overall impression is great!

Got it dual-booting with Ubuntu 10.4 without any troubles. Man does Ubuntu look good these days! So much better and faster and safer for web browsing...

The only negatives for the laptop are the glossy screen and no switchable graphics. Although i have read that the N61J? with the gt325m optimus is having teething problems(check newegg reviews).

Once you get use to the glossy screen, it does look really good. I don't mind the max resolution either. Performance is excellent!

So if you find this on special go buy it!

Battery Life is around 2hours watched 30min HD video, and 1:30hr listening to music and web browsing.

Gaming is brilliant. We can achieve quite nice overclocks with the 5730 as our i5 processors run quite alot cooler than the i7s.

I tried to overclock the CPU with setFSB but I screwed up my non-turbo clocks.

If anyone does this install Power4Gear Hybrid and set minimum processor state to 100% or whatever you want. I believe messing around with setfsb turned it down to 5%.

AFAIK, Core i3/i5/i7 is hard/impossible to overclock correctly because it'll mess up with its auto-throttling (FSB multiplier going up and down as you run more/less demanding application).

My wireless stopped working after a drop of about 5cm. If I take off the cover to check the connections will it void my warranty?

I took off the cover but nothing seemed to be out of place. Should I just send it for RMA?
